Cisco Switches :: DI-655 Router - No Blinking Activity Lights

May 24, 2012

My previous setup was a ProSafe GS108 switch, 10/100 Dlink router/switch used only as a switch, and a DI-655 router/switch.  With this setup, activity when I wasn't using any of my computers was zero.  There would be no blinking activity lights.

I dumped the ProSafe and 10/100 switch, and use the DI-655 only for my internet uplink and wireless, and now have everything else plugged into a Cisco GS200 switch.  There is activity now every two seconds.  I presume this prevents the Green energy saving features from kicking in as the ports are in use.

What's the difference that's leading to all this activity that presumably wasn't there before?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Lights On All 3750-X Switches Blinking Rapidly?

Jan 21, 2013

We recently installed 15 of these switches, and we're having a few odd, random network issues. But before I enumerate those issues, I have a simple question: are the connection lights on these switches *supposed* to blink rapidly? Or are they supposed to blink *normally*?On all other switches I've ever seen / worked on / worked around, when a cable is plugged into a port, the connection lights blink upon network activity. sometimes they blink a little faster when there's lots of activity, but mostly it's an almost lazy, random kind of blinking.  When you look at a switch and every light on every port that's connected is blinking very rapidly, your first instinct is "No *wonder* nothing works around here!" and you find the port that's chattering and unplug it...all the blinkies go back to normal.Well, on the 15 switches we've installed, every light that's on blinks rapidly, as if there's an uncontrolled storm going on. Is that the "new norm"? Did I miss the memo, and there is nothing to be worried about here? Or are the rapidly blinking lights telling me there is, indeed, a problem?

E4200 - LED Lights On Router Keep Blinking Orange?

May 1, 2013

I have a Cisco E4200 router connected behind my Comcast cable modem.

The small LED lights located at each network cable plug-in on my router are continually blinking orange all at the same time over and over.

I also notice on all my computers that are wired to this router the small LED lights near the network card plug-in are also blinking orange.

what these orange lights mean and if I have a problem?

My internet service seems to work OK but I'm not sure what is causing all these orange LED's to blink and is there something wrong that imay be slowing my system down.

I have upgraded my Cisco router to the latest firmware and also power reset my cable modem and router several times with no change in the problem.

Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT150N All Lights On Front Are Blinking

Feb 9, 2008

I had successfully set up my new WRT150N router and it was working.  But then it just stopped after about 12 hours.  All the lights on the front of the router are blinking.  When I directly connect to the router, my computer can't detect it.  I've browsed through these forums a bit and tried a few things - the reset button (60 seconds), unplugging the router, downloading the EasyLink Connect tool, but I'm still stuck.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E1000 Lights Blinking Erratically

May 7, 2011

When I came home tonight, the lights on my E1000 hardware version 1 (that I have had for only 9 months) were, as best as I can describe, blinking like a digital clock blinks 12:00 over and over. All of the blue LEDs would light up at once, and go off, repeatedly and rapidly. This is the second time this has happened - the first time (about two weeks ago) I called a techie friend and he had me hard reset the router (30 on 30 off 30 on) and it worked, I just had to set up my wireless network again. This time, I just unplugged the cable from the back of the router, waited about 15 seconds and plugged it back in, and it went back to normal.

In case someone may be wondering, unplugging the from the surge protector did NOT work; when I first noticed the lights blinking, I unplugged it from the surge protector, waited about 10 seconds, and plugged it back in; the lights continued their rapid erratic blinking. I then did what I described above - I plugged it back into the surge protector, and then unplugged it from the back of the router, waited, and plugged it back in and it was back to normal.

I thought perhaps it needed a firmware upgrade, but checking the website, while I was able to locate the site to upgrade the firmware for E1000, I could only see an upgrade for hardware Version 2, and my router is Version 1 - which, from what I understand, is NOT what I want, as that firmware is for a different hardware version and may cause problems on my Version 1 router.

While my router seems to be fine now. Is my router starting to kick the bucket already? I haven't had it that long - bought it last September. Do I need to upgrade any software or firmware for it? If so, where do I get the correct upgrade for my hardware version?

