Linksys Wireless Router :: Wrt54g - Setting Up Wifi Network?
Apr 27, 2013
I have the following equipment
E2500 wireless N router (2 of these)
WRT54g router (B/G)
WAP54g access point (B/G)
I am planning to set up a wi-fi network for a single story motel. It is C-shaped; about 300 feet along the longest side with "legs" of 120 and 70 feet. I have included a diagram that I drew for the person that will install it. Until now I have only used that single WRT54g in the office for the entire property and it covers about half the property (left side) but not well and with a dead spot in the top left because of too many walls to go through.
My plan starts in the office (bottom left) with a WRT54g connected to the DSL modem as it always was. That would be connected to one of the E2500s in the middle so it can cover the most area. From there two others would shoot out to each corner (the other E2500 and the WAP54g). They will all be wired together with Cat 5e "riser cable". The routers will be placed in a wide open attic.
1. Is this is a good plan for the size of property? I have heard that N routers have a range of 150ft in every direction so that's why I'm putting one in the middle. Keep in mind that while the attic is open and wood constructed, the walls between rooms are concrete firewall and they haven't been wi-fi friendly. Hopefully putting them in the attic takes care of this.
2. Does starting with a B/G router at the modem mean the N routers will revert to B/G?
3. What are the main settings I need to know about? What "mode" does each need to be set to? Do they need different default gateways?
Can I use the same password/security for all of them? Should I use the same SSID for all?

I have a WRT54G that has served us well for several years, but I needed a network connection in another part of the house, both wired for TV, and wireless for downstairs. So I ran an ethernet cable through the house and connected it to my new E1200. It's connected to Port 1, not the Internet port. The TV plugs into Port 2, and my Apple TV to port 3. So far so good, TV and Apple TV appear to work fine. Wireless is where I'm having problems, the wireless signals between the two routers appear on Wifi Analyzer I'm using. Both appear strong in signal for a second, then they disappear, then they appear again for a second, then they disappear. So the wifi's signals appear, then disappear and this cycle continues.
The WRT54G is setup with DHCP, channel 6.
IP Address: 192.168.1.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 DHCP Server: Enabled Start IP Address: 192.168.1.100 End IP Address: 192.168.1.149
The E1200 DHCP is disabled, channel 11, 20mhz.
Router IP Address: 192.168.1.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 DHCP Server: Disabled Start IP Address: 192.168.1.1 (DHCP disabled) End IP Address: 192.168.1.50 (DHCP is disabled)
I've tried both routers named the same, and then tried 2 different names. I've rebooted them as well after making changes.

We just moved into a new apartment. In our old place, we had Comcast cable internet with a modem and our wireless router worked fine. Now with Hotwire, we can't get the router to work. Here are the details:
-We can plug our computer directly into the ethernet cable outlet in the wall and it connects.
-We didn't get a modem from Hotwire.
-Wireless router: Linksys WRT54G
We've tried already to change router back to default factory settings. Didn't work. We reset our passwords for the router. Didn't work. Tried to put in the MAC address of the computer and it didn't seem to work. We originally were able to connect a computer to the internet through the router sometimes but just the wireless section didn't work.

Lately, I upgrade the firmware on my router. A linksys WRT54G. In order to access the router I had to do a manual reset to factory settings. Post upgrade, for some reason I couldn't access the internet. I tried everything for hours and finally through sheer luck of unplugging every cable and ever power lead and plugging it back in, it started working.
However, lately I've found that the only computer connected to the internet via eathernet cable is loosing connection intermittently. Also we seem to get constant huge spikes in latency and very inconsistent speed. Unplugging the router and plugging it back in again seems to solve this problem temporarily, but requires toggling of power multiple times a day. Also I had what I believe was an IP address conflict, or lack of an IP address once, but using the windows troubleshoot errors fixed that by resetting my wireless network card. (This was on a 2nd machine)

I am trying to connect a myTouchQ (t-mobile) through my WRT54G. The android shows that I'm connected and have a good signal, but I can't access the internet or any data. When I turn off the wi-fi connection, I can access through the 4G network. My provider is Cox Cable. I've unplugged the modem and the router for 30 seconds and even reset the security.

My wrt54g (firmware old - v1.00.6) has run fine for years until my daughter got a laptop with win7. All my other systems still run XP or win2k. I only run wireless with her win7 and one netbook with xp, all the other connections are wired.
Going to speedtest.net and after I reset (pull power) the router, I get 20Mbps download. After the win7 wifi runs for a bit, download speed drops to 2 Mbps or less. It seems to be after she goes to you tube and starts watching videos. If I reset again, it immediately goes back to the full speed of 20. I measure this after she's taken her laptop off the network. So, whatever her win7 is doing, it stays that way after she disconnects (i.e. slow on my other systems) until the reset. I also measured the speed on her win7 system and it also would slow there as well and speed up after a reset (for a while).

