Laptop has 2 ethernet ports and receives the internet via one of those Ethernet ports. Can I plug a ethernet lead from my spare port on my laptop to a wireless router and create a wireless network (via the internet from my laptop)? Is this possible and how do I do it ?

We just got a new replacement router at our home. We had a 2wire 2701 HG-S (we got this for free when we signed up for our DSL service) and now replaced it with a Netgear N300 Work and Play model. I want to know if we can set up the 2wire router as another access point to improve our wireless signal range. Right now we have a good signal upstairs (where the Netgear router is located), but not the best signal downstairs. I am able to run an Ethernet cord from the Netgear router downstairs to the 2wire if necessary, if it will improve our WiFi signal. Both of these routers are router/modem combos that include the DSL modem, in addition to wireless access point btw. Is this even possible to do? Would it require me to install a custom firmware onto the 2wire router?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a few sites all running Cisco ASA 5510s. They all share the same asa (8.4(4)1) and asdm (6.4.9) version, but their configs differ significantly. I have a cold spare sitting in my office in the event we have a physical failure. Is there a quick and simple way I can load up multiple configs and then boot up the cold spare to then run the config from Site_A or Site_B? Just looking for a quick solution rather than doing a full restore should something fail spectacularly. Nice to say upon bootup, using confreg perhaps, to boot Site_A config rather than Site_C.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe school I work at upgraded to Cisco Catalyst 2960-S switches, all connected to each other via fiber. I am seeing a problem with one such connection. Cisco Network Assistant showed a "4-Warning" regarding the fiber link port: port was disabled because it was fluctuating between up and down too rapidly. Possible hardware problem, resolve and re-enable. (I'm paraphasing the message...it was 'acknowledged', and I can't bring it back up.)
This message was only showing on our "SV-Copy-Rm" switch's port 49. The other end, on "SV-Maint-Rm" port 49 showed a normal green link status.
Using Internet Explorer, I logged onto SV-Copy-Rm switch's Device Manager, and I first tried disabling/re-enabling port 49 on SV-Copy-Rm. It came back up blinking yellow and showing "port has bad link" when I cursor hovered over port 49. This continued for a few minutes, followed by port 49 being disabled again.
The current thing I'm trying is swapping the connection on both ends to a spare pair of fibers. I'm pretty certain I've swapped to the same pair on both ends, however, now neither switch shows an active link. I've disabled/enabled the ports on both ends, but still no link.
Question: How do I re-establish the above link? (The active connection has 'fallen back' to the designated ethernet Cat 5e connection and is currently running with that connection.)
I am connected directly to my modem. My isp is Verizon fios. my internet randomly freezes for a couple of seconds sometimes. mostly when im in game and on ventrilo i notice it. any idea why its really frustrating when im in game cuz i freeze and come back dead.

My phone company has been out here and has done tests, and changed out my wireless modem with a new one, switched me to a new high speed port.. cleaned up the cables outside my house.. installed a new jack.. and we have yet to solve this intermittent dropping and reconnecting... I am starting to wonder, if not anything else with my outside line.. is there something else causing the problem. I switched my channel from 11 to 9.. *my neighbor is on channel 11* thought maybe his was interfering with mine .I am using WPA, I have disabled the power adapter from "saving power" in the adapter settings..
When the internet does drop off the DSL light on the modem goes out, and then comes back on..its not blinking off and on, just off.. then waits.. then reconnects to the net, it's almost like it's refreshing or something every couple of minutes.The modem is a Siemens Speedstream 6520
my ping spikes to 1k+ all the time, making online games pretty much unplayable. Sometimes I'll lag up to 3k ms and by the time my ping is back to normal, the game is so behind it is messed up forever.I've looked online for days trying to find solutions, and trying all kinds of things. The problem started after i reinstalled windows xp (it actually started right after my power flickered after i reinstalled, but i think that may be coincidence. I'm not sure though.). I've reformatted since then, but the problem still persists.I think the problem might be WZC, but when I try stopping the program like other people have done, my wireless network disconnects pretty soon after. I've also tried just using the intel software, but that didn't work either. It was fine for a while last night after I changed to the intel software, but after maybe an hour or so it went back to lagging.I have Intel PROSet Wifi agn 5100 as my network card. I'm on a laptop. I also tried doing a ping test in command on my mom's laptop, and it never spiked like mine. Is my network card maybe just too old? I got the laptop almost 4 years ago.

