Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT54G Drops Internet Intermittently
Sep 14, 2011
My Linksys Router WRT54G has recently (yesterday) started dropping the internet after being online for a few hours. The current setup has been in place for several years. Â I started with the Broadband provider and they verified that the signal and cable modem is working properly. Â My own tests back this up. At first I simply reset the router. Â Unplugged it for 30 seconds and plugged it back in. Â Internet is back. Â Then I tried resetting the cable modem and the router. Â This works as well but the problem presists. Resetting the router alone has the same affect. So, something with the router is causing it to drop the internet. Â The network does not drop however. Â I can still use my network drive and the computers indicate a network with no internet connection.

Wired computer runs XP sp3. Wireless runs Ubuntu 10.04. Hooked to Embarq DSL modem. Setup worked flawlessly for a year or more. Now the router is sporadically dropping the internet connection for both PCs. I haven't discovered how to guarantee an immediate reconnection so the desktop is now connected directly to the modem. The modem is apparently stable as I'm not losing the internet connection. When the router is in the circuit, the internet connection may or may not appear shortly.Â

For eight months we have not had any problems with our new WRVS4400N (V2.0.2.1) connected to a Verizon/Westell 6500 to provide DSL internet for our network with DHCP on our server... No changes have been made to the router or modem since initial setup; but, then it started -- Our internet connection would drop intermittently. Sometimes every 5 or 10 minutes - sometimes every hour. Verizon has tested the lines which came up ok, then they sent a tech who changed the wire pair coming into the building for the DSL line and retested the lines which again came up ok, then they provided us with a new modem (now a Verizon/Westell 7500). After all that, the DSL still connects then disconnects intermittently. I am now wondering if the issue lies with the WRVS4400N.

I have a WAG160N v2 and a UK Online broadbad account, windows xp. The connection intermittmently drops out, approx 15-30 times per day. I have spoken to my ISP and had the line checked (no packet loss issue), checked the settings on the router against my ISP and also updated the router firmware all with no improvement.

Our wireless network has started to drop out periodically. If we pull power and restore, the network immediately comes back up on all our our devices. We have the WRT54G, and we have 2 PCs, 2 Macs, and 3 iPhones, and a wired home phone. Normally there are not this many devices connected, but with everyone home for Thanksgiving and all these devices on the network we have started to see this issue.
Â
Are there simply more devices than the router can handle? Is one of the devices crashing the network for everyone? What typically will cause something like this?

We recently moved and upgraded our internet service from 1.5 Mbps to 4Mbps with CenturyLink. However, since our service was activated last Thursday, the internet connection intermittently drops and will not recover unless I reboot the modem. The period of up-time will last anywhere between fifteen seconds to several hours, usually falling along the five-to-ten minute range. No difference when using ethernet/wifi. The DSL light stays on, and the Internet light remains on as well.

I installed the RV220W Router in my office about 2 weeks ago and everything works perfectly for 3-4 days but then my connection drops out and the router must be restarted to restore connectivity. When I say the connection drops basically the internet connection drops out and my network connections drop shortly thereafter. Usually the wireless connections lose connectivity followed within a few minutes by the wired connections.
Â
Is there something in my firewall settings that could cause this issue? I have checked with my ISP to verify there are no problems on their end.

Ive had the WRT160Nv3 for a while and its all been great but recently ive had some issues.Im not sure if this is my ISP but the connection to the router drops out or i lose connection to the internet.I thought the firmware was out of date so i updated to 3.03 from 3.02 and it doesnt seem to fix the problem. what it did was create new problem. now when you edit settings it says >> JAVASCRIPT; true or if i try to edit port forwording it wont save the data i enter. This was all brought to my attention when I tried to connect to my wireless and my SSID was not what i set it as, the router had some way been reset. could something of happened to the router for it to be acting all crazy.

