Home Network :: LAN Only Connects On 10mbps
Apr 14, 2012
Been wondering what would make a LAN only run on 10mbps. I recently experienced this on two clients sites. It won't just connect when I configure the LAN to run on 100mbps. Only connects on 10mbps. What could be responsible for this? Won't this affect the performance of ones application?

My laptop is able to connect to the wireless router in my home, but the browser will never load a page, status is shown "connected". However, when I try on other laptops, they are able to surf the net. I have tried using my laptop at my friend's place with a different wireless router and it works at his place as I was able to surf the internet through my wireless! So, I've tried resetting my personal modem to factory default and it still doesn't work!

I am running a VPN server on my desktop at home, with all the default settings, and i checked the box that allows clients to connect over the internet. this is win7 x64 computer. I opened up port 1723 with PPTP protocol on my E4200 router. On the client i am running win7 x64 as well. I am able to connect to the vpn, from another internet connection, but there is no local network acess. It says the status is No Internet Access. and the IP that is assigned is the 169.x.x.x one that windows defaults when it doesnt find a dhcp server. How can i get the client to connect with full local network access. Right now being connected to the vpn, it means nothing, i have no access other than being "connected".

Have updated all the drivers, uninstalled and re-installed devices, reset ip, dumped the dns several times, etc.So here is the ipconfig stuff....ignore the cable connect I only have the wifi on at the moment. I have stared at this to the point where I know naathing .Is the tunnel adaptor the indication that the card is out? I'm working at a high school which has pretty large grounds. The network is configured via one central router and a lot of access points. Recently, they shut down my access point for a moment after connecting it again. The access point works fine (after finding my problem we've tested a lot of computers and they all connect to it and the internet). My laptop and my desktop - the only computers connected to access point when it was rebooted - do not connect to this access point however!
Instead, they "choose" to connect to an access point farther away, so that my signal strength is extremely low (and hence, my internet connection is very poor). How do I get my computers to connect to the previous access point with the strong signal?
The laptop runs Windows 7 32-bit and the desktop runs Windows 7 64-bit.

I have a Dell XPS 8300 desktop and have been having issues with the modem connecting to the wireless network just fine but, I'm not able to access the internet. This has only occurred over the last 24 hours and is frustrating. I've read some other recent posts and have gone back and done the System Restore to before the installation of Windows Updates a day or so ago and that has worked twice today. But I'm not a PC expert and I would like to know how I could resolve this issue permanently without having to undo the updates with System Restore every time I power up and log in. How do I figure out what setting is being undone to disconnect the internet connection from my XPS 8300?

The Setup On my home network, I am running Windows Server 2003 as domain controller and file server with a SCSi attached disk array.I have several client PC's. 2 running Windows XP service pack 3, 1 laptop running Windows 7 Service pack 1 and a desktop also running Windows 7 Service Pack 1.These are connected by 2 switches - 1 x Netgear gigabit switch, and a Linksys PSUS4 USB Print server at 100mbps.The PC I use the most is the desktop running Win7 and transfer files to the server. After transferring some large files from the clients to the server, I noticed that the speed was considerably slower than what I was expecting it to be. After investigating, and eliminating elements of the network, I discovered that the Server NIC was running at 10mbps. I tried the usual things like forcing the NIC to run at 100mbps Full Duplex but this had no effect. Strangely, if I reboot the server while the desktop is still switched on the connection goes back to 100mbps. However if I reboot the desktop, or even alter the network settings, it immediatley reverts back to 10mbps.

I have an issue with my work laptop connecting to my home network. It will connect to the internet but only briefly and then the connection is dropped. I reset or repair the connection and I can get it to re-connect but then it drops again after only a minute or two. I tried to connect it to the router directly with a cable (turned wireless off) and had the same issue. This laptop has no issues connecting wirelessly at work or to other wi-fi networks I have tried. I have another laptop in the house that has no issues connecting to the home network & internet. The issue seems only to be with this laptop at home. The laptop is a Dell using 64 bit Vista. The router is a D-link DI-524, 802.11g router and I have a DSL connection.

