VoIP / IP CCTV PoE Switch Recommendation?
Apr 6, 2012
recommendation for a PoE-compliant (802.3af) 10/100 ethernet switch suited for the following use. A client wants a separate [from their data] network dedicated to their new IP CCTV/IP Intercomm system (Stentofon ISO5 Cleanroom Certified). Total of 15 devices, all of which support PoE, 11 of which require it. The intercomm system will be the primary method of communication with personnel inside the clean space, so it must have minimum downtime.
1) 16x RJ45 (Only 15 devices -- anything over 16 ports is waste, SFP/expansion/combo ports not required)
2) *All* ports 802.3af PoE compliant, approx 5W load.
3) 10/100 (Gigabit not necessary, there's only 2 cameras and voice traffic is compressed)
4) Prefer rackmount but not necessary
5) Prefer Cisco/Cisco SB simply because I trust 'em (have an IAD and switch going strong for years with no downtime )

I have 6 cisco switches already on my network and I just got a 2960S PoE switch that I need to enable for VoIP. The voice vendor is coming in to setup our phone system for VoIP and I need to enable this new 2960S 48 port switch for the VoIP phones, I don't know how to do that, or other taskes needed for this project.
I was told that I need to uplink the new 2960S with the Catalysy 4507R using an ethernet cable and to "trunk the ports" and enable the 2960S as a VTP client - ok great - how?
I was told I also need to use the switch port voice VLAN command for the new VLAN - again, great - but how?
I actually was able to telnet into the switch and I gave it an IP and I created a new vlan but thats all. We are using non Cisco IP phones.

We have a Cisco slm248gt-na smart switch in our office that I am trying to configure to support and optimize for VoIP. We have desktops hooked up off the phones in most cases. Are there any config guidelines to optimize the switch so it has proper QOS set and VoIP gets higher priority over data.

im having this strange issue where everytime i plug in a voip phone to my 3550 the switch disconnects another voip phone.then to fix the disconnected phone (7940) i need to power off the phone 5-10 minutes then power it on again.
but the strange thing is, once i have to do that to fix the phone and connect the phone back to the switch, the port link is up, but no macs are seen on that port.

There are many software available for this but the issues is how they all function. Example: One software Synchronized FTP allows you to set a local/remote folder and sync files between them. What was never disclosed is that you need Windows Task Scheduler to run the synchronization, and you do not see a progress indicator. I also tried TurboFTP but it felt like landing a space shuttle.

I'm currently assigned the task of purchasing new wireless access points, for our offices, at my workplace. We've previously been using "HP V-M200" access points, but we encoutered heavy throughput problems with these. During my tests of the network, I've seen these APs decrease their tranfer-rate to 30Mb, during file-transfer and ping-test. The issue here is concerning the transfer-rate from the Network Interface Card of my laptop to the wireless AP (did an iptraf while testing, and then noticed the 30Mb).

I've got a network setup (n only) with a bunch of devices wireless and wired. I've got in my PC an Asus PCE-N53 wifi card (comp isn't close enough to modem), and using it and speedtest.net I get speeds up to 40mbps (rarely, at average around 28-33mbps). When I test on a wired PC or on my brother's surface pro, I get from 60-80mbps. I can't for the life of me figure out what is wrong with the asus card. I've tried reinstalling the drivers, switching PCI slots, different system and it's still the same.

I have a Cisco SG 300-20 as the core switch, layer 3. It is 192.168.4.6 on VLAN1 and 192.168.5.1 for VLAN2 (VOIP). All the ports are set in trunk mode. DHCP relay is setup on this switch.
The phones connected into a layer 2, Catalyst 2960-S switch. All ports are set in trunk mode. Default gateway on it is set to 192.168.5.1.
DHCP for both VLANs is provided by a Windows Server 2008 R2 server (the relay IP 192.168.4.15).
There is also an ASA 5510 in the mix which is 192.168.4.1. It has a route added to it for the 192.168.5.0 network to go to the SG 300 (192.168.5.1).
Just the two switches can ping each other on the 192.168.5.x network when I "add vlan 2" to the trunk port that is connected between the SG 300 and the 2960. The phones don't get DHCP on the 2960 switch. And I cannot ping 192.168.5.x from the ASA or anything else on the 192.168.4.x network.
After a bit of reading on intra-vlan routing for the SG 300 switch, I am thinking the SG 300 has to be the "center" of things so I need to make it 192.168.4.1 to be the gateway for both VLANs and change the ASA to 192.168.4.2 for VLAN1, etc. And I really can't do asymmetric routing with this switch.

I am designing a dual local router ISP multihomed network and I need some recommendations on the edge routers and the distribution layer switches I should use in my design. Right now we have two 6509s as internet edge devices multihoming to two ISPs, with load sharing and failover (layer 2 and layer 3). I was thinking of using Cisco 7200 routers at the internet edge and Cisco 4500 series switches behind the router for layer 2 switching(ISP---7200 series ---4200 series). Current traffic pattern on my two 6509s is around 100Mbps on an average on each switch when they are load balancing.. and when one failovers to another it just doubles. So I need to make sure the devices I chose has enough throughput for my current requirements and future growth.

