D-Link DIR-655 :: Router Drop Connections After Upgrade
Dec 30, 2010
I recently upgraded my network because my DIR-655 started to drop connections. My new routers (a Netgear ProSafe VPN Firewall SRXN3205) is working great, but I'd like to re-purpose my D-Link as a wireless bridge.
According to Netgear support, I need to link my DIR-655 to another access point connected to the network over wired Ethernet. No problem there; I have a DAP-1522 connected via Ethernet on the floor directly below the location of the DIR-655. I was under the impression that although the signal was going through the floor, the physical distance to between the two devices would be sufficient to make the connection. No joy. I use the push-to-connect buttons on the two devices, but they do not connect. Is the floor the only issue? I do have an ANT-24 antenna extension for the DIR-655 router -- would that make any difference. As I say, the physical distance between the two devices is less than 10 feet.

I had a D-link DSL-G604T router which recently had begun to drop connections, so I decided it was time for an upgrade. I bought a D-link DIR-615 and followed the instructions on the CD, but no internet connection. After several hours of hair pulling I came accross a solution; If I connected the internet port on the DIR-615 to one of the ethernet ports on the DSL-G604T using an ethernet cable I could then connect to the internet. However this defeats the point of having a new router if I have to use the old one to connect to the internet. Is there a way to configure the DIR-615 so that is works properly?

I had a Linksys Wireless-G router for a long time and had very good luck with it. However, I ended up getting a couple of Wireless-N devices and wanted to get a different router. I bought the Linksys E3000. I got it home and set it up, and at first it worked. Then it would all of a sudden drop everything connected to it. I would restart the router, and in short order it would drop all connections again. This completely baffled me for awhile, until I actually touched the bottom of the router, and it was quite hot. I had it laying flat on a a table, so I could never understand why it was getting so hot. Anyway...I stood it up on it's side and it worked for awhile. Then it would randomly drop various things connected to it. The last straw was when I was listening to internet on the Apple TV, while viewing the internet on my PC and it started dropping the connection every five minutes. Anyway, I have now hooked my Wireless-G Linksys back up and it is working great.
is Wireless-N even needed? I live in a small place, so I don't need it to reach a long distance, and I don't transfer a tremendous amount of date wirelessly, so that doesn't really matter. Should I even try to fix this router? I looked on the Linksys page and I am running the newest firmware.

I started having connectivity issues between my core 4506E (Sup7E) and Cisco 2960S. There were input and CRC errors on Te int (SFP 10Gb - LRM) on 2960S, which cause the interface to reset and drop connections. While troubleshooting this issue, I have replaced patch cords and also had the tech checking the fiber. He said that there was some residue on one of the connectors, so the light levels fluctuated in 1300nm, but worked fine in 850. Well LRMs are using 1300, so he re-polished the tips, which worked to stabilize the light levels. After all that, I was still receiving the input/CRC errors, but the connection was NOT dropping. As my last resort I swapped the SFPs between the core and 2960, thinking I should start having issues on the core end. Well, here's what happened: I stopped receiving input/CRC errors on 2960 (also no errors on the core), but 2960s started generating Rx power high alarms: [code]

I have a E3200 and upgraded the firmware last weekend to 1.0.0.4 and now I get dropped connections every few minutes. I was working form home and VPN into a west coast client and was getting dosconnected every few minutes so I thought it was possibly their VPN but when I checked my outloook it was also disconnected and is not associated with their VPN. I called Comcast and they said the modem has been online for 19 days so now everything points to the router.

I having a basic query in troubleshooting E1 link , here im facing packet drop in the link and we are testing by providing local loop and remote loop from the CSU/DSU at local point and at remote point . I have tried ping test while the loop is given at local point and remote point ie i have pinged my local serial interface IP address (eg 10.0.0.1 -local & 10.0.0.2 -remote ) in Remote Loop i could see no errors and drops and also the traffic on the interface output and input is the same(eg input rate 1000bps and output rate 1000bps) .My query is that when i am pinging the local interface IP does the icmp packet travels till the loop point and comes to the same interface(like a boomerang) .

