I can videostream from the internet OK, no problems there, but when I want to transfer data between two external HDD (NAS devices) it can get as slow as 2 Mbs.

Nov 26, 2009I have the above router, but I have noticed that the USB Transfer speed is very poor. I have a WD External HD plugged into the router and id i transfer filed from my server which is hardwired to the router I only get a transfer speed of about 2.5MB/s.
For a USB device I was kind of thinking I would be getting a minumm of atleast 50-60MB/s.

When I do a 470MB ISO files transfer between the server and the laptop, the speed is very slow, rate at 130KBs and sometime it go up to 30Mbps.Is there anyway to tweek teh WAP to get FULL speed of wireless all the time?

Mar 3, 2011I have two machines that both have WUSB600N wireless network adaptors with a Cisco WRT160N router. The file transfer speeds between the two devices maxes out at 1.6Mbs. If I run speed tests off the internet I hit 15 to 20 and downloads are excellent. I have played with all kinds of settings for the driver and router but nothing seems to work. Both these devices are running Windows 7. I tried a file transfer with an XP device as well and it maxes at about 1.6. how to increase the bandwidth??

Nov 20, 2011i have a newly formatted (i.e. empty) 2TB WD my book elite which when i connect it to my computers usb port, can transfer a 6gb video file at over 100MB/s according to the win 7 detail box. However, when i connect it to the usb port on the back of the e4200 and try to transfer the same file, it only goes at 8MB/s max ... it appears to be going at usb 1 speed. i've got the latest firmware on both the e4200 and the my book 1111 and everything seems to be working fine for both, except this transfer rate when connected to the e4200.granted, cisco doesn't specifically list this drive as being tested, but the router does recognize it and shows it as usb 2.0, but yet the transfer speed is just too slow.8MB/s is just not workable...i could just connect the drive directly to the computer and share it that way, but connecting it to the e4200 was one of the reasons i bought the e4200.

The HDD is definitely capable of at least 80MB/s if plugged directly into the PC. Is it meant to be this slow or there's a fix somewhere which I'm not aware of? Thought it's suppose to be the top of the line products but seems so inferior if I were to compare with other high end routers in the market which performs better, faster and definitely much cheaper.

Mar 24, 2012I have recently purchased a Cisco E4200 to replace my D-LINK DIR-655, which I thought was defective because I was getting slow wirless file transfer speed, regardless of setting, location and client.Using the E4200, when I transfer a file from a PC to another, both connected at 300mb on the 2.4ghz band, the file transfer rate reported by windows 7 and networx is from 2MB/s to 3.5MB/s. I think those transfer rates are not acceptable. Is that a good assumption ? I would expect something in the range of 10MB/s (which is what I get with a cheap dlink router, wired)
I also had great difficulty finding a channel. I had to try them all one-by-one as the auto channel selection made my PCs connect at 130mb.The E4200 is setup as follows:
-WPA-Personal
-Channel 5
-802.11n only
I have tried 3 different computers with different network adapters and they all underperform (IMO..).There are no other wireless networks in my area.I also took the E4200 to my office which is very crowed. Every single channel is occupied by several wireless networks. I get a file transfer speed PC to PC of about 2MB.I basically could have kept my DIR-655 as the speeds are identical.

Mar 16, 2013I am getting very slow window file transfer speed (4 Mbps per second) between two connecting servers in Cisco 6509 switch. I have connect the two laptops in 6509 switch in same module using the same vlan and try to copy the files from one laptop to another and vice versa and got the same speed on 4 to 5 Mbps per second. Switch utilization is not more than 10% and both the laptops are connected in 1 Gbps full duplex.
I have checked by removing the gateway in both laptop but the output is same.

Feb 13, 2011url...I have 2 PC's connected to a DIR-615 through 802.11n and each have a DWA-130 802.11n adapter. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on both computers. The specs of both systems are very high.I only have these 2 computers on wireless right now. Their signal is full strength, they are less than 10 feet away from the router.I am getting 2.0 MB/s when transferring files between them and although I am not expecting to get 17MB/s, but I should be getting better speed than 2 MB/s.Hard drive specs are Crucial C300 SATA 6.0, WD Caviar Blue SATA 3.0, and WD Caviar Green SATA 3.0. My Green drive reads/writes at 100MB/s, My Blue 125MB/s, and My SSD 225MB/s. So, those are not the bottleneck.Is there any other settings I can try? I have not messed with my DWA-130 settings nor have I messed with Windows.