I have a Time Warner Cable business class service with no static IP, with a wireless modem which is plugged to a CAT5 distribution panel. On the jacks (2 other rooms on the house) I have a Linksys E3000 and a Linksys Valet router for signal boost and gadgets usage (TV, cameras, etc). The main router (TWC) has it's own external IP which TWC assigns to me and internally distributes via DHCP the range 192.168.0.x. With that said:
- The E3000 has a 192.168.0.6 IP -- this is fixed setup on the TWC router (ubee brand) by MAC address
- The Valet has a 192.168.0.7 IP -- this is fixed setup on the TWC router (ubee brand) by MAC address
- The main router has the 192.168.0.1 as the gateway and web-interface
Whenever I connect something to the E3000, it is distributing the 192.168.1.x range and the valet 192.168.2.x range. That works perfectly for my home based business until I decided to use more stuff on the network such as a IP printer, IP cameras, etc.
- The IP cameras are connected to the E3000 due to signal strength and I have manually assigned them the 192.168.1.15 and 192.168.1.16 IPs and ports 9001 and 9002.
- The printer is connected to the E3000 and I have manually assigned the IP 192.168.1.30.
Issue 1: Port forwarding On the main router (TWC - UBEE) I have tried to setup a port forwarding by informing the Local IP as 192.168.0.6 (E3000 IP), Internal Port 0, Public Interface IP (0.0.0.0), Ext Start Port 9001, Ext End Port 9001, Protocol - Both, Enabled Yes. On the E3000 I did the same config (screen shot attached e3000.png).This is not working properly. I can't get into the camera.
Issue 2: Printer/ The printer is only accessible if I connect to the E3000 (because it is on the 192.168.1.x network)
Issue 3: How to configure all the devices on the same subnet? If I want everyone to be on the 192.168.0.x network, how to configure properly the E3000 and the Valet? I have tried to force them into the same network but it would not work properly. It would not get an IP from the UBEE router (main).

I had tried to connect my internet using a 10/100 standard Ethernet card but my net connection was fluctuating. My Brother who is a network engineer told me to switch back to 10 mbps from 100 mbps full duplex and he prayed if that might work. Luckily enough it worked and solved my purpose of delivering uninterrupted net connection.

nyway, I've had an internet connection set up at my house for quite some time, and recently I have noticed that my online games have begun to lag. And I know it is not due to my hardware, it is online-lag, like jumping, and almost teleporting to places. I play games like Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, Battlefield 2: Project Reality, and more.I have a 10mbps download and 1mbps upload, so that is an optimum speed for playing games like this, I know. And the connection is split between 3 computers in my home. (1 desktop and 2 laptops, all connecting wirelessely)I have all the modem, and router set up properly.. I just don't understand why I am having this lagging problem. If someone could explain it to me,

Im currently experiencing an intermittent connection on my office and we just upgraded from 4Mbps to 10Mbps. Latency is high when pinging commercial website like yahoo.com,it shoots up to 200sec. ISP router is connected to two HP Procurve Switch, then the workstation and servers. Already did a router/modem test and it failed, I advise our ISP to change the router but it were still experiencing the same problem. Network drop is also experience even after office hours, eventhough only few workstations are working.

I have been paying Time Warner Cable for 50mbps download, but have been getting just under 10mbps for quite some time (ethernet,NOT wireless, we have no wireless-capable devices) After hours on the phone with Tier 3 tech support, two visits from technicians, a replaced modem and countless hours googling, I am at my wits end. When I go into the Task Manager and look at Networking, it shows the Link Speed at 10 Mbps.I have gone into my network adapter settings and set the Speed/Duplex to 100mbps Full, as the TWC rep said. Also switched cables, powercycled, rebooted the PC, etc.Google searches suggest going into the router settings and raising the cap through there, but I can't find the proper setting for my device (Motorola SURFboard SBG6580) if they even exist at all. it's using slightly outdated firmware ( SBG6580-3.3.1.0-GA-09-058-NOSH ) and that that could be causing the problem.