Linksys Wireless Router :: Power Outage - E1000 Lights Blinking

I am on a surge protector and we lost power last night.  This morning we were stilling experiencing a brown out but now the power is back 100%.  I've walked through the E1000 router reset and not matter what I do, all the lights except the power light blink rapidly and dimly.  Could the router be fried even though it's on a surge protector????  It's less than 6 months old so hopefully still covered by warranty.

D-Link DIR-615 :: Internet Activity Light Blinking Non-stop With New Comcast Connection?

Jan 21, 2011

I recently switched from a DSL ISP (Earthlink, Zyxel modem configured as a bridge, pppoE connect) to a cable ISP (Comcast, Arris cable modem, dhcp connect). Basically PC --> DIR615-->Cable modem-->Internets. With the old DSL the Internet activity LED (green, looks triangular) on the DIR615 blinked only when internet activity occurred. With the new Comcast connection it blinks non-stop about 5 times a second! Even if the PC is turned off it blinks. It stops blinking if I disconnect the ethernet cable between router and modem. The connection itself is fine, but if the DIR615 is doing something it should not be doing it might slow the connection down a bit, (or burn something out prematurely?)FYI, the Arris cable modem does not seem to be a router. It takes a cable connection from outside and provides a single ethernet cable and 2 (voice) telephone cables to the house.

Presumably because the switch cannot get to my dhcp ?I have tried connecting a serial cable to the switch top see if I can see any error, but when running Hyper Terminal I only get the white screen and can not see any POST etc.As far as I under stand it is a straight through cable, do I need a null modem cable to console onto the switch?

Cisco Switches :: SG 200-08 All LED Lights Flashing Green After Power Failure

May 5, 2012

Thinking back, about a month ago I updated the firmware (I can't check version at the moment). The switch has been working fine since then. Today I needed to move some power cables and the switch lost power. Now ALL of the LED lights are flashing green and I can't access the switch. I've tried setting a static IP on my laptop to 192.168.1.20, mask 255.255.255.0, and accessing the switch on 192.168.1.254, but there's no response. I've tried holding in the reset button for at least 30 seconds while the switch is powered on, AND while powering it on. None of that has worked. Also when I first power it on, the system LED flashes orange very quickly for a second or so, then all of the LEDS start flashing green.

Cisco Switches :: SF 102-24 MGBSX1 Doesn't Show Any Link Lights Or Traffic

Jul 28, 2011

I just purchased a Cisco SF 102-24 unmanaged 100 series swith with a MGBSX1 mini-Gbic converter.  My goal is to connect this to a building that is connected with a Black Box LH1706A-ST media converter that has 100mb ST fiber connections.  In my testing the Black Box shows both a Fiber link and RJ45 port link at 100mb, but the MGBSX1 does not show any link lights or traffic.  So a computer connected to the Cisco switch is not able to communicate over the fiber connection.

Can the MGBSX1 be connected to a media converter that only has 10/100 ST fiber connectors?

Confusing Network Activity In Router Log

Aug 2, 2012

I was examining my router's logs the other day and I noticed a recurring entry stating that my PC's IP address was sending packets to the IP 172.16.30.115 on port 80, and that the router was dropping them.Except for the fact that my home LAN uses the 192.168.1.0/24 network EXCLUSIVELY. That is all it has ever used since this router was set up, and the only other networks we have EVER used are 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.2.0/24. So why, I wondered, is my PC repeatedly sending (presumably) HTTP traffic to a private IP that is not and never has been on my network?I wasn't worried about what these connections might be doing, since I figured they couldn't do anything, but I was kind of concerned about what was generating this traffic in the first place. So I downloaded Wireshark and ran a capture for 30 minutes. Upon completion, I filtered results to show only packets that contained the IP 172.16.30.115, as either the source or destination IP.Based on the router logs, I expected to see three packets with my PC's source IP address and a random source port sent to 172.16.30.115, port 80 every 10 minutes. And I did see that. These are TCP packets, and they appear to be completely empty. The only thing I noticed about them is that the SYN flag is set. I don't know what the significance of that is, if any, but that's what I noticed.

