Misleading Netgear Wireless Router (DGN3500) Speed Claims?

Jul 22, 2011

So for a while now, I have had the Netgear router (DGN3500). Because the link speed (not the actual speed) was 270Mbps instead of their stated "up to 300Mbps", I had a go at the manufacturer. Phone calls with them just gave me useless troubleshooting tips that had nothing to do with solving it, and I just gave up and finished the call. I took it up with the manufacturer by email and through the retailer (who discussed it with the manufacturer), but no one was willing to accept that the device had misleading claims. I could have chosen a modem and wireless router combo, but opted to wait for the DGND3700 to be in stock up till this week.

Netgear DGN3500 Router Loses Internet Connection?

Aug 4, 2011

I live out in the country at the end of a very long copper cable and my internet connection is never great at the best of times. Also live in an old house with thick walls so the family are always complaining about the poor wireless connection. So I bought a new router, netgear DGN3500, which on the whole seemed pretty good out of the box, but now it is randomly dropping the internet connection. Sometimes this is solved by rebooting the router, but just now this didn't do it and only turning it off completely for 30" and turning it back on again gave me back my connection (DownStream Connection Speed 3680 kbps, UpStream Connection Speed 416 kbps - which is as good as it gets on the end of my phone line).

Setup 3600HGV As Modem Only / Have Netgear DGN3500 As Wireless Access Point

Apr 19, 2011

I'm trying to find out if it's possible to setup a 3600HGV (VDSL Gateway) as modem only and have a Netgear DGN3500 (ADSL2+) as a wireless access point. I'm aware that both are DSL modems, my reasoning for wanting to have them both hooked up is that

a) the 3600HGV has no Gigabit switch and runs on wireless G

b) the DGN 3500 has a Gigabit switch and does wireless N. So in a nutshell I want the 3600 as simple modem and the 3500 as a wireless N access point with Gigabit switch.

Netgear WGR614v5 Does Router Also Control Internet Speed

NAS Storage Slow Network Speed - Netgear WNDR3700 Router

Jul 12, 2011

i set-up the D-LINK DNS 323 NAS unit with RAID 1 (dual 2-terabyte 5400 rpm drives)

it works, but it is slow in copying files between my computer and it (8 minutes to copy 7.94 gig file between NAS and my PC via wire).

i am using netgear WNDR3700 gigabit router. replaced the network wires to the latest spec, and my computer has realtek PCIe GBE network adapter.

this is looking more and more like the NAS RAID 1 is the bottleneck.. possibly 7200 RPM drives would have kicked more ass?

Netgear Wireless Speed Very Low In One Room Only

Sep 20, 2011

I have a netgear wireless modem router in an upstairs bedroom/study. My problem is that I can connect my son's windows 7 laptop wirelessly in any of the upstairs rooms with a good download speed (around 8mbps) except for his bedroom in which the download speed suddenly drops to 400-600kbps. I can sit on the landing connecting at 8mbps, then move into his doorway and it drops to around 3mbps and then a couple of feet further into the room and it's only 500kbps.

I've tried turning off all other electrical appliances in his room but it makes no difference. Obviously something is affecting the download speed dramatically but I'm at a loss as to what it can be. The signal strength seems fine.

Netgear 600 Dual Band Router Connected To A DOCIS 3.0 Cable Modem - Downloading Speed Is Slow?

Mar 25, 2011

I have a Netgear 600 dual band router connected to a DOCIS 3.0 cable modem with a 25mps internet connection from my ISP, should be fast right? When I run a speed test on my comp I get 10-13 mbps download on average. Here's the issue, upon visiting my mothers house and running the same speed test I got very similar results. She is running a Lynksys G router on a DOCIS 2.0 cable modem with 12mps connection. My question is, how can this be so, am I at the limits of my comps g network card? as a disclaimer I would like to note I am connected to the G band on both routers.

Linksys Wireless Router :: Wrt54gs Wifi Download Speed 1/3 Of Wired Speed

Dec 28, 2010

I just discovered that my wireless download speeds are 5Mbps, compared to 16Mbps if my laptop is connected directly to the modem or wired through the router.  Uploads are 2Mbps either way.  I have a WRT54GS v.6 with firmware version v1.52.8 which I updated today, completed by setting factory default through the router webpage after I discovered this discrepancy.  The firmware update did not improve the download speed appreciably, if at all.Should the wireless connection be that much slower than the wired connection through the router?  If not, what sort of issues could I be having to account for this?

I did just replace my modem when I discovered I was having erratic speedtests and that corrected that problem.  That is when I became aware of the wireless issue, so not sure how long that has been the case.  I have Charter's 16/2 HSI, living in a sparsely populated area with solid internet service.  There is no external nor internal interference on this 2.4Ghz band.

