Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960-S With GLC-FE-100FX Fiber Modules - Packet Loss
Apr 19, 2013
I have two 2960-s switches with GLC-FE-100FX fibre modules in and I am seeing packet loss over the link that is connected to the modules. When the interface is shutdown and brought back up it always comes up in half duplex even thought it is set to full in the config. I've seen other posts where you have to use the command no duplex then full duplex to get it to come up int full duplex. This does appear to work when I do a show int it says its full duplex however I'm stil seeing 20 - 40% packet loss on the link which suggests to me there is still a speed/duplex issue. The device at the other end is a Cisco 7200 which is set to 100Full. If I plug a Cisco 2811 into the fibre link I get zero packet loss which suggests its a problem with the switch.
I have changed the modules and fibre cables which makes no difference. As I stated at the start I have two 2960's both are showing exactly the same issue. Details of the switch are below the SFP are cisco branded:

I am working on a project to connect 2 switch stacks via 10 Gb fiber. I am told that the 3750Xs do not natively receive the 10 GB SFPs. What part numbers do i need to order to make this work? Is there any IOS image requirements?

I have a 24 port 2960-S that is not communicating with a 2960-LST that it is directly connected to over fiber. The link is up on the LST but will not come up on the -S. What command should I use to bring up this link? I have tried no shut from the (Config-if)# prompt.

Have a pair of 2960's in a stack, one port(trunk) connects to another DC and we are seeing ~5% packet-loss and large output drops to this DC.
#sh interfaces gigabitEthernet 1/0/17 counters errors
Port Align-Err FCS-Err Xmit-Err Rcv-Err UnderSize OutDiscards
Gi1/0/17 0 0 0 0 0 182867

Hardware is Gigabit Ethernet, address is a0cf.5b87.ec11 (bia a0cf.5b87.ec11)

As you can see, 30sec rate isnt excessive, but as the drops are outdiscards it would appear we are getting hit by the small buffers/microburst issue.

When a ping from the server behind LACP:
--- google.com ping statistics ---
44 packets transmitted, 39 received, 11% packet loss, time 42990ms
what would cause this packet loss with lacp?
some output from the switch:

we have a 6509 with ios 12.2.33SXJ
we have 2 WS-X6516-GE-TX, WS-X6516A-GBIC, and a WS-X6748-GE-TX with a WS-F6700-CFC daughtercard
our sup is a WS-SUP720-3B
we are experiencing packet loss for everything connected in the WS-X6748-GE-TX blade, right now we dont have any production device in that blade due to the packet loss we are experiencing.
this switch was running hybrid before it is now running native ios, however I can't recall if we didn't have that packet loss before. do i need to update a firmware of the card or daughtercard (if this is possible, can't say i've done it before).

I have a Cisco 2960S stack and I'd like to tune the timers so that packet loss is minimal if a switch fails. To simulate a failed switch I have reloaded it while running a continuous ping to a management address on the stack's SVI: [code] As I see the same results when a ping is directed through the single switch (switched), and through the firewall (routed), I'm inclined to think that this is due to the stack failover timers on the Catalyst 2960S.Is it possible to change the stack failover timers (i.e hold down, failover etc), to speed up the failover process?

I have been searching the message boards and wasn't having much luck. I am running some monitoring sessions on my 6509 and on the VLAN I am monitoring, I am experiencing a really large packet loss. If we hook up a laptop to the destination port and run wireshark we are seeing between 80% and 90% packet loss. I dont see the packet loss on the show port command, but I do on the show int vlan command.
The config is as follows:
Session 2
---------
Type : Local Session
Source VLANs :
RX Only : 500
[Code].....
I was doing some reading on Egress vs Ingress and I am wondering if the Egress SPAN replication state could be causing the packet loss that we are seeing or does the ingress & learn command override that?

Company I work for just moved into a new location. We have two data closets which are patched as independent entities, with no Ethernet tie connection. These closets are roughly 100 feet apart.
There is a fiber connection that runs between both closets, that the previous tenant used to connect the switches. I have placed a Cisco 2960 switch in each location, and added one mini SFP gbic's to each switch. After attaching both sides, neither light up. I do a sh inter gig1/0/49 on each and shows 'down down' (not admin down).
What is the trick on getting these to communciate, do I need to configure these ports, and are they supposed to light up?
What I am trying to accomplish is to get the one closet that is completely cut off, communicating by logically stacking, or 'daisy chaining' via fiber.
I turned off the lights and popped the fiber out, and I do see a faint red light (I did not look straight into it), so I think the fiber is active.

Is there a router (1900-3900 series router) that will support a 100FX fiber connection. We use to use 2800-3800 and 2600-3700 series routers with FX fiber interface now these routers are no longer available and our need for 100Mbps FX is still a requirement.

I need to connect 4 Floor Building with 4 Cisco 2960 - 48 ports switch each other and it needs to be through a fiber. So all PCs connected to each switch would reach the LAN/WAN from the other switch. (attached is the image here with)
I see that the 2960 has 2 SFP ports each port of each switch should connect each other or how?
My simple question is:
1. What cable / patch code I have to use = Single-mode or Multimode? ( distance for each switch will not more then 25 mts)
2. Do I have to use SFP or SFP+ module?
3. What kind of SFP/SFP+ module I have to use = Single-mode or Multimode?
4. What kind of connector should patch code have = LC / SC or ?
5. How to connect each switch with redundancy like ...each switch should be interconnected with each other or I have to choose Cisco 3750G which has more then 2 SFP ports (option#1 & opetion#2 = attached here with) =
Best practice for connecting cisco switches over fiber.

