Acquire Network Address No DNS Suffix
Jan 21, 2012
For awhile every now and then my computer decides it needs to 'acquire network address' on booting up. It never does succeed unless prompted by my going into Wireless Connections and pressing 'repair'. Yet my connection to the Internet is not impeded even while the little yellow ball hovers round mini monitor in the taskbar. It is hovering now as this thread is written. ipconfig reveals Connection Specific DNS suffix is missing, but the IP Address is there. My ZyXel 7087 router shows a fixed W/LAN/WPS and DSL light, but the Internet light is continually flickering, regardless of whether the computer is on. The TCP/IP is set to,'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically'. Advanced TCP/IP Settings shows DHCP Enabled. DNS tab - DNS server addresses box is blank 'Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes' is dotted and 'Append parent suffixes of the primary suffix' is ticked. 'Append these DNS suffixes (in order)' is unchecked. WINS addresses box is blank. 'Enable LMHOSTS lookup' is ticked. NetBIOS setting - Default (checked) - Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server. If static IP address is used or the DHCP server does not provide NetBIOS setting enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. Enable & Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP unchecked. While reading the WNC status the computer has found the Network address, but all above remains true.

I use a PC at work and we are in the process of moving so we disconnected our internet early. For a couple weeks I need internet connection at work and found our neighbor who is allowing me access to their service. They gave me their password but when I try and connect it constantly says acquiring network address. My smartphone has no issue being connected.

I am using an Linksys WUSB100 ver 2 to wireless connect to a TrendNet Router WEP-652BRP.The router is using WAP 2 encryption. Everytime I try to make my wire less connection I get "acquiring network address" all the time. I usually fail to make a connection. Could the problem be signal strength?

Wireless internet has been working fine on my Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop for years, until last night. I am getting strong wireless signal but my wireless network connection can't seem to acquire a network address - it just tries and tries without success. I also am getting a message that I need to check the box labelled "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" but after I have done this, it eventually seems to uncheck itself after a while or upon reboot.

12 hours ago, my laptop connected to my home's wireless network, no problem. The only event between then and the next time I logged in was that the ethernet cable was unplugged from the router, to be plugged directly into the Xbox. After it was reconnected, my laptop was recieving the signal, and the other home computers connect to internet just fine, but the laptop is locked out of the network. Error message when I click Connect:"Unable to acquire an IP address while connecting to Wi-Fi. Please check your settings and contact the system administrator if the problem persists."I have already tried restarting the computer, the modem, and the router. I do not want to reset the modem to factory settings.

I have a dell inspiron e1505 with a dell wireless 1390 wlan mini card and I recently used the installation disc that came with the laptop to install a fresh copy of windows xp on an empty partition. I have installed all the latest drivers, also. The problem is that I can connect to my WiFi network but it is stuck on acquiring network address. I have tried releasing and renewing the ip in command prompt, reset winsock, and have mad sure all the correct services are on automatic and are started.

My network key was changed recently, and it took a few tries for my laptop to connect, but when it did it was fine. Then the key was changed again, and now my wireless is wonky. Sometimes it can't find the network, other times it will find it but then can't acquire a network address, and if it does manage to connect (sometimes it will as soon as I click 'Cancel' when it's taking forever to get the address) it starts slowing down and then speeding up again. The settings have not changed on anything, other than the network key.

Have an old laptop running XPSP2 with a WPC54G V1.2 card that I use for email when traveling. Had no problems accessing my old home network that ran off of a WRT54G V 5.0 wireless router, nor with any of the "motel wireless networks" when I travel. I changed ISPs and now have an Actiontec PK5000 wireless router.
When I attempt to connect I get an error message "unable to acquire network address."
This new router has the following 64 bit and 128 bit settings
wpa-wpa2 personal
wpa personal
wpa2 personal
wep
security off
Using any of the security settings I get the error. Turning off security allows me to connect fine.
I realize this is a pretty old wireless card so is it possible it doesn't work with the current encryption standards but I would have thought that wep would have worked. The driver for the card is V3.3.15.0 which is also old. Would updating the driver work and if so what driver? If a new card is the only way any recommendations for an inexpensive card?

