Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960S Replace Master Switch In Stack
Jun 4, 2012
I have a stack of 2960S (c2960s-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE2.bin) and the master has failed (used to have a priority of 14). The second switch has become master (priority 1) as can be seen below: [code]
If I connect a new blank 2960S (same IOS) through the stack ports, will the master sync its config to the new one without causing problems? As I understand the new blank switch will also have a priority of 1 and will by default be numbered as 1. So if the config is correctly synced and I later on want to make switch 1 the master, I need to set the priority: [code]

I have two like switches in a stack (WS-C3750G-48PS 15.0(1)SE2 C3750-IPBASEK9-M). Switch#1 is the master and is the one that needs to be replaced. Can I force Switch #2 to be the master, then power down switch#1, remove switch#1, insert the replacement, and then power on the newly added switch without shutting down or rebooting switch#2?

We have 2 3750 24 port fiber switches in a stack and we would like to change the member to become the master. Both are running the same IOS and they are alive on the network. I read that you can change the who becomes the master by setting the priority number higher on the member, which we did. However this requires a reboot of the member to take effect. Is there a way to force this without having to reboot? One other note, both switches in stack have a single gig connection that goes to the core (6500). One gig link is blocked due to spanning-tree and this is on the member that we want to become the master.

I have a running setup having 2 Cisco 2960s 24 TS switch with Stack configuration. Now I want to add one more same Cisco switch. My questions are:-
1) How can I do this...(Should follow the same process as I did before.
2) Could I do this without impacting the service. i.e. without rebooting the switch.
3) What should be the connection archiecture as of now since there is two switch so it is connected 1 -1 and 2-2. but for 3 switch should we require to change the connectivity.

I was just curious about something with upgrading a 2960s stack.
To copy the image to the switches in the stack I use: Switch# archive download-sw tftp://x.x.x.x/filename
Does this also set the image as the boot image or do I still need to issue the boot system flash command?
can I just issue this command on the master switch and reload and the new config will be pushed to the rest of the switches?

I have a live 28port Catalyst 2960S switch. By live I mean that there is an essential piece of equipment plugged into this switch that can suffer little to no downtime. Over the course of time the number of devices patched into this location has increased to exceed the 24 ports available and we have had to resort to adding unmanaged switches to fill the need. We have acquired an additional 2960 & stacking modules that I would like to stack together, keeping the existing switch as the master. It is my understanding that the stacking modules are hot-swappable and that this member switch can be added without bringing the master switch down, thus creating zero down time for the financial server that is connected.
The steps I believe that need to be followed are as such: write mem to existing switch and backup to our TFTP serverinstall the stack module in the existing (while powered up) and new (while powered down)place the 2 redundant FlexStack link cables on both switchesthen simply power the member switch on After boot the member switch will get it's OS and configuration from the master and I can begin moving CAT5 cables from the unmanaged switches to the stack.

We have a stack of a 3750E with a 3750X, when we turn off the master, a disconnection occurs for around one minute while only one request timeout is seen when the slave is turned off. Is this normal? Details: in other words, when the slave switch is elected as the new master all the port-channels and some physical ports become in 'down' state before reobtaining the up state again, this results in a one minute outage. The question is: is it normal to have a layer2 control traffic interruption when the master fails and re-election occurs and if yes, what is the normal downtime in seconds. the layer2 control information such as port-channels LACP protocol are not synchronised to all slave switches by the master?

I am replacing our 2 3750s which are in a stack and are running in VTP server mode for the domain with 2 new 3750Gs. There are 4 trunks to other switches which bare in client mode and 2 trunks to 2 ASAs which are in active/standby mode (one in each switch). Anyway what will happen to the VTP clients when I replace the stack as the revision number will be 1 on the server? The clients will ignore any VTP updates from the server ?

I'm connecting the two devices above and I need an LC to SC fiber cable. It should be pretty simple but I've seen two different types of LC/SC cables - one is 8.3/125 and one is 62.5/125. I believe the 62.5 is an older cable type but when looking at the detail sheets for each of the SFPs I see that both of these support a 62.5 or 50 micron core size.

I need to add two additional 2960S switches to my stack. I saw a diagram that showed how a 4 switch stack can be connected, but I couldn't find much detail on adding a switch to an existing stack (besides master election). The output below shows how the existing stack is connected and its state
SW#sh switch detail
Switch/Stack Mac Address : 0011.2222.3333
H/W Current
[Code].....
I will need to break one of the stack rings between SW1 and SW2 in order to connect the new switches. Does it really matter which ring I break to connect the additional switches? Does one ring act as primary? If so, I'd rather not break that ring so this process is transparent as possible. Also, is there any benefit to disabling the stack port vs just disconnecting the cable?