So I'm on the 100mbps virgin fibre optic broadband, and for the past couple of days, every now and again my speed drops drastically. It's not the Internet, because I've tested it on my laptop both wireless and plugged in. Even my phone and iPad are getting higher speed.
When I first got the internet(About a week ago) my download speed was 100+ mbps, but now my Link speed is constantly at 10mbps, even if I set my NIC to 1gbps full duplex, I've tried disabling and re enabling, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, updating drivers. Restarting the router, starting it in Modem mode.

Here's the layout: Cable modem in the basement. Several devices in which I'd prefer a wired connection in the basement. Upstairs on the 1st and 2nd floor of the house are many devices in which wifi is fine or preferred. Here's the problem: As you might guess, wifi is weak upstairs and certainly on the patio and 2nd floor. I have an access point upstairs that I've experimented with but it is flaky.

I am a new student in networking, taking the CCNA courses, and now want to rewire my home. I currently have a cable modem and E2500 setup running my network. I want to get the modem and router out of my computer room and in the basement where the cable enters the house. I want to do this to clean up the computer room wiring a bit and to run line drops to different rooms in the house where the internet will be utilized.Currently there are two PC's, a laptop, a tablet, sometimes a phone, and an XBOX using the internet. I want to get my printer back up and running on the network but thats another story. Only one PC is currently hardwired. I would like to run two cables into the room with the PC and XBOX that are currently using wireless, at least two into the computer room for the PC and network printer, and one or two into the living room for the blue ray player and possibly an internet tv.

I've been trying to find a response or a fix to this issue for a few weeks now.My DIR-655 RevB router is currently at firmware 2.07NA, and has speeds of around 30Mbps down and 10Mbps up when connected directly through wired connections. However over wifi, I am only getting around about 5 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up. I've tried the 'usual' fixes suggested on here, change broadcast signal to manual, not auto, shutting of QoS shaping, all of that. However nothing seems to be improving the speed.

This PC is connected to a Press machine in our Production area (Lan only with machine and PLC's) so I disable the LAN to the press then the 3G connection comes up with bps activity. I want to use teamviewer on the PC for remote support but teamviewer is unable to connect like it use to and its a free license. I tried internet explorer and "page cannot be displayed". There are no special proxy settings and DHCP IP. ( Windows XP with admin rights)
Whats confusing is even if the lan is disabled, the 3G connection would only come up now and then, but then I could add. The PC has viruses and very slow at the moment and I have loaded free AVG just to scan and clean some to see if it works. I cannot format the PC or something like that because there is production software and applications on with special settings that runs the R10 000 000 press machine and if the PC stops... trouble :/ I have ordered new PC for the press machine 18 000 Euros but that would take 12 weeks to arrive and if I could get the connection internet working on the machine it would be great.

I have a 9-year old PPPoE DSL modem at home whose ethernet port is only 10mbps. For some reason I am unable to establish PPPoE connection on my E1000 when connected to this modem (PPPoE login is correct, as it works with a different router when connected to the same modem). Someone suggested that the problem may be that the DSL modem is unable to negotiate Ethernet connection because E1000's WAN port is 10/100mbps (autosensing failing?). The suggestion was to manually set the router's WAN port to 10mbps. Is there such a switch somewhere on the E1000 - I cannot find it in web admin console anywhere?
Any other guesses as to why the router and the modem cannot connect?
FWIW, the dsl modem is a SpeedStream 5360 E1000 hardware v 2.1; firmware 2.1.02

I have setup a webserver on my home PC and I have forwarded port 80 on my router to the IP adress of the PC that is running the web server. The web server is working great; I can get to my web pages from outside of my home by going to http://MyIpAddress/Anyway, the problem is with the Windows Media Player plugin I'm using. I want to embed 6GB MPEG-2 videos into my web pages. I have some videos on my PC and I want to be able to watch them remotely by connecting into my web page. It works fine when I'm at home; other PCs can connect and play the videos no problem. The problem is when I'm at work. When I'm at work, I go to my web page (via my IP address in a web browser) and the Media Player plugin says "Connecting" for a minute, then it says Ready, but the video will not play. I tried using a smaller, AVI file (680 MB) instead to see if the problem was streaming such a large file, but the video still would not play.Do I need to foward more ports on my router so that Windows Media Player can connect back and get the information it needs?
