Home Network :: Wireless Connects But Doesn't Browse
Feb 12, 2011
My laptop is able to connect to the wireless router in my home, but the browser will never load a page, status is shown "connected". However, when I try on other laptops, they are able to surf the net. I have tried using my laptop at my friend's place with a different wireless router and it works at his place as I was able to surf the internet through my wireless! So, I've tried resetting my personal modem to factory default and it still doesn't work.

I have two PC laptops. One operates Windows Vista, the other has XP. I recently just had to do a hard reset on my linksys wpn824v3 router and made a new network name and password. I also changed the password for the router (suspect I may have a virus). My girlfriends computer (vista) sees the new network name and connects fine, my XP computer doesn't even see the new network, but it sees my neighbors networks.. and the laptops are sitting right next to each other.

My flatmates and I recently got Sky broadband - their laptops connect just fine to the internet and they are able to use it without any problems. Mine also connects, but I can't do things like browse or use Skype, etc. When I go into Google Chrome, I'm told there is a DNS error that was unable to be resolved. Mozilla tells me that I have a problem with my server, and IE doesn't work either. Also, I am receiving very few packets. For every 2,000 or so packets that are sent, I only receive 2 or 6. When I click 'repair' I am told that my IP address cannot be renewed. The thing is, the internet works on my netbook at my mother's house, yet it doesn't work in my flat or other places like wifi spots.
I've tried so many things, such as clearing the DNS cache, releasing and renewing IP address, I've set the properties of the wireless connection to obtain DNS and IP automatically, I've tried pinging, I've turned off all my firewalls, I tried system restore, I've fiddled with certain keys in the registry, I even rebooted my entire hard disk last night and it still doesn't work! I'm really at my wit's end with this and I don't know what else to do. The problem is way beyond my comprehension now.

My MacBook works fine with my linksys router and RR internet. My wife's toshiba laptop running vista establishes a connection, but will not browse the net. My neighbor says she's having the same problem with her PC when trying to connect to my router (we live very close together).

Been wondering what would make a LAN only run on 10mbps. I recently experienced this on two clients sites. It won't just connect when I configure the LAN to run on 100mbps. Only connects on 10mbps. What could be responsible for this? Won't this affect the performance of ones application?

I am running a VPN server on my desktop at home, with all the default settings, and i checked the box that allows clients to connect over the internet. this is win7 x64 computer. I opened up port 1723 with PPTP protocol on my E4200 router. On the client i am running win7 x64 as well. I am able to connect to the vpn, from another internet connection, but there is no local network acess. It says the status is No Internet Access. and the IP that is assigned is the 169.x.x.x one that windows defaults when it doesnt find a dhcp server. How can i get the client to connect with full local network access. Right now being connected to the vpn, it means nothing, i have no access other than being "connected".

Router connects to ISP but cannot browse the Internet. I have updated the firmware to 2.0.3.2 and that did not work. Reset the router to factory settings and that did not work either. Router had worked until the ISP changed the ONT. The router worked initally after the ONT was changed, but that changed sometime during the day as it did not work that night. The ISP gave me a netgear router and that works, so I can connect, but I would rather the RVS4000 would work. I assume a setting at the ISP, but do not know which one. I get an error on the computer "name resolution for the name dns.msftncsi.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded" I can ping, tracert and my little weather gadget works, but a web page will not display

I'm working at a high school which has pretty large grounds. The network is configured via one central router and a lot of access points. Recently, they shut down my access point for a moment after connecting it again. The access point works fine (after finding my problem we've tested a lot of computers and they all connect to it and the internet). My laptop and my desktop - the only computers connected to access point when it was rebooted - do not connect to this access point however!
Instead, they "choose" to connect to an access point farther away, so that my signal strength is extremely low (and hence, my internet connection is very poor). How do I get my computers to connect to the previous access point with the strong signal?
The laptop runs Windows 7 32-bit and the desktop runs Windows 7 64-bit.

I have a Dell XPS 8300 desktop and have been having issues with the modem connecting to the wireless network just fine but, I'm not able to access the internet. This has only occurred over the last 24 hours and is frustrating. I've read some other recent posts and have gone back and done the System Restore to before the installation of Windows Updates a day or so ago and that has worked twice today. But I'm not a PC expert and I would like to know how I could resolve this issue permanently without having to undo the updates with System Restore every time I power up and log in. How do I figure out what setting is being undone to disconnect the internet connection from my XPS 8300?