I have an 2960S all configured, with vlans, ports configurations and others. Now, I bought other 2960S and two stack modules to create a stack with these 2 switches. We call:
-Switch1 (I have configured and in production)
-Switch2 (New switch, no configured)
Can I connect these two switches in stack without lost the configuration of my Switch1 and no turn-off this switch? Does not stop the users access?

I have a single 2960s without stack module. The stack port has a status of down, however I'd like to disable it so that it does not generate a false alarm in my NMS. The documentation states that there should be a command "switch 1 stack port 1 disable" but the switch (running 15.0(2)SE2) doesn't seem to be available. Is this a dcumentation bug or is the command not there at all?

applied an iOS update to a stack via tftp. I used the archive Download-sw tftp:// method. I rebooted the stack after complete and it never came back up. I discovered the master switch upgraded but not the member. The member was sitting there with all amber lights on and frozen after the iOS load. The master wouldn't finish boot until I removed the member from the stack. I had a version mismatch and they would not communicate.

About an hour ago I had the master switch on one of my 3750x (WS-C3750X-48PF-S) stacks crash. The only two items we've found that could have caused this issue are the roughly 1.3 million big buffer misses and several of the following in the syslog
SLT:WARN:No exporter configured for smartlog! I do not have smartlogging turned on, nor is there a netflow exporter configured
sh logging smartlogsmartlog is disabledsmartlog exporter:smartlog pkt length: 64 Total pkts processed: 0Total DHCP Snooping pkts processed: 0Total DAI pkts processed: 0Total IPSG pkts processed: 0Total ACL pkts processed: 0
I did not see any traffic spikes prior to the crash.
This stack has been stable since it's last IOS upgrade from 12.2(58)SE1 to 12.2(58)SE2 back in October 2011 so this has me a little worried.

I would like to use flexstack to stack two Cisco 2960S 48 Port switches (2960S-48TD-L) for redundancy. Each switch will have a single 10G uplink into our Nexus 7K. One switch in the stack will terminate to linecard 6 (N7K-F248XP-25) and the other switch will terminate to linecard 7 (N7K-F248XP-25). My question is how many flexstack cables are needed? Do I need only one cable or do I need two to connect the two 2960s ?

I have 2 Catalyst 2960S-switches configured in a stack. The uplink is configured as a cross-stack etherchannel. Now I want to upgrade the stack with a minimum of downtime for the connected hosts. The hosts are connected to the stack via cross-stack etherchannels. So my question is: How can I upgrade the stack and reboot the members with a minimum of downtime? If I use the archive download-sw command with the /reload-option, the stack is reloaded and the result will be downtime for the hosts while th stack is reloading. Is it possible to upgrade the stack and then reboot the members one by one in a controlled manner?

We currently have as our stack master a 24 port Non-PoE that we want to replace with a 48 port Non-PoE. The 48 port switch at one time was provisioned as switch 3 in the stack (not the master). Correct me if I am wrong, but theoretically all I should need to do to get this working is to shut off the existing master so it re-elects a master and then provision the 48 port switch as the new switch one and make sure switch 1 has a high priority?
Do I need to write erase the switch that is replacing the current master first?

I want to replace an existing 3560 Switch with another switch of the same exact model and IOS. However, this switch that needs to be replaced is the VTP Server of my LAN at this location. When I replace the switch I will just use the same exact running config but I'm concerned about the vlan.dat file. Do I need to copy that file over to the new replacement switch and if so, what is the best way to do that?

I use the Switch 2960S support PoE and 10 access points cisco.I have one more question:
-- If all 10 access points cisco use copper cable to connect to 2960S, 5 access points use power adapter and 5 access points use power from Switch. How Switch 2960S will provide power for 10 AP or switch 2960S will understand and only provide power for 5 APs?

I have hybrid network in which I want to configure VLAN on Cisco 2960 S switch. I have unmanged switch where my DHCP server and other servers are connected. Now I created two VLANs on cisco 2960S and they don't talk each other, but as soon as I connect unmanaged switch to 2960S switch, both VLANs start communicating which I don't want. I want to listen server traffic from unmanaged switch from both VLANs but simultaneously I don't want to communication between two VLANs.

I have a problem with extending the LAN on a client site . They are looking to extend the LAN with a 2960S-series switch. Already in place is a 4510 switch which the 2960 is connected to via fibre. The 2 switches are both set up but there is no connectivity as I cant ping between them or anything. The management VLAN on the 2960 shows line up, protocol down, which I believe means the VLAN is enabled but there is a form of physical mismtach on the ports. I have attached the configs of both switches. I feel it might be a problem with GBIC module compatibility. The SFP installed on both ends of the switch are GLC-SX-MMD. On the 4510, the SFP sits in a twingig converter (CVR-X2-SFP) but there is no light on it at all when the cables are plugged in.
