Wireless Versus Ethernet / Does Ethernet Have Less Ping

Jun 11, 2012

I just got a new Xbox today, and use the integrated WiFi card. I was lagging like Crysis 2 on a 6800 GT (forget it). I just got a CAT .5 cable, and plugged it into modem/xbox and IDK... it works, I'm online, but basically my question is:Does ethernet connections have less ping (better) than wireless connections? This is with the Xbox 360 Slim. I know it improves upload, and download, but what about ping?

Ethernet Versus Serial Interfaces Work?

Dec 6, 2011

I know serial interfaces are called that because they put bits on the wire serially - i.e. one bit at a time. If that's the case for serial interfaces, how do other kinds of interfaces, such as Ethernet interfaces, put bits on the wire? Do they somehow put more than one bit on the wire at a time? I assume it's a faster process, but how so?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 892W / LAN Versus WAN Ethernet

Feb 14, 2012

I own a Cisco 892W router. The router has 2 WAN ports and 8 switch ports. Now I know -

-WAN ports can create sub interfaces, assigne IPs, cannot be assigned to a VLAN - sounds very much like a routing port. (sh interface gives - Hardware is PQII_PRO_UEC)

-Switch ports are for VLAN assignment, trunking, IP assigment etc,. (sh interface gives Hardware is Fast Ethernet)

I know they are different but at the same time confuced what the difference are? I also know on some 3xxx series switchs you could say "no switchport" and translate a switch port to a layer 3 port. But on 892W you can't do this? Struggeling to understand the difference.

Cannot Ping Modem Even Connected Via Ethernet Cable

Apr 22, 2011

A friend recently re-installed windows XP on their HP Laptop. They were connected wirelessly with a Linsys router (model wrt54g.1) and an RCA Cable Modem. The Cable ISP can ping the modem and gave me the IP address over the phone. I cannot ping the modem even when I take the router out of the loop. The network card (i1394) in the Laptop is functioning normally and I can see traffic on the modem (both the Cable Internet light and the PC activity light are flashing green) the ethernet port on the laptop is also flashing (amber). However I cannot reach the internet and cannot even ping the modem. The modem is brand new..

Realtek RTL8168D/8111D PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC Won't Detect Ethernet Cable?

Aug 8, 2012

I am having a problem with my Realtek RTL8168D/8111D PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC. It is not detecting my ethernet cable, and thus leaving me without internet on my desktop, after i updated its driver. The cable is not the problem as I have tested the cable with my laptop. I tried rolling back drivers, doing system restore and removing drivers with driversweeper and letting windows install the drivers again. However, none of these worked for me. I doubt the NIC is faulty as it was working before i updated the drivers. I am using windows 7 home premium 64-bit.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6500 Ethernet Sub-interfaces Over Metro Ethernet

Feb 20, 2012

I curently have 2 Data centers connected with a Metro Ethernet Connection.  Each Data Center has 6500 with Sup720s.  The Metro Ethernet connection is currently conected by a L3 routed interface. I now need to enable VRFs between the locations and want to determine the best way to adjust the Mero.  I was considering adjusting the routed interface to use Ethernet sub-interfaces.  Each VRF would be given a different subinterface over the Metro Ethernet connection.  I have done this on internal LAN connections but am concerned about exteding across data centers over Metro E.

Ethernet Port Doesn't Recognize Any Ethernet Cord

I've had trouble connecting to my own internet and have no wireless. I'm using my neighbor's wireless and it's really slowing her's down. I've tried restarting my laptop (it usually works) and then reinstalled the device under "device manager". Lenovo H430 Windows 7 PC - High Ping On Direct Ethernet Connection?

Sep 4, 2012

I bought new Lenovo IdeaCentre H430 pc and I'm having problem with high pings. Windows 7 with on-board realtek NIC. Fresh install, fully updated, drivers installed from included CD. When I start pinging router (direct 1Gb ethernet connection, 1 hop), pings start at <1ms (which is fine) and after a while they jump to 300-1000ms.

I loaded up live ubuntu to test if the problem might be in HW. It's not, in ubuntu pings were always <1ms.I also noticed that when I start using connection somehow, pings go down to 1ms, but go back up when I stop using it (tested by accessing live camera feed on LAN).

