Selecting A Router For VOIP?

Apr 6, 2012

Trying to select a router that will work well networking a computer with a nettalk duo, on a limited bandwidth connection: .3/3Mbps up/down. From what little I've been able to find on this, QoS bandwidth control seems critical, yet the list of recommended routers from Nettalk seems to favor routers that don't have this feature. On the other hand, the list apparently hasn't been updated in a year and a half.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E3000 5Ghz Auto(DFS) Versus Selecting Channel

Nov 15, 2012

I have an E3000 Dual Band. On my 5Ghz channel, I can select Auto(DFS) or I can manually select a channel.First of all, what does the DFS stand for? My 2.4 GhZ channel only has Auto, not Auto(DFS).

Second, when I select Auto(DFS), my wireless speed defaults to 144Mbps, and is only a single channel (I can see it in the in SSIDer utility). When I manually select a channel, no matter what channel it is, I get 300mbps and I can see that the signal is two channels (for instance, 36+40). Why Auto(DFS) doesn't automatically select the best channel and fastest speed?

Cisco Routers :: SRP547W - Selecting NAT IP From Static Range

Feb 18, 2012

I have a SRP547W which I'm trying to replicate a configuration I had on an old Cisco 847 that recently died.

My ISP has allocated me a /29. The DSL configuration means that the IP address on the PPP session is assigned randomly. I have a mix of internal devices on a private IP range and a few devices with publically accessible addresses. All of the devices on the internal network need to be NATted to a public IP from the range allocated to me.

I can see that I can use the software or hardware DMZ to set up the servers, but I can't see any way to configure the external NAT address.

Cisco :: BGP Selecting Paths - All Sites Are Configured With The Same AS Number (55555)?

Mar 1, 2012

I look after 5 sites in total. All sites are connected together via MPLS. Two of the sites, HQ1 and HQ2 are also connected together via 1Gb Metro so traffic is just switched between the 2 networks.EIGRP is fed into BGP to pass the routes between the sites with all sites in the same EIGRP AS.

All sites are configured with the same AS number (55555) and connect into the same service provider network so each site is connecting to a neighbor in the same AS (444).

I want all incoming traffic from the 3 sites to come in through HQ1 always. Can I influence the service provider's network to make sure this happens? Is this done via "set local-preference 20" on my side or do I have to get the service provider to make changes on their side too.

Cisco VPN :: ASA 5510 / AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Selecting Wrong

Feb 27, 2012

Here is the pertinent information first...

Windows 7
Cisco AnyConnect SecureMobility Client 3.0.4235
Cisco ASA 5510 firewall 8.2

The problem is.....When I log in, the client does its start-up bit, and then displays a "This certificate is intended for the following purpose(s):" message.  If I decline the certificate, it gives me the error message shown in the image, but I can otherwise continue and establish my VPNs with no problem.

Unfortunately, the certificate it selects has nothing to do with my organization  ( in fact, the certificate is for "*.whitepages.com"  - see images).  To make matters worse, I can not find this referenced certificate anywhere under my user context in Windows.

I have tried removing, rebooting, and re-installing - it does no good. How do I force the client to stop using this incorrect certificate, and to at least use one that belongs to my organization?

D-Link DIR-825 :: VOIP Behind Router Does Not Work

Aug 8, 2009

I have a DIR-825 since a couple of days, Hardware version B1, firmware 2.01EU  (date Fri, 12, Jun, 2009 = latest european firmware) Have portforwarding for ports 25, 80, 443, 143, 993 via virtual server to a local linux server (192.168.0.3)

My (SIP protocol) VOIP phone (192.168.0.100) does not work anymore since I use this router.  It worked fine on my old WRT54G.  The phone logs-in normally at the voip provider but when I make a call, it seems that the ports are not forwarded or are blocked by the firewall.  I have tried to manually setup portforwarding and virtual server instead of portforwarding.

I have tried many things, from disabling QOS, SPI, end point filtering and more but it does not work.  I have also programmed DMZ for my ip-phone, but it does not work. Nothing found in the logfiles about frame drops. (I have setup a syslog on my linux-server)

There seems to be a bug causing frames dropped, as my setup has always worked with my WRT54, and should work with DMZ set, but it does not.  The same setup works fine on a DIR-655 of a friend.

VOIP Gateway And Wireless Router Lashup?

Dec 5, 2011

Can a VOIP gateway device be connected between a DSL or cable modem and an existing wireless router? Here's my problem. The cable and phone lines come into a box in the garage, that's where the cable modem is. But my wireless router is in the attic on the end of 50 feet of CAT5 cable. I want to add a VOIP modem, but want it in the garage where the phone lines are. It's not convenient to bring a second CAT5 cable back to the box from the wireless router, so can the VOIP modem be connected inline with the router, or in parallel (Y-cable) with it?

