Adding A Second Modem To Increase Signal In A Part Of House

Feb 5, 2012

I initially had a laptop and a desktop with one Telkom router, running both wireless and wired (Ethernet cable)pics removed for security purpose. My daughters got laptops, and I bought a Netgear Wireless N300 Router/Modem for a better signal. The signal is good, but at the extremes of the house poor.I found on the internet a plan of a Windsurfer and built one. The results were not that impressive. So I thought to incorporate the first router (the Telkom router/modem) somewhere in the LAN for a boost.I changed the first (Telkom) router to a booster, but struggled (used advice from the internet) and stopped the exercise. Some settings were changed on the Telkom modem. So this was the situation for the past 2 years.

D-Link DIR-825 :: Signal Strength Is A Little Weak On Main Floor

Jan 5, 2012

I have a DIR-825 in my basement at one end of the house and it works great.  My problem is the signal strength is a little weak on the main floor at the other end of the house.  I would like to add a second access point to cover that end of the house.  Do I need to get another DIR-825 and wire it to the original or is there another option?  I obviously don't need all the features of the DIR-825 for the 2nd AP, but I cant find a less expensive option that will still allow me to use both bands.

How To Increase Wifi Signal Strength

Jun 3, 2012

I have computers scattered across our home, and in many areas it is not feasible to run ethernet cable. At one location (less than 30 feet away) but through multiple walls, I can barely connect to any POS (I have two). I added a stand alone antenna extension with long antennas on both the router and the WiFi card on the PC, however, this made zero improvement. What should I be looking to purchase to increase the signal strength? I've already tried different routers.

D-link Dir-825 :: Increase Wifi Signal Strength With Software?

Apr 5, 2013

Even though I put high gain antennas on my routers which extended the range of good signal immensely, I wish to try to get even better signal strength also.   When using manual configuration mode on the router, I have set the WiFi power level to 100% (default level).  Is there a way to increase that level beyond 100% and "overdrive" the signal?  I tried to input a number >100% and that was not accepted.

I know this is possible if I go to dd-wrt, and possibly with open-wrt, which I prefer not to do for various reasons, not the least of which is that I have both a Rev. A1 and a Rev. B1 router (Rev. A1 is not supposed to support dd-wrt).  I also know that increasing the power will make the router run hotter.  I am willing to risk it as I monitor the temperature regularly.

Has anyone ever tried to do this or, have the people who want this just gone to dd-wrt?  From the dd-wrt forum it appears that the DIR-825 router in Rev. B1 is not very user friendly to dd-wrt.  After 3 years the code is still flaky.  I would prefer not to use it, if possible.

WiFi To IPad - Increase The Signal Strength For A Longer Distance?

Jun 12, 2011

I use a Linksys WRT54GR router. I recently bought an iPad, and I generally use it in a room that is on the other side of the house and through many walls. When it works, it works nice. But recently, my signal has been weak, and is often dropped. Pages load slowly, or not at all after getting a could not connect to server or whatever message. However, this isnt a huge problem for my laptops when used in this room. I dont believe it is the iPad that is faulty because my iTouch also experiences difficulty sometimes. I need a way to increase the signal strength for a longer distance. I looked at a repeater, but im not quite sure what it is and how to set one up, or where to buy one.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E1000 - How To Increase Signal Strength

Nov 29, 2010

We have a new e1000 router that was having trouble reaching the TV for Netflix movie streaming. Too many walls and too much distance. A simple solution was to direct the signals from the router by placing aluminum foil behind the router so all the signal was going towards the TV rather than in an 360 degree circle. Now the streaming works great! After the movie is done I remove the foil and everything looks just like it should.

Lag Spikes On My PC Not On Any Other Computer In House

Oct 8, 2011

I've been having problems with my internet on my PC. I use it mostly for gaming (League of Legends specifically but it's also hooked up to my Xbox for internet connection), and I frequently (about every minute or so, sometimes more) get bad lag spikes when playing games. My character will freeze in place while I click wildly about and then appear somewhere else (and die or lose a kill).

The thing is, I'm connected to my Apple Airport which all other devices in the house are connected to (Wii, dad's Mac desktop, my Mac laptop), and only my PC gets this lag. Seems like a fairly generic problem but I have no idea what to do about it, so if you need more information let me know.

Getting Wireless Into Other Places In The House?