I want to connect a Cisco small business switch (sf302-8) to a Cisco catalyst 2960S over a multi mode fiber. The transceiver I am using in the catalyst is a GLC-SX-MM. I presume in the SF302, I will have to use a MGBSX1. My question is "are these transceiver compatible with each other and if not, is there a transceiver that will suit both pieces of hardware?

I had a strange issue yesterday when onsite installing a new access switch.Port capacity full on a two switch stack of 3750 x48 PS switches (WS-C3750- 48PS-E)- New 2960 x48 PS - WS-C2960S-48FPS-L racked, with the plan of using it just as an edge switch via SFP Stacking cable.Setup the two connecting ports with simple initial config: - switchport mode trunk- no encapsulation option on the 2960, default dot1q- dot1q set on 3750 port- no shut on both sides.Connected the SFP Stacking cable but it didnt work:- %PHY-4-SFP_NOT_SUPPORTED: The SFP in Gi1/0/1 is not supported
This is ok as I had a backup:- Next step tried using 2 x Short Haul SFP SX GBIC's with LC - LC OFNP 50/125 fibre patch lead - no joy- Extra backup of 2 x Long Haul SFP LX GBIC's with the same fibre patch - no joy- Checked the fibre and it was not a cross over so transmit and receive going down the same side, switchedand still would not come up.- Used Fibre as a straight through and still the same.In all cases there was no indication of any life in the connection. It is pointing to a faulty fibre patch lead but I know it has worked in the past. Could it be something to do with the config or device incompatibility? Or any setting I need to activate?

Does GLC-GE-100FX is supported on the WS-C2960S-24TD-L. I don't see this switch listed under the compatibility matrix.URL
But the datasheet for the 2960S says this:
"The Cisco Catalyst 2960-S with SFP+ does not support the GLC-FE-100BX, GLC-FE-100FX, or GLC-FE-100LX." But it provides no reference for the GLC-GE-100FX The easy answer is, no the 2960S-24TD doesn't support it, any clarification if possible.

i have an OM1 MMF fiber run between two switches, the first being a 3750 and the second being a 3550.
The link currently exceeds the maximum distance for OM1 @ 1000Mb/s (220m) so i would like to downgrade the link to 100FX using the necessary SFP's/GBIC's to extend the maximum distance to 550m and run the link @ 100Mb/s.
I have the part code for the 100FX SFP to install in the 3750 (GLC-GE-100FX) but cant find a 100FX GBIC for the 3550, can I use a 1000SX GBIC (WS-G5484) for the 3550 at one end and the 100FX SFP at the other? Any success with this configuration over MMF?

Which fiber modules are compatible? Are the regular SFPs ok to use or is there a special asr series of SFPs to use?

i am implementing tcp as per rfc 793, i have one doubt, while sending first packet, if that packet lost means, tcp will wait for RTO and retransmit the first packet, and after got the ack for first packet, then only it will send second packet or without getting the ack for the first packet it will send second packet.

My workplace has a UC-540 attached to a cable modem, attached to the world wide web.
When we make VOIP outbound calls through the standard ISP, there is no auditory packet loss sympton; however, when we make calls to out sister branch through our VPN, we experience auditory packet loss symptoms.
I would think the VPN should only be affecting the encapsulation of the data. To my understanding the VPN packets and non-vpn packets all hit the router at the same time, and transport over the web in the same manner. Why would there be packet loss over only the VPN??
--Regarding QoS, if a standard layer 3 device receives a VOIP packet encapsulated in a VPN, do the QoS bits in the VOIP packet get acknowledged, or are they hidden by the VPN encapsulation?

I have recently switch internet to Time Warner. Since the day I got it, i have experienced random packet losses of 100%. I have called time warner and they are going to send a tech out. But i would like to know more about this before he comes. I have replaced the modem with a brand new one. Surfboard SB5101N from the one i was leasing from them. They both do the same thing. I have made sure all my Drivers are up to date. I have replaced the coax cable and Ethernet cable and ran my Anti Virus and Spyware program. It does it more during online game, I have reinstalled the game and was having no problems with the ATT Dsl i had before this.

I'm having an issue with packet loss during the same time every day at 12:20PM. I checked scheduled tasks, ran wireshark, made a static ARP entry, and ran ping tests. The ping tests show packet loss only when pinging 1 DB server to 1 App server. When the packet loss happens everyone on the network connected to the DB gets kicked out of the DB. They are eventually able to reconnect but its annoying that everyday at 12:20pm they get kicked out. Ping tests from the DB to the Firewall stay constant. But when I ping from the App server to the DB it loses connection at 12:20pm and when i'm remoted into the DB server i get kicked out as well. It's like at 12:20pm the DB server stops incoming connections for some reason.

When I ping my video streaming host's IP address (the IP that they gave me where I can view my IP web camera's video stream), I get anywhere from 0% to 8% packet loss at various times of the day. They're claiming that there's no problem, that this is because this is a router and it's dropping ping packets due to "ping priority giving preference to more important network traffic."

I had all kinds of packet loss and I was ofcourse suspecting my ISP. But then I tested pinging my internal interface and found that it has packet loss as well. I have about 10% packetloss to my interface with 192.168.0.254, I have the same thing from several different inside hosts. My inside rule is the implicit one, any, any. service IP.In the log I can see a teardown and build of the icmp whenever the packet loss accour. There is no packet loss pinging the outside interface from the internet.