We recently purchased a Linksys E3200 router, because our old router didn't take advantage of our internet speed. The router works fine, though the internet speeds again isn't as much as expected.
Â
With a wired connection, we only get 80 Mbit/s of our full 120 Mbit/s, according to Speedtest.net. The Cisco Connect built-in speed test is even worse; only 40 Mbit/s. When we directly plug the computer into the modem, we get the full 120 Mbit/s, which indicates that the modem does have the connection speed. The router just doesn't give it to the computers attached.
Â
I don't know about my wireless speed, as my wireless card in the laptop clearly is the bottleneck (it can only connect at 65 Mbit/s). Atheros AR9285 ftw.
Â
We tried different cables, the one included with the router gives the same speed.

My 'network' looks like this:
Â
CABLE MODEM ===> WRT54G
WRT54G Port1 ===> PC
Â
PC is running Windows/XP sp3 with all updates installed. It has no wireless adapter.WRT54G model number sticker shows ver.2. I don't think the firmware has ever been upgraded. This used to work. What has changed? The laptop that used to connect wireless is dead. I now have a 2nd PC that sits on the same table as the old PC. It has no wireless adapter at this point, but eventually either it, or the old computer, will be getting its internet connection wireless-ly, as the computers will be physically in separate rooms. I can't see how these changes would affect the operation of the router.

I have a brand new E4200 with two desktop computers using it with no problems. I also have a work Thinkpad laptop that I use a couple of times a week from home. Since day one of installing the new router, I have experienced the blue screen of death numerous times during the day (the number of times varies from 1 to 6 on a really bad day). I believe this is happening when I lose my connection to the router. I can see it trying to reestablish itself but the VPN will drop the connrection before it has a chance. I never lost my VPN connection until the day I installed the new router. Yesterday, at least one time it was unable to reestablish connectivity with the router and I had to reboot the laptop to get it connected. Could this have something to do with the IP address? I do not have any issues with the laptop when I am at work using a docking station.
Â
So, I am wondering why I am constantly losing connectivity on the laptop only. The laptop has Windows XP and I am using AT&T Global Network Client to access the work network. Is there a setting somewhere that will fix this? Our IT folks rebuilt my laptop and I am still experiencing the same problem.  I checked and I have the current version of the firmware for the router.Â

I have an E2500 with the latest firmware upgrade (1.0.03). My configuration is simple, I have a fixed IP from my ISP with fixed DNS servers. I have one computer connected via cable and one connected via wireless and a laptop that gets connected on occasion wirelessly as well. I also have an android phone that I sometimes have the networking turned on and sometimes not. That doesn't seem to be affecting the router either as I've lost connections under both circumstances. The only thing I have different is I clone the MAC address as the ISP has my IP linked to my old Linksys MAC.
Â
The problem is I randomly lose connection to the internet, the home network is still up it's just the internet goes down. I could be on the computer or not, sometimes while browsing sometimes after I browse for a while sometimes before I get started. Fortunately its not happened during one of my online games but it has happened just after I log off the game. It usually happens a couple of times a day.

my E2500 drops the internet connection randomly. I have no issues with wired or wireless access to the home network (sharing files, sharing printers etc...). To fix the problem I log into the router and do a soft reboot from the status page.
Â
I posted this earlier and the only response I received was a cut and paste answer to make some changes to my wireless settings. Seriously doubting the relevance of the post I made the changes anyway and as expected nothing changed, the router still loses access to the internet without any warning. When I replied that I hadn't thought that that was the problem but that I HAD made the changes mentioned and as I expected it DIDN'T work I get no response.

I have a Linksys wrt54g wireless router.I have my modem connected to it through ethernet. All of the lights on my modem are on, except for the standby light which isn't supposed to be on. My router says it has internet and it says wlan is active. But still no internet. I get local only. I went on my setup page for my router. I went to status and its telling me that my ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway are all 0.0.0.0 All 3 dns spots are blank. I did a dhcp release and renew. Still all 0's. I did factory defaults. Still nothing. I did ipconfig /all on my desktop and its listing my dns, my default gateway, my dhcp server, my ipv4 address and my dns suffix.

