Laptop Around House Without Relocating DSL Modem

Apr 26, 2011

If I have a wireless adapter do I still need a wireless router? I have DSL service for my desktop but just got a new laptop and wanted to be able to use my laptop around the house without relocating the DSL modem. However I wasn't sure about the adapter vs. the router.

Adding A Second Modem To Increase Signal In A Part Of House

Feb 5, 2012

I initially had a laptop and a desktop with one Telkom router, running both wireless and wired (Ethernet cable)pics removed for security purpose. My daughters got laptops, and I bought a Netgear Wireless N300 Router/Modem for a better signal. The signal is good, but at the extremes of the house poor.I found on the internet a plan of a Windsurfer and built one. The results were not that impressive. So I thought to incorporate the first router (the Telkom router/modem) somewhere in the LAN for a boost.I changed the first (Telkom) router to a booster, but struggled (used advice from the internet) and stopped the exercise. Some settings were changed on the Telkom modem. So this was the situation for the past 2 years.

Laptop Unable To Connect To Modem?

Aug 28, 2011

I am having problems connecting to the internet. It has never done this and just started a week ago. I contacted my ISP and they told me it is not the modems fault. I have a modem and then it goes to a Trendnet 100mpbs Ethernet Switch. Then it goes to my primary computer and then to my laptop. They are all hard-wires. I contacted Acer and they said it wasn't a problem with the computer. When I look at the control panel it says "Unidentified Network" and has no other information than that. I already attempted to manually put in the IP I should be receiving from the modem, but that did not work either.

Connecting Arris Modem Directly To Laptop?

Feb 15, 2011

I've been trying to connect my laptop directly to my Arris modem with an ethernet cable to get on the internet, but for some reason every time I do I have "limited access" and can't get on the internet. I can only seem to get my laptop on the internet while the wireless router is connected to the modem and then either connecting wirelessly or by connecting my laptop to the wireless router with an ethernet cable.I want to connect to the internet without my wireless router, because someone was hacking our router and was apparently doing illegal downloads. We got a cease and desist letter that said our internet will be terminated if it happens again, so I want to connect to the internet without any wireless connections being set up.

However, this is incorrect, my laptop has full access with parental control restrictions. I just upgraded to a faster internet speed with my cable company, and so they came and installed a new combination modem/ wireless router yesterday. Since then my computer has said that it is connected to the internet but when I try to load pages sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Mostly they don't work, and when they do they are very slow and don't always load pictures, video, etc. The other computers and devices in my network have no problem with the internet connection. My computer connected perfectly before the new modem was installed, and it works when it is plugged in directly ( it was plugged in the entire time the cable guy was setting up the network). I tried running the diagnostic tool and sometimes it says that the dns server isn't responding and other times it says it can't find the problem or that it can't find any problem.

This never goes away ( it should in a few seconds) and the machine freezes with no cursor/mouse movement or keyboard. Only way to get out of this is to hold the power button until computer powers down. Reloaded the modem driver. Tried an external USB modem and the same thing happens. Lag Spikes On My PC Not On Any Other Computer In House

Oct 8, 2011

I've been having problems with my internet on my PC. I use it mostly for gaming (League of Legends specifically but it's also hooked up to my Xbox for internet connection), and I frequently (about every minute or so, sometimes more) get bad lag spikes when playing games. My character will freeze in place while I click wildly about and then appear somewhere else (and die or lose a kill).

The thing is, I'm connected to my Apple Airport which all other devices in the house are connected to (Wii, dad's Mac desktop, my Mac laptop), and only my PC gets this lag. Seems like a fairly generic problem but I have no idea what to do about it, so if you need more information let me know.

Getting Wireless Into Other Places In The House?

Oct 23, 2011

my dad wants me to get on expanding our home network (getting wireless into other places in the house). i do consider myself pretty tech savvy ( i just built my computer from scratch) but this is a little bit beyond my comfort zone. the 4 ports on the router are keeping me tied up and the size and layout of the house are restricting the wireless range

provider: comcast cable
modem: arris TM502G (comcast provided)
router: linksys wireless-n wrt160n v3

4 pcs running windows xp to windows 7
3 laptops running xindows xp, windows 7 and windows 7 starter (netbook)
1 xbox 360
1 ps3
(looking to add netflix capable bluray players on 2 tvs in the future)

the downstairs layout (router is the star)

the upstairs (red is range of current setup thats a stretch) (blue wanted coverage)

not to scale and a quick draw the top half of the house is off set from the basement area. i used google earth to estimate the range from the router to the outside area of my wanted coverage area and its roughly 80 feet through 4 walls and the flooring i do not believe theres a single router capable of doing that without dropping some serious cash down.as is all the ports are currently tied up, and id like to expand the number of ports, along with getting wireless to the area i pointed out, i have the capability of pulling hard wire through out the house also.
