We've recently installed Windows Server 2003 at our small office for data storage, and have set up shared folders in the Win Server 2K3 for access from about a dozen Win XP Pro machines.Upon the first access of these shared folders from a Win XP Pro machine, we're required to enter a User Name & Password for the Win Server 2K3 machine:Is there a work-around for this? Perhaps some method in WinXP Pro to save the username/password? As it stands now, any time one of the WinXP Pro machines gets rebooted, or if the server gets rebooted, users of the Win XP Pro machines have to re-enter the username/password, and I'd like to find if there's away around having to re-enter that info.

#1 windows 7 computer has a wired connection and #2 windows 7 computer has a wireless connection. When at #2 and trying to save a file to #1, the save time may be about a minute. When doing the same thing from a computer #3 with windows xp, the save time is a few seconds. Tried safe mode with networking. Same thing. Tried disabling remote differential compression. No change. The three computers are in the same workgroup.

I am trying to share some files from my windows desktop PC, other windows devices on the network can access those files, but a laptop that runs Ubuntu and a WD TV Live, which runs its own OS cannot access the shared files. I had this problem a few weeks ago but it somehow fixed it self but the problem is back again.

Have a server linked to four computers and a laptop for a business and can't seem to access shared files on server from other computers as it keeps asking for username and password to access it. Have tried to change from workgroup to domain that the server is on so to create username and password but error message keeps coming up 'a domain controller for the domain ata.local could not be contacted or if just use ata as domain it does not accept any username or password. Also have tried suggestions in other forums such as simple sharing and creating an account on other pc's with same username and password as server. All of the systems are windows xp and the server is windows standard.

I have 2 computers (one is using windows 7, other is using windows xp), one switch and router. I don't have physical access to router. I have plugged the cable from router to switch, and connected both PC's to switch and now I have internet on both PC's.My question is, can I "control" or share files on windows xp with Windows 7 (main computer) and in same time have access to internet? Or to use windows 7 to connect to internet?

We have recently ordered a laptop along with a docking station with the intention of connecting it with the desktop PC in the office. We want the documents folders of both computers to be synchronized and to that end we want to share the folders between each computer. However, to do so we will have to connect the laptop to the larger network in our office. Given the sensitive nature of the documents we only want the desktop PC and the laptop to be able to access these files and synchronize them.
Is there anyway in Windows 7 to specify exactly which computers are allowed access to shared folders on a computer? What's the best way to achieve the file synchronization between the two?

I'm considering upgrading my home server to 2012 Essentials from WHS 2011. WHS 2011 has always been strangely finicky and I have a new Win8 laptop, so i would like to take advantage of the new options in Essentials.that said, I was looking to access my data on the WHS 2011 system to back IT up, and all I see are a bunch of 4,194,304kb .dat files. I've been lucky in that I have never had to recover data from the server, so this has been an interesting issue. how does one access the backed up files on a WHS2011 computer, short of doing some kind of restore?

I am trying to transfer files from Laptop A to Laptop B. I can transfer files from B to A, but I can't transfer them from A to B. When I try to, I get an error message saying "Windows cannot access Laptop A".It then gives me the option to diagnose the problem (I'm using Vista on both laptops, by the way). When I click that, it gives me the error of "Cannot communicate with Laptop A. We pinged the remote host but did not receive a response".Laptop A is connected to the network according to it, it can access the internet fine and can access other laptops on the network fine. I have disabled the firewall, shared the folders appropriately, made sure they were both on the same workgroup (they are both on the default Vista WORKGROUP), and still nothing.

we have two servers in our network, one functions as a file server (windows server 2008) and the other as a domain controller with active directory and some database applications running on it (windows SBS 2003). the file server has folders for the different units in our company, these are shared folders. these folders can be accessed by anyone with a domain login by running \servername from their computers, without any further authentication required.
i have tried to set up sharing restrictions with no success, for example the Accounts folder, i right click on it and select properties, and the sharing or security. under both tabs i added three names of those that i want to have access to the folder. these names appear in the sharing list together with:administrator(servernameadministrator) administrators (servernameadministrators) administrator systemeveryone has not been added as is the case with all other folders. what is this system on the list? how i can restrict access, perhaps there is a setting that i have missed or settings in the network that prevent these restrictions?