Router: WRT54G
Network: 802.11g (and I'm using WEP)
Wifi Adapter: Intel R Centrino R Ultimate-n 6300 AGN
No. of devices connected to wireless network: 5
My problem is that whenever 2 devices have joined the wireless network, I will not be able to do so despite placing the laptop or iPhone right next to the router, hence getting excellent signal strength. Or, if I am already connected to the network, I get knocked out repeatedly. I don't think it is a hardware or software issue because I'm still able to connect and get a very stable connection after someone leaves the wireless network. This is getting frustrating and I have tried all ways and means to resolve this but to no avail. Is this about some setting that I can tweak, e.g. to allow more users onto the network? But this has already been configured to '50'!

I am replacing a WRH54G with a WRT54G. Â First I unplugged everything and waited 5 minutes. Then I plugged my ethernet cord from the DSL modem into the WRT54G. Then I plugged in the DSL modem. I waited for the lights to stop blinking. Then I plugged in the WRT54G and waited for LEDs to show connection. Then I plugged the ethernet cord from the WRT54G to the computer. Then I turned on the computer. I was able to access the Interface for the WRT54G but I was not able to connect to the internet. I tried power cycling multiple times both the DSL modem and the WRT54G. I was unable to access the internet. Finally I plugged the WRH54G back in and everything worked fine. why the old WRH54G can connect to the internet and the WRT54G cannot?

My router used to work. I updated the firmware to 4.21. xx and after that I can't connect to internet. When I connect directly to modem, I can go to the internet . I power recycled etc but when I connect to the router, it says limited connectivity. It shows autoconfigurtion ip:169.254.251.135. I don't know why this is so.I don't have the setup cd disk but I read the users' guide and it seems that I really don;t need the cd. But no matter what I do , I can't get to 192.168.1.1 .

I just switched from DSL to Cable and now i can't get internet to the Linksys router. I can connect to it from a wireless laptop but just not get on the internet I've read other posts about doing the "clone mac" address and doing the power cycle but still cannot get the Linksys to respond. I enabled the WRT54G to clone the mac address and have spent about 10 hours in two days trying to get this to work and looking online, etc....

wrt54g wireless router so we could get Netflix through our Wii. I have a one year old Compaq and am running Windows 7 with a wireless Internet connection through my service provider. I installed the router with no problems and was able to get online with the Wii. However, I am no longer able to get Internet access on my desktop. It shows that my Internet is connected, but it shows "No Network Access". I had gotten on fine at first, then I went to the 192.168.1.1 site to configure my data. I changed my time zone and then went to secure my connection. I cannot remember the exact option I chose, but I think it was something like WAP2 Personal. As soon as I selected that the screen froze and I can no longer access that site or get online through the router.

Or the security settings to factory default?I didn't save after realising that I had done wasn't going to change my password. Now I can't access the internet. I have tried everything, resetting, restarting, waiting, banging my head aqgainst the wall.I have another router, an E1000. This will not connect either. internet works fine when hardwired to the modem.

