Linksys Wireless Router :: Difference Between WRT120N And WRT160N
Jul 29, 2011I am considering to purchase a Linksys Wireless router, but I just don't know which one to select.There are so many different types that seem to have very similar (if not equal) specs.If I just limit myself to the WRT120N, the WRT160N and the E1000, they all have 4 ethernet ports (10/100), and they all support 802.11 b/g/n for the wireless part.Obviously they all promise a blazing performance, and wireless coverage throughout the whole house, without (many) blind spots.But if their specs are the same, why are they different types?

Apr 3, 2013 I recently joined an ISP support desk and increasingly often come across LAN configuration with a separate "modem" (DSL cable mobem or Fibre/Satellite/Fixed Wireless box - will call all these toys "modems" from now on). I have a bit of an issue understanding the difference between Internet and LAN ports of Lynksis routers (there are other brands too but as the most advanced on the market, Linksys has been given me the hardest time so far).
Let's take WRT-120N as it is one of the most popular Linksys models out there. Basically, I am coming to a conclusion that the 4 LAN ports act like switch ports and cannot have different IP addresses (so as a single WRT-120 device could be a gateway for up to 4 different networks) and Internet port is the one that is getting an address different from LAN port address (gets it from "modem"). If my understanding is right, "modem" must be hooked up only to WAN port to work and if we connect it to one of the 4 LAN ports we cannot access Internet. But is my understanding right or wrong??Also, can these routers have one default gateway address for Ethernet connection and a different one for WiFi?Are there any other differences between Internet and LAN ports?If you get to decide what port to connect the "modem" to does it matter what is the "modem's" physical implementation? (DSL modem, Sat box, etc)I possess X3000 home gateway myself and have a similar question about it's Cable and LAN ports which I will post in "Cable and DSL" forum.

Is it possible?If not, how would i change ethernet interface speed setting so that it can support 100 mbps of speed. Because when i connect through LAN i'm always getting a full dulplex 10 mbps LAN connection automatically.

But I cannot connect with lan port(checked with all the ports).. Even its not pinging...My system firewall is turned OFF... I am using a straight Cable.. I Updated the firmware.. but same result.. Aug 15, 2011I've just attempted to uprade the firmware on my WAG325N from 1.0.6 to 1.0.12 the latest, over wireless. It will not work with Ethernet. It started to upgrade and failed with a garbled screen in my browser. No message to reset. Tried a complete reset several times. Pressing reset, power off for 30 secs. When I attempt to connect wirelessly with browser, just get a garbled screen, with no menus.

I have a D-link wireless-N USB adapter whos MAC address starts with 1C:xx:xx:etc. Unfortunately the QOS GUI does not allow me to enter a MAC address that starts with anything but a zero (0). This is a javascript verification so I guess it would be fairly simple to modify this. Is it possible to have the firmware updated so these MAC addresses are accepted?

Oct 12, 2011I'm using the Linksys Wag325N which always served me well. I've always been able to get my VPN to my workplace going. Until now. I've edited a hostfile on my mac (etc/ppp/ip-up) to get a route setup to be able to use internet and the vpn at the same time. But now the vpn would work no more. Why do i think that it is a router problem? Because other computers in my home network aren't able to establish the vpn they used to work with for a long time.
1. is it possible that my /etc/ppp/ip-up on my computer messes up the router?
2. Is there a way to completely reset my router? Tried "restore to factory settings" which did not work. Is there a "harder" reset?

Sep 5, 2010I'm using an Static IP adress and i'm using wrt120n router, but to connect the internet i have plugged the internet cable in the 1,2,3,4 (doesn't matter which one) slot. So now i'm just using the wirelss part of the router without "routering" if i can say so. When i put the internet cable in the Internet slot of the router, the laptop just cant connect to internet - it shows Unidentified network without Internet Access. I don't know what type of changes i have to make in the WEB interface of the router. I think i have to set the type of the connection - now is DHCP and may be to put my IP adress, DNS, Subnet mask in the router settings, but don't know how exactly. I've tried to set up the router with the CD-interface but same thing happened - Unidentified network when the cable is plugged in the Internet (yellow) port. How to set up the router to be a router, not just a wireless switch?

Jan 18, 2010My roommate and I recently got a WRT120N to replace an older Linksys router that was exhibiting the same problems with less frequency. Indeed, the entire reason we got the new router was to fix these problems. Alas, they have become worse.Anyways, what's happening is that the router constantly resets itself. It does this every 20 minutes to an hour and doesn't seem to be related to how much traffic it's dealing with.It's not just the internet going down, it's the entire network, and not even just the wireless part. My computer has a wired connection to the router and, and I get told "A network cable has been unplugged" every time it happens. Then, if I look down at the router, I see no flashing lights, just the steady glow of the power light. It always fixes itself after 10-15 seconds, but it's very annoying. Certainly, playing games online or having a conversation on Skype is made more difficult.As previously mentioned, we replaced our older router because it was exhibiting the same behavior, but the new one does it with greater frequency. At the very least, the router does reset itself instead of needing us to cycle the power. The setup was slightly different with the old router: I was using a wireless connection with a WMP54Gv4 which I've had to disable since it bluescreens the moment it so much as sniffs a signal from the WRT120N?

On the one PC, it keeps losing network connection. I've tried upgrading the router's firmware, reset, etc. to no avail.
I think it may be related to the same IP address being assigned to multiple machines connected to the router. Is there a way to set specific IP addresses to each item connected to the router to see?

Dec 1, 2011I'm having an issue where essentially my only course of action is to unplug the router and plug it back in. I can connect my laptop (Dell Inspiron N4010) and my phone (HTC Inspire) once. But then if I put my computer to sleep, or I take my phone out of the wireless range and come back, I cannot connect again. I've gone through and played with the settings (changing the upnp, the beacon intervals, the channel, etc) but to no avail. Invariably, I always have to come back to unplugging and plugging back in.
Also have a Kobo E-Reader and a wireless Canon printer. The whole point of a wireless printer was so that it would stay connected and I can print from my laptop. This router is making this useless.
