View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there any difference between a switch and a router with DHCP turned off?I'm trying to connect a Mac and a PC (wired) to my Linksys E4200 but I don't have any ports left. I connected my Netgear WPN824 to my Linksys and turned DHCP off on the Netgear but I'm running into all sorts of problems:
- Mac/PC works for a few hours then looses network connectivity
- Mac/PC won't connect at all
- Mac will connect but I can't access my media server (PS3 Media Server) from my PS3 (which is wired directly to the Cisco)
I'm considering just giving up and buying a cheap network switch but was wondering if this will make any difference or will it just be a waste of money? With DHCP turned off, is the Netgear behaving exactly as a switch would anyway?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop here that I can't seem to turn wireless off on via the switch. While the obvious choice is hardware failure, it's nearly a brand new Dell Precision M6600 and I hesitate to jump to conclusions.
The physical switch on the system will not toggle wifi on or off; it is always on. I can disable it via Windows (Win 7 Pro), or simply disconnect from the network, but when I do it does not remember the wifi passwords, which may be a separate issue.
What are the pros and cons of configuring a Switch Virtual Interface (SVI) versus a routed physical port between layer 3 switches? For example, if I have two 4506s and have a need to run HSRP and route between them which feature is better and why?

View 6 Replies View RelatedToday I woke up and wanted to connect to the internet via my laptop. The current network I have is the DSL modem connected to a WR841ND TP-LINK router, and then connected via LAN port to my desktop PC, and via Wi-Fi to a Laptop. However, my connection was unsuccesful. I power cycled both the modem and the router, awaited for a stable connection, and tried again with no result. That's when I noticed the lights on my router seemed strange. While the router's LAN port 1 to the computer was connected and lit, the LAN port 4 was also lit, but it wasn't connected to anything. Then I noticed my wan port showed the same behaviour, since it was already unplugged, but its light was still on.
That's when I decided to do a factory defaults reset, a hard reset, and reuploaded the firmware to the router. No change at all.I decided to connect my DSL modem to the computer directly, and internet works like a charm, so everything points to the router as the source of the problem. Now, I wanted to know. What would be the procedures I should follow to test or repair the router before declaring it "deceased"? Could this be more of a firmware problem? A hardware one?
I have a pair of router Cisco 2800 running in HSRP, now I want to configure one sub interface with another sub net, Will my current IP on physical interface work or do I need to create two Sub interfaces for each network. Do i must need encapsulation on sub interface

I've been using a WRT120N on a local area connection. The WRT120N acts as a gateway and also to connect to the PPOE connection, via a bridged adsl modem.I've noticed that the LAN port 1 was flashing although the network cable was disconnected from the physical port. I've restarted a few times but to no avail as well. Ever since that, I've noticed that connection through cable are unstable and hard. Now, I'm not able to reset or upgrade the router's firmware. Is there any other way to be done so that I can get this router working as normal again.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am considering to purchase a Linksys Wireless router, but I just don't know which one to select. There are so many different types that seem to have very similar (if not equal) specs. If I just limit myself to the WRT120N, the WRT160N and the E1000, they all have 4 ethernet ports (10/100), and they all support 802.11 b/g/n for the wireless part.Obviously they all promise a blazing performance, and wireless coverage throughout the whole house, without (many) blind spots. But if their specs are the same, why are they different types?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've owned the Rev A DIR-655 for years and have loved it, but recently it started acting up. I have a complicated setup saved as a gateway settings file (.gws). I decided to purchase a new DIR-655 for the ease of importing my settings without having to manually setup again, however, much to my dismay, the new file format for the configuration settings on the Rev B is not .gws but rather .bin. The .gws file will not import. I tried changing the file extension to .bin with hopes it might import but no luck. I also found the utility which decrypts the .gws file into .xml and used those values to manually re-enter the settings into the Rev B router, but my port forwarding is not working the same. I was wondering if there is any utility to convert the .gws file to the .bin file in order to import into the Rev B router, or if not, can I still purchase the Rev A model somewhere. The online shops I've checked do not list the hardware version.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm consider either the EA4500 or the EA6500.I've got a desktop computer and a Kindle Fire HD, my son has a school laptop that he uses during the school year. At this time we don't have any HD TVs or smartphones but that may change in the future. Also something to add, not sure if it would make a difference or not but we've got Wildblue/Dish Network Satellite Internet.I'd rather only have to buy one router that will last me for several years.
View 5 Replies View Related I recently joined an ISP support desk and increasingly often come across LAN configuration with a separate "modem" (DSL cable mobem or Fibre/Satellite/Fixed Wireless box - will call all these toys "modems" from now on). I have a bit of an issue understanding the difference between Internet and LAN ports of Lynksis routers (there are other brands too but as the most advanced on the market, Linksys has been given me the hardest time so far).
Let's take WRT-120N as it is one of the most popular Linksys models out there. Basically, I am coming to a conclusion that the 4 LAN ports act like switch ports and cannot have different IP addresses (so as a single WRT-120 device could be a gateway for up to 4 different networks) and Internet port is the one that is getting an address different from LAN port address (gets it from "modem"). If my understanding is right, "modem" must be hooked up only to WAN port to work and if we connect it to one of the 4 LAN ports we cannot access Internet. But is my understanding right or wrong??Also, can these routers have one default gateway address for Ethernet connection and a different one for WiFi?Are there any other differences between Internet and LAN ports? If you get to decide what port to connect the "modem" to does it matter what is the "modem's" physical implementation? (DSL modem, Sat box, etc)I possess X3000 home gateway myself and have a similar question about it's Cable and LAN ports which I will post in "Cable and DSL" forum.
