Using Multiple Routers Without Significantly Reducing Network Speed

Aug 23, 2011

I recently got a new modem/router device from my ISP and its wifi is fairly weak (no external antennas) especially in my basement. Since wifi is no longer an option and I only have one ethernet connection to my basement I was thinking of using my old router to distribute the one ethernet connection to multiple devices. Connecting my one ethernet connection to the old router, and its port#1 to my PC in the basement works without any meddling, but the speed has taken a significant hit. Before the second router I was getting ~30-40Mbps from my ISP. With the second router it is reduced to ~10-20Mbps. Both routers I assume are capable of at least 100Mbps (probably even 1Gbps?). The older router is a Linksys WRT54G which can do 54Mbps wirelessly so I assume it can exceed 10-20 wired.I tried giving the second router a static IP with DHCP off, but it did not seem to make a difference. I don't know if I set it up correctly, however. The modem/router uses 192.168.0.xxx while the second uses 192. 168. 1.xxx so I do not think there is any conflicts in the DHCP.

Belkin Routers :: N600 Significantly Slowing System's Upload Speed

Dec 23, 2012

At the recommendation of a tech, I ran a speed test (speedtest.net) on my system with my N600 in place. The upload speeds averaged out to 0.21mbps. I took the router out of the system and the speed climbed to an average of 0.37. What is the problem with the router and what need I do to boost the upload speed with it in place?

Cisco WAN :: 871W Significantly Drops Speed On WAN Int When ZBF Is On

Jan 16, 2011

As soon as I add the interfaces of the router to security zones it significantly drops speed on WAN interface, below 1  Mbs. I noted this because I wasn't able to watch youtube. Moreover the bandwidth test from speedtest.net hangs and doesn't come to a result. Here below is the diagnostic example while doing that test. The question is what is going on? I have two iPhones and three computers in my network, that's it. My ISP bandwidth is 10 Mbs, so is this the router hardware limitations, or kind of malfunction or some misconfiguration down here? What could be done here ?

Dell :: XPS 15 L521X Wi-Fi Signal Speed Drops Significantly

Jul 24, 2012

I got my Brand new xps 15 yesterday, It works fine, looks great, I'm overall satisfied with it. (even though it gets warm all the time)

Problem is, the WIFI doesn't work well at all, I'm 2 meters from my box right now, And I'm not experiencing any problems, but as soon as I get upstairs in my bedroom, my signal speed drops significantly, I can't even load a you tube video, I was downloading a game from steam yesterday, and the dl speed dropped to 6mb/s!! That's awful, If this problem can't be fixed, I'll be returning mine, and won't buy any other Dell product, I don't see how a laptop that pricey can have that kind of problems. ( because I heard I wasn't the only one, a lot of people have the same problem).

Linksys Wireless Router :: E1000 Speed Drops Down Significantly To 8 MBPS

Aug 11, 2011

I purchased a new router - cisco e1000. Currently, i have 2 laptops wirelessly connected to this router. When i do a broadband speed test, the speed drops down significantly to 8MBPS while if i connect it to the cable modem  directly (wired) i.e., without router, i'm getting 15 MBPS download speed. I did a couple of times this speed check and the results are same. I tried changing the advanced settings in the router (which was specified in one of the post in this forum) but no luck. Is it that i need to buy e4200 to match the wired speed of 15 MBPS or what other things I can do to get the same speed of my cable modem (provided by my ISP)?

according to [URL] enabling WMM should increase wireless performance. Although this article is rather old, how is the RV220W expected to behave?

In my case, speed measurements show a clear decrease in wireless performance when WMM is enabled.

For example:
WMM enabled - max 15MBits/s (ticked WMM checkbox - default settings)
WMM disabled - max 40MBits/s

Home Network :: Wireless Router Significantly Slowing Down Internet?

Sep 19, 2011

I have cable internet with a speed plan in the 10-15 mbps range. I have a wireless Belkin g router that is several years old. Connected to the router I have my cable modem as well as my PS3. I connect wirelessly from my PC to the internet, as my PC is in the other room (more on that later). When I'm streaming movies via WiFi to my TV, the connection is highly unstable. Some days, I will not experience any stuttering (or very minor stuttering), whereas other times the stuttering is almost unbearable. Last night, I had trouble streaming a DVD quality movie whenever it went above 2 mbps total bitrate. Other times, I can stream HD movies without much stuttering (except for very action packed scenes).Interestingly, I stream Netflix movies over my PS3 via a *wired* connection. Last night, I conducted a speed test on my PS3. First, I had the PS3 plugged into the wireless router. I achieved speeds around 2 - 4 mbps on average. I then plugged my PS3 directly into my modem and achieved speeds around 10 mbps! The boost was instantaneous. I should note that on my PC, I speed test regularly over the WiFi and achieve around 4-6 mbps on average (only once did I achieve 11 mbps).