I'm having an issue connecting to my wireless router. I can connect fine with security disabled, but it doesn't connect if I enable WPA. It says there's a "timeout" issue when I try to connect with WPA enabled. No one else is having issues connecting with their laptops and smartphones, so it must be a problem with my computer. [code]

As the topic states, the wireless card finds the signal without issues, but then does not transfer any packets after it connects. Only one computer is having this issue, all others connect perfectly fine. Also, there was no significant change to the computer recently, the problem seems to have sprung about randomly.

My cable modem and router are in a closet. From there, wires run through the house to multiple locations. One of the locations has had a wireless access point (WAP) installed which has worked flawlessly. I want to put another device at that location that doesn't have wireless capability, so I tried to connect a switch. The switch does not connect. When I disconnect the cable from the WAP and plug it into the switch, the light on the switch port that would indicate a connection does not come on. When I then connect the WAP to another port on the switch, the light on its port does come on but it does not see the router. I've tried multiple cables (I even tried a crossover cable) and I've tried a second switch with the same result. When I plug back into the WAP, it works fine again. The switch works fine at other locations in the house.
One more thing - When I bought the house, the wire to this particular location was unterminated. I had never done any wiring before but I decided to try to do this myself. So, I read up on the process and bought the necessary tools. When I stripped the wires, I found that the twisted pairs were not just twisted (as they were in the patch cable I practiced on) but each pair was in a single strand of insulation (I'm not sure exactly how to describe this but there were four strands of plastic, each with two wires packaged inside.) I didn't know how to separate the two wires that were packaged together so I wired the connectors with all four color - color/white pairs next to each other. I know that's not the standard. But from what I read, as long as I wired both ends of the cable the same way, everything should work. And in fact, it did for connecting the WAP.

Now oddly enough, I can connect to and download games from Steam, but I cannot browse to websites using IE or Firefox and I cannot connect to MSN messenger.

"Your DNS appears unable to resolve IP adresses" and then...
When I click repair, it can't fix it.
If I right click on the connection and click on status, I see...
If I click on Details, I then see...
If I right click on the connection and click on Troubleshoot Problems, I get this...

From home I would like to browse my intranet at work where I have a Linux box, which I will call "W", i.e. url...My router at home closes port 22 but maps port 2222 to port 22 on my server "S" which resolves to mydomain.org.
My main machine at home, "M", is where I do my work from home. I thought this might work: [code] On M I tell firefox that S:6666 is the proxy for all sites like url...
So far my browser on M cannot find the intranet web sites with this scheme. How do I make this work? What can I use to debug this

I have a printer connected to another computer (Win XP) and it wasn't showing up on the network so I followed some installation process to install a network driver or something. Now the printer is working fine. BUT... Now that computer is having internet problems. It connects to the internet fine but some programs say it doesn't. Like Microsoft Outlook. A message always shows up saying "Must work offline" or something. And I cant listen to some things on the internet because a message comes up saying you must connect to the internet.

I have a friend with a secure wireless network in his house. When I first took my laptop over there I couldn't connect to it even with his network password. I spent some time tweaking his router by updating the firm ware via his laptop. I was able to get connected with great speeds with my laptop but his laptop couldn't do anything. I contacted the router support and it was recommended I do a hard reset on the router. So I did that. Now we can both get connected to the router and his laptop does fine but my laptop won't load a single page of anything. It shows I am connected at 54Mbs but the page times out before it loads a single bar in the IE progress window. Heck, even on dial up at home it only takes 15 seconds to fully load my home page. I double checked the frequency to see if that would make a difference. Doing that verified I'm on the right frequency. He still has the security set up on the router which does keep me from connecting until I add the security key. Then it connects fine but as I said with no thru put.I have a Sony Vaio FE660 with XP Media Edition. He is running Vista.

I have an issue with my work laptop connecting to my home network. It will connect to the internet but only briefly and then the connection is dropped. I reset or repair the connection and I can get it to re-connect but then it drops again after only a minute or two. I tried to connect it to the router directly with a cable (turned wireless off) and had the same issue. This laptop has no issues connecting wirelessly at work or to other wi-fi networks I have tried. I have another laptop in the house that has no issues connecting to the home network & internet. The issue seems only to be with this laptop at home. The laptop is a Dell using 64 bit Vista. The router is a D-link DI-524, 802.11g router and I have a DSL connection.

When I use LAN to connect 'unidentified network'.it will connect via wireless, but it seems random and then if the machine sleeps or is restarted it's back to square one.
