Windows Xp And Wifi Tethering?
Jan 26, 2011
My friend has a laptop with windows xp and is trying to access the Internet via wifi tethering with his phone. The laptop will connect to the network created by the tethering app and will let me access the net for about 5 - 10 mins. Then without warning I can't browse websites or download files but am still connected to the network. I can connect to the network with another laptop for as long as I want and the net works fine. It is a peer to peer network.

I have a laptop running Windows XP Service Pack 3. There is a CentOS 6.0 desktop next to it. The Windows XP laptop has a Wi-Fi card, and it has Internet access. The CentOS computer does not have a Wi-Fi card or Internet access.
I don't want to purchase a wireless NIC for the desktop. What are the steps I can do to get an Internet connection from my Windows XP laptop to the CentOS desktop?

I have seen examples to set up ad hoc so m laptop can host wireless for android and wifiCam however i have routerA, RouterB, and pocket stick.when connected to routerA my laptop connects to RouterA which goes to network, so does android,RouterB has no WAN to connect to so i use laptop to pocket stick, which is where i need ad hoc to connect android to pocket stick, I dont want to use android sim network. and cam needs to have local,I wonder is there a way to make my laptop smart so it hosts hoc by default and maybe feeds WAN to RouterB, unless it is able to find RouterA ?

Unfortunately, despite my best efforts to find a better alternative, where I live my only option for unlimited internet with any speed whatsoever is to tether my DROID DNA phone to my computer using the app PdaNet. I've been doing this for over a year now without any problems.I have an unlimited data plan through Verizon and although I only have 3G at my house, it is still far better than anything else I've found.
Recently I started playing the online game World of Warcraft. Obviously the speed isn't ideal, but it worked perfectly fine for about 3 weeks. One night the game started to get really slow and after a minute or two would freeze up entirely. When this happened, I would have an error message on my phone at the PdaNet screen that read "Communication with client has been broken." Despite restarting things, this continued to happen. I assumed that it was because the weather was bad outside, but the problem didn't go away the next day. When I noticed that my internet speed when browsing the web had slowed down as well I figured that although I supposedly have unlimited data, that Verizon must have slowed me down for crossing over a certain download barrier. I've heard that they do this.
So this went on for the next week until the first of the month when my data was reset through Verizon. Well I'm still having the same issue when trying to play the game. It will work alright for anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minutes, and then all of a sudden start to get slower and slower until it freezes completely and I have the "Communication with client has been broken" error screen on my phone. I'm not sure if my internet speed in general is back to normal or not because I haven't spent enough time online to know for sure, but at the moment it seems to be.

If I tether my computer to my phone and use the 3G networks IP address, trace the IP to my phone number if they really wanted to? Or am I completely anonymous because whatever tower I'm connected to, thats the designated IP for that tower and there could be dozens of people on that tower's IP as well?

I use a tethered iPhone to access the Internet. We live outside of the DSL service area so this is really the only high speed internet connection I have available.Unfortunately the "wireless hotspot" feature of the phone isn't very consistent. I can get all of my computers to connect to my phone this way, but the connection is constantly dropping, and I'm always having to reboot the phone to get the computers to pick it up again. The most reliable way to use the tethering is to just plug the phone in to whichever computer I happen to be using. This does create a problem, though. If I want to print to the network computer or access a file off of one of the other computers I have to manually connect to the wireless router, because that's the only way the computers can talk to each other. In the meantime, though, I can't use the internet because my computer thinks it needs to try to connect to the internet through the wireless router, and when it can't find the internet that way it just tells me there's no connection. Nevermind that my phone is still plugged in, for some reason it doesn't want to use that connection if it can see the router.

My laptop which runs under Windows XP cannot see the wireless router at work, though my colleagues who use other OSs can. Other colleagues with XP have the same problem.When the router is rebooted, I can sometimes see it and connect for a short time but then after a week or so, the laptop cannot see it (though it can see other networks). Sometimes, out of the blue I can see it and connect but I cannot acquire an IP address.I have updated drivers (though they are not recent, but they are all I and Windows can find).I don't have any problems connecting anywhere else (although that may because I only connect with router I do see, obviously).