Netgear DG834PN - How To Increase Internet Speed

Feb 9, 2011

I run vista home premium through a Netgear DG834PN and use an iPad for surfing, emails etc wirelessly.I live in a 3 bed detached house and the router is running in the office upstairs probably 4 metres away max.The house is substantial being ex MOD.My Internet connection is not the best and at max I get around 1.4meg and often far less so I need to maximise my equipment. My speed dropped to less than 0.5meg this morning and it increased again after changing router channels from 11 to 1 but as my speeds fluctuate this could have been coincidental. although the speeds were very low for around 2 weeks running at less than 0.5meg it increased just prior to referral to Openreach so apparently BT would not accept as fault due to line being within parameters. Finally I was using a router supplied by them direct into the master socket and this was no better than my own, so are there any better routers I could purchase to maximise my speed and wireless connection?

Netgear WD3700 And WD4500 / Wi-Fi Transfer Speed Really Low?

Aug 13, 2012

I have been performing the same test with 3 different Wi-Fi routers (ASUS RT-N 16, Netgear WD3700 and Netgear WD4500): Turn on the router and plugin external HDD. Connect to the router from one of two different laptops (both using 802.11n), while placing the laptop inches from the router.Copy a big file from the laptop to the external HDD over Wi-Fi. No matter what router, laptop or frequency (2.4 or 5.0) I used, my file transfer speed never went above 6.0MBps (with Netgear WD4500) or 3.5MBps (with any other router). Why is it so much lower than theoretical maximum?

Few things that I have already ruled out:One of the laptops is brand new ASUS UX31a running Windows 7, another one is an older Toshiba with Windows XP. Transfer speed is almost identical on both of them, so it should not be an issue with the laptop.

When HDD is connected directly to the laptop via USB, the transfer speed hovers around 20MBps, so HDD can't be limiting factor either. While doing the test, no other computers were connected to that Wi-Fi network. All routers were brand new, running stock firmware. InSSIDer shows that there is just one another router in vicinity, running only at 2.4 frequency and at different channel than my router.

Netgear WNR 2000 / 1000 - Download Speed

Apr 10, 2011

According to the Time Warner website, my Road Runner Turbo with Power boost is capable of download speeds up to 15 Mbps, which seems to be far surpassed by all wireless routers. So what are the benefits of routers such as the Netgear WNR2000 and beyond with speeds up to 300 Mbps vs the Netgear WNR1000 with speeds up to 150 Mbps?

I'm more than willing to spend more for increased performance, but don't fully understand what benefits I'll see by dropping more than about $40 on something like the WNR1000.By the way, I'm in a two bedroom apartment and regularly have two laptops, a PS3, and Droid X connected to the internet.

Netgear WPN824 Mbps Download Speed Is Very Slow?

Sep 11, 2012

I've been experiencing some problems with my RangeMax wireless NETGEAR router (model WPN824) in terms of wireless connectivity. When directly plugged into my router (i.e. using ethernet cables), the download and upload speed (in mbps - megabytes per second) appear to be working correctly, where we register average download speeds of 15-19 mbps, and 1.99 to 2.07 mbps for upload speeds, as shown on speedtest.net. However, our wireless devices (i.e. laptops and Nintendo Wii) are not picking up the same download speeds, but the upload speed is fine. The problem is that the download speeds of the wireless devices are comparatively low, where speeds of 2.5 to 5.5 mbps are a commonality.

We've tried resetting the router (pushing that small button at the back of the router, using a pin) and have a new 10-character key password. We've also tried simply unlugging the power cable to the router, with disconnecting lengths of about 10 seconds to over a minute for separate attempts. It is also worth noting that the router occasionally disconnects and re-connects on irregular intervals, and we have many wireless devices attached to the router (though many of these are not in use and are very often disconnected from the internet, so I do not think the router is being overwhelmed).

I am currently paying for 30 mbps downloading speed and 2 mbps with respect to uploading, though the 30 mbps downloading speed will likely only be registered if directly connected to the black box (modem). As such, values of 10 to 18 mbps for downloading speed for a wireless device would be considered "normal". Why would our wireless devices not pick the correct mbps download speed? Is it possible that there is a setting on the NETGEAR SMARTWIZARD page (192.168.1.1) that is preventing this?

Here, though, it seems just unbearable: My pc loses signal quite often and even when it's constant, sometimes it just goes too slow to actually do anything: even simply loading a page takes a couple minutes! It goes slowly most of the times, although once in a while it decides to do perfectly fine.

Recently my desktop has experienced very slow download speeds (~0.11 Mbps), however the upload speed appears to be in line (~2.0Mbps). These numbers are taken from Comcast's speed test (my ISP). It is obviously a problem with my PC because everything else on the network (PS3, Laptop) have great signals with no problems. I just recently reverted the Desktop back to its factory state, and everything was working fine for a couple of months. The desktop in question uses Vista 32-bit and the Belkin Basic USB Wireless Adapter.