My grandma has a Dell Inspiron 1520 running Win XP and has a Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n W LAN Mini-Card. The other day I reformatted her computer for her to clean things up and since then I have been unable to connect to the internet. Her computer will recognize the wireless network and connect to it but after a few minutes of trying to authenticate network address it will pop up a little window that says "limited or no connectivity." I've read countless forums on the internet using my computer and have come to the realization that it's an invalid ip address. In one post I read someone provided an ip address, subnet mask, default gateway, and a preferred DNS server code that I typed in which then showed that I was connected with wifi but still says authenticating on the WLAN card.

About a week ago we had a virus on this computer. Ran malware and AVG and the computer worked fine. A few days after the virus was removed I could not get online or print to the printer that was hosted on this computer. It is a wired connectionUnder network connection, it says "acquiring adress" but it never aqcuires one. I typed in the IP address manually and that allows me to get online but I cant see the other computers on the network and they cant see this computer.

I have 2 computers that cannot/will not acquire an IP address from my DLink router. There are 2 other computers that aren't having any problem at all...so I assume that it is not a problem with the DHCP service of the router. The 2 computers are laptops: one netbook running Windows XP and another standard laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium x86. Both computers are running McAfee and I have scanned with McAfee and Malwarebytes, and both are malware-free (no infections were found on either system on first scans...so it's not like I'm dealing with a system that has had infections removed). When connected to the network, they attempt to acquire an IP address, but cannot for some reason and then Automatic Private IP Addressing takes over and they come up with a 169.254.x.x address. I cannot figure out why this takes place, as I have gone through Winsock repair, uninstalled and reinstalled both network adapters (ethernet and WLAN) on both laptops and nothing seems to make a difference. I have even tried disabling APIPA by adding the "IPAutoconfigurationEnabled" DWORD value in the registry......still the same. I have manually configured the adapters with a static 192.168.0.x address, and I can begin to communicate on the local area level...but still cannot establish any kind of Internet connection.

I changed my wireless modem yesterday and i was unable to connect over wireless for one pc which has win xp sp2. It was unable to acquire ip address. Working fine when connected through wire. I checked the forums and tried this:
"Now Go to Start/Run and type inetcpl.cpl and press enter/Connections/LAN Settings. Make sure all the boxes are unchecked. Now go to Start/Run and type ncpa.cpl and press enter. Right click the Local Area connection/Properties scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP-IP)/Properties. Make sure Obtain an IP Address and DNS Server Address Automatically are both checked. Now go to Start/Run and type CMD and press enter. IN the Command Prompt type ipconfig /release and press enter. the IP Address changes to 0.0.0.0 Now type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter. Now type ipconfig /renew. Now type ipconfig /all. "

. The laptop can connect to the internet using the wifi card. However, it cannot connect to the internet when using the wired connection but it can be pinged from other machines at work. The NIC does not pick up a different IP address even after releasing and renewing the IP address through cmd. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the NIC. The NIC is working because when I set a static IP address the machine can connect to the net. Using DHCP it goes back to that same IP address. I have tried a winsock repair as well with no go, as well as taking the machine off the domain and re-joining it. Anyone see this before? Is there something I can do on my end to get a different IP address through DHCP or do I have to get a Network engineer involved? This is a machine on a corporate LAN.

I have a Belkin wireless router attached to my computer. It was set up as an access point, with an IP address of 192.168.0.254. I had some problems with the network today and could not access this unit by typing in the IP in my browser. I feel certain that is the IP address I put in it when setting it up, as I have a record I kept of all the settings. Is there a way to retrieve the IP address to verify that is what it is set to?

I purchases a Sony Vaio Intel i3 2 weeks ago largely because its a Sony and because of the Wireless Display it offered using Netgear Push2TV 1000.My first day the WiDi worked perfectly but then I got busy installing and updating the computer. And now, two weeks later, when I attempted to connect to P2TV the TV screen just says "Could not obtain network address".I updated the drivers. Nothing changed.Reset the adapter. Nothing changed.Enabled My Wifi/checked for Intel Wireless PAN DSCP server/checked firewall. Nothing happened.I looked up other people having the same issue and there seems to be a lot and they all agree that there is no cure in sight. Apparently, BestBuy even had the balls to tell some of them to restore the computers to its original factory setting to resolve the issue which is pathetic.

Reset to factory defaults. DHCP turned on. Status page shows black for router IP, gateway, and DNS addresses. Powered router+cable modem on/off multiple times already. I also have another wifi router (WRT120N) and it works fine.
Pretty simple connection. Just a ethernet cable between the cable modem and E1200 internet port (Cable modem <---> E1200)

An IP address cannot be acquired, I think. The ethernet connection is fine, and also other computers can connect wirelessly without an issue. I searched around this site and google, but I can't figure what to do.

