how to network my Windows Vista Gateway notebook to my Dell Desktop Windows XP? They were networked by a friend but when the motherboard was replaced on the desktop the notebook will not print from another room "wirelessly" as in the past.

When I manually add an IP and DNS addresses I can't get online also. I have removed my security software (webroot) and have disabled Windows Firewall.The same ethernet connection works on another one of my computers fine.

The desktop can see the notebook (shared folders), but the notebook cannot see the desktop. I cannot now generate a network map (I could earlier today), due to an "incompatible device".
There are also wireless connections but currently I don't use them. Both machines are on the same-named connection. Homegroup doesn't work at all on either computer.
I would really like to print from the notebook. All the printers are wired into the desktop. All are shared. Yesterday I could print from the notebook. On occasion, the homegroup shows both computers but hasn't for a while. In File Explorer, on the notebook, not even the notebook appears under the Network icon.

All other devices in my house are getting a perfect signal from the network but my computer either can't find it, or only has 1 green bar and says it cannot connect. I've tried a system restore, I've tried to troubleshoot on my computer and can't figure it out. The weird thing is it is picking up other wireless signals fine (like my neighbors, ect) but just not my home one. Again, it was working one minute, then simply stopped working and hasn't been able to connect at all.

All attempts to access the network fail (ping, local shares, http) and other machines cannot access this one. Network & Sharing Center shows a fault between the Home Network and the internet, however I am unable to Ping or be Pinged by other computers on the Home Network. Other machines on the network are working fine both wired and wireless, although the machine in question is wired only (no wireless NIC).
The following items have been attempted, some many times, in no particular order, all producing no change in symptoms (not a complete list).

Cold boot.
Last known good.
Safe mode with networking support.

I am passing my computer on to a family member and wanted to give them a fresh install, so I used the Windows Vista (32-bit SP1) disc that came with the laptop and reinstalled Vista on the computer. Everything worked fine until I wanted to connect to the internet, then Windows said that there were no networks available. When I selected "Why can't windows find any networks" it said that "This computer does not have a wireless network adapter installed and configured". I put in the Dell Driver's and Utilities CD that came with the computer and installed the drivers that seemed related to networks or communications, but the problem persists. I'm assuming it is some sort of driver issue (as the computer was using wireless internet before the reformat (just hours ago) and so the device itself seems to be working.

Following the directions of a Dell technician while trying to resolve a separate problem, I deleted the partitions on my hard drive and manually reinstalled both Vista and all the drivers that were on the Dell CD that came with my laptop. This has only occurred over the last 24 hours and is frustrating. I've read some other recent posts and have gone back and done the System Restore to before the installation of Windows Updates a day or so ago and that has worked twice today. But I'm not a PC expert and I would like to know how I could resolve this issue permanently without having to undo the updates with System Restore every time I power up and log in. So, like any normal and quite capable PC user, I went to the Dell site and entered the Service Tag. So far so good. However, no driver to be found for my Wireless component. Believe me, I attempted to install ALL Communication and Network drivers available. The message I got in the wizard was always "Installation not possible. Please contact your administrator". I tried to phone, got stuck in a waiting line for 11 minutes 35 seconds, which I mentioned before ripped me off for €10 and then the line went dead. All mails have been so far left unanswered. We recently had a big storm and lost internet connection to our house. Whilst internet connection has since been restored I've noticed that there are now orange lights above the port where the ethernet cable connected to on our notebook. I also cannot get internet connection using the ethernet cable. Does this mean my internal modem has blown? I can use the wireless modem with no problems.
If the modem has blown, how much are they usually to replace and is it relatively easy? I have a Inspiron 1525 Notebook.

I know it has 2 broadcom on-board NIC's and they work fine in Windows 7 so I feel I should be able to find drives for Vista bus 64. I tried downloading the drivers from the dell site and they turned out to be drives for server 2003 and 2k8, and wouldn't work with Vista.
how to identify the chipset of the onboard NIC's so I can do a better search for the drivers? I tried running Belarc advisor which usually gives pretty detailed info but it didn't even mention the broadcom's.

I'm assuming this is possible? It is my understanding that I don't need to make any changes with my wired desktop, other than to use it when making the router changes?
