Write To Nas Via Ethernet Slower Than Via Wifi
Aug 17, 2012
I have a Win7 64bit laptop connected to my home network by both 85 mps Netgear Powerline and wifi. On the network are mt BT Homehub router and an Iomega Home Media NAS. when trying to backup photo files (5+ mb) from laptop to NAS I find the write speed become so slow as to be unuseable via Ethernet.
Speeds (Mbps) obtained:
Write Read Connection
8.5 8.9 wifi
0.2 13.8 ethernet & wifi
0.2 14.5 ethernet
I have tried upgrading firmware (currently 2.040) but the NAS seems unwilling to do this. I have also reset the router -- all to no avail.

my linksys e1000 router compares pretty well to my modem when the Ethernet cable is hooked up. I get fast DL speeds above 50Mbps either way when the Ethernet cable is plugged into my computer. However, when I connect wirelessly, regardless of range I can't seem to DL any faster than 20Mbps. I went ahead and restored my factory defaults so that I could use Cicsco Connect and upgrade the firmware, but beyond that I don't know what settings to tweak.

I live in an apartment complex with a few other roommates. We each have an ethernet cable jack in our rooms, and we also have a wireless router located in one of my roommates' rooms that we all use for WIFI. when connected to only WIFI, my interenet connection is faster than using an ethernet cable? Our WIFI network displays a speed of 65Mbps, while the ethernet network shows a 10Mbps.

My computer worked fine on the eithernet, but I had to move it to a different room and now it won't recognize ANY WIFI connections. I know the wifi is working because I have laptops and phones connected to it. the computer is only 8 months old. It's an HP Pavillion AMD Phenom II 820 Quad-Core Processor, Windows 7 64 Bit, Wireless LAN 802.11b/g/n.

I can't seem to connect to the internet via the Ethernet port on my laptop, but the built-in Wi-Fi card works perfectly fine. I normally use Wi-Fi, as our signal is very strong, even if I go outside and up the road, I can still connect.
My issue is that although I don't need it, I'd like to setup Ethernet for the first time since installing Windows 7. I've had Windows 7 since April 2011, and prior to that I used Windows Vista. From memory, I don't think Vista had any problems with connecting via Ethernet back before I moved house, but this was over two years ago.
My laptop is an ASUS X58L, and the NIC identified by Device Manager, is a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC. Going into the properties, I can see that I have the latest Windows 7 driver installed - 6.111.723.2009, however prior to this I had the driver that came with the machine (when it was running Vista), which was 6.108.331.2008 and tried updating from Device Manager, but for some reason it said that I had the best driver already installed. To install the 2009 Windows 7 driver, I had to manually download it from Realtek. With either of the drivers, connecting via Ethernet doesn't work, and I'm confused as to what to do next.

I am running windows xp on an old desktop, I am using a wiresless usb adapter to utilize a wifi connection available in the dorms. to connect, i have to enable proxy on the browser I am also using an Ethernet connection via a LAN cable, which does not need a proxy to run
The issue is that although i browse freely using both connections simultaneously by using two different browsers, with the proxy setting enabled in one and disabled in the other, i can not run uTorrent when both connections are enabled. i have to go into network neighbourhood and disable the wifi connection, and only then does downloading start. the university does not allow bit-torrent downloading on the wifi connection so i have to use the ethernet.

I'd like to know if there is some easy-ish way to combine wifi and ethernet in a network.Since a picture says a thousand words, here's what I want to achieve:I use the desktop computer as a file and media server using windows home group.I have the laptop running windows 7 connected to the TV.So far I've been using just wifi, but when I try to stream movies from my desktop to the laptop I get freezes and glitches.I can't connect both my desktop and laptop wired to the ADSL router, since it's behind a wall I'm not allowed to drill trough.I have a spare network switch and cables, so I was thinking I could connect the ethernet adapters on the desktop and laptop together trough the switch, I'm just not sure how to configure the computers.

in the past my laptop has been able to connect directly to the internet using an Cat5e cable, but recently when I have been trying to direct connect, I have been unable to, and not sure when the problem started because I always used WiFi and it worked great. I do a lot of messing around, not only with my network, but with my laptop settings also, so something might have gone bunko. I have done much troubleshooitng, such as trying to update drivers, checking to see if the hardware was disabled, etc...

