To Reduce The Amount OF Data Being Pushed Down
Mar 8, 2011
I am really not sure how to ask this question, but I will do my best. I have a Server running an application that I am connecting to via VNC app on my client. The app on the server is pushing 90mb down to the client, which is incredibly slow (3fps). I am curious if there is something that I can do/configure/verify to reduce the amount of data being pushed down?

I would like to measure amount of data I have uploaded and downloaded on the internet since last router reboot. I see there is a STATISTICS under STATUS, which lists the packets, but how big is a packet? And can I just take the values under Receive and Transmit (row called Internet) and multiply with packet size?

I have a D-link Gigabit wireless router which works great but 1 particular wireless device of mine functions/works faster when i have a 100mbps Ethernet connection to it. Is it possible to slow down the wireless speed to a particular device?
Ideally i want my router to continue functioning as normal but i can't afford to have a 20m Cat5 cable running from my router through my hallway and into the living area. I want to slow the connection down to 100mbs for this one device.

I set up an IPSec VPN with NAT-T between two cisco router 871. In particular one router acts as a SERVER and the other one as a CLIENT. All the traffic coming from the hosts connected to the CLIENT-router is sent over the VPN (no split tunnel). Everything works perfectly. The only problem is the amount of time the VPN takes to establish the first connection between the two routers. In particular it takes about two minutes. tell me if this amount of time can be reduced (with a partcular configuration instruction)? Or this is the minimum amount of time required for the first connection establishment?

I'm looking into upgrading our 4400 series controller to 5508's. Currently we have a few sites that have 8-9 4404 100AP controllers and I'm looking to condense these down to either 3 5508-500 or 5 5508-250 depending on cost. I'm wondering what a good port to AP ratio is for controllers with licenses that can handle over 100 AP's. I know the general rule of thumb is 25 AP's per port, but that seems to me to be 4400 way of thinking. I'm trying to also reduce the controllers overall footprint, i.e. ports on the uplink switch, power consumption, rack space etc.

Recently I bought a new router and it works great but I'm still having bandwidth issues. On average there are 6 devices running at once, but only two of which do anything that takes up a significant amount of bandwidth and the router is a good distance away from my computer and my brothers (we do online computer gaming). Is there any way to increase the amount of bandwidth we get up here with out having to move the modem and router?

So lately this week, one rogue user from the boarding house has been downloading(possibly torrenting)/streaming to his/her heart's content resulting in extremely slow connections for everyone else. I've been using an Android app to list all devices connected to the network, and one-by-one, manually disconnected each one to find the problematic, bandwidth-hogging IP. I've found that said user continued to use up bandwidth even up to the wee hours of the morning.
I managed to find his/her IP address, I know I could just block sites/ports via the router's control panel but I guess it's not that simple because: a.) Whoever setup the wireless on our floor forgot the username/password combo(not even the landlady knows) b.) I've asked management about asking for access to the router. Being the IT student on the floor, I guess I'll take the responsibility of at least limiting the rogue user's bandwidth so everyone else on our floor has a fair share.
So my question is: is there a way to limit an IP/application's bandwidth usage via a non-router control panel method, without having to do a hard reset on the router? I have tried in vain to use the Android app I used, but all it takes is a router reboot to disable it (said user knows how to reset the router). It's been days since we've had a stable connection for legitimate schoolwork usage because of this one IP that's using up all the resources.
The router on our floor is a Linksys WRT54G2 and my operating system is Windows 7 64-bit.

As of late, I've been pretty unsatisfied with my WRT54GV6 with DD-WRT. It just can't handle the amount of traffic that my network generates now. I was considering building an Untangle or pfsense box and wanted to know if drivers or performance were an issue.

I have set up 2 RV110w firewall/vpn/routers at remote locations and an ipsec tunnel between them. Once the tunnel gets established everything works fine until it has been idle for some arbitrary amount of time. (Maybe a half hour or less.) at which point we lose server access and can no longer ping across the tunnel. To fix this I have had to dissconnect and reopen the tunnel again, I even went so far as to install an autopinger on the remote end to keep traffic on the tunnel which seems to work but is not going to be a viable long term solution.

I have looked through all of the sh power and sh env commands and seem to only find the power being used on the DC side (since the output referemces 42V). Ddint know if there was something I was overlooking. To each things from the AC side will take getting an electrician in which is what I was hoping not to have to do.

I have an 1841 and started to run into an issue which can be resolved but looking to see what you guys prefer to do in this situation. We allow users to connect the laptop via ethernet and wireless to our network at the same time as well as an iPad or any other wireless technology. With that said, for the most part each user has two IP's at any given point. The issue comes in is that I have a large amount of IP exclusions for servers, printers, switches, etc on the exclude list. I am starting to see that the 255 address are not enough to make a long story short. I am also using the 1841 to handle another range for the voice network, which has no isues. What is the best way to fix this issue? Can I run a virtual VLAN off that 1841 for everyone to use and then have the servers, switches, printers, etc on another one? I want to assume no, as both interfaces are used on the back of the 1841 for the two VLANS running now. Or is the only way to handle this with this device to say that as a policy you can only connect assigned company hardware to the network?

The idea is I want to stop dialing if the dialing cost is over than appropriate amount. For example, if dialing cost reach to $200, then stop dialing and alert to the system administator by E-mail or something. There is the way to limit the timed-out but this won't work for that.
