2 DHCP Servers On Same Subnet Or Linking Two Subnets?

Aug 6, 2011

I have two locations both about 800meters apart, one is my home and the other address is a campsite where i have a linked router network (WDS with routers running ddwrt) where campers can all use the internet and also i have several IP cameras. Obviously both address have different gateways and therefore their own DHCP server. Everything was running perfectly until.I linked both of my address up using a long range antenna and now i am having problems.

Sometimes the two DHCP servers are competing with each other (i need both addresses on the same subnet in order to view my IP cams from home) and sometimes the computers log on to the wrong gateway. Its very annoying because the only way i can resolve it is by turning of the "linking routers" for a minute and then the Computers log onto the correct gateway. This happens to clients both side of the bridge. I have many different clients on both side of the bridge so assigning each computer (via windows) its fixed default gateway and DNS is out of the question as some of the clients are Camper's PC's and mine and my wifes laptops swap between both locations.

Now my query is, how can i block both DCHP servers from going over the bridge? OR can i have them on both separate subnets and still view my IP camera and still access all the routers from each subnet (i need this because sometimes i need to reboot the routers from home)

Two DHCP Servers On Different Subnets Same Physical Network?

Aug 14, 2012

I've done a very crude drawing of the network setup I'm working on. I just need to run an idea past some network guru's to see if I'm right about my idea.

The existing network consists of

Internet
Proxy Server
Several switches scattered around school
PC's

What the school wants to do is setup a side-along wireless network that uses the same physical switches but on a different subnet. The current subnet is 10.172.1.x .

To facilitate this I'm running a 2008r2 running RIP V2 to route internet traffic to 192.168.1.x subnet. I've had the wireless units use a static address and their own dhcp servers on the 192.168.1.x subnet. Wireless devices found their way to the internet fine. But I'd like to control the addresses from a single point of contact, hence the 2nd domain server running 2008r2. There are reasons for using a 2nd server, I've covered this in previous topics. If it's important, lets call it an intellectual exercise and leave it at that.

The question(s) : If I run a DHCP server on the 2nd server serving 192.168.1.x addresses, then any device on the physical network will obtain either an 192. or a 10. address correct ? The wireless devices will only take a 192. address because the wan address is statically assigned to a 192. address ?

The 2nd question : By setting a static routes out of the 2nd nic on the 2nd server, I can control the dhcp server so it will ONLY route dhcp requests to the statically assigned wireless devices ?

Cisco Wireless :: DHCP Error With WLC 2504 And Aironet 2600 Setup Across Subnets

Apr 2, 2013

I have just setup a new WLC 2504 controller to manage a WiFi service that will span 6 geographic locations.  The local networks at each location are on different subnets (all 192.168.x.x) and are linked up via IPSEC VPN links, and there is Active Directory spanning the sites, with DNS and DHCP servers running at each location.

I tested the WLC at our main office with a single AP, and it worked fine.  The AP set itself up, and wireless devices connect with no probs. Great!  Yesterday I headed out to one of our remote sites, and connected an AP to their network - and that seemed to work fine too.  Within a few minutes I was able to see the WiFi network I'd setup, and my smartphone connected to it straight away (as I'd rpeviously connected at the main office), so I was pretty happy that all was working well.

This morning however I've had notification that wifi performance at the remote site isn't great.  I've got someone to check their ip address, and I've found that their IP address and default gateway match the LAN at the main office where the WLC is based - NOT the LAN where the wireless client is.  Obvioulsy this is not ideal!

(I guess I HAVE done something wrong!?).  And how can I get wireless clients at remote sites to pick up an IP from the DHCP server at THEIR site?

Dual DHCP Or Access Devices On Different Subnet?