What I DIDN'T expect to see were the packets that had a source IP of 172.16.30.115. These packets (also TCP) had the ACK and RST flags set, and they contained the text "Go away, we're not home." So not only are there packets being sent to an IP that cannot possibly exist within my network, but there are also packets coming FROM the impossible IP telling me to go away. All of that is scary enough on its own. But then I hopped on Google and did a search for the phrase "go away, we're not home," and almost every result was related to the decline of the Storm worm. After reading about Storm, I was more confused, not less. In its heyday, Storm used UDP traffic to communicate between peers, and my mystery traffic was TCP. Storm usually did not use well-known port numbers, such as 80, which I read was part of what made it so resilient. Not to mention that the most recent posts I could find regarding the Storm worm were dated 2010 and were about the possibility of a second Storm, and I didn't get this PC until May 2011. Plus, even if we ignore all of this and operate under the assumption that I have the Storm worm on my PC, that still doesn't explain the fact that the traffic from my computer is heading to a private IP that is NOT, I repeat, NOT being used on my network, my router says it's dropping this traffic, but my PC is still somehow receiving a response from an IP address that 1) isn't on the network and 2) can't be having any packets forwarded to it, since the router says it's dropping the traffic. So, operating under the worst-case scenario assumption, I used two different virus scanners (not simultaneously, of course) to do the deepest scans they are capable of doing. They both turned up completely clean. In fact, I've had AVG Free installed on my computer since I got it, and even if you look at my virus history you only see a few tracking cookies, a corrupted EXE from the Skype setup folder, and a Trojan dropper that I never even ran because I thought the file properties seemed fishy so I scanned it and promptly deleted it. So I now have to go back to operating under the assumption that I do NOT have the Storm worm, and I am back to the drawing board.

Router Failures / Often Times Fail To Respond To Any Web Activity?

Jan 20, 2011

In each case, the routers have functioned flawlessly for a period of 2 to 8 months, then suddenly begin to require daily to hourly reboots to keep the speed up, and often times fail to respond to any web activity whatsoever. Ping tests are intermittent, sometimes failing but other times succeeding while web sites remain unresponsiveFor three years I lived with two or more room mates at a time, each of us with our own computer (or 2) and all doing a lot of peer to peer downloading. I realize a router can overheat during heavy use like this, so buying new routers so regularly has seemed vaguely understandable. However it doesn't seem like that is the case in my most recent failure.I've lived alone for the past 3 months, and have owned the Belkin Play Max N600 HD since. I have NOT been P2P downloading or putting a heavy load on my router in any way (or so it seems). Yet as of about two weeks ago, it has suffered a major slowdown just like all of its predecessors. Yet my 30 mbps internet connection roars to life the moment I plug the modem directly into a computer.

My desktop remains on 24/7 but like I said before, I do not do constantdownloading/uploading. Both wired and wireless connections are effected equally, and I have always kept all my routers WPA encrypted. When websites become unresponsive on my Belkin today, it is usually after everything has been sitting idle for some time (overnight, or all day while I am at work). Speaking of work, today is a perfect exampleI remoted into my home desktop and was able to interact just fine, yet when I would launch a browser and try to load any website at all, I get absolutely nothing. I had to transfer a text document through DropBox (which also still worked) because I couldn't get Google Docs (or gmail) to load on the remote computer

Router Lights With No Physical Connection

Nov 7, 2012

Today I woke up and wanted to connect to the internet via my laptop. The current network I have is the DSL modem connected to a WR841ND TP-LINK router, and then connected via LAN port to my desktop PC, and via Wi-Fi to a Laptop. However, my connection was unsuccesful. I power cycled both the modem and the router, awaited for a stable connection, and tried again with no result. That's when I noticed the lights on my router seemed strange. While the router's LAN port 1 to the computer was connected and lit, the LAN port 4 was also lit, but it wasn't connected to anything. Then I noticed my wan port showed the same behaviour, since it was already unplugged, but its light was still on.

That's when I decided to do a factory defaults reset, a hard reset, and reuploaded the firmware to the router. No change at all.I decided to connect my DSL modem to the computer directly, and internet works like a charm, so everything points to the router as the source of the problem. Now, I wanted to know. What would be the procedures I should follow to test or repair the router before declaring it "deceased"? Could this be more of a firmware problem? A hardware one?