My requirment is to drop the Internet traffic once the Cisco HWIC 3G backup link will become active(attached) .Because I should allow only Business Critical Data allow through that and others should drop. Here are the config I used. In here I used a standard access list to generate intersting traffic which allow all the traffic traverse through the backup link. Can I drop the packets to the proxy (192.168.1.100) using this access list and allow other traffic.access-list 1 deny 192.168.1.100access-list 1 permit anydialer-list 1 protocol ip list 1.Is this the proper way I should follow ? I noticed over 100 connections from my wirelessly-connected PC to my router's IP address, destination port 4444. Is this normal, or could it be some kind of misconfiguration? At the moment, there are no connections to port 4444 in my PC's firewall connection list. Why would my PC connect to the router on port 4444?I've scanned my PC for viruses/malware and it's come up clean, so I was wondering if this could be caused by my router? Google doesn't have any answers to this either. My firmware version is 1.34.

I travel and connect this device in the hotels. On this occasion, the hotel wired connection is limited to one device with username/password entered through the web page. Is there a way to share this connection using one of the modes to multiple devices (the devices will run in a different subnet than the hotel network). I understand I can do this in WISP mode but only for sharing hotel wireless connection. The hotel wifi has poor reception, hence I want to use wired. Is there a way to do this? I would imagine this would be not an unusual scenario in many top hotels. Mid hotels generally do not have such limitations.

A few weeks ago I began having issues with my 615 arbitrarily dropping connections and so on which turned out to be an overheating router, due to sudden hot weather here in the UK, and I just wanted to share how I solved it. My solution was to dremel a hole in the case just big enough to fit a small, silent 12v brushless fan I salvaged from a wrecked computer's PSU, which would then rest on the PCB without any real fixtures. I even drilled some small holes in the side of the case for air to exit. This was fine though because the router is never moved around. Rather than solder the fan onto the power jack socket connections inside to use the unit's own supply, I used an old, disused multi-adaptor and ran the fan cables out of a small hole at the back. The benefit of that was that it didn't add any strain to the router's PSU as this was already under some load after messing around with transmit power in dd-wrt. Another small advantage is that I get voltage control on the fan for slowing on cooler days.

I have been using a TP-Link WR1043-ND for a while now. It is configured as a dumb switch with DHCP disabled. Every other day or so, the device stops taking connections and I cannot access via the IP address. A simple power toggle resets everything immediately. Through this, the LAN connected devices never lose connectivity, I simply am not able to connect wirelessly or access the router via web browser. The only device I connect to the wifi is my phone, so it may actually be more frequently and I do not notice due to my low utilization (and I have 3G so I don't always notice right away if I'm connected). I have a WDTV Live SMP connected to one of the LAN ports and that functions non-stop regardless of the wifi. When the wifi is "down", my phone can see the network and attempts to connect. Sometimes it times out, other times I am repeatedly prompted that the password is incorrect, even though I am POSITIVE that I am entering it correctly. Once I toggle power on the router, the phone connects fine with the stored password.
I have updated to the latest firmware (about a month or so ago): Version: 3.13.12 Build 120405 Rel.33996n My hardware version is: WR1043ND v1 00000000 The router is connected (via LAN port 1) to a wall drop. My upstairs roomate maintains the gig switch and modem, as well as handling the network admin. I simply am using the router as a switch to provide extra ports and broadcast the network over wifi in my apartment. All that said: I need troubleshooting this router and it's configuration before I consider buying a more expensive replacement (and if I go this route, I might add a small switch as well to give me more than 4 LAN ports to work with). I am also considering flashing to DD-WRT before replacing as well to see if that makes a difference in reliability and uptime.

