Windows 7 Notebook And Desktop Can't See Each Other?
Mar 13, 2012
Both run Win 7; both use lan conections to the same router (Linksys 310N). Both get to the internet. The desktop can see the notebook (shared folders), but the notebook cannot see the desktop. I cannot now generate a network map (I could earlier today), due to an "incompatible device".
There are also wireless connections but currently I don't use them. Both machines are on the same-named connection. Homegroup doesn't work at all on either computer.
I would really like to print from the notebook. All the printers are wired into the desktop. All are shared. Yesterday I could print from the notebook. On occasion, the homegroup shows both computers but hasn't for a while. In File Explorer, on the notebook, not even the notebook appears under the Network icon.

Both run Win 7; both use lan conections to the same router (Linksys 310N). Both get to the internet. And while the network map shows both of them, they are both unreachable. BUT NOT ALWAYS. Sometimes, maybe after several hours of uptime, they can access eachother. And the printers, which are wired into the desktop, then can be used by the notebook. BUT not always. Like now, all my printers are "offline" as far as the notebook is concerned. There are also wireless connections but currently I don't use them. Both machines are on the same-named connection. Homegroup doesn't work at all on either computer. I would really like to print from the notebook. All the printers are wired into the desktop. All are shared. I have an ancient Compaq V2410 notebook which has started to drop my home Wifi connection recently (started about a week ago). At first, I thought it was the install of Firefox 8 as it froze and crashed but it happens with Chrome, IE and even when not running a browser.
My ISP is O2 in the UK and I have a DSL2+ service with the O2 Wireless Box II. I have gone through a power down cycle on the router and it continues to work with my ethernet-connected desktop PC. I have changed the Wireless Card in the notebook but fault is still intermittent. The notebook was also set to OpenDNS servers but that has been set back to Automatic DNS servers.
The notebook has the latest free versions of Avast Anti-virus & Comodo Firewall and the main issue is that the notebook has 640Mb system RAM which means that various Windows services have been Disabled or set to Manual.
I can sometimes recover the Wifi signal by switching the wireless on/off but it is sporadic. I have attached the Xirrus WiFi screenshots at startup, at fault state and at recovery state together with the ipconfig.txt output.

I have a Windows 7 desktop (so it's NOT wireless) that is having problems with packet loss. Now, the modem is fine, I've tested 'pingtest' on some laptops and the packet loss is very minimal. I've tried reinstalling the drivers for the LAN controller, using a different ethernet cable, using the 'winsock' reset command, and I have no luck. This does effect upload times on YouTube, to where a minute long video takes an hour.

I've got an older HP desktop that's running on Windows XP SP3 in my living room and it's all of a sudden not connecting to the internet. I know the problem isn't with the router or internet connection themselves, as my laptop works perfectly fine. I've tried resetting the TCP/IP, resetting the modem, and resetting the WINSOCK entries. Also, here is the IP configuration screen:

I have a Windows XP SP3.I bought this machine used not too long ago, it came with a legit fresh install of XP and all the drivers. And it's been running in great shape until this. I'll retrace my steps as best I can.I was on the internet and my connection was still connected (Completely, not limited) but my browser wouldn't surf. I naturally restarted my router, nothing changed. So I restarted my computer. When it came back on the Wireless didn't boot up like it used to. I checked my internet, it was fine. My laptop was running fine on it.Now as I try to figure out whats wrong, my "Wireless Network Connection" is gone completely from my computer. AND the Wireless isn't on my device manager anymore?? I installed another USB wireless stick (which I used on my old desktop) and it's working ok but I feel like my connection used to be so much better which the ASUS wifi instead. I un-installed the driver, and re-installed. [code]

My Windows 7 desktop cannot use the ethernet connection for some reason while it works just fine on my Macbook Pro. When I run ipconfig in CMD I'm seeing a 169 IP address which from my googling of the issue I understand is invalid. When I run network diagnostics to try to fix it the result is that "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration, and that this is now FIXED. My network and sharing center screen even claims I have internet access for a few seconds (instead of a red x between the network and internet icons) before dropping out again.I've been trying all kinds of stuff to try to fix this like ipconfig /release and /renew but this doesn't work because it says an address hasn't been associated with the network endpoint and so no operation can be performed "while it has its media disconnected."

I have a Toshiba Win 7 laptop and a custom-built (JNCS) XP desktop. Both access the Internet thru a D-Link router. I would like to be able to access the working files on each computer from the other. I have changed the workgroup name on my Win 7 laptop to the same name as the workgroup on my XP desktop. I have gone thru the instructions Microsoft gives you, but they are FAR from clear because things don't happen or choices are not available that they reference.

I have a Win 7 machine with Win SBS 2011 in my office and an iMac. The Win machine is being setup for Exchange 2010. My problem is this: I can't Remote Desktop in from my iMac into the Win machine, but CAN when outside the network. The Win7 machine has a static IP, the iMac a dynamic. When I access the internal part of my router I can only see my iMac. I get a "can't connect to win-based machine" error when I try to Remote Connect. The only thing I can think is that using the same gateway is somehow messing things up? I've had two techs try to figure this out and they're both stumped.I was maybe thinking that since both comps are going out the same gateway that I should try anc configure the iMac to try and RDC on a different port, since maybe the iMac is listening on 3389 and sending the RDC back to itself?

I have set up a home network some time ago, using a 4-port wired router. All four ports are in use, one of which by my own desktop computer running Windows XP Home, SP3.I recently received a new laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit). Because I can't afford a wireless router at the moment, I've been trying to set up my Windows XP computer as a wireless access point (using a Wireless LAN PCI card), so I can connect my laptop to it and share my internet connection. However, when I try to set up an ad hoc network on my XP computer, it doesn't show up in the list of available networks on my laptop, though it does show up on the XP computer, with the message that it's waiting for other computers to join. The same thing happens the other way around. When I try setting up an ad hoc network on my laptop, it doesn't show up on my desktop computer.

We have a WRSV4400N installed as our primary NAT Firewall. It is configured to allow Windows VPN connections to our server residing on the Internal Network Domain - this works fine.Problem is that even though the remote VPN client can open shares, browse the internal network, and resolve computer names fine with DNS, but... Remote Desktop will not connect using the VPN tunnel. We need this to work... I spent several hours with your support people when installing this router a year ago and got nowhere. And everythung else works fine.I am using Windows server-based VPN because your VPN Clint didn't work ata ll either. Can you perhaps give me a list of configuration settings to check?

I recently purchased (2) DIR-655 routers; one for home and one for the office. Both are connected to the 'net through CenturyLink DSL via a Zyxel 660 modem.I am switching from a Cisco/Linksys WRT54G home and a Trendnet TEW432BRP at the office. I wanted to get up to N and consolidate to a single hardware type. The 655 came highly recommended, and the price was right at $75.My goal is to utilize RDP (Windows Remote Desktop) between the two points and from other points inbound to either 655. The first hurdle was that the Xyxel modem, by default, blocks just about everything inbound with no hope of opening the ports. The only viable solution was to bridge the modem and allow the 655 to act as DHCP. Done. The modem now should not even have its own IP address, and should completely bypass all of the built-in firewalls, etc. As soon as I went into bridged and forwarded the ports in the router we were in business (though I still can't seem to log in to RDP, the ports are verified open).