I am having problems with connectivity and my iPhone 5. The Wi-Fi is okay in some parts of my home network, however in others it is abysmmal. When I bring my computer to the places where the iPhone has problems with signal strength/staying connected the computers have full or almost full strength and no problems. I upgraded firmware for the router, spoke with applecare, have reset the router multiple times, and have been trying different channels. I had the phone in with the Apple store where they concluded nothing seems wrong with the hardware. The phone doesn't seem to have problems like this on other wifi networks I have tried. Using a speed test on the iPhone at home in the low connectivity areas results in horrendously poor latency numbers.

DSL modem works fine when connected directly to computer. No internet output from WRT54G wired or wireless, but wireless network is recognized by computer, just no internet. I did a reset and installed the latest firmware, then I ran thru the setup CD that came withe the router, and the internet test said no internet connection was available. Cables are fine, connector innards look clean.

My WRT54G lost the WiFi connection. I can get the internet if I connect the cable from my modem to my computer but my wireless connection is gone. So it's an issue with the router or settings. I called Linksys and was told the settings would have to be reset/updated. I was told there would e a fee. I did not want to pay a fee. I'd like to try to resolve myself.
I have a Mac laptop. Verizon ISP.

I recently bought the top end ea4500 hoping its "high end" claims would get a better wifi signal in my bedroom(on my iphone 4s) than what i was getting with my WRT54G.The end result is it constantly drops signal completely or shows my network but when I try to connect says "cannot connect to wireless network" even though it's staring me right in the face. When I hook my WRT54G up, I get a signal.. all be it weak, but at least it doesn't drop out on me.Did I just waste almost $200 on a high end router that can't push a signal out stronger than my almost 7 year old WRT54G? or am i missing some setting that will make this EA4500 worth its claims? settings info:everything is pretty much on "default" aside from the SSIDs for the different bands and the corresponding WPA passwords.
also another problem, it seems like the router itself craps out every 60-120 minutes, no leds lit up on the router and my modem (Cisco DCP3010) shows no "link". Yet when hooked directly to the PC there is a "link", so pretty sure its the router and not the modem.

I have both the WRT54G and a E1000 wireless routers and this problem is occurring for both of them.I use AT&T DSL and the speeds are fine when it is :
1. Not plugged into router
2. Wireless Network Mode is disabled through the router configuration page, having all devices wired.
However when wireless network mode is enabled, speeds drop significantly, 15~17 ms ping goes to 250~800 ping, and download speeds are way lower also. When the router is reset, the regular speeds will return for maybe 30 seconds to 1 minute, then it'll drop back down. I'm positive there's no outsiders connected to my network and this problem still occurs, only when the router is giving out wireless signals. Sometimes the problem randomly goes away for a while but it will always come back. I've tried many things, firmware upgrades, factory restore, none of them seem to work, the only solution so far has been to disabling it, but I need it to be on as there are other devices in other rooms of the house that need WiFi to connect to the internet.

Every night I turn everything off via power strip, including the router. Before I turn off the router, my roku connection is good.In the morning, the roku will work for about 20 minutes, then disconnects, and then I'm unable to find the router.I'll then need to reset my router's settings (I have the WRT54GS), and then uplug, and replug the router. It's important that I unplug the router every night. Is there a way to configure the settings so I don't have to reconfigure the settings every morning?

I recently updated my WRT54G V3 to frimware 4.21.5 and now get regular wireless connection issues. The wired connection never has any problem (can connect to the router and the internet), but none of the wireless devices can see either.
The problem happens every couple of days, and cycling the power seems to be the only fix. When the problem does occur, the wireless devices don't even see the broadcasted SSID. But cycling the WRT54G's power fixes that.
I've gotten a few suggestions to do a "30-30-30" reset, but can't find exactly what that entails.

