Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560 - Connecting Fiber To HP 2510-48 Port Switch
Feb 19, 2012
In one location we have a HP 2510-48 port switch which we need to connect to a Cisco 3560 switch. The problem I have is that we have issues connecting fibre to the HP switch, so I have decided to attached a CAT 5 to Fibre convertor at this end and another to the cisco switch.
My question you can not connect a HP switch to a Cisco switch, is this true or do I just need to confirgure something on the ports.

I have a WS-X6816-10G-2T module with X2-10GB-SR modules. I will be getting a SMF hand off and the length of the termination is around 100 meters. (I will be getting another hand off for Inter-DC link for which I have X2-10GB-LR module). The question is can I connect this SMF hand off (short length) on the SR module?

I'm new to networking and was looking for some assistance. First off im using packet tracer to diagram my senario as I will be receiving my equipment next week to deploy.
Hardware to be used:
1. 2 catalyst 3560 switches
2. all connect to a sonic wall router
I have two companies that work in the same office space. I need to keep these companies seperate on their own vlan. They will however need to share the phone system.(Packet tracer file uploaded to give those who have the time to see what I put together.) [code]

I need to connect 4 Floor Building with 4 Cisco 2960 - 48 ports switch each other and it needs to be through a fiber. So all PCs connected to each switch would reach the LAN/WAN from the other switch. (attached is the image here with)
I see that the 2960 has 2 SFP ports each port of each switch should connect each other or how?
My simple question is:
1. What cable / patch code I have to use = Single-mode or Multimode? ( distance for each switch will not more then 25 mts)
2. Do I have to use SFP or SFP+ module?
3. What kind of SFP/SFP+ module I have to use = Single-mode or Multimode?
4. What kind of connector should patch code have = LC / SC or ?
5. How to connect each switch with redundancy like ...each switch should be interconnected with each other or I have to choose Cisco 3750G which has more then 2 SFP ports (option#1 & opetion#2 = attached here with) =
Best practice for connecting cisco switches over fiber.

We have a Site that is connected via Wireless Bridge to the Main Site, the site is on separate VLAN with Cisco 3560 switch. The main site has 6509 swith. Configuration as per attached diagram. We are connecting a fiber between the remote and the main site and adding a 3560E switch at the remote site, however we would like to keep the wireless connection as a backup in case the fiber is severed the wireless will be availble. Attached diagram shows detailed cofiguration. I would like to know what should I change to make this working. STP is enabled on all switches.

At a college we have Ciscos 2960 and are trying to setup VLAN tagging and also using RST or MST. The traffic on the jack should get tagged vlan 248.We were told by the college that Ciscos in the labs will not work with the Alcatel switch that provides access to the lab. That Alcatel is in Bridge 1x1 mode. The college will not change the configuration on the Alcatel. We got the Ciscos to do VLAN tagging and can get network access. However the spanning- tree is not read properly. Cisco does not properly read the Alcatel's RSTP (since the Alcatel is doing tagging on the BPDUs). It places the root of the spanning tree under vlan1 instead of vlan248.
The college strongly recommends HP Procurves and we are using that as test. The following is the configuration on the HP and it works with no effort (it reads the spanning-tree information as MST)We will end up getting HPs instead, if the Cisco cannot work with the Alcatels.

connecting a Cisco 3945 Router to an Ethernet WAN Link. The service provider has provided a 100M Ethernet Single Mode Fiber handoff to the customer premises with SC Connector. The CPE configuration proposed for this setup is like this. [code]
Since the SFP has LC Connector, i suppose i need to have an SC-LC Cable for connecting the Ethernet link. Do i need anything else, apart from above?

We would like to setup a link to our DR site that is separate from our main network traffic. This link will be used by an EMC VNX SAN for replication traffic. The SAN will be plugged into a fiber port on a 3750 switch and going out from the same switch (going in as multimode, going out as single mode) into a patch panel that runs over to the DR site (about a mile away). At the DR site it will go from the fiber panel into another 3750 switch which ends up going back out of that switch into our DR SAN.
I'm wondering what the best way would be to configure the fiber ports to accomplish this. I'm affraid that the replication traffic will find it's way over through another route and congest our main network unless configured appropriately.

I have an all gigE 3560. I don't use the management FE0 port on the back. I was thinking to use that for a 100Mbps WAN connection.
Seems to work just fine when I plugged in an test. But I am not routing across that link yet as I still need to setup the far end.
Is there any reason this would not work? I would like to not burn a gig port if the max throughput of the circuit is 100Mbps.

