Me and my family have a PC that runs on Windows Vista service pack one. We have it hooked up to the Internet (Verizon DSL). And knock on well it has a great connection and has never given us any problems. We run a LAN line on this connection. No wireless at all. Yes we are still in the stone age. Well the other day my mother gave my step daughter her laptop ( Dell Latitude D610, it has Windows XP service pack two on it). They had it set up for wireless. So, I disabled that connection and went to the LAN connection that was set up and enabled it. Everything was set to obtain a address. I hooked up a Ethernet cable that went from the DSL straight to the laptop. No connection at all, not even a local one.So then I read the other day that you could type in the IP, Subnet and Gateway address from the working PC into the laptop and things should work. Well, I did this. Yes, I did get a local connection but still nothing on the Internet side. Then I thought, hmm maybe it needs to be done threw a router. I had a NETGEAR (Fast Ethernet Switch) FS 108 so I hooked everything up to that.
My PC connection works great. Very fast. However the laptop still, no luck. I left the IP, Subnet and Gateway address the same on the laptop. At first I got a error message saying that there was two machines on the same network using the same IP address(or something to that effect). So, I went back to the lap top and clicked to obtain a address. And got no connection at all. No local or internet. On the laptop I have released and renewed using the various Ipconfig commands. I have pinged the new address and it was a success. That address is 169.254.181.107. I Pinged the Subnet and it too cam back a success. I tried pinging a web page and no luck at all. I also have power cycled everything. And still the same result. Oh and when I did the Ipconfig /renew to get the address above it never did give me a default gateway. It came up blank. The laptop did have Norton Internet protection on it so disabled it. Or at lest I think I did. I right clicked on it and disabled it. So, I think I did it right. I also disabled the windows firewall and still no luck. The PC connections work great and it's hooked up threw the router as well. Just having trouble with the laptop.I would run the Ipconfig /all cmd on the laptop, but as I said I cant hook it up to the computer nor do I have any recordable CD's or a usb drive.
I just got a new HP EliteBook 8560w(Win7) but when I connect an Ethernet cable, the wireless becomes disabled. With my older Dell machines(WinXP) I could use both [DHCP for wireless and 192.168.1.x on the copper/Ethernet].Is there a way to prevent the wireless from being disabled?
My computer can no longer connect to the internet. As I do not use an Ethernet cable, my concern is the wireless aspect. I am running Windows 7 on an HP laptop, and when I troubleshoot the problem all it pops up with is "Local Area Connection 4 adapter is disabled". When I try repairs as an administrator it just repeats the fact that the adapter is disabled, but does not provide a way for me to fix this. I have also tried going through Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Troubleshooting > Network and Internet and selecting the network adapter option, selecting the Local Area Connection 4 to diagnose. It then said troubleshooting couldn't identify a problem.
so I have an Acer laptop, and it won't connect to the internet. Whenever I try it says Local Only and won't let me access anything on the web. This happened a few months ago, and I had recently switched to a new router. I know this question has been asked before, but I've tried all the non-specific solutions, and non of them worked.
Also it won't even connect when I use a non-wireless, ie cable, connection.
I upgraded my old Linksys wrt54g to the E1500. All the XP os are connected via cable and wireless connection, but the Vista laptop i get local access only connection error. This laptop used to connect on the older router using wep but with E1500 wpa-2 it cannot connect. I am unable to ping the router from the laptop wireless. Connecting ethernet cable it works fine and logging in as a guest works does too.
i have factory reset my Toshiba laptop un clicked ipv6 but a setting in vista only gives me local or limited connectivity and im unable to access the internet and my other Toshiba laptop allows me full access along with my phone allows full access to the wireless network therefore tells me the router is not the cause?
I have several devices connected to a homehub at my home. These include smart phones, desktop computer xbox 360 and a laptop. All work fine except the laptop which until the other day (when I uninstalled Norton Security off it) has been unable to connect to the internet. The laptop has Windows Vista SP 2. I searched the forums already for any details of how to rectify this and have seen mentioned the commands netsh int ip reset reset.log (along with Ipv4 and ipv6) and netsh winsock reset catalog? went to add/remove programmes to get rid of Norton and have sinced tried to use the Norton removal tool which every time I copy it across to the laptop from my desktop when I try to run it it says it is corrupt.I was then referred to a uninstall tool called Revo which I used to remove any symantec or Norton it could find.I have also turned off windows firewall and Im still not finding a resolution.

I got 3 laptops in household, my daughters and sons connect fine wireless but when i want to connect my laptop finds talk talk my internet provider but it says local connection only, Find this a bit strange when the other two laptops are fine.
problem is that my internet traffic slows down to a stop after 5 minutes or so of activity. It is not a complete stop, sometimes I may get a tiny burst of traffic after 2 minutes or more of inactivity. I am connected via an ADSL wireless routerOther computers on the (windows workgroup) network do NOT have this problem. I am able to communicate normally with other local network computers. I am using Windows XP SP3, there are also Windows 7 computers on the local network[CODE]
I have to connect through VPN for work so that I can RDP into my remote development machine, but their internet speed is painfully slow. Is there any way I can route my general internet browsing traffic through my local connection, while still maintaining the VPN connection to my remote box?
We've had no problems with our Internet before but yesterday I could only get local access connection. Neither my iPhone, laptop or home computer cud get any further than local connection on wireless.I'v tried the classic turnin it off and on (the router) and I'v tried connection with a cable but still gettin the same connection level! The router is a netgear if that means anything!