I inserted the installation disc and started going through the process, but my hard drive on my MacBook so I couldn't finish setting up the router. I have borrowed someones PC laptop, but it doesn't have a CD drive. Is there any way I can set up the router on line or any other way? Will the set up work for Macs and PC's?

setting up my new WRT54GL.this is my first encounter with a wireless router, though I've had 3 previous Linksys (hardwired) routers.I have to say, given that they give virtually no Mac support, it was a breeze….just plugged it in to my cable modem and my laptop and - boom - on the net on my first try!I'm able to access the router via it's web-based system and can now "tweak" with settings, but I'm running in to a lot of "tweakable" settings that I'm not familiar with.
First my setup. I have; (a.) 3 desktop Macs and a Samsung TV hardwired to the four Ethernet ports and (b.) my Mac laptop accessing the router via Airport Extreme wifi. All are happily accessing the web.But I realize that the reason that "(b.)" is accessing the web is that I've changed no default settings in the router and, not only can *I* access the router via wifi, but probably anyone driving down the road or sitting out in front of my house can access the web via my wifi. And I'd like to change that.I'm *guessing* that the router settings i need to change lie in the "Wireless Security" area of the router? And it's here that I'm running in to a lot of "tweakable" settings that I don't understand. But let me give an example of what I would *like* to accomplish.
Let's say that there are 3 different laptops…."A", "B" and "C". All 3 are Macs and running Airport Extreme. Now, "A" is my laptop, sitting here on my desk next to the router. As i leave Airport always turned on, I want "A" to *always* have access to the routers wifi *without* having to enter a username/password, i.e. when i turn "A" on, it's wired. Now "B" might be the laptop of a friend who happens by the house and need access. They would need to find my network on their laptop and then i would need to give them a password to let them get on .And finally, "C" is the guy I don't know out in the street whom I want to *never* have access to my network. So my question then is, can I accomplish this by changing settings in "Wireless Security" on my router and how/what would I change?

I am in a situation where I share internet access with roommates. We have a Gateway which is conected to the provider and which delivers ethernet and WiFi signal.
In order to isolate myself from my roomates and to protect my network connection, both wired and WiFi, I would like to plug in the Ethernet cable I get from the Gateway to my router, and then configure my router's firewall and WiFi enctryption to maximize my safety.
However, I am having some problems. I have already configured the router as "router" and not "Gateway" and I am trying to assign it an IP address different from the default one, which is the one the gateway has, and a ranger of DHCP IP's, also different from those of the Gateway. In other words, 192.1681.N.1 for the router and start from there.

I recently had trouble connection to my Linksys WRT54G router. However, in this process I had to create a couple of new profiles/networks/SSID or whatever they are called. I now have one functioning network, but my router is still broadcasting the other two networks. How can I get my router to only broadcast the one network, I am currently using? I erased them from Vista, so that my own computer does not automatically log on to the, but that is clearly not enough. Since one of the networks is not secured with a password (dont ask why), my concern is that my neighbours can access it. BTW, I am using Windows Vista on a Toshiba Satelite A200.

- Will need this secondary router to connect to the existing wireless network Router A wirelessly.
- Will need to have internet access.
- Will need to have the wired ports to have internet access as well. Needed to connect the Home A / V receiver to update A / V firmware.

Yesterday i was playing online on my Xbox 360, and was disconnected from the internet. I came downstairs to reset router/modem, once doing so i went into the router settings for my Linksys WRT54G. My modem by default uses the 192.168.1.1, so my router was 192.168.2.1... So i powercycle, log into router settings through 192.168.2.1 and start setting up my port forwarding for the xbox ports. Saved Settings, and the page would not load to say "Settings Saved". Closed the window and now my pc says no internet connection. I had to create a VPN broadband connection to even use the internet on my pc. I can no longer log into 192.168.2.1 for my router, nor can i access 192.168.1.1 to even get into my modem settings.. I'm using windows 7, and the automatic troubleshooting guide tells me to powercycle my modem. My xbox can still see my wireless network "linksys" but will not connect to it, even with the VPN connection i am still hooked though my router and modem.. Im afraid that my router just out of nowhere "died"..

I have been using this router fine for a year now. Now I can only get on the internet if I am directly plugged into the modem. It says I have limited connectivity. My ISP is Comcast. I have tried resetting the router with no luck. I have tried to update the drivers but I cannot even log into 192.168.1.1. I am in dire need of the wireless cpability. When I go to the run command and type ipconfig it tells me I have no default gateway.

So I have a WRT54G router since a couple of years now. Laptop (Win7 64bit), ipod, ipad, phones can connect to it without a problem, but new computer (Win7 64bit) can't. I can connect the PC via ethernet without a problem though.
I powercycled my devices, I changed broadcasting options off and then back on, changed my security mode, tried the MAC Cloning (after doing the MAC Cloning, I lost internet connectivity even through ethernet), resetted my security settings, changed SSID, I'm broadcasting through channel 11 2.462. I also tried deleting the HomeGroup
Important fact: the network is in the list of available wireless network, but Signal Strength is No Signal and I can't connect to it. My network adapter is ASUS 802.11n Wireless LAN Card, drivers are up to date. I've upgraded to the latest router firmware.
