Creating A Home Hot Spot?
Nov 2, 2011
I am a bit confused on how to create a Hot Spot & connect a Dell Desktop(no built in WIFI) a Dell Laptop(with built in WIFI) & a HP Printer with WIFI. From reading info on your Web Site, it appears that I need a Wireless Router, an adapter(not sure what this is) for my Desktop. I have AT&T Air Card internet access. Do I need anything else?

I'm experimenting/attempting to use a laptop as a network tap between my (DSL) modem and a wrt54gs by creating a bridge with two NICs in the laptop. My problem is I can't seem to get connectivity on the user end of the router. I can't ping the bridge from an end computer...
DHCP is disabled in the router, but even when manually configuring the IP address on an end computer and using the bridge as a default gateway I can't ping out.
Am I completely misunderstanding the purpose of a NIC bridge?

Moving into a new spot and some of the computer will be forced to go wireless. Is it better to have an adapter or an actual built-in PCi card?We play a lot of games, so that is my main concern, will we notice a big difference? The router that I am using is a WND3700 with latest firmware update.

My parents live in a retirement community that has free wifi. They are in a blind spot and need a rooftop antenna, which has been connected to a laptop. They want a wireless network in their house. Can I just plug the rooftop antenna into one antenna socket of a two antenna AP/Bridge/Repeater? If not, what should I do?

I live near several public hit spots. A geek told me I could configure my PC (XP) or laptop (Win 7) to act as a wifi receiver and connect that to my wireless router to distribute the Internet connection to my Blue-ray and other laptops. I can't figure out the correct steps to make it work.

I was connected to a wifi-spot for two weeks and it worked all fine. Since a few days ago the owner of the spot changed the password and since then I can't connect to my internet anymore. I'm 100% sure that I have the right password but still when I try to connect it shows a yellow triangle with a black "!" on top of it, saying "Limited or no internet connectivity"[CODE]

In one area of the home is a century link pk 5000 modem that connect to the internet. In another area of the home is the computer that has an e1200. Is it possible to connect the computer to the internet, wirelessly, from the e1200 to the pk5000? How is this accomplished?
I know the settings for the pk5000 and would "input" them into the e1200 if I friggen knew where to do this.

I just recently bought this router (DIR-615 rev E3) to act as a Access Point for the dead wifi spot in my room downstairs. I set up everything properly (Turned off DCHP, set ports and gateway..subnet blah blah) and it was working fine. My wireless speeds were perfect, and had no issues with that. However, my wired speed was significantly slowed down. I have Verizon Fios and have the wire from that plugged in to LAN port 1 on my DIR-615. I have another wire going from Port 2 to the back of my PC. My normal speeds are about 30mbps down and 25mbps up. When I connect my internet through the second router (DIR-615) I get a maximum of about 3.0mbps up and down, doesn't go much higher than that. The wireless however, gives me about 11mbps both ways, which is fine.
I thought it might have been a firmware issue so I flashed to DD-WRT (build 15778), but the problem persists. I've tried most everything and am getting desperate. There's absolutely no logical reasoning for the slowdown. I have confirmed it's a router issue because I also turned off wireless on my laptop and plugged that directly into the router instead of my desktop and get the same 3mbps.

I have a VM (Alice).I want to route ALL its traffic through a server of my own in the UK.It needs to be 'fail-safe' in the sense that the traffic must either be routed through the server, or not at all (EG with windows VPN dialer, if the VPN connection is dropped it will immediately begin routing traffic normally again - that's not acceptable*). I need to run windows on the VM, the server can be anything. The VM is connected to the internet via a linux firewall/router box in my house (set as default gateway for the VM).How can I set this up?

I have been assigned to create a basic IP Addressing Scheme. The company has a single class B private address range of 172.16.11.0/16 and it needs to be divided into four subnets. They are all based on a single router.
Subnet A: 500 hosts
Subnet B: 200 hosts
Subnet C: 50 hosts
Subnet D: 20 hosts
How can I subnet them correctly and how would I make an addressing scheme for each subnet? (Host range, server, peripherals, gateway address? etc.)

I am looking at using a TP-Link Powerline Adapter (TL-PA211 Starter Kit) and a Trendnet 4-Port Broadband Router Tw100-S4@1CA (both listed on Amazon) to connect my Hitachi L32A402 HDMI television and a Roku XD|S to the internet to use Netflix. And also to connect my housemate's new laptop.
I believe the setup would be from my Dell Vostro desktop to the Trendnet router to one of the TP-Link Powerline Adapters. This would be on the second floor. Then in the basement I would need to plug in two additional adapters ... I would connect one to the Roku and then to the Hitachi tv and connect the other one to my housemate's computer.
My questions are:
Can I keep the computers not visible to each other? We would both like to maintain our privacy ... and I don't know if we connect everything up this way if our computers will be open to each other. Is this called putting them on a separate network?
I saw something in the documentation in this manual [URL]. I think on page 20 it is telling me I can give one adapter a different name to put it on another network, but I am not sure. And I also see that it also says for there to be connectivity they need to have all the same name "HomePlugAV".
So, if the tv and the main adapter have "HomePlugAV" as a name, and my housemate's adapter has a different name ... then they will all work (get on the internet) - but my housemate and I will have privacy?
Are there any issues about anyone being able to access my computer through the tv ...

Creating an image is almost always a success. However, when restoring, sometimes the process gets stuck somewhere (the client reboots prematurely if that happens) and more than often the clients can't boot into Windows anymore. All clients have the exact same hardware. Now I know the image can't be the problem, as I've restored this exact image to a client two days ago and it booted perfectly fine. Everything worked.I tried to image two clients at the same time. The first thing I noticed was that the method used was NFS and not UDPCAST, which it should be. Now I know it wasn't using multicast because the imaging went asynchronous.

I'm starting college in the fall and will be living in the dorms on campus. I want to have a "private network" setup within the university's network in my dorm room so my and my roommate's phones and iPads can still find my Apple TV, file sharing and network drives are still possible, and I can easily set up my network printer. Obviously, I don't want to lose Internet connectivity. Can I use NAT to accomplish this without losing Internet connection through the university?
how the sysops will hate me if they find me, I know this. It's not for malicious use, only for ease of use of my devices.
This may be totally off base, that's why I'm asking if this will work before I try it. I have an old WRT54G I would like to use if its capable, if not I'll buy a new one but I'm trying to avoid that. Here's what I'm thinking:
My router plugged into the University's Ethernet port in my room (for this setup do I use a LAN port or the WAN port on the router?) DHCP disabled, all devices static IP On the "Advanced Routing" tab: "Router" mode, not "gateway" mode What should my destination LAN ip be? Gateway? LAN & Wireless or WAN?
Switch connected to the router
Devices connected to the switch or connected wirelessly Should my gateway and DNS on each device be the host address assigned to my router?

I am having a problem in which when ever I check "Computer" later on in the day, one of the network drives is duplicating itself over and over using a different drive letter each time. By the end of the day if untouched I can have approx 20 of them!To give you more information about the scenario, the computer is on Windows 7 pro, it is on a domain in which the server is 2008 r2, there are 2 network drives in total (only one is duplicating), the only 2 changes I recall that may have caused it is box.net is running on the server syncing all content on the networks drives and a new printer has been added on the network.

Alrighty, a little misdirected here. been reading docs for a little while and experimenting around maybe someone can point me in the right direction, How to you create a Guest Network in IOS Zone Firewall. For some reason Cisco, while using the term DMZ, applies differently on their routers than it does on their ASA's. I know how to do this on ASA's all day long however on the router it is a little different story.