I had a strange issue yesterday when onsite installing a new access switch.Port capacity full on a two switch stack of 3750 x48 PS switches (WS-C3750- 48PS-E)- New 2960 x48 PS - WS-C2960S-48FPS-L racked, with the plan of using it just as an edge switch via SFP Stacking cable.Setup the two connecting ports with simple initial config: - switchport mode trunk- no encapsulation option on the 2960, default dot1q- dot1q set on 3750 port- no shut on both sides.Connected the SFP Stacking cable but it didnt work:- %PHY-4-SFP_NOT_SUPPORTED: The SFP in Gi1/0/1 is not supported
This is ok as I had a backup:- Next step tried using 2 x Short Haul SFP SX GBIC's with LC - LC OFNP 50/125 fibre patch lead - no joy- Extra backup of 2 x Long Haul SFP LX GBIC's with the same fibre patch - no joy- Checked the fibre and it was not a cross over so transmit and receive going down the same side, switchedand still would not come up.- Used Fibre as a straight through and still the same.In all cases there was no indication of any life in the connection. It is pointing to a faulty fibre patch lead but I know it has worked in the past. Could it be something to do with the config or device incompatibility? Or any setting I need to activate?

We have 2x WS-C3560X-48 with the 10Gb SFP C3KX-NM-10G module.I want to use the 10Gb SFP (with a redundant 1Gb link) between each of the switches.Below is the configuration what I think I should use. Is this correct?
SWITCH1
int TE1/1
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport mode trunk
channel-group 1 mode active
[code]....
We also want to utilise Link Agrrigation for the servers that attach to the switch. Would this config be correct?
port-channel load-balance src-ip
int range x
switchport mode access
switchport access vlan 1 (They are all on the default vlan)
spanning-tree portfast
channel-group x mode active
(Then I would configure the LACP config on the server) Is there anything I am missing?

Scenario: Two buildings connected with a private leased fiber line, so it does operate as a LAN. There are several subnets and everyone at both buildings needs to be able to access all subnets. However the physical machines on those subnets are building specific:
-Building 1: 10.2.0.0/24 (vlan20), 10.4.0.0/24 (vlan40), Internet connection
-Building 2: 10.1.0.0/24 (vlan10), 10.3.0.0/24 (vlan30)
The majority of the traffic between the subnets is specific to the buildings as well (i.e. most of the traffic is between 10.1 and 10.3 or 10.2 and 10.4).
Currently I have a Catalyst 3560 at Building 1 operating as the single "core" L3 router (and then a variety of switches connected to that). I have another 3560 at Building 2 that I'd like to turn in to the "master" L3 router for the two subnets primarily used by Building 2. In other words, make it so traffic from 10.1 to 10.3 doesn't have to run to building 1 just to get back to building 2.
I've got a basic knowledge of adding VLANs, VLAN interfaces and a static routes. The part that I'm getting confused on is that the Building 1 core router needs to make its default route to the firewall (and on to the internet) but "know" that traffic on vlans 10 and 30 gets sent across the fiber line to the other router. So I'm assuming this gets done with some combination of vlan definitions, vlan interfaces and static ip routes on each router.

I have issue with 3560 switch QoS configuration . I checked in cisco site about mentioned model QoS configuration.once we mark the frame and map the CoS to DSCP and once it enters into switch and it processes according to LAN QoS configured on interface
we have configured both the commands shape and share.
once it leaves the switch and enters into Edge router and if we do not have configured QoS in router which is normally MQC , how does it process each packet ?Do we need to have end to end QoS configured in LAN ?

The last few days I've been exploring options in getting rid of some old routers accross a wan connections. I have a cat 3560 to play with and I thought I would try and use the no switchport command test out routing with switch. I've got some type of route issue and I tried a few things which I thought would fix the issue but had no effect. I'll post the config and a few commands so you can see what the basic setup is.
Here we can see in the arp that it knows about both 10.7.1.2 (PC unable to ping 10.3.3.254) as well as 10.3.3.254 (ASA).I tried adding in a ip route of 10.7.0.0 255.255.0.0 10.3.3.110 as well as 10.3.3.254. Neither produced the results I wanted allowing 10.7.1.2 (PC) to ping the ASA (10.3.3.254). [code]

I have an environment of 3 X 3560G of which I have 1st switch-CORE(f0/10) connecting to the VPN router(CE) interface-f0/0. Remaining 2 Cisco 3560's(Access) are connected to Gi0/1 and Gi0/2 on the 1st switch-CORE via gi0/1 . On all three switches I have created multiple VLANs and assigned ports to these VLAN. The switch to switch connection is trunk allowing all VLANs created on all these 3 switches. Now the issue is how I am going to have all these VLANs routed through single interface on the routeri-e f0/0, as all these subnets will communicating to remote site over VPN. What should be default gateway on the 2 Access switches and the CORE switch, also what static route should be on router to reach all subnets(VLANs) created on these 3 switches.
I have read inter-VLAN routing i-e creating sub interfaces on router but dont want to proceed with that and looking for any other way to have my VLANs talk on all three switches and then are accessible to remote site ove VPN?