Oct 23, 2012im experiencing very slow transfer rates averaging 600 kb/s when transfering files. my PC has a compatible dwa-552 card and both the router and card have latest drivers / firmware. i have various changes on the router and to no avail. all devices PC / laptops running N @ 20 mhz / channel 11. i can see 2 other networks but very low signal using diff channels.what setting might i be overlooking in the router that might cause this slow trans rate? incidentally, when i transfer .jpg or .pdf files the transfer improves to 2.5 mb/s. however, when i transfer a folder containing subfolders with diff file types the trans rate drops sharply to 600 kb/s.

May 16, 2013My Home/Small Business network now utilizes several D-Link products. It is comprised of a DLink 205 cable modem (old but reliable and perfectly adequate for the speed I get from my ISP); 2 - DIR-825 Dual Band WiFi Routers (Primary - Rev B1; Secondary - Rev A1); a DLink 5-port Unmanaged Smart Switch (GO series); an HP Proliant N54L Microserver with 6 internal and 2 external HDD's (total of 19TB); 4-5 workstations (HP Laptops); 2 - Brother Laser Printers/Scanner/Copiers; a Toshiba Thrive Android Tablet; an iPad Tablet; Android Smartphones; iPhones; and a large screen HDTV. The Modem, WiFi Routers, Switch, and Server are connected together with CAT6E ethernet cable. The printers are USB 2.0 to the server. The external HDD's are USB 3.0 to the Server.
When I measure transfer speeds of Large files (single 30GB iso movie files) between HDD's internal to the Server and USB 3.0 external <=> internal, I can achieve transfer rates of 140MB/sec - 150MB/sec. This is the limitation of 7200rpm HDD's. When I measure the transfer rate from the Server to a Work Station by CAT6E ethernet cable (25ft length) connected to the DLink 5-port gigabit switch, I measure transfer speeds of around 65MB/sec - 70MB/sec with a peak transfer rate of around 95MB/sec. This is ok but not as fast as other people seem to get. I would be hope to see rates in excess of 100MB/sec. Theoretical maximum for 1GB being 125MB/sec but the specs on the ports say they should operate up to 2GB (250MB/sec).
Wireless transfer rates are where I really am having trouble. Transferring the same 30GB iso movie file over wireless between two Work Stations or between a Work Station and the Server gives a maximum transfer speed of 7.2MB/sec and an average transfer speed of around 4.5MB/sec. If I am streaming multiple streams and trying to transfer a iso file, the transfer speed drops down to as low as 350KB/sec. This is too slow.
My network is setup to do Bare Metal Backups of the Work Stations. This can entail transferring up to 100GB of mixed files to the back-up drives on the Server for each Work Station. At 4.5MB/sec it takes just under 7 hours to back up the Work Station. If multiple Work Stations are backed up, it takes longer. Too Long to be realistic.
How to increase the transfer speeds on the wireless network? I have seen other people post wireless transfer speeds for their networks in excess of 13MB/sec. If I could get 7MB/sec or above when backing up all the Work Stations simultaneously. That would be doable.

Feb 13, 2011my problem is that i have a computer connected via gigabit lan with a cat5e cable.i have a notebook with a d-link dwa-140 usb wifi adapter connected.and the max transfer speed i get is 14 mbps. d-link dir-655 firmware 1.34eu.in windows it reports 300mbps.in the router it reports 270 mbps sometimes 300. the settings in the router is 40mhz only,. ch 13. wpa2 aes. as described in the sticky.the devices are within 3 ft of each other.