My 655 router (RevB, Firmware 2.03) is connected from one side to a DSL modem and on the side to two wired PC's and via wi-fi to several other wireless clients (two smart phones and two notebooks). All is well until I try to connect a specific notebook. Connection is estabished for about 30sec and then the router drops ALL connections (including internet and local network!) and I must re-start him by un-plugging from power. This phenomena is specific to a specific notebook since with the other one

I am looking for a wireless router with the following features for less than $80.
Gigabit Ethernet
802.11n 300Mbps
Open source firmware support (optional)
I found a few of these on newegg but all of them have reviews which claim that these routers drop the wireless signal every so often and need to be reset. I have a router that has the exact same problem but it is very old now and so I understand. But a new router with this problem is not acceptable.

Wireless clients drop off Netgear router - Running a Netgear router in home. Have one desktop PC, 2 printers, 1 Mac and 3 Windows laptop connected. The devices that connect wirelessly will drop of the router in a random way. One printer, an HP all in one, will no longer function and I have to pull the plug to de-energize and restart it. My wireless network is a mess. I have called Netgear and for the first two months they had me change channels and adjust other settings which seemed to work at first but then these symptoms all came back.

There are three RT-N56U routers in my family. I have one as does my dad and uncle. Bought all 3 about a year ago. They've been rock solid since.
However, my dad has been complaining of network issues, mainly lag and slow response. During Christmas yesterday, I took some time to troubleshoot it which ended in disaster. He was on an older firmware so I had updated it. After the update, the wireless would drop every 5-10 minutes after the router rebooted. I tried rolling back the firmware and there is still the same issue.I reboot the router, wireless comes up and within 10 minutes, the wireless is down.
Most of the clients on the network are iDevices. There are two iPod Touches, 4 iPad Mini's and iPad, two iPhones and an Apple TV, all wireless. Other than that, there is a PS3 and a bunch of wired clients. Looking in the routers logs, it appears that at least one device keeps requesting a DHCP request even though it has an address. Then at some point, the router spits out this error in the log: [code]
That error just keeps counting up, starting at 1 -- Based on google info it's related to wireless drops due to ASUS firmware issue with certain wireless cards. My guess is one of the new devices has a card that they don't support, causing this issue. I was stating to think, since he has so many iDevices on his network, an Airport Extreme?

I’ve bought a router, and a wireless antenna for my laptop, since I have a high-speed internet outlet in the living room, but I use my laptop in the kitchen (I don’t have any other pc). So I’ve configured my Linksys WRT120N router in the living room, unplugged the ethernet cable from my laptop, plugged the wireless antenna in the kitchen, and everything was working fine with the wireless network. After about one month I was not able anymore to enter my network with the security key, there was actually no prompt for the security key, just a message “Cannot connect to the network”. I then had to reconfigure the router, going to the router IP address (I used the default settings, a blank for username, and “admin” as a password, as per instructions), use another network name, security key and password, and was able to start again a wireless network with the wireless antenna as before. This problem represented other 3 times (in the last 3 months), and was working fine, but now I cannot reconfigure the router anymore, since the IP address doesn’t accept BLANK/ADMIN anymore, and if I go ahead and reconfigure the router a message says I have to use the default settings in the IP address…

I purchased this router a few months ago(wrt54g2 v1.0) when I moved into st louis missouri. My ISP is charter communications. I am using windows 7 64 bit.I had no problems with this router with wired connections, however my wireless devices would drop repeatedly. I updated the firmware to the latest linksys version, but still same issue. After much research online and trying everything I could through linksys, I found a page that someone with the same problem said it could be solved by upgrading to dd-wrt freeware firmware. After much trials and problems, I finally got it installed. However I did not like dd-wrt because it would not allow FTP access no matter what i tried, and would lead to dropouts of wired connetions even though it did fix the wireless.I then decided to revert back to the previous firmware - this is where i think i messed up..I downloaded tftp and a firmware called vxworkskiller, this was supposed to be able to break the dd-wrt firmware which it did, and removed it. I continued to follow the instructions provied to me and was able to then install the linksys firmware but I accidentally upgraded the firmware for the router WRT54GS with the firmware version 7.50.2. This is now dropping both wired and wireless connections VERY frequently. My roomate is not happy as we have to power cycle the modem, router and pc's every couple of hours and sometimes that doesn't even work.I am unable to flash firmware of any version or type anymore, every upgrade fails weither I use the linksys gui, or tftp or any previously working firmware. All fail.