I was trying to learn a bit more about routers and therefore tried to acces one of our routers using an external ADSL line at work. The router is a ZYxel Prestige 324. Since I did not have the password I performed a hard reset. Now when I try to acces any website I receive error 105 ERR_ NAME_ NOT_RESOLVEDThe only difference that I can see now is that there is no longer a connection specific DNS suffix assigned.Could this be the issue? If yes how can I configure this?

i'm using ACS 5.3.0.40.2 and its setup with an AD External Identity store for wireless PEAP MSCHAPv2. AD is configured with Alternate UPN suffixes so that for example: 22056 Subject not found in the applicable identity store(s). ##
I've checked the release notes for 5.3.0.40.5 and there are some changes/fixes for AD but nothing I can see to explain the behaviour above. I'm looking to upgrade to 5.3.0.40.5 soon but I really need the Alternate UPN suffixes to work.mydomain.com is the AD domain namean Alternate UPN suffix of another.com has been added to AD
A valid AD user can add either the @mydomain.com or the @another.com suffixes to their username and login successfully. This works fine with 5.3.0.40.2 but changes when I upgrade to 5.3.0.40.5 - users who use the @mydomain.com login ok but users using the Alternate UPN @another.com fail with the error: [code]

Suddenly after more than a year of running fine, my wap seems to be giving all clients a bad DNS suffix which of course breaks DNS resolution internally (no problem with internet resolution). I assume it's a wap problem since all of my wired clients receive the correct suffix. I'm using a RVS4000 router if that makes any difference.

I switched from Time Capsule with AirPort to E2000 and have a problem with configuration.I use the same IPs as in AirPort and E2000 gives me an error:"The WAN IP address cannot be the same subnet as the Guest Network IP address" and I can't save configuration. But in my opinion they are different.I use "Static IP" option and I have IPs from my ISP: [code] So WAN IP is different subnet as LAN and I don't know what to do now. It worked with these settings in AirPort and here I can't proceed.

a couple days ago my BEFSR41 started making trouble, and so far I have not been able to get it working properly again. When I hook up my laptop directly to the cable modem everything works fine, and I get an IP address via DHCP. When I connect through the router, though, the router status shows 0.0.0.0 for all DNS, gateway, etc. addresses, and even pressing DHCP Release/Renew doesn't change that. Also, in the log I see these messages:
2012-08-08 20:30:41 warning DHCP RENEW WARNING - Field invalid in response
2012-08-08 08:30:52 notice TLV-11 - unrecognized OID
Since I can connect to the cable modem directly, it seems the cable modem is not at fault. My overall setup is:
- BEFCMU10 cable modem
- BEFSR41 (not sure which version, but I believe it's a 4.x)
- WAP54G
Could it be that my provider (Cox Communications) has changed some configuration in their DHCP server, and my laptop (MacBook Pro) can handle it, but the router cannot?

... and made a fundamental mistake of uninstalling adapters hastily without looking into it. Now when I try to re-install the adapters, I'm running into difficulties. Specifically, I don't have the CD-ROM I originally must have used, and the following message is popping up: "Files Needed - The file 'atl02_2k.sys' on Atlansic Fast Ethernet Adapter Installation Disk is needed. Type the path where the file is located and then click OK." Unfortunately, I don't have any idea if there is a path where this is located, so installation cannot complete.
The reason I took this option to begin with was that the wireless connection on my laptop [Asus, Windows XP] was acquiring network address without ever connecting fully to the internet. I had previously tried another of other methods, such as manually entering an IP address, to no avail.

A few days ago the internet on my desktop was working fine. now it has the 'limited or no connectivity' sign on it and i have done a few things to try and fix this. I started by trying a simple repair. it comes up with 'the following action can not be completed: Renewing your IP address' This lead me to try and restart my PC and router with no luck.
I then decided to look a bit further into it and went ito CMD and flushed the DNS. i then did 'ipconfig /release' which generated the response 'IP address for adapter wireless connection 9 has allready been released'. I then did 'ipconfig /renew' to which it generated an interestin response:
'An error occurred while renewing interface wireless network connection 9 : The RPC server is unavailable'
I have made sure my DNS client is on automatic, alont with my RPC (this was uneditable). Its not a router problem as i have had multiple devices connected before and my laptop is working just fine connecting wirelessly.
