Jul 10, 2012
can some one suggest me will it be recommended to use PIX firewall 525 on Voice ( sip ) network for 5000 CC to 1000 CC calls in signaling mode since our server are using public IP so will i be able to use it without NAT / PAT also will there be any issue of QOS.

My company have a Cisco PIX 525 firewall which is cater for NOC internal data network and also voice network, the subnet for data network is 192.168.2.0/24 and the subnet for voice network is 172.16.2.0/24. someday this NOC firewall was faulty. I was migrated the data network from this NOC firewall to the other temporary firewall just at the moment. And the voice network i migrated it from where it orginal at NOC firewall to a VOIP system which actually having a connection with my temporary firewall(This temporary FW only to take the traffic of data network). After the migration of data network from old firewall to temporary firewall and also the migration of voice network from old firewall to PABX system. The subnet for data network remain the same as 192.168.2.0/24, but the subnet of voice network i edit from 172.16.2.0/24 to 192.168. 3.0/24.Now when i want to use one Cisco router 2600 to replace this temporary firewall then facing problem at the voice network....The data network after migrated from temporary firewall to new 2600 is ok, users can browsing. But when i trying to at the same time when the data network been migrated , it will affect the voice network which still located at PABX. ..user cannot make call...I was thinking reason because this voice network which currently in 192.168.3.0/24 is tight to somewhere on the 192.168.x.x at the old firewall internetwork. So, when i migrated the data network over to new router, it will also cause the failure of voice even thought after i migrated the voice system to new router. So when i do the disaster recovery back to the temporary firewall for both data and voice. The voice is resuming to normal.

We're having some numbers ported over to us and we'd like to verify that we are in fact receiving all of the numbers at our SIP gateway. Since we have been getting more and more activity on this router, I'm becoming more concerned about using certain debug's for fear that the router maxes out CPU and drops.
What the best debug command would give me this information with minimal impact on CPU? In the past I've used 'debug ccapi inout' and a couple of others similar to that. With so much activity though sometimes it bombs the router. Also I am logging to the console directly, maybe there is a better method with less CPU impact. I just don't want to have to go back and forth to look for stuff 50 times either if I write out to a file or something, it could work though I suppose.

Have a asterix PBX running my system and I upgraded my security with a cisco ASA 5505. Now all the extensions are working including the remote once. Everything elase like internet.Other servers all working fine. Only problem is that when ever someone dials a landline number from an extension it does not go through.seems like the firewall is blocking it but I cannot figure out why or how. All the NAT and Access list is fine. Although I have no idea how to accept the SIP PROXY IP through the firewall and I am guessing that might be the problem. There is no any other problem and I am 100% satisfied with the ASA5505 except this problem

I have an SA520 that is being used as a front end firewall. Behind it I have an IP PBX. The VOIP provides are registered and I can make outgoing calls. However It appears that the SA520 is either blocking or not routing the calls. I have opened the ports recommended by both the IP PBX and the VOIP provider. What do I need to do to make incoming calls through the SA520?

i have a use-case in which we need to firewall some of the security-sensitive-vlans to the ASA. In other words, there are few vlans that have their SVIs on the N5k (Layer-3 enabled) which talk to each other and there are some which have the layer-3 on the ASA. The ASA has sub-interfaces for those vlans. The N5k-sw and the ASA are interconnected on the same 1 physical link with a sub-interface on both ( /30) and the ASA is injecting default route to it in OSPF. They are advertising all of their networks in OSPF. I see all the routes in them. (Attached pic),My issue is: I am unable to ping the other sub-interface on the ASA from the N5k. (If you check the attached diagram, i cannot ping 20.1.1.1 from the N5k, although i can reach my next-hop 10.1.1.2) I have made the security-level to 100 for the subinterfaces and the physical interface on the ASA, also have allowed ip,icmps in the ACLs on the sub-interfaces of vlan 10 and 20 in both directions.

I am currently working on our Cisco voice platform at work.
Our Cisco firewall engineer has left and I have been given the task of looking after the firewalls as our Chief Exec seems to think that Cisco Voice is similar to Cisco ASA firewalls,
Are there any books/videos out that you can recommend to learn the about firewalls quickly.

I have a question regarding firewall configurations. Is it possible to have two interfaces ( for two internet service providers) one for voice and one for data. Can I have two Outside Interfaces that one will apply to a pppoe client group and the other will apply to a static IP? Is this possible and if so What would be the steps on applying this connection? Also to note I have a point to point connection already established for the pppoe. I also have another point to point connection for data, but however I do not know how to apply this to the firewall.

I need to prioritize voice traffic through the ASA
priority-queue outside
tx-ring-limit 200
queue-limit 2000
Do the above values look correct? and why is the priority queue applied to the outside interface and not the inside? (or both). Also is this the part that ensures that the regular traffic does not choke the voice traffic?
class-map voip-class
match dscp ef
policy-map outsidemap
class voip-class
priority
service-policy outsidemap interface outside
Will the global policy remain which this interface policy taking priority?