Linksys Wired Router :: VOIP Dropping Connection 2-3x Per Day

Feb 13, 2013

I have a strong internet signal with good SNR coming out of my cable modem, then a nice short 3ft cable going to my linksys VOIP router (I think it's a SPA 2102). Whether I have anything downstream plugged in or not, the "phone" light on the VOIP router goes off every once in a while and when I check I find that I've lost both dial tone and Internet - basically everything downstream of the VOIP router. Have tried every variation on configuration you can imagine (feeding just one phone, feeding the entire phone wiring to the house, nothing at all plugged into the phone jack, no computers downstream plugged in, replaced all the cables, ...). I've replaced BOTH the cable modem and the linksys VOIP router and the problem continues. My cable company says my signal is fine. They suggested a signal amplifier but the coax comes straight to the modem, no splitter, and I'm always seeing 6-7dBmV. My phone company says their router must be losing signal upstream and refusing to reconnect, especially now that we've tried replacing their VOIP router with no change. Any chance I got two 'bad' routers in a row? Not sure what they did for setup parameters. I'm not particularly tech-savvy but have read a lot since seeing these issues, have run my own ping and tracert checks and everything seems to be wonderful... but then most of the time everything IS fine. When I have phone it's crystal clear and when I have internet it's nice and fast. I sometimes go 24hrs or so without a drop, but other times I'm resetting 2-3x in a couple of hours. All I do is power off the VOIP router and back on and everything is fine, for a while. After first getting VOIP things were fine for 4-6 weeks.

Linksys Wireless Router :: VOIP Does Not Work Via E4200?

Jul 25, 2011

I have a new Polycom Soundpoint IP550 VOIP phone that was not connecting via my old WRT54GS router.  I purchased a new router, the E4200, thinking it was just the age of my original router.  It also will not allow the VOIP traffic through.  I can connect the VOIP phone directly to my CenturyLink modem and it works.  But when I connect it back to the router it stops.

I contacted Cisco support and they had me upgrade the firmware to 1.0.02 build 13  May 24, 2011 version.  Also adjusted down the MTU to 1364. That still did not work so they told me to take the router back to the store.  I have not done that yet as I want to ensure that the router is really broken and not that I am missing a setting.  The tech said that I should be able to plug the VOIP phone into the router and make NO additional changes.

USG50 Best Gigabit WAN Router For Small Business VOIP Usage?

Mar 13, 2013

I have a small business customer that is on the hunt for a new small business level router. While they are staying OK on a current consumer level gigabit WAN Netgear box, we are eager to implement something much better. After giving a Zyxel USG50 a try, we had a nightmare with their VOIP provider, Vocalocity, that doesn't like to have SIP ALG turned on (which Zyxel says is a requirement for their USG boxes to work with SIP service). I was curious if any of you had recommendations on great gigabit WAN small business routers (not UTMs of any sort). Here is their setup:

* 1 incoming WAN connection from a fiber provider called Sidera. They are achieving over 100Mbps currently and their provider Sidera REQUIRES us to have a gigabit WAN capable router in order to match the duplex and speed of their enteprise switches.

* About 8-12 office computers.

* About 8-10 VOIP desk phones through Vocalocity (Cisco SPA phones using SIP service, all cloud hosted - a Zyxel USG50 wreaked havoc on the service).

We are looking for something in the $100-250 price range. There seem to be a few options but I am not sure which one would be best to go with, that has a great compatibility out of box with cloud hosted voip phone service.

Any experience with any of the above units in such a setup as we have? The highest priorities for us are LAN-WAN throughput and VOIP quality/bandwidth/compatibility. Dual WAN is not a necessity, but nice to have. Prefer that all ports on the box are full gigabit if possible, but WAN has to be.

Linksys Wireless Router :: Tmobile WRTU54G-TM Connection To VOIP Service?

Jan 18, 2012

A client is using Tmobile VOIP using the aforementioned WRTU54G-TM 2-line VOIP wireless router with 4-port hub.  What they would like to do is to place this in their network and NOT have it change (route) the network addresses being assigned to devices 'behind' this router so even their wireless devices are all "on the same network" as the wired devices BEFORE this unit,  In essence, preserve the same 'network and subnet mask' that is being issued by their DSL router via it's integrated DHCP server. ... Rather like operating this unit like an 'access point' instead of a router.Under most circumstances, I might try to assign this router a static IP outside the scope of the DHCP range the DSL router would supply, then plug the (gigabit) Ethernet network cable into one of the 4 Ethernet ports on the rear of this router - but apparently this does not 'facilitate' a connection to Tmobile's VOIP service. When attempting to do this, the connected telephone devices do not get a phone line connection and the status light(s) that normally indicate proper operation do not illuminate.

Cisco Switches :: SG200-50 VLAN For VoIP Phones Connected To SRP541W Router

Apr 15, 2013

I am new to VLANs although I generally understand the concept.  I have a small office with 25 desktop/laptops and 15 VoIP phones connected with a SG200-50 switch and on Port 1 I have the Cisco SRP541W router for DHCP and Internet access.  My goal is simple: 1) Segregate the VoIP phones (voice) from the computers (data) and 2) Prioritize the VoIP phones traffic.

I believe this can be accomplished by setting up a second VLAN and maybe a third (if the default should not be used) and then identifying those ports as Voice VLAN ports.  I guess I just need to know how to flag each interface and each port so that they all can talk to the router on Port 1 yet the voice and data will be in different broadcast domains.  Also, do I need a management VLAN??

Is this setup correct? VLAN 1 - default (data) Port 1 (Trunk) (Tagged)Port 2 - 30 (Access) (Untagged)VLAN 2 - voice Port 1 (Trunk) (Tagged)Port 31 - 48 (Access) (Untagged) What should the interface settings be on each port (General, Access or Trunk)? What should the port VLAN membership be on each port (Tagged or Untagged)??