Power Options set to max performance. I disabled Interrupt Moderation on the NIC, didn't work.I tested it in the safe mode with networking, same problem there.

It slows down our client-server based programs, what's causing it. All I could google up was that disabling Interrupt Moderation would work, it didn't though.Computer is giving high pings to router when idle and normal pings when network is under load, it slows down our software significantly.

Ethernet Port Not Recognizing Ethernet Cable?

Apr 30, 2011

I have a Dell XPS M1530 with Vista 32 bit. When i plug in a cable i get nothing, no error, and the comp does not recognize that a cable has been plugged in. I think that this started after my Hard drive failed and Dell replaced it but i'm not positive. No errors (? or !) in Device Manager and I can't find the Marvell 88E80XX 10/100 Ethernet Controller in device manager. I have attempted to Reinstall the drivers. The wireless is still working. I have one Light to the right of the port that is on all the time solid but no flashing with the cable in or out.

we have the following setup for our network :

UserNetwork - ASA5550 - WAN Router 2911 - ISP Netowrk - Branch Routers 877s / 1941s

Since last week we started noticing this problem that the branch users started to complain of slow application response.. After verifying it with the ISP and middle network we noticed that if i ping from my machine (ie usernetwork) to the WAN Router interface (facing the ASA) , i get time outs..  which is strange cause this is directly connected to it via ethernet cable.

Secondly, could a splitter such as >> this one << do the job? I'm guessing this basically split a single 4-pair ethernet connection into two 2-pair ethernet connections.

Enterprise Media Converters For Coax To Ethernet And Ethernet To Coax?

To each location we currently have fiber for data (1Gbps) and fiber to transport our TV channels. Am am looking for a device that can take in our TV channels on coax and give me an rj45 ethernet connection so I can plug the unit into a data switch to use our data fiber for everything (if I need 10 units at the central site to do this, that is fine).taking the ethernet back to coax to distribute TV to all of the TVs in the building. This would eliminate me 10 point to point fiber links.

As you can see, i have three TV ports and one PC port. All of it is being used. One of the TV ports goes trough the wall too a exit in my wall, and goes into my TV Router as seen on the image below.

Add Ethernet Router To Wireless Network

Jul 7, 2011

I got a device (Airave) from my wireless phone carrier (Sprint) that's supposed to boost the Sprint signal that I get in the house (I get no signal inside at all). The Airave is supposed to plug in directly to the DSL modem. The problem is that I only have one outlet on the back of the DSL modem (an older unit, provided by Windstream). Before I screwed it up it was set up as follows: DSL Modem>Linksys Wireless Router>and then connected to the Linksys via ethernet were a desktop computer and a hardwired older Buffalo wireless router (to extend the wireless network), and various wireless devices as needed (smart phones, laptops, Kindle, etc.). So, I purchased an ethernet router (not a switch) to connect to the DSL modem to give me more ports. (There are also 2 LAN ports on the back of the Airave, unused for now.) The current order of devices is DSL Modem>ethernet router>and coming out of the ethernet router are the desktop computer, the wireless router, the Airave, and a spare ethernet cable to hook up to the laptop since the wireless isn't available.

And now the wireless is not working. Everything plugged into the ethernet router works, I can get out to the Web, if I'm hard-wired.So, two questions, really:

1. should I have gotten a switch, and

2. if not, what order should these items be connected to each other? Both the Linksys wireless router and the ethernet router have the same IP address--which may be significant as well.

Using Ethernet Input Instead Of DSL For A Wireless Router?

I can connect to the internet through the router but it's only allowing one device to be connected at once and the router is saying "no connection" even though I can connect through it. does this mean it's working as a switch at the moment, right? Would it be possible to make it work as a router so all my devices can work simultaneously and get the wifi to work?

Wireless To Ethernet Signal Conversion?

I need to get a connection through a 3 storie structure.

On each floor, I have a cluster of servers set up. Conventionally, I would thread cat6 cables through the building but due to various reasons I cannot do that.

On the ground floor there are 2 ground lines which project a wireless signal.

I'm wondering, is there some way I can convert the wireless signal into an ethernet line? Perhaps through some kind of interfaced adapter. I've thought of buying a throwaway laptop and bridging the connections manually but I'd prefer to avoid that option if there are feasiable alternatives.