I have a router-based home network in which the desktop running XP media center is connected by cable to the router. There are 2 wireless laptops, one running XP home and the other Windows 7.The laptops can talk to each other, and the desktop can talk to the laptops. But I cannot access the desktop from the laptops. I can see the (shared) folders, but when I click on one I get the message: "You might not have permission to use this network resource..Not enough server storage is available to process this command." ťOne solution suggested in several places is to change the IRPStackSize to 15. However, if I start the desktop in safe mode with networking, I can access the files.I can also access the machine using remote desktop. One extra frustration is that this is a problem that has happened relatively recently. It used to work OK.

I have found many well meaning suggestions to resolve this annoying aspect of networking between Windows 7, Vista and XP but it seems like we are all banging our heads against a brick wall. I have tried every suggestion I can find on other forums but still my Windows 7 computer cannot access my XP Home or Vista machines. The message I see each time I try is as follows:- "\WINXP (or \VISTA) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have permissions. The account is not authorised to log in from this station." You will of course appreciate that the 'administrator' is myself. I can access files and a printer on Windows 7 from the other two computers providing I place shared files in the public folder ... no problem with this.
I have checked that all three computers have the same Workgroup Name. Yes, I have got Network Discovery turned on. Yes, I have turned on file and printer sharing. Yes, I have turned off Password protected sharing (and tried it turned on). Yes, I have set my network location to Work network. Yes, the computers I am trying to access do show in my network window ... each and everyone of them can be pinged from each other. I even have a little utility called Wireless Network Watcher that shows that the IP addresses, MAC addresses and each computer by name can be seen on the network.

I have one laptop (Windows Vista) and one PC (Windows 7) in my house and I am trying to share folders between them. The problem is I can access my laptop's files from my pc, but I can't access my pc's files from my laptop.
And when I go to Network and Sharing Center, on "View your active networks" part, I click joined to give check mark on Pictures, Music, Videos, Documents, and Printers (the default setting: only printers that got checked). After I checked those all, I click "Save changes". But, if I go back to click "Joined" It was set as default, it is like it doesn't save my setting.

I have a user that is trying to save an excel speadsheet that is located in a shared folder on a server, the user can open the file and edit ok but when they try to save the file the progress bar pops up but just hangs then a message pops up to saying "file not saved". They are using Windows 7.The user is new and I have just set up their account so thought it might be permission issues but I have logged the user in on two other different machines (1 win7 and 1 WinXP) and they have no problem at all.

I've been able to duplicate my problem by using another WinXp computers instead of a USB drive plugged into my router. Same exact problem. So, the bottom line is that I can access (and modify) the files across the network if I'm doing so manually, but my Windows service fails when trying to do the same thing. If I run the program through Visual Studio, it works. If I run that same exact code as a Windows service, it fails.
I've created a Windows service that needs to access a common network location. To test it at home, I plugged a USB drive into my Netgear N600 WNDR3400 router. The USB storage settings show the workgroup name as Workgroup, and the file path is. [code]

I have between 8 and 10 computers on my home LAN. They are split between the default workgroup name 'WORKGROUP' and the name I have assigned to my home LAN.There is a mixture of Win XP, Win 7 32 & 64 and various levels of Ubuntu.
After 6 long days of trying I have made not one step forward in allowing file/printer sharing. The Windows machines are all running Comodo Internet Security, on one of which I have created my idea of a set of rules to allow file/print sharing. The Windows XP machine, with a user created set of firewall rules, can see no computers on the network (using My Network Places), aside from itself and the shares created on it.It cannot see the computers which are not in the workgroup.
The most common error message this computer generates is 'network path not found'. A win 7 32 bit computer, in the workgroup, can see all other computers that are in the workgroup, including itself, twice. It cannot access any shares on the Linux computers. It is able to access shares on the Windows XP computer.ufw Firewall is installed and enabled on one Linux machine and has a vaguely similar set of file/print sharing rules. That machine can see nothing at the Network place.A couple of hours ago it could see the machines that are NOT in my workgroup but could not see the machines that are!
Another linux computer can see the two workgroups (named and default) within the windows network, but cannot browse either workgroup. The most common error message from sharing attempts with the Linux machines is 'unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server'.Right now I am reduced to transferring USB sticks between adjacent computers....

I am trying come up with a setup that allows for a computer to simultaneously be connected to the web via a secure wireless network and to provide a shared drive via an unsecured (possibly ad hoc) wireless network.Which is to say, the computer needs to be able to use the web wirelessly via the secure network, and people need to be able to share files with it wirelessly whether or not THEY can use the secure wifi. One last requirement is that I need a this to be something that I can set up in a given location with no more configuration than required to connect to the secured wifi - if the setup requires me to mess around with the configuration of the router for the secure network itself, it won't work.