I'm looking at upgrading our FWSM modules in our 6500's. They're the WS-SVC-FWM-1 modules.
We're running on version 3.2(12) at the moment and I'm looking to jump up to 4. Any recommendations around whether I should to go to 4.1(6) or 4.0(16)? There aren't any features in particular that I would need in 4.1 but want a good stable base to sit on for 12 months until I look at this exercise all over again.

I'm trying to identify a Cisco router that will give 300+Mbps through a 1Gb WAN port. I think the 1921 can get up to around 300Mbps with the on board RJ45 ports, but are there any other/better suitable models?
There's no need for any other particular functionality or feature set, the routers aren't doing anything fancy or unusual - it's the achieved throughput that's important.

Strange one this - I have had this working for ages but after power cut it stopped! I have networked my home Avtech KPD675 DVR via my Belkin router. I can get live pics on my home desktop PC via Internet Explorer (Port 80) and via my dyndns address. I also can get both of these live pics away from the site on a remote PC.However, in my home network, when I use my laptop (wireless connection) I have full access to internet etc. but when I try to log in to my DVR via Internet Explorer, or the client software, I get login error and no pics!I thought it might be a firewall problem as I use different antvirus/ firewall (Virgin) on my laptop, so I temporarily switched off the firewall and still could not get pix!!

I recently purchased a CCTV System and linked it to my LAN.I use a Netgear DGN2200 Router and link from the CCTV DVR using Ethernet over the Socket Ring, (again using a Netgear product).I want to access the DVR over the internet and seem to have used internet based advice and got confused. Do I have to contact my ISP and pay for a Static IP? I am on BT Business Broadband and they say I need to pay 5pm to have a Static IP, but Port forward.com indicated that this is not necessary to set up a Static IP, and "watch your ISP doesn't try and sell you one." url...I am not clear on whether the Router needs to be linked statically to the ISP or does my PC???

Is there any way I can assess that LAN IP online at my house maybe a VPN?

I currently have 6 CCTV cameras in my house, which are physically wired to a DVR. I can view these cameras through a monitor using DVI out. However, I would like to be able to view these cameras from anywhere I can access the Internet. The DVR that I have has an Ethernet port. Do I need to host a server to stream these cameras online, or can I simply connect the DVR to my router and then access the router through a static ip?

I have a PC that runs cameras covering the access to my house ( due to an earlier incident where someone thought my stuff would look better at their place ). It has been running fine with XP and a VIA C3 box for years, but the mobo died and so my woe begins...I have slapped together a D510 box with W7 32 Enterprise, but cannot get it to network properly. ATM it is propped on my dining table with Cat5 threatening to trip someone up, so I'm not really the flavour of the month in the house.
Regular file sharing ( looking at docs, pics, etc. ) is not a problem between the house PC and the CCTV box ( bidirectional ). The old CCTV box was controlled remotely using VNC with great success, and I was hoping to continue in the same vein. Unfortunately VNC cannot connect from the house box to the CCTV box, but will work the other way when initiated from the CCTV box, not very practical. UVNC will not work in either direction and will not loop back to itself, and Remote Desktop does not work either. Error messages are "server running as application" for UVNC and server unavailable ( words to that effect ) in VNC. Remote Desktop just times out. Firewalls on both machines have been off and on during testing with no apparent change. There is a Netcomm ADSL2 4 port modem that ties them together.
It should work, it did work, so I know it can work, but networks are not my strong suit so I am throwing it out for input here. I have been banging my head on this particular rock for about 10 hours and half a bottle of bourbon and it is 00:49 local time, so forgive me if I have failed to include the crucial nugget of information that will unravel this mess.Where should I start, or is there a no-fuss remote control software option for Windows 7 that I need instead?

Unlike most DVR's, this particular model has a 4-Channel RJ-45 input (others normally have analog BNC video inputs) this is achieved since the cameras come with video baluns which make use of ethernet (RJ-45) wire.can I have such a set-up without using a DVR, instead I would channel 4 cameras to a wireless router with 4 RJ-45 inputs? From there maybe I could connect it to the internet for remote viewing or to a home network for better streaming / saving video recorded into hard disk?

after being able to see the cctv on the local network and remotely, we are simply not able to connect remotely again. This happens several hours after leaving site. The clients ip seems to be unchanged from last time, and we do get a " resource online but isn't responding to connections attempts" message from IE8. The ports have never actually shown as open from online port verification sites, but again, we were able to see the cams via 3g and from another town just fine. And we can see them on the locally. I'm convinced it has to be some setting on the router relevant to port forwarding.

Trying to select a router that will work well networking a computer with a nettalk duo, on a limited bandwidth connection: .3/3Mbps up/down. From what little I've been able to find on this, QoS bandwidth control seems critical, yet the list of recommended routers from Nettalk seems to favor routers that don't have this feature. On the other hand, the list apparently hasn't been updated in a year and a half.
