Connection Speed 17Mbps - File Downloading At 200KB/sec?
Jun 22, 2011
I recently got cable internet that goes up to 20Mbps in download speed. I even went to an internet testing site to test the speed and got back a result of 17Mbps.Anyway, when I download a file, it's only downloading at 200KB/sec, and that's right after I tested the connection speed of 17Mbps. When I had DSL at 5Mbps, it went about 600KB/sec (which makes sense), now that I have this cable internet that's faster, the download speed is slower

I'm having an issue with my laptop. Although, from my provider, it should be possible to establish a connection at 25'000 kbit/s (download), max speed is at about 800 kbit/s. I'm only about 20 feet away from where the router is located and I don't use any phones (except for a cell phone). I read on this board, that I might have to change the wireless settings on the router and change the radio band but didn't manage to do so. I'm using Mac osx and a wireless connection.

I have been having a few problems with my IBM T42 Laptop for a while now. I was originally running Windows XP on this system and about 12 months ago I installed Ubuntu 9 on it to mess around a bit with the OS and have a basic, non-Microsoft laptop in the house that I could use for browing the web and IM, etc... The laptop needed a clean install anway as Windows XP was running like a dog. Originally it was dual boot but once I got happy with Ubuntu I did a clean install and everything worked reasonably well. I had a few issues with the wireless LAN adapter and compatibilty, but sorted it out following a few forums (firware updates, driver updates) and everything was great. I upgraded to the Ubuntu 10.04 OS and then started having some issues. Essentially my browser would freeze randomly. Again, I visted the forums and had no joy in sorting out the problem. I reverted the OS back to Ubuntu 9 and the problem persisted. So I gave up on it totally around 6 months ago.
Last week I fired up the laptop again and decided I would use the IBM restore utility and the disks I created a couple of years ago to put on a clean install of Windows XP and see how things went. So far I have done all the Windows XP updates (SP3, etc...), I have been to the Lenovo website and updated all drivers, firmware, BIOS, etc... every little problem I have had has been sorted with a software or firmware update which I have successfully implemented. All niggles have been sorted bar one.The only problem I have left now is very odd. Everything works fine and at reasonable speed considering the age and specs of my system. When I connect via cable to my router/modem all network and internet services work fine. I have had no issues. But when I connect via wireless, intermittently my system will completely freeze - no errors, no logs - nothing. No sounds, just frozen screen. Hard reboot is the only thing that I can do to get back online.Further investigating the issue - the freezing occurs when I click on a link to download something. I can browse anything - I have tried videos (youtube) and have no problems at all - but if I click to download a file (software upgrade pack, pdf document, Qucktime player) the system freezes up and ONLY when connected wirelessly via the inbuilt Cisco Wireless LAN adapter. Before 2 - 3 days I bought a PC with wireless lan (RP-WP5122E WL-N PCI-E ADAPTER). I have and laptop, too. My router is Linksys WRT160NL. The laptop have a wireless card with G standart. On speed test makes 14 - 17 Mbps download, which is normal. When I try to download something on my PC maximum speed is 400 - 600 kbps, on speed test is 2 - 4 Mbps. When I connect my PC with cable to my router speed was 10MB/s (80 - 85 Mbps). I try to change channels on wireless network, but there is no change. I downloaded the latest drivers for this WLAN, but the speed is the same. I change the slot on the mainboard and to flash the firmware on my router, but there is no change.

i have a little annoying problem with my E4200. V1 with the latest 04 fw. It seems, that after many hours of downloading at full speed (only one torrent at a time) the speed goes down, and up again, and becoming unstable. My max download speed is 1.5 Mb/s, and it can drop from that, to 50 kb/s, and then up again. and i have no internet access when that happens, but it only last 10-20 seconds and then its back again. Sometimes i get that yellow warning sign on the taskbar which says "No Internet Access" but not always.
Seems like its happening after many hours of downloading at full speed. im on the latest firmware, have tried different channels, 20 Mhz only on Channel Width, different names on the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channels.. i use the 2.4Ghz channel btw. Otherwise its stable, and i have had no problems while gaming online.

I have a Netgear 600 dual band router connected to a DOCIS 3.0 cable modem with a 25mps internet connection from my ISP, should be fast right? When I run a speed test on my comp I get 10-13 mbps download on average. Here's the issue, upon visiting my mothers house and running the same speed test I got very similar results. She is running a Lynksys G router on a DOCIS 2.0 cable modem with 12mps connection. My question is, how can this be so, am I at the limits of my comps g network card? as a disclaimer I would like to note I am connected to the G band on both routers.