Aug 23, 2011

I have a problem with my 2 networks which are 1000 meters apart. One is my HOME the other is my CARAVAN SITE. both networks are working fine independently, the problem occurs when i join the networks together.I need to connect the said networks together in order to view my IP cameras which are dotted all around the campsite, i need to be able to view these from HOME.The problems i am having is DHCP servers are stealing clients from the other sides and directing them to the wrong gateway.please see below network map (these routers are all running DDWRTBelow is another network map which someone on another forum told me to do but its still not working. (DHCP servers are still clashing and still stealing clients)y the way, on both of the network maps all routers are connected with the LAN interface. someone told me to connect certain routers with WAN and it didn't work, or it was not explained correctly. Also please note that assigning clients with Static IP's is completely out of the question due to most of the clients being campers who come and go

Router DHCP Handing Out IP Addresses Not On The Same Subnet?

Dec 22, 2011

I have a Belkin model F9K1102 router supplying WAN/LAN connection to three PCs and 2 laptops. Two of the PCs are hardwired with the remainder PC and laptops are wireless. I'm using the default router IP of 192.168.2.1 and my ISP is Charter Cable (if that's of significance). The router is picking up all the dynamic IP information from my ISP and internal DHCP is enabled. Here's the issue though - when I connect a PC, laptop or iTouch (wired or wireless) with obtain IP settings automatically enabled the IP address it receives an IP address on a different subnet ie, 192.168.3.x and thus won't have WAN/LAN connection. I have tried to set the router IP to 192.168.3.1 and set the scope in the .3 subnet but the IP obtained by the device is .4! This makes no sense to me at all. The router is on the latest firmware (according to Belkin) and there doesn't seem to be any other update I can find. I have also tried another Belkin router (older model: F5D8236) and it does the same thing.

I'm not sure if this is related but I upgraded my service with Charter to a 18MB connection and a D3.0 Ubee cable modem - this issue seem to have began after this upgrade but I don't see how that would have any bearing on what is happening on my LAN IP scope and Charter tech support is pretty useless. My workaround is that I've static assigned an IP for each device in the same subnet as the router but it would be nice for the DHCP to function correctly.

Servers :: DHCP Superscoping Or Resubnetting

Feb 21, 2012

I have a LAN running on a 10.60.1.* scope and I am running out of IP addresses. My windows server 2003 IP is 10.60.1.3 router is 10.60.1.4, If I create a superscope with 10.60.1.* and 10.60.2.* scopes within it and add an IP address from the 10.60.2.* range to both the servers and routers network configurations would this allow the clients on both scopes to see the network? The router links our office to other offices as well would the new IP range cause all kinds of routing issues?I know with the resubnetting option changing to a 255.255.254.0 from the current 255.255.255.0 would allow the use of 10.60.0.1-10.60.1.254 in a single subnet but I suspect this would cause problems with seeing the other offices unless all routers were reconfigured to recognise our offices new subnet mask.

Servers :: Set Up Active Directory Without DHCP

Mar 23, 2011

I am trying to set up a small domain for my business. I just purchased a Windows 2008 server and would like to use it as my domain controller. Also, I just had a new ATT DSL line put in. It came with a 2Wire modem/4-port router/wireless router device, therefore the modem can handle DHCP. The line has a static IP address as well so that I can eventually use my own exchange server and web server.I have tried 2 different configurations and couldn't get either to work) I tried to put the router into Bridged Mode and use DHCP server on my server using a PPPoe connection to connect to the Internet. I was confused as to what my static IP address and default gateway of my server should be.2) Then I tried to turn DHCP server off on the server and routing back on the modem/router. This didn't work either. What method would you recommend and why? Also I have some additional questions on each method.

Method 1)

* What is the static IP address of the server. Is it in the 192.168.1.x address or the static IP assigned to my account?

* Do I need a second Nic Card And Router to connect to the rest of my network or can I use the router provide

* What would the Static IP addresses of the additional PC be. Do I need more than 1 static IP from AT&T Method 2)

* Will this allow me to use all internal IP addresses on my machines and use port forwarding if I want a specific box to be a web server or exchange server.