I'd like to see some REAL LIFE comparisons of ASA firewall throughput (a bit like this one for ISR G2 Routers - [URL].
The reason I ask is that I recently upgraded a firewall from an ASA5505 to an ASA5520 on a small network where the only outside connectivity was a single 10meg Internet circuit with an IPSEC VPN (not landed on the firewall but on a router) to another site.
When I swapped out the firewall the users noticed a big improvement. The firewall is not doing anything out of the ordinary - no IPS or VPN, just standard state full inspection.

As stated in the attached picture, my company has a remote office which its PBX was connected to the main PBX via a pair of leased lines and a pair of E1/HDSL converters. (The distance is about 2 kilometers, so the E1 was converted to HDSL and then back to E1 at the remote site)
Now, IP network is developed between two sites. We want to transfer the calls via a pair of 2811 Routers, both equipped with VWIC2-1MFT-T1/E1, as the second part of the picture. I tried to find an straightforward document, but I was unsuccessful. What configurations should be made at both ends to transfer the calls to/from the remote site ?

I am just wondering on how mismatched MTU sizes are handled in Layer-2 networks and also inside a particular switches internal architecture.Layer 2 devices do not do fragmentation in the even of MTU mismatch. is this because Layer 2 devices do not re-write header information (like inserting destination IP and next hop MAC into the newly created frame.) i believe this is what they call per-hop behaviour? if this not the reason, then...? assuming this is the reason, let me proceed to my next question. When we set MTU on an interface , there is no mention of direction (ingress or egress), so i take this as means in both directions. so if a jumbo frame comes in on an interface which is set to recieve jumbo frames and forwarding decision is made and the frame is scheduled to egress via an interface whose MTU is not set for Jumbo frames, will the switch drope the frame at the egress buffer? if not, this implies MTU is an ingress property(only for incoming packets). But, again if it drops the packet, then MTU shoud have been system wide or global configuration as opposed to interface level configuration (just like nexus 5000).

I intend to deploy a voice+data network using some old 3745 and 2811. The network in effect has six 3745 in a hybrid topology at different locations and each having three WIC-2T, one WIC-4T, three NMHDV-2E1. That's pretty much juicing out the maximum from these routers These will serve as my core routers and for access I will be using my 2811s with more VWICs and lesser WIC-2T to give voice and data to subscribers. The 2811s will have links to multiple 3745s. The NMHDV-2E1 will serve for the voice needs at the 3745 locations. All the WAN links will be E1. All my telephones will be on analog voice using traditional EPABX with CEPT/ PRI E1 cards for connecting to the routers. And for data, ethernet ports. Two of the routers will have E1 links to the PSTN and Internet which has to be extended to all my folks. Now, for the tricky part, all my network modules are refurbished stuff from ebay and all the ports will have links on them. I intend to use OSPF with only the backbone area.

I have spent several days tearing my hair out trying to properly configure our small business switch (SG300-10p) for voice. The phones are a relatively new addition and will replace old POTS phones. Our network consists of a 1941 ISR router, the SG300-10P switch, a mac server (handing DHCP, DNS, AFP), 4 client desktops and 4 SGA525G2 IP phones. The router, server, desktops and phones all have their own connection to the switch and the second data ports on the back of the IP phones are not used. We do not have any unified comms devices for voice. Our VOIP solution is hosted by a local SIP provider, and each phone independently registers with the provider's SIP proxy over the internet.
Left almost to it’s own devices (or presumably flat, default settings on VLAN 1), this whole setup works just great. We can TFTP files, make and receive calls, and do all the usual XML stuff. Calls are crystal clear. Even the localisation and directory works. However, I’ve been told several times that to ensure good quality on VOIP calls during periods of busy traffic, I should set up some form of QoS. A Voice VLAN on the switch, I was told, is the best way to do this as it automagically gives priority to the whole voice VLAN over the normal data VLAN.
I have followed instructions in numerous manuals, articles and guides, and have managed to create the Voice VLAN, both manually and automatically (I can watch Smartport detect the phones and see the Auto Voice VLAN add the ports to the VLAN as I connect them). The trouble is, as soon as this happens, the phones lose connectivity with the rest of the network, including the DNS server and the router, and therefore the internet, causing them to lose registration with the SIP service.
I tried adding the server and router ports to the Voice VLAN and tweaking every possible combination of tagged, untagged, excluded, trunk, access, general and PVID settings I can think of (by the way, I have no idea what any of those mean). The switch is in Layer 2 mode, but adding the port connected to the router to all the VLANs does not result in internet connectivity to the phones. I have told the phones to tag frames with the VLAN ID and told them not to. I have tried upgrading firmware and I have rebooted the switch so many times I'm tired of those wretched little flashing lights.
Nothing seems to work. And so I am stuck with everything on VLAN 1. My most recent thought is that the 1941 needs to know about the Voice VLAN (I checked CDP and it knows about the switch), but I’m reluctant to start messing with the router config when this is our production network, at least without knowing what I'm doing. I don’t even know if QoS applies when a Voice VLAN is not set up and we're on VLAN 1, some articles say yes, others say no. And when it is set up right, how does that priority transfer to the router? I’ve looked in the router manual and config options and found something called 802.1Q, but I have no idea what it is, how it works or even if it applies to our situation. Can I forgo VLANs altogether and use QoS some other way, perhaps?I have googled enough to cobble together our setup in IOS up until now. Ideally, I would still like to be able to ssh or https into each device (as I do now) for management, and I’ve read about setting up a another VLAN for config, monitoring etc, but I guess that would mean routing between VLANs in Layer 3.