I have a WRT54G wireless router and it goes through periods where it constantly has to be reset cause it keeps dropping the internet connection. Once you do a power cycle it starts working right again. But sometimes goes out 5mins later.I have the router hooked up to a Windows XP computer via an ethernet cable...and I have 1 Windows Vista laptop, 2 Android phones and a PS3 connected via wireless. The PS3 is set up following these directions: (not sure if this is what's screwing it up)
Â
"Step 1:Open a web browsersuch as Internet Explorer.
Step 2:Go to the Address bar and enter your router's IP address ("192.168.1.1" is the default IP of most Linksys routers) then press [Enter].
Step 3:When the router's web-based setup page appears, click Applications& Gaming then click DMZ.
Step 4:Select Enable on DMZ and under DMZ Host IP Address enter the PlayStation®3's IP address.
- Try 192.168.1.10 or 192.168.1.20 Save Settings.
- This IP address will need to typed in manually during online setup on ps3. I think its the first address you enter (I think this is the game's IP address).
- Use 192.168.1.1 for the wireless router's IP address on your PS3.
Step 5:Now, click Administration and Disable UPnP. Make sure you also disable UPnP on your ps3 online setup. Save Settings.
Step 6:Click Status. Write down the DNS 1: dns number and DNS 2: dns number on a piece of paper. You will enter these for DNS 1 and DNS 2 numbers during online ps3 setup. NOTE: The IP address listed on the Status page for your wireless router is not used for any setup on your ps3. Remember, to get into ps3 online setup, you have to choose Manual during setup so you can enter these numbers.
Step 7:The WP key crap and whatever during online setup should be skipped unless you specifically setup some kind of password for your wireless router when you installed it. I didn't and just left that part blank and skipped over it.That should get your wireless router and game setup. If you're still stuck, drop me a message. And, remember to do this setup after that:Linksys has a great tech support at their site. url...
I have a ps3 and did all of the wireless and ps3 online setup for it using their site technical support. Doing that seemed to throw a monkey wrench into my internet connection a while after that. I just left all of my game settings in place and did this: Logon on to your wireless router. To do this, you will probably go to url.. by typing this address into your address box on your internet explorer. Logon. If you don't know how to logon, go to and follow the instructions in technical support.

I just got a Linksys router from a moving neighbor. Â The router is a Linksys WRT54G v5. She didn't have the power adaptor, so I found one that is 12VDC 500mA and it works. Â The factory resetted the device. Â I always get a signal, but it has that little error sign on it. Â It says my internet connection is broken. Â I believe this is caused by a bad ethernet port, but I have gotten into the internet sometimes. I have another router but it doesn't work either. On the other router I get a signal that as no error sign and says "Internet Access" but I still cannot access the internet. Â My laptop's network card works.

I have a problem with my new Galaxy S2 and getting Internet connection trough my Linksys-router. I can connect to the router and my S2 shows and says my WIFI-connection is OK. But still I can't get any Internet-traffic to my S2.The wireless router is working OK for my old IPhone and MacBook Pro, but not for my S2. I have tried the S2 on other wireless access points, and it is working fine.I have tried a lot of different wireless settings, but nothing seems to fix the problem. From my S2 I can ping the IP-addresses of the router, all DNS, gateway and IP-address of the router. I can also ping the phones IP-address from my router. But I can't ping anything "outside" the router. Here are some data:
Router: WRT54G
Hardware-version: 2.2
Firmware Version: v4.21.4

I have a WRT54G router and a Dell computer. I have been connecting wirelessly to this router with this computer for about 3 years. Now, the computer sees the router but it won't connect to the internet. I have other computers that connect fine, so I thought it was the wireless adapter in my computer. However, I went to someone else's house and connected perfectly.

I've been having issues with my e2500 router. I've found my connection dropping occasionally both with a wired connection and wirelessly on other computer. My desktop is connected directly to the router via ethernet and I've been keeping an eye on my network preference pane. Every 10 minutes or so the connection will be lost and computer says the cable is unplugged. It then resolves after 2 minutes.Â
Â
I'm running OSX 10.8, firmware 1.0.07. Done a factory reset, power cycles etc. Configured with Cisco connect and manually multiple times. I've swapped out ethernet cables just to be sure it wasn't a cable issue.Â
Â
Internet is fine when I've got the computer hooked up directly to the modem. No connection issues.

Pandora suddenly no longer works on it and neither does ESPN, it just times out. Very, very slow. I am very disappointed. I am using it with my Verizona westell DSL modem ... Why this is happening or if maybe this router is defective.

I wired it all up correctly, and Continue to get "error 322: check router" upon every attempted install. I did some research and tried releasing and renewing IP amongst restarting all networking devices AND PC's. Peculiar enough, I could connect AND get online wirelessly from a netbook, but neither of my 2 PC's could connect via a wire. I got a defective router, is it possible the ports are malfunctioning? because the lights are on, but 3 or all of the 4 lights are continually on when only 2 ports are plugged in