Jul 29, 2011I am having issues with transfer speed on my network. I have a D-Link DIR-655 wireless N router. Two PC's. My gaming PC is also a server of sorts. E6600, 4 gb of RAM, Wireless N PCI card, Win 7 Pro 64.
I have a small e6400 machine, 4 gb ram, Win 7 Pro 32, 1gigabit connection, hardwired to the router. This one is hooked up to the TV. I want to stream my movie/tv collection from my gamin PC, which is on the other side of the room to the TV. The gaming machine/server has 4 drives, with a dedicated 1tb drive for video storage. The machine connected to the TV has one 300 gb drive. Right now, I am getting 1.8 mbps transfer speeds. This is causing very choppy playback. I am using VLC for playback. I am using WPA2 for network security.
How can i increase my transfer speeds across the network? Is 1.8mbps as good as it gets?
D-Link 321 - Gigabit Network But No Faster Transfer Speed
Aug 8, 2011I cant figure it out and can not find a solution. All three computers have gigabit nics, I have gigabit router and switch, my d-link 321 is set to gigabit, the only thing on my network that is not gigabit is my printer. I'm not getting gigabit transfer speed from my computer to dlink 321. I rarely do computer to computer transfers, so I dont know what the speed is of that. The best tranfer rate is from 7-12mb. I am also using cat 5e wires on all connections. What am I missing?

Mar 17, 2011I live in the tampa bay area, I have bright house (BHN) as my service provider, which provides a Road Runner Lightning (40/5) package. I previously used BHN's top tier (20/2) back in July (and prior) with no problems.
After converting to Lightning in August of this year (2010). Of course, BHN (and every other provider) wants to force a modem/router down your throat, so I had them bridge it (in short, turn it into a dummy modem with no routing). I had an SMC branded modem gateway at the time. I work from home 2 days a week (so I can spend more time with my kids during morning, lunch, right after work) and this requires me to use QoS to ensure my VOIP work calls don't get dropped, if the family is watching youtube videos or watching netflex.
My network was as follows SMC Modem >WAN IP>>WAN Port>>D-link DIR-655>>Switch Ports>PC1, PC2, PC3
Everything seemed fine (from a usability stand point) till about 2 weeks ago when my upload speed seemed to grind to halt. Normally I was able to upload about 200-300K per second, and I noticed this dropped to about 45K per second during a drop box upload. First thing I did was power cycle both my modem and router (in the proper/usual order). After they both come up, I start using speed test to find out what my upload speeds were. I was getting about 39Mbps down, but only .56Mbps up still. I factory reset my router.... test, similar speeds. Power cycle all computers (just in case), and then modem/router. Tested, similar speeds. Updated the firmware to the latest. Same issue
Called BHN customer service, they factor reset it, but it wasn't in bridge mode. If I by passed the 655, in factory mode (non bridge mode) upload speeds returned to better than expected states. If I bridged the cable modem, upload speeds seemed to crash.
Had BHN replace the modem, seemed fixed for a day, then issue came back. Had them come back out and replace it again, this time with a Motorolla Surfboard modem... same issue. Fine during factory reset, however after they bridge the modem, upload speeds were fine. Told BHN I would take it from there.. Connected up the DIR-655, and upload speeds crashed again. (.6Mbps). Called D-Link Support, and the Chinese English speaking rep seemed to not be listening to me and tried to have me adjust my MTU as well as Wireless settings. Long story short... the rep was a level 0 id10t and I hope D-link will consider hiring better employees/contractors. So I was all about to give up and replace it with a DD-WRT capable router (which it takes me a lot to want to swap hardware), when I discovered the wan shaping was on. Which I thought to myself... nah... QoS has never messed up before... why would it be the cause. Turned off wan shapping... and voila. Issue seemed to be insta-resolved.
Unsatisfied with that... I decided to dig a lil deeper. I turned on Wan shaping again, but decided to set the settings manually instead of auto detect.
Here are the settings I used... (Advanced Tab>QoS)
Enable Traffic Shaping - Checked
Automatic Uplink Speed - Unchecked
Manual Uplink Speed - 5000
Connection Type: Cable or Other Broadand Network
Enable QoS Engine - Checked Automatic Classification - unchecked (this checked seemed to affect my upload speed by about 5-10% during testing) Dynamic Fragmentation - unchecked (this checked seemed to be the worse enemy for upload speed)
While I know I'm not any network guru (still have to use a subnet calculator for subnetting), I think I did a pretty good job drilling down the issue (once I got passed my service provider replacing modems).
Anyways, I've had overall good luck with D-Link products, even have a 5 port 10/100 switch (all metal) from 1998 that works great. Hopefully, D-Link will just either put more documentation on the web, or hire better employees.