Oct 23, 2011

my dad wants me to get on expanding our home network (getting wireless into other places in the house). i do consider myself pretty tech savvy ( i just built my computer from scratch) but this is a little bit beyond my comfort zone. the 4 ports on the router are keeping me tied up and the size and layout of the house are restricting the wireless range

provider: comcast cable
modem: arris TM502G (comcast provided)
router: linksys wireless-n wrt160n v3

4 pcs running windows xp to windows 7
3 laptops running xindows xp, windows 7 and windows 7 starter (netbook)
1 xbox 360
1 ps3
(looking to add netflix capable bluray players on 2 tvs in the future)

the downstairs layout (router is the star)

the upstairs (red is range of current setup thats a stretch) (blue wanted coverage)

not to scale and a quick draw the top half of the house is off set from the basement area. i used google earth to estimate the range from the router to the outside area of my wanted coverage area and its roughly 80 feet through 4 walls and the flooring i do not believe theres a single router capable of doing that without dropping some serious cash down.as is all the ports are currently tied up, and id like to expand the number of ports, along with getting wireless to the area i pointed out, i have the capability of pulling hard wire through out the house also.

No Network Connection In Certain Parts Of The House

Dec 29, 2012

I can't connect to the wireless modem from most parts of my bedroom. I can connect to the modem from the hall next to my bedroom. Can't from my brothers bedroom, but can from my parents' bedroom. All using the same laptop. Once I connect to the modem, and move into one of the rooms where I can't connect, I do stay connected. I can ping the modem, but I get very high results (800-1500 ms), while I get 1-5 ms in other parts of the house. I only get extremes, good connection or very bad connection, haven't found anything in-between.I've tried changing the network channel (I've tried 1, 6 and 11), but that didn't work at all. I've been away from home a few days and these issues started while I was away. Nothing obvious changed in our house while I was away. Just that my sis got a new phone (but can a phone honestly be responsible for this?). And my laptop has found a new modem in the neighborhood. Previously everything worked fine. I had great internet all over the house. Something is just blocking the signal.

Internet Dropping For One Or Two Connections In House

Two of the pc's are wired, one is on a plug (devlo) and the xbox is wireless. I phoned BT, our isp, who sent an engineer out. It turned out the BT rep told the engineer I had reported no dial tone on my phone line and if I had allowed them to investgate this fictitious fault it would have cost me £150 for a call out.

How To Setup Ethernet Ports In House

May 31, 2011

my house has 4 ports in each room, 2 coaxial, 1 for the net, and one for a TV, and there's a phone jack and a Cat5e Ethernet port. From what I have learned, all my ports lead up to a "closet", and I have found it. It has all the connections for the LAN, and everything else. I am confused on what to do next. I see that there are blue Ethernet cords connected to the ports on one side, and that they are not connected to anything on the other. I thought I had to buy a switch for all these ports, and I haven't done so yet. where am I supposed to connect the modem to the internet. It is currently connected to the internet coaxial port, which it then connect to the VoIP switch, and is then connected to everything else. Where is the coaxial port that I have to plug it in to, and what is it labeled?.

D-link Dir-655 :: Spread Wifi Around Whole House

Mar 24, 2012

Just purchased two DIR-655's to spread the WiFi around the whole house.  I realize now that the 655 is considered "older" when it comes to technology but I am really not using these for anything other than full coverage of our house.  I am just looking for any recommendation people may be able to offer as to how to get the best out of these.

Same SSID everywhere so that the clients will see it one big network.  Different channels so that there is no interference.  No security enabled. (I am in the boonies, no neighbors and I have walked all the way out to the road with my laptop.  You can't even see the network) My guess is that the clients will automatically switch to the AP with the strongest signal correct? Any utility that can tell me which AP I am connected to?I am running a Windows 2008 domain here in my house with the server performing DHCP and DNS functions. Cisco :: ASA 5505 Same Security Level Traffic?

Jun 27, 2011

I have ASA 5505 that has two inside security level 100 interfaces and an outside interface. On the inside interface we have corporate domain subnet with DC and 30 hosts. On the inside2 interface I have few servers that runs specific application important for our business needs, and dumb terminals that are connected to them.I have a laptop user that periodically needs access from our corporate vlan1 to one of the servers on inside 2 vlan via remote desktop or some other remote viewer client,so he can view reports etc.I have enabled same-security-traffic intra-interface command and added nat exempt command pointing specific laptop host machine to that specific server.

Now my main concern is regarding security. This user carries his laptop home, browses the web, puts USB memory, and you can imagine how this machine is susceptible to all kind of malicious software. Inside2 vlan is very important and until now it has been a very secure environment. This is no longer the case since all traffic between this inside sec level 100 vlan host and corresponding inside2 sec level 100 server is now allowed because of the enabled same level interface traffic and nat exemption rule. Do I have another solution that would allow communication based on just a tcp port number for this host? Something like port forwarding from outside to inside Vlan interface?