I spoke with two different support agents with a well respected routermanufacturer. I got two different answers - No surprise. So, I ask the forum, what file transfer speeds should I expect when transfering a good sized amount of data (10gig) from wired PC on a 10/100/1000 network router to another PC via wireless connection 20 (feet away + two walls) using 802.11N.Both PC's are new / newer with win 7 64 bit. - Current transfer speeds - Both wired and wireless internet download speed tests are arond 21 meg per second. Both PC's wired and wireless get around 3.7 meg per second internet download (speed tests). At this point - no real difference in internet access between PC's and wired / wireless.
However, when I copy a file from PC1 to PC 2 (both wired) I get 68 megs per second. When I transfer the same data set (10 gig) from PC1 wired to PC 2 wireless, the data transfer falls to 3.7 meg per second. One rep told me to expect about 80% of my wired rate or about 54 megs per second (when using my 802.11N 300meg) equipment. The other rep (same company) told me that the 3.7 meg per second ia about the best I can expect. A transfer rate of 3.7 megs per second simply does not appear to be a reasonable speed given that all my wireless equipment is pretty new and supports numbers that are much higher

url...I have 2 PC's connected to a DIR-615 through 802.11n and each have a DWA-130 802.11n adapter. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on both computers. The specs of both systems are very high.I only have these 2 computers on wireless right now. Their signal is full strength, they are less than 10 feet away from the router.I am getting 2.0 MB/s when transferring files between them and although I am not expecting to get 17MB/s, but I should be getting better speed than 2 MB/s.Hard drive specs are Crucial C300 SATA 6.0, WD Caviar Blue SATA 3.0, and WD Caviar Green SATA 3.0. My Green drive reads/writes at 100MB/s, My Blue 125MB/s, and My SSD 225MB/s. So, those are not the bottleneck. Is there any other settings I can try? I have not messed with my DWA-130 settings nor have I messed with Windows.

-Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet
I'm using a CAT5e cable. But it gives only a 10 MB/s file sharing speed. What is the reason for this? (In both the computers under "Local Area Connection Status" it shows 100 Mbps for the speed)

I am using my ADSL Internet Connection especially for downloading files those past few months.I have even purchased an account at filesonic. However, the speed remain the same except that there are no waiting period and I can download multiple files at the same time. What are the tips for increasing downloading time? I am now using the latest 5.0 Firefox and Windows 7 and using or not using the download them all add-ons does not add much to the download time.
What about the telephone line cable? The position of the beetel modem, does that play a role in speed limit? Are there some hardware equipment that can cause a subsequent increase in download speed?

I have a 2wire modem/router to connect to the internet. However, the ethernet controller on my Dell 8400 has a ? by it in the device manager. I'm told by the Internet provider that I need to download a driver to allow the connection. Which driver do I download? My network interface is listed as a Integrated Gigabit Ethernet (Product code IN - SKU - 430-0742). I've gone to the driver download page on Dell's website and entered my service tag, but I still don't really know which driver is needed OR if it's even listed. Broadcom-Driver
R87461.EXE (8MB) - shows optional, so I'm not sure if this is correct or not. By the way, the operating system is Windows(r) XP Professional.

My XBOX started complaining when I began using Windows Media Center to stream videos from my PC to my XBOX. I found out that I had a wireless G router provided by verizon which wasn't fast enough to stream videos. SO, I went out and purchased a 4500EA router expecting it to be the fastest thing I had ever seen.
Now it seems a bit slow when trying to stream video from my laptop to the XBOX and i'm a tad bit confused as to why. So I did a file transfer from a desktop wired directly to the router from a laptop in the same room wirelessly connected to the network and my speed is about 4mbps. 4MBPS!? This device is supposed to be capable of moving packets LAN side at 450MBPS.
Both of my PC's are quad core, newer model PCs. I've tried moving files now for several hours with the same results. I've toyed around with my wireless adapters, changed power settings, full duplex, half, changed mtu sizes, changed security settings. I'm out of ideas.
Is getting about 1% of the advertised bandwidth normal?

I have a wire ADSL connection and I use ADSL WiFi enabled router for distribute my internet connection with in my other devices (on my home network). When I downloading large files (more than 30MB) over the internet using my WiFi connection, my connection drop several times. However if I exchange large files within my WiFi network (with in home network via WiFi), my WiFi connection not drop (I can exchange 6GB files without any issue). Why is that? Is it my router issue or my ADSL connection issue? Most of the time after I lost internet connection, i can see my WiFi connectivity standby, it's not disconnect. However some time it completely disconnect. After I lost the connection (standby or completely disconnected) it again automatically connect.
I face this issue if i download large files on the internet, via the WiFi, if i download large files on internet using Ethernet cable, my connection not drop, it's stable. I use default wireless settings on my router? I use open WiFi connection.

I set up the e1500 and everything worked well, my download speed over the wifi was something like 50mps, now its down to .3 mps over the wifi. When I'm hardwired to the router the speed goes back up and everything is fine. The only problem is the wifi. Its not the ISP because my roommates aren't having a problem with their wifi at all. I haven't changed anything on my computer except updated some drivers since I set up the router. My network card drivers are up to date and so is the router's drivers. I'm also doing all this about 5 feet away from the router.
I have a Dell XPS L502x running win 7 64 bit.