I will be implementing a new firewall (cisco asa 5515x) on my existing 3750x (server switches) and my 2960s (user switches). What should I need to apply on my firewall and swtiches to make the implementation successfull. I will put my 3750x as my DMZ and my 2960s as my inside. The 3750x have multiple subnet and also the 2960s.which features and technologies i need to know on those 3 products. my 3750x and 2960s don't have any ACL defined and most common features are vlan, switchport, trunking, spanning-tree, stacking, vtp.how my asa knows that my 3750x/2960s have multiple vlans. my current connection right now on 3750x and 2960s is just through 6 ports i assigned as one trunk, below is my config [code]
my 2960s vlans are almost the same with my 3750x except vlan 160, 170, 192. but of course when i put this in asa, i have to segragate vlan for 3750x (192, 100, 110,160, 170) and 2960s (130, 150). for my 2960s connection to the asa and since this will have big bandwidth, i will use 3 ports on my asa (and trunk it) connecting to my 2960s and i will use 2 ports on my asa (and trunk it) connecting to my 3750x. the one internet ports and my one management ports on my asa will stay like that.

I have a question with regard to setting up the ID firewall on the ASA 5585 in a single forest, multiple domain windows network.Currently I have a semi-operational IDF at the top level but can't find users on the lower other domains, here is the setup:I have 3 domains.
[URL]
Both domains have a two way parent-child trust and I can look for users in AD Users/Computer on both domains. I initially setup the ASA to look at domain1.test.com using an LDAP aaa-server per the IDF instructions, and then proceeded to configure the ad-agent. I installed the adagent on the domain1.test.com domain controller configured the settings on that system and had no problem adding users to the firewall and getting functionality within domain1. I looked to see if I could see domain 2 and domain 3 users and found none. I went ahead and added the domain2 system to the adagent on the DC and the system says that it is up, but when I search for users is not pulling them from domain2. Instead, it shows domain1 users as domain2user1. I also configured another adserver in the ASA to search ldap on domain 2 to no avail. The cisco documentation states the following:•Before you configure even a single domain controller machine using the adacfg dc create command, ensure that the AD Agent machine is first joined to a domain (for example, domain J) that has a trust relationship with each and every domain (for example, domain D[i]) that it will monitor for user authentications (through the domain controller machines that you will be configuring on the AD Agent machine). Single Forest, Multiple Domains—All the domains in a single forest already have an inherent two-way trust relationship with each other. Thus, the AD Agent must first be joined to one of the domains, J, in this forest, with this domain J not necessarily being identical to any of the domains D[i] corresponding to the domain controller machines. Because of the inherent trust relationship between domain J and each of the domains D[i], there is no need to explicitly configure any trust relationships.Reading that it sounds like it should just work. I had everything properly configured before I installed the adagent, but I'm guessing that there is a chance that you can't have the adagent on the top level DC and get to communicate with the lower level domains.

I was asked to enable netflow in an ASA Firewall for Orion/Solarwinds server monitoration. Firewall is a 5550, with 4G RAM, and no extra modules but SSM-4GE. This firewall has 5 DMZ segments and ans specific segment for internet traffic. There are segments as unique subinterfaces in physical interfaces. Other segments as individual subinterfaces in the same physical interface (but individual VLANs)Usually firewall CPU flows between 30% to 40%. Rarely to 50%.
1 - How dangerous or risky could be implement netflow in this firewall?...This firewall is very critical for the customer. My concern is regrading CPU, traffic generated, memory, etc
2 - In a month, firewall will be migrated from 8.2 software version to 8.4 software version. Is there any incompatibility in some commands?...Would be recommended to perform netflow configuration after software upgrade?
3 - How could it be implemented for Orion monitoring, regarding each individual sub-interface (and so, each VLAN assigned)?I there any recommendation regarding configuration, best practices?