However, when I try to transfer files from one computer to another on the LAN, the file transfers are ridiculously low, right around 16KB/s. I have CAT6 cable for all connections, but am baffled by what could cause such a slow speed. I'm trying to transfer files from my desktop (win7) to my server (Windows Home Server 2011).

D-Link 2640B / Transfer Rate Slow On International Server Downloads?
Jul 20, 2011i have a 4Mbps DSL internet connection with 3 PCs connected through a router. 2 are connected wirelessly and the other is wired via an ethernet cable. i noticed that when downloading a file from an international server, the transfer rate on the wireless PCs is 2-3 times slower than on the wired PC. the wireless PC would get about 150-200kb/s, whereas the wired PC can max out to 450kb/s on a single download. however when i download from a local or nearby server instead, the transfer rate on the wireless and wired PCs are the same and can both reach up to 450kb/s per download. i don't understand why the wireless connection is slower to international servers compared to the wired PC.my wireless signal is at 54Mbps with "excellent" strength. i also tested the ping results from both the wireless and wired PCs to international servers and they are pretty much the same.
- all PCs are running windows XP SP3
- the modem/router is a D-Link 2640B

D-Link DIR-655 :: Slow Down Uplink Speed?
Jun 26, 2011My DIR655 is A4 with firmware v.135.
My normal uplink speed is above 4 Mbps but the speed goes down to 0.4 to 0.8 Mbps. The above unit was received from D-Link as a replacement for the same reason, but it worked for at lease 12 hours.
If the power is OFF/ON cycled, the normal speed comes back but last only about 10 minutes.

Have 5MB fiber and consistently receive 4.7-5.0MB when connected directly to my laptop (windows XP, Dell wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-card, 802.11g only). I followed the CD instruction to set up the router and when connected wirelessly I consistently get 2.4 - 2.7 MB. When I connect a cable from the router to my laptop, I get the 4.7 - 5.0MB that I get when connected directly. I've tried a second laptop (Vista, 802.11g only) and when connected wirelessly I get 4.7-5.0 MB. A friend of mine who has a laptop (Windows 7, g/n) also connected at 4.7-5.0 MB.

Nov 13, 2012Recently I have noticed my internet get slow. I use a comcast cable internet connection that is directly connected to my dlink DR 655. I use the megapath internet speed test [URL] when testing my internet speed. Have a laptop that is usually on wireless and an XP workstation that is connected to the 655 directly with static IP.
I would be browsing the internet and all the sudden the internet would get really slow. This would happen on both my desktop and the laptop and my speed test on both machines would be around .3 Mbps. When this happens I would go and connect the laptop with the ethernet pot directly to the modem. Of course a reboot of the modem has to occur before a connection can be made so once I do that all the sudden my internet is back up to par (12 Mbps). I go ahead and put my network back to the way it was and it all goes back up to 12 Mbps. I have called comcast several times and they are telling me it my router.
This picture shows a snapshot of some windows from the laptop. The CMD ipconfig on the bottom left shows the laptop network settings when connected directly to the modem. The CMD ipconfig on the upper left is the network settings when connected to the router. The web page on the right shows the WAN network settings when the 655 is connected to the cable modem.
Notice the DNS servers, they are different when the 655 is connected to the modem versus when the laptop is connected to the modem. Could this be part of my problem? I have not seen were I can manually change 655 DNS entries ... is there a way to do this? Or should I not even be worried about it?
D-Link DNS 323 - NAS Storage Slow Network Speed
Jul 6, 2011i set-up the D-LINK DNS 323 NAS unit with RAID 1 (dual 2-terabyte 5400 rpm drives) it works, but it is slow in copying files between my computer and it (8 minutes to copy 4.5 gig file between NAS and my PC). i am using Cisco WRT160N router. replaced the network wires to the latest spec, and my computer has realtek PCIe GBE network adapter.

I am using a PPPOE connection , I even got my ISP to check my settings, and he said it was alright but it reduces my speed by a lot. Usually I download with 1 MB/s with the router on wi-fi I hardly get 50 kb/s and on lan max is 100 kb/s.