Getting Multiple Routers And All PCs On Same Network?

Jul 6, 2012

I want the following configuration:

- 1 Master router with no PC's connected (only the slave routers will connect to it)

- 2 Slave routers each connected to master router Each slave router will have multiple PC's connected via ethernet and/or wireless

I have been able to set this up with all PC's having an internet connection. BUT I need all the PC's to see each other on a single network. I can see all the PC's on a single slave router but I can't see the PC's on slave 1 from slave 2 or vice versa. I have been using the WAN inputs on both slave routers. All 3 routers are Netgear WRN3500L.

Home Network With Multiple Routers

Dec 31, 2011

I have a 2 wire HomePortal 1000SW modem in our home office. Its connected to a dlink DI-524 wireless router (also in the office), which is connected to a dlink DIR-601 in the opposite end of the house, both are connected using LAN ports, not WAN. All 3 of these devices are capable of wireless, and all have the same SSID and wep encryption key (they use different channels, 1, 6, 11). As of right now, i have the DI-524's wireless disabled, and the wireless is still on for the DIR-601 and the HomePortal, but only the HomePortal has DHCP turned on. The problem I'm having is that i can connect and get assigned an ip address when I'm in the office, but if i initially connect to the network near the DIR-601, i get limited connectivity and a self-assigned IP-address.

Multiple Wifi Routers On Network With Netgear Prosafe Vpn Firewall?

But i cannot get to the home page to change the IP address. 'multiple routers' it says to simply unplug one, so you can get to the config page at 192.168.1.1. I can not unplug the main router for the business, right? Do i need to change the IP of the Netgear temporarily? Will that bring down the network?

Cisco Routers :: Linksys SRW2008P Decreases Network Speed

Jun 3, 2013

I try to connect Siemens SIP IP phone to switch LinksysSRW2008P with PoE for scheme:
main switch <-------> linksys <-------> phone

I can't have access to Linksys by local network or web interface, so I connect through COM port and reboot the device and restore all settings to defaults. There was another linksys switch with the same default IP in my network, so I've tried to change ip address for my Linksys device. After that I can ping switch IP without lost packages successfully and partly access to login page by web, but including Linksys to the local network causes decreasing all network working speed, so the web administrative form can not be loading at all.    In both cases (default ip or another one) the set isn't working, so I can't have access to the phone by ping or web interface. The cable to main switch inserts to port 1 and green rectangle indicator is flashing rapidly. The cable to the phone inserts to port 2 and orange indicator is lighting, green indicator is flashing slowly.   Interestingly, only one port has status UP (port 1), all another port has status DOWN. If I replace cables ports with each other, only the port where cable to main switch is inserted, will have status UP. The phone station is getting power from switch in both cases.  I've tried to change Spd/Dpx ports' parameters, used DHCP for getting IP, but I've gotten no result.  How can I solve the problem? Is Linksys switch worked or defective?

Cisco :: Multiple Routers Nat To One Server?

May 3, 2012

I have a job with a budget-limited client who has three Cisco RV042 dual-WAN routers. They had hoped to establish rather seamless *inbound* service, which doesn't seem to be the real purpose for these units, they appear to be designed for bandwidth aggregation and/or rather seamless *outbound* service.Since they have three of these routers, and three broadband connections (two different 5 IP blocks at one ISP, one 5 IP block at a second ISP) I am toying with the idea of using one router per broadband, and configuring each router for One-to-One NAT, dispensing with the dual-WAN redundancy feature. Each router will come from a different public subnet, yet have a one-to-one NAT to the *same* internal server, for instance:

Router 1 - 74.92.X.X ---> NAT ---> 192.168.1.100
Router 2 - 67.78.X.X ---> NAT ---> 192.168.1.100
Router 3 - 97.76.X.X ---> NAT ---> 192.168.1.100

The routers will be configured on the same subnet internally. 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2, and 192.168.1.3 respectively. I'll use weighted multiple default gateways on the server's IP configuration, to establish their default and failover gateways. My question is, does configuring multiple routers for one-to-one NAT to the *same* server cause any conflict or failure? You know, of the "sorry bub that private interface is already sucked up by router 1 and I can't do this" nature?

Connecting Multiple Home Routers?