I am now using my dell optiplex 755, with windows xp sp3. The first set up was with wireless ,which works fine, but now I am trying to use the ethernet to netgear switch, to comcast modem, from dell desktop, I get error that says,TCP/IP is not enabled for thisconnection. Can not proceed. I usually acess internet on Wi-Fi, and now I have travelled, and got my laptop with me. The internet here is Local Are Connection, the one with the cable, and it says I am connected, 100 Mbps, but no internet access! I can't browse or open anything that has to do with the internet... However, It works perfectly fine on EVERY other laptop. I've searched a lot of places and I've been told to write commands like ipconfig/ all andd netsh int ip reset.log but when I do that I get "The following command was not found : int ip reset.log" I set the properties in TCP/IP to Automatically detect settings .. but nothing.
How do I connect to internet using Local Area connection? I only access internet via wireless connection. With Local Area connection, IPv4 and IPv6 do not have internet access[CODE]
How I can stop a local internet connection from using my computer, or the router? I am using high speed through frontier. I have deleted this local internet connection once before. When they or it connects to my stuff, I cannot get online. It says, Unnamed Network - Unsecured Network.Radio type 802.11g with excellent strength.
I have been having some issues with Windows Audio needing to be restarted every time I log on. Also my theme has changed unexpectedly. I also noticed that Wndows firewall isn't started and it won't let me start it it gives me this...Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICX) on local computer. Error 3 access is denied.
I have some issue with internet connection and Router WRT54G. There is always "Local Connection" but no internet access. I checked that at two different laptops. One with Windows Vista and the other one with Windows XP. Both the same problem. There is a wireless connection with excellent signal strength but no internet access. I added a screen shut to see the Router setting. If more needed I will add more.
The wireless network never picks up any signals and when I try to plug in to the modem it doesn't recognize the internet either. Is this a driver issue or what?
I have a very annoying problem with my Linksys WRT54G2.When I connect a wireless device (laptop, phone, TV, Ipad) to my wireless network I only see a Local connection, no connection to internet. After resetting the router (power off for several seconds) the internet-connection is available again.I have to do this every 1 - 2 days.
I am having the exact same problem as above however when i do netsh int ipv6 reset reset.logI get the fallowing message : there's no user specified setting to be reset.can't get an internet connection on the actual laptop. my wireless card works but it always says limited access to any wireless network i try.
I connected my home laptop to the work network to download some (legal) software (by cable) but it didn't work. When I detached it the internet access to the desktop machine was not functioning. That was diagnosed as a problem with the I.P. address (presumably when i attached my laptop.) It was fixed over the phone through a START>RUN>CMd>config process. Now I find that my laptop won't connect to my NetGear home link (also cable) and wonder if the same problem might be happening, that connecting the laptop to the work network has scrambled it's recognition of the server or the I.P. address.I tried updating Kaspersky 2011 databases but it just keeps saying 'source not found'Another laptop using the same router connects perfectly each time.
Due to the untimely demise of my old wireless adsl router (after an altercation with a destructive toddler), I've bought a new one.Connected it via cable to my laptop, & have set it all up through the wizard. When I'm connected via cable, I can access the internet perfectly well. However, if I try to connect using wireless, it can see the wireless router, asks for password, tells me I'm connected to the router - but it tells me that I'm in a local network only (can't find the internet). I've connected another laptop and a few smartphones to wireless, and they all work without any problem at all.I've done the usual take it all apart & start again, but it still comes back to the same problem. The only thing I wondered was that the new router is Wireless N, whereas the old laptop is a b/g - but we've got an older HTC smartphone that's only b/g and that doesn't have any problems.

But I have been having major issues with internet speed. I browsed through the forums and, as a result, updated my LAN driver with the latest driver for the Intel LAN Driver V17.3.0.0
I have the virgin media super hub with up to 60mbps download but rarely get over 20 and even then the download of webpages seems glitchy... on evenings it is terrible with 0.5 to 1.5mbps being the norm. The problem is also affecting Chrome which struggles to render maps and stream videos such as 720p videos on youtube even when I have a tested connection of 30ish. I usually resort to using Explorer, reducing videos to 360p or even 240p.I've reinstalled Chrome a few times but still no change.
What is going on??I also have an old Dell Inspiron laptop which works brilliantly with the fast internet - where the speed of the hardware is the only limiting factor.
I have a Vaio laptop that shows full bars connection to my Belkin_Enhanced_E98E8F modem but when I try to connect them it tells me "the wireless security key is not correct". Well, i know for a fact it IS correct.
i have a local cable internet connection(no modem,no router) which i plug in the back of my cpu and its all seT.now,it is for my desktop but when i insert that cable in my laptop.,it says username and password incorrect.i called up my ISP and he said i can use my internet only on my desktop and not on any other computer.is there a way out of it? can i use that internet on my laptop somehow? i dont wanna use the internet on both(laptop and desktop)so im not asking for something complicated.
New laptop, connected to my home network which is very stable and has no history of connection issues. After about 10 seconds the laptop drops the connection. Sometimes it'll come back for a while sometimes not, haven't observed any pattern in this yet, All I've done since starting the computer for the first time is installed all the junk that comes with it (Nero stuff mostly) and installed all windows updates (there were over 60 of them) and AVG Free edition. Before doing all that the connection was still not right but it did hold for a lot longer than 10 seconds. It held for over an hour downloading programs like Itunes, AVG and Firefox, Going to control panel > network sharing centre when the connection is down I see the yellow exclamation mark between my computer and my network. Troubleshooting this resets the network adapter, gives me the error 'The default gateway is not available' and says that it is fixed. The connection then works again for about 10 seconds and drops once more.
I have a Acer 5552 laptop and today it just stopped getting internet connection. I tried resetting the router and the computer neither worked. I also have a desktop and another laptop in my house and both of them are working and connecting fine. I am not sure what is going on. It finds the connection and says it is connected but then nothing will come up.