I originally thought the issue was with my router, however I'm beginning to think it's an issue involving the modem. I've tried two different routers and this happens on both. My main router is a D-Link WBR-1310 (crap I know but it was free) and has lasted for years, and my modem is a Toshiba PCX2500 from Time Warner Cable. View 5 Replies View RelatedI am currently using a DIR-655 for the home wireless network.DSL into a 2-Wire home portal (not wireless) and ethernet into the DIR-655.I need to connect a number of wired devices in a couple of different rooms. Some streaming HDTV content to other devices in other rooms. I'm thinking of the following:
-DIR-655 routing between the DSL subnet to the internet, the 2.4GHz wireless and a couple of wired devices.
-DAP-1522 routing between the 2.4GHz wireless, 5GHz wireless, and a few wired devices.
-DAP-1522 bridging between the 5GHz wireless and a few wired devices.
All devices will/may need internet access.HDTV content would be between wired devices and only over the 5GHz wireless (no HDTV to/from internet).Is the DAP-1522 the right device(s) for this?
How can we host 300+ secure (https) websites using a couple of public IP's on an ASA5520 with AIP SSM-20 and with as few certificates as possible?
Summary of set-up:
We currently host a number of websites using an ASA5520 and use host headers, so have 6 servers with around 40 hosted URL's. The number of websites is due to double very soon and we will need to use more of our public IP's. We can see that we will will run out of public IP's very soon especially as there is a project in the pipeline that has a likely requirement to host an additional 200+ websites.
Each of these websites are required to use https and therefore each must have a certificate which will be very expensive. PCI DSS (payment card industry data security standard) is causing us issues because we had hoped to post the certificates on the firewall (one for each physical server) and then run the data UN-encrypted from the firewall to the relevant web servers, so that we could use one certificate for lots of websites and therefore reduce our certificate costs, however is not best practice to do this due to the data being unencrypted within the firewall and on the DMZ network and therefore potentially open to compromise. I doubt that we could install 200+ certificates on a 5520 and then re-encrypt the data to the web servers especially seeing as we also have an IPS card that is already running at around 70-80% util due to the performance overhead.
BTW - We also have an in-line Breach WAF which will be required to inspect the packets (certificates to be installed on the WAF to allow this).
I have noticed that in my router log that the router opes a port automatically without any human interaction and after some the time router closes the port again.Here is the log file of my router that opens the port and close it after a couple of hours.

I have a Linsys E3200 router for almost a year. It's been working fine until recently. It kept losing internet connection every a couple hours or even shorter. I have to power cycle the router in order to make it to work. However, sometimes that won't work either. I also tried to restore the router to the factory default but that doesn't seem to work.
I have updated the router with the latest firmware (1.04). I am using a cable connection and it never gives me any problem if I just connect my computer to it. I also test my network with another old netgear router that works just fine.

I have a problem with an internet connection with a customer.They have a Zyxel 660 in bridge mode and the public ip is delivered to the eth0/0 outside interface of a 5505 ASA.They lose internet connectivity a couple of times per hour. What solves the problem immediately is disconnecting the ethernet cable from the eth0/0 and then directly plugging it back. Then it runs for 20-30 minutes or so.The isp doesnt't notice any errors on the dsl connection, only that they cannot ping the outside interface from time to time (duhhh)However, yesterday, when problem appeared for first time , I noticed that this Zyxel was very hot since it was placed on top of the ASA. Now it is set apart.In the meantime I already replaced all cables, but I think it's the Zyxel so I urged that the ISP send a new Zyxel.Though it sounds strange. [code]
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am testing on lab equipment (2 Catalyst 3550 and 1 Catalyst 3560) HSRP version 1 and 2.I successfully created a load balancing between the two Catalyst 3550 on a couple of vlans (11 and 12) on ver 1
now, just adding the command "standby xx version 2" my hosts on the 2 vlans are completely unable to ping the virtual IP def. gw on debugging i checked that msgs are exchangedthe two cat 3550 are seeing each other on HSRP (active / standby roles)the real ip addresses are pingable rebooted the swiches (just as a last resort try)deleted arp chache on hostsremoved the auth on hsrp all of this no effect.
i also tried to modify the priority on the cat 3560 (before he was on both vlans in standby) to make it the active one and with the same config it worked flawlessly.

On C6500 series I have to create a separate community to send a SNMP trafic for a couple of gig interfaces.The user that will collect these informations has a Monitoring server and is only interested in monitoring traffic on those link and maybe pps.
I understood to create a an ACL pointing to his IP of the server, and that create a community and associate this access list with that community. Those commands I have, but I need to send the user the MIBs or other relevant info on how to collect and forbid everything else but thos interfaces.Do I need to give the SNMP HOST command and associate with this community after that.

In my webdmz I use 2 ACE 4710 proxys in FT mode. I used a layer 2 switch to connect firewall and proxys together.
I would like to eliminate this switch if possible..and connect both 4710's (layer 2) direct to firewall.If I could make gi0/2 - 4 part of the same vlan, then I would be good to go.

I want to do the same but wirelessly. I have an ASUS RT-N10 LX wi-fi router - and connected the cable from the provider to the WAN slot on the router.