Feb 22, 2012

wireless networking in their home. Their home is built of bricks (inside walls and outside), so basically going about 10 feet around a wall will drop a wireless signal. One problem is that the router outside in the office has a separate network than the router inside of the house by the kitchen. They're both configured to use different SSIDs/encryption keys, etc, but they both are connected via ethernet cable. Problem is, moving from one side of the house, she has to switch her tablet/iPhone to the network being broadcasted by the first router, and then vice versa when going around the second wireless network.

Can I just simply configure the router inside as a wireless bridge and use the exact same SSID/encryption etc and have only one network show up regardless of which one she's closest to?I basically want to set up her network to where she just needs one wireless network, and no matter where she go in her house, she's connected to the same network (regardless of which router it's connected to), and still have internet access.

all I got was I have to do something with MAC cloning and SSIDs.

Multiple Wireless Routers To 1 WAN Port?

Feb 16, 2012

setup multiple wireless routers to one Internet connection. We have one cable modem (with built in wireless router) for Internet connection. Over a wide area (500 feet over two floors) I would like to connect to the Internet throughout this area wirelessly. The computers sharing the connection do not need to share with each other and do not need to see each other. Security is not a major factor. The building material is cinder brick walls (which weakens the wireless signal quickly).I have several older (2008 or 2009) wireless routers. I was thinking of putting these routers at various locations in the building with a wired connection back to the WAN modem. Each wireless router could the service a smaller area in the building. My plan is to turn off the DHCP on each wireless router. Do I need to run a wired cable (lan port to Lan port) back to the cable modem or can I use the wireless routers to connect to the wireless cable modem?

Multiple Access Points 2 Routers

Apr 1, 2012

I've recently bought another PC, but set it up in a different area than my existing computers. It's down in my basement, along with my PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii. Now the problem is connecting all of these "toys" to the internet. I only have one in-wall ethernet port, which my PC is currently plugged into. Leaving my PS3, Xbox, and Wii, only with an extremely weak wireless connection. Now, my original thought was just to buy a network "switch," BUT then I remembered I have an old D-Link router. So, logically I should be able to plug an ethernet into the wall, then into the WAD port on my router, then plug my Xbox, PS3, Wii, and PC into the 4 remaining LAN ports on my router. I want another WiFi access point using the same network, and a wired connection for all of my gadgets.

Cisco Routers :: SRP547W - Multiple WAN IPs?

Mar 18, 2012

There are a few discussions on this topic but nothing I can find indicated definativley shows that this can be done with this model.I have an ADSL service that came with 1 IP address and then we later purchased an additional 4 IPs (2 usable) for the same service. On our network we have SBS2011 and also a dedicated web server. What I would like to do is forward HTTPS to the web server on our inital IP and then forward https for OWA  to one of the IPs on the additional set.Our initial IP is xxx.yyy.104.112 which I would like to forward port 443 to  192.168.0.12 - web server

The additional IPs are :

aaa.bbb.30.24 (Gateway Address)
aaa.bbb.30.25
aaa.bbb.30.26 - I would like to forward this to 192.168.0.2 - SBS box
aaa.bbb.30.27

I have tried as suggested in other thread setting up a software DMZ that sends public IP aaa.bbb.30.26 to 192.168.0.12. The xxx.yyy.104.112 to 192.168.0.12 works with a port 443  forward fine.

When I do this I cant connect from outside. If I change the port forward on 443 to go to 192.168.0.2 I can get to the SBS box from outside using the aaa.bbb.30.26 address .I have also tried creating a subinterface for the aaa.bbb.30.24 addresses and this also doesnot seem to work. Just I am basically asking for confirmation that this can be done with this model, I have put in the latest firmware.

Routers / Switches :: Setup Multiple Public IP's?

Apr 7, 2011

At my company, we lease 3 static public IP addresses from 1 ISP. We want to have 3 separate networks that each use one of the IP addresses. Network 1 is the computer network, network 2 is the VOIP network, and network 3 is the security camera network. I am trying to determine the best way to do this. I have come up with 2 solutions in my head, but I'm not sure if they will work or not. I would like to get some input. Solution 1:Solution 1 looks something like this. Fiber box -> Router-> 3 switches. There would be one WAN input on the router, that would have a static route to 3 different LAN ports. For example, address 24.244.208.101 would be assigned to LAN port 1, 24.244.208.102 would be assigned to LAN port 2, and 24.244.208.103 would be assigned to LAN port 3 (by assigned, I mean have a static route to it). Is there some type of router that is capable of doing this? Solution 2:Solution 2 looks something like this. Fiber box -> Switch -> 3 Routers. The ethernet cable would run from the Fiber Box to a switch, and then 3 routers would be plugged into the switch. Each router would have the Static information configured in them. Would both of these methods work? If so, which would be the best way to go?