You must realize that I live away from the city and only have an iPhone 4 for a hot spot. It connects via WiFi, Bluetooth and USB. I have found USB quicker, but it doesn't seem to work under Windows 8. So I connect via WiFi only.I have a LAN, based on a D-Link DIR-615 router. This router has a WiFi option and has a Buffalo File server attached to the device that we use as a backup/file server and personal 'cloud'. When I am connected via WiFi and I plug in the Ethernet connection, the computer overrides the WiFi and attempts to connect to the Internet via the Ethernet port. It does know that the WiFi is connected as it is displayed on the bottom of the status bar as 'Internet', but choices to ignore or not check. I have gone to the devices and changed the priority to be Wireless on top and Ethernet on the bottom. This is done via the "Network and Sharing Center", "Change Adapter Settings", ALT-F (to get "File, Edit, View, Tools, Advanced and Menu" options), "Advanced" and finally "Advanced" again. Then put them in the priority you wish. Ethernet still overrides this and times out when I attempt to access anything on the Internet. It works the same on my wife's Windows 7 Laptop. It returns to normal if you unplug the Ethernet cable. Since I wish to have other files available, it is a pain in the bottom to have to unplug the Ethernet cable every time you change over to do something else and I usually forget and have to deal with the 'can't connect' message. It might be a simple solution to connect via WiFi to the router then hard wire the computers to the router, but this hasn't been a workable option. The router doesn't seem to be able to handle that type of connection?

Just got home from the Comcast store with a $7 rented modem just to last me until I do research and purchase one. I realize that this modem has only one Ethernet port with no WiFi support so I have another PC and a laptop sitting idle because there's no internet access. Did a quick search using Comcast's authorized modem's list and all of them only have a single Ethernet port and no WiFi. Is there a modem with multiple Ethernet ports with built in WiFi? I am getting almost 20mbps with a download speed of 4mb/s which is a HUGE improvement over my ATT DSL service that I've had since forever at 3mbps with a download speed of 300kb/s. I have no idea what technical specifications to look for in a cable modem to get 100% of full potential speed from my service without disconnects or other various problems.
I have a ATT U-Verse router sitting here right now, I am wondering if I can somehow connect it to my Comcast modem. I tried to connect the ATT router into Comcast modem via Ethernet cable, but I couldn't get past the "Your DSL service is unavailable" in the browser, but in my desktop system tray, it shows I am connected to the internet. If I could use this router, I would rather spend money on a modem instead of getting a combo.

I have only one computer right now.Had two, and got very weak signal to laptop (since discarded) upstairs from Linksys g 54Mbits downstairs at main desktop computer desktop.I have tried three different kinds of 54Mbits wifi routers, all with no success.I'm going to get my wife a new wifi laptop for Christmas, and she wants to be able to use it all over the house. The 54Mbits will cover the downstairs, but, based on previous efforts, I am thinking of putting my modem in the garage, where the cable enters my house, and using a splitter on the cable coming out of the modem to make two IN cables, using one cable for my comp and a 54Mbits router (for downstairs coverage), and putting a second wifi router on the end of the upstairs cable, to cover the upstairs rooms. My house has cable outlets in every room, so I won't have to do any wiring.
I plan to leave the routers on all the time (at this time) subject to how much of a bandwidth drop they cause. I have a 100 Mbps connection, and I play games, so I'd like to retain as much bandwidth as possible. I assume the two "on" wifi routers will pull zero bandwidth as long as the laptop is off. (??)Or maybe I should just try an "n" wifi router, since they get twice the distance, and forget the cable splitter idea.

I have been using my laptop since a year now and yesterday suddenly my internet stopped working. On top of the connectivity bar a yellow sign appeared. Now my internet status is "No internet access" but when i connect my ethernet cable the internet starts working and i can see the "Internet access" status. I have re-installed my wi-fi driver too from the orignal CD that i got with my laptop, but still no luck also i did not install anything in past 1 week and the only anti-virus i have is Avast (tried disabling it too). I plugged out the cables from my router and plugged them again but that dint work too. There are 2 other laptops (running on windows 7 just like mine) on which the wifi connection is working but on mine it is not working.

I previously had a Linksys WRT54G, before I upgraded to my new router I was getting quite good signals and my internet speed on my pc was ranging from 3.7 - 4.5 Mbpsfter upgrading to a Cisco Linksys E4200 based on the great Cnet ratings, my internet speed has plumetted to a range of 2.5 - 3.1 Mbps and the Signal Strength on my wireless connection has gone to "Very Low"I have checked the channels of the surrounding routers (using a software called network stumbler). I am using channel 1 which is not being used by anyone else.I am just surprised, I thought my speed and connection strength would sky rocket after getting such a good router.

I have ATT DSL Extreme service and I actually get about 8.0 service. There is a POTS splitter in my box that splits this line out to my office about 75 feet away. I recently moved the office back into the main residence and rather than move the 8 pair wire ATT put in, I jumped it with a new wire back to my new office. At the POTS, I didn't see where I could add a line so I spliced the pair I needed. Now it essentially feeds either building. But, now my speed tops out at just over 7.0. I have to believe the splice affected the speed but I don't understand why.

When my desktop is online via Ethernet, wi-fi stops working. A signal is detected, but is very unstable and often doesn't connect to the Internet at all, on any device. As soon as the desktop is no longer trying to access the Internet, all other wireless connections work without a problem. Base computer is Windows Vista Home Premium with all latest updates installed.Other connections include 2 laptops (one Win7, one PCLinuxOS), 2 Kindle Fire, Wii, iPod Touch, four cell phones, and Sony Media Player. They're never running all at once. But any number of them can run fine-- as long as the desktop isn't online at the time.