I have a pretty new HP laptop Probook 4530s. It came with an absolute ton of bloatware and no matter how hard I try it seems to slow start up times and effect general performance. I thought I would download and reinstall an entirely clean version of Windows 7.I could not for the life of me get wifi to work afterwards. There are a load of drivers for wifi on the HP support website and I tried them all, not knowing which one was correct. No dice. The wifi card does not seem to show on device manager. It's like the system does not know the card is installed.There are some 'unknown device' errors on device manger so I assume that has something to do with it. The wifi card does show on bios, and after rolling back to the old bloatware system image, wifi is now back, so definately not a hardware problem.

I've finally made the jump into Ubuntu and put it on my laptop. I have never used Linux before so it will be a bit of a learning curve although it does look quite user friendly.
I have already connected my Ubuntu laptop to my wireless router so I have internet. I would just like to be able to access files on my PC and vice versa similar to Windows Homegroup but I have no idea how.
PC = Windows 7 Ultimate - Laptop = Latest version of Ubuntu (I think it's 11?)

I have this USB Wifi adapter: NETGEAR WNA3100 [URL] I just bought it and thought it would work, but apparently it is def a Windows 7 problem because I have tried it with these others USB adapters only. My main objective is to create a hotspot for the house wirefree and no triping etc etc
Airlink+ 802.11g 2.0 (old) Works with XP but not on W7 (blinks)
WifiMAX Dongle 802.11g 2.0 (also old) (Sometimes blinks at intervals)
TrendNET TEW-644UB (bought last year) (Light stays on/no longer blinks)
Netgear WNA3100 (arrived just a few hours ago) (I made it blink now with its software)
I have tried(netgear):
-rebooting
-installing/uninstalling drivers
-uninstalling itunes
-Using a W8 procedure for it
-tried using different software
-Some other stuff
I have not tried a HKEY codes for it My biggest problem is that the "Disabled" status is stuck and I cannot re-enable it. If there is a way to override this I would be happy to hear it. Using: Windows7 Ultimate Gigabyte Motherboard/AMD chipset For the only one that is enabled(Airlink) it has some funny stuff on the status like 412 Gbps and doesn't have ipv4/6 connectivity [URL]

My sister and brother live next door to each other and althought they both use my sisters wifi they want to be able to homegroup or network via wifi without either of them having to use the adsl cable from the router to their laptops.. I tried setting both computers up on a homegroup network but they cannot look at each others music and documents my sister has Win 7 64bit and my brother has Win vista 32 bit ? The win7 is in English so it does not seem to hard to find things. I downloaded for my sister -Advanced IPscanner - and Netcut but netcut does not seem to work on 64 bit and the IPscanner recognizes my brothers computer but will not shut it off - they wanted to be able to know when the other is online and also be able to cut one another off when they choose to.

I am trying to connect to the internet using both wifi and wired directly to the router and keep getting the same message "limited or no connectivity". It will see all the available wifi networks, and will even connect to the network, but no internet. I have used google and tried several solutions but to no avail. Also, just fyi, i currently have my desktop hardwired to router, and another laptop, ipad, ps3, wii, droid bionic and a couple of netbooks that all can connect to the router using wifi with no problem what so ever. I have also tried to connect to other networks with the same results. There are 2 network adapters, a broadcom netlink (tm) gigabit ethernet and a dell wireless 1397 wlan mini-card. Here is the ipconfig/all.

my machine is HP ProBook 4530s (bought 2 weeks ago) with Atheros AR9285 WiFi adapter. My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate x64. There is a public wireless network near my home which when I try to connect to I almost always get an "No Internet access" message and no connection. In the rare cases when I connect to the network it dissapears a few seconds after I manage to load a page. The reason why I'm writing about this is that I have another very old (4-5 years old) laptop - Asus with XP SP3 and Atheros 5006EG Wireless network adapter, which connects to this network very easily and with reasonable speeds. I have put the two computers next to each other and the old one connects with no problems, while the new, if finds the network (somethimes it doesn't show on the list of wireless networks or it shows with fewer bars), almost always gives the "No internet access" message and an occasional exclamation mark on WiFi network icon. I tried to read the descriptions of the two adapters online and as far as what I understand the new should be better in any way, but I am not familiar with the terminology, thats why i am starting this thread here.
My question is it possible my 5 years old laptop to have a stronger and better WiFi adapter than the new HP or is it a settings/software issue? If it is the latter, how can I fix it?
I have currently installed these drivers for my WiFi adapter - [URL]
One other thing is that when I bought the probook it came with Linux SUSE operating system and the signal was again weak. I am not familliar with Linux so I switched to Windows.