I have 3 devices connected to the e4200v2 via etherent, out of the 3, only my Xbox has drop about every 15-30 minutes. I have tried Cisco customer service 4 times and Xbox customer service 3 times with absolutely no luck. They both tell me that all of my setting are correct and there is nothing more that can be done.
I have tried everything that I can think of: Port triggering, port forwarding, DMZ, UPnP enabled/disable, power cycling everything, putting Xbox as Qos high priority, designating a static IP for the Xbox, clear the Xbox's cache twice, I even formatted my Xbox's hard drive in case of corrupt data. The Xbox does not disconnect when connected directly to the modem, making the router the common denominator. I am on the verge of returning the router.

just bought a new monitor and graphic card (nvidia gtx 650), proceeded to install it, then installed the drivers. Now that my pc is much more good looking, i can't connect to internet anymore I'm writing this from my netbook, so my router works just fine. I tried to reinstall the graphic card videos, downloading the latest ones, and the drivers of my wireless usb adapter aswell (it's a tp-link TL-WN321G). I had no success, my pc still doesn't see any connection. I didn't find by googling many other examples of people unable to connect to internet after installing nvidia drivers.

I come home from work on my lunch break to discover that my dog spilled her food on my router and I'm pretty sure thats how she discovered that cat5 cables are fun to saw on with her teeth, she chewed clean through 4 of them...she also chewed through the power cable and somehow cheated death in that regard.
After repairing and crimping all ethernet cables and substituting a brand new one for good measure, the DIR-615 will not see any ethernet connections, ie the lights on the front do not come on when the cable is plugged in, however I plugged my internet Cat5 into it and the little globe lights up saying that it is getting the internet. The wireless works fine as I connected to it with my phone. I know I repaired the cables properly but to rule that out I have used a brand new un-chewed cable and the router won't see that either. Is it possible that something was fried when the dog chewed through the power cable?

I'm pretty new to networking. Purchased a E4200 for my home line. When i connect directly through the modem i see speeds of about 600mbps but when i connect through the router via an ethernet cable on an empty port on the back of my e4200 my speeds drop to about 180mbps. I expected a speed loss going through wireless but why i am experiencing a speed loss by using the ethernet as a passthrough? I thought the ethernet ports on the e4200 were gigabit and support up to 1000mbps?

I purchased a WRT110 router about a 18 months ago. I am currently experiencing an issue where the wireless connection to the router will become randomly erratic. My internet connection will slow down or drop entirely. Sometimes my laptop will disconnect from the router entirely. I don't think it's the wireless card in my laptop since I have seen the issue on my desktop using a wireless N USB adapter, my Nintendo Wii, and my wife's Macbook, all within the last week.
I am positive it is the router. I set up a coninuous ping command to the router accross my laptop's wireless using "ping -t 192.168.2.1" in a command prompt. Most of the time, the round trip is 1 to 3 ms or <1 ms. When I am experiencing the connection issues, the ping time will rise significantly, sometimes going as high as 2000 - 3000 ms. About 25% of time, the ping will just time out. When this starts happening, the only way I have been able to restore proper connectivity is to manually reboot the router. The issue eventually re-appears. Sometimes in a few days, sometimes in as little as five minutes. I've gone so far as to restore the router to factory defaults and reconfigure it, but that has not made a difference.
