Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509-E Switches Interconnected On Layer 3 Port Channel
Oct 3, 2012We are currently designing Layer 3 to the edge EIGRP solution for our customers. The network is a hybrid of collapsed core (Core to access) as well as a three layer design (Core/Distro/Access) for connectivity to the Data Centre, Internet, Wireless Blocks etc.The core of the network contains two 6509-E switches interconnected on a Layer 3 Port channel (no VSS). Access Layer switches (3750-X series running Stackwiseplus protocol) connect to the core switches over p2p routed links and Distribution layer switches (3750X stackwiseplus) provide connectivity to the Data centre, Internet, wireless blocks etc.
The access and distribution switch stacks(Cisco 3750-X) are set up with two or three member switches with uplinks multihomed to the primary and secondary core switch with each uplink included in EIGRP. In each of the stacks, one of the switches controls the operation of the stack, which will be the stack master.As the Cisco Stackwise architecture is not SSO-capable but NSF aware, all Layer 3 fuctions must be re-established during a master switch outage. To minimize control plane impact and improve Layer3 convergence, uplinks should be diverse and originate from the member switches instead of the Master switches in the respective stack. This is as per Cisco recommended design solution.The above solution can be setup if there are more than two switches in the stack. i.e. uplinks are configured on the backup member switch modules.
1.But what about stack with two switches..Which switch should be set up as the Master for a two member stack with uplinks to the core primary and secondary from each switch(Master and Backup)
2. For Layer 3 routing, does the routing takes precedene over switch failures? Say for eg. In a two member stack, the master switch with uplink to primary fails, does EIGRP provide a fast convergence to route traffic via backup secondary and does not wait for the control plane on the switch stack to converge? All the access to core links will be set up for ECMP.

Jul 30, 2012Configured Layer 3 portchannel from 6500VSS enabled switch to two different 6500 standalone switch. Configured first ip on VSS switch, second ip on standalone switch1 and third IP on standalone switch2. My question is
1. Will the portchannel be up?
2. If port channel is up, will I able to ping the connected IP's.

Apr 22, 2012I have 2 Cisco 6509 switches linked together via single Fibre as a trunk.I want to change this to a port channel where I will add another 3 fibre ports to the port channel but what order do I do this to minimise any disruption.
1-Configure PortChannel and add the 3 new ports, this will bring up the Port Channel but what effect will this have on traffic currently going over the single Trunk link? Will spanning tree go mad, how will switches react?
2-Convert existing Trunk link to Portchannel then add in new ports to PortChannel, I guess in doing this there will be a small hit on traffic as it changes to a port channel.

Feb 26, 2012I have a switch layer 6500 series connected to a firewall, the port configuration between them is layer 2, in another words I do not configure an IP address in the Cisco switch port to conected it in the firewall, but when a apply a policy on firewall it lose communication with others vlans, just the vlan that is connected between the switch and firewall works, attachment the design. I think that is necessary to configure the connection between the firewall and switch as layer 3 ( a port with IP address in the switch), but I would like to know why? The switch is configured with about 10 vlan and it is a inter vlan routing, a default route is configured in the switch where the gateway is the firewall.

1-Will it still possible to run VPLS over dark fibre? Because all the documents I read regarding VPLS are deployed over MPLS backbone.
2-Any sample configuration for implementation VPLS in ASR1000 ?

May 19, 2013We were going to create a 2 port, layer 3 etherchannel between a 1002 router and a 3750X layer 3 core switch. We wanted to create bunled link between them but, now we are going to be putting a Riverbed device between the router and core switch. Because of this, would it be best to abandon the idea of creating a layer 3 etherchannel and just have 2 links from the router and core switch and have traffic load balance between the 2 links?The Riverbed will have 2 connections into it from the Core switch and 2 connections into it from the 1002 router. I was hoping to keep the layer 3 etherchannel but, do you think it would be best to create 2, /29 nets and have the router/Riverbed and Core Switch/Riverbed load balance.

May 14, 2012I have a 7206vxr with a NPE-G1 card in it. I am planning to add some PA-GE card with a ws-g5486 to light single mode Gigabit dark fibre.
it seems that users are experiencing throughput of around 200Mbps. Is this per card, or for the entire chasis? I have 6 free slots, if i were to fill 3 of them up with PA-GE card would i get 200Mbps on each card ?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750X / 6509 - Trunking Over Single Mode Fiber
Oct 26, 2011 I'm having a problem with some new gear and can't seem to figure it out. I have a 3750X-48P-S with a C3KX-10G-NM using SFP-10G-LR transceivers and I'm trying to trunk that with a 6509 that has a X2-10G-LR transceiver over single mode fiber. This is not working. Cisco TAC says the SFP+'s that we just got brand new are both bad and we need to order new ones. I find that hard to believe but who knows.
The switch recognized the module and I tested all 4 ports in gigabit mode using GLC-SX-MM transceivers, all worked great. I have the SFP+'s in tengig1/1/1 and 1/1/2 as they should be. There are no other SFP's in the module either.
When I do a sho int tengig1/1/1 and 1/1/2 the media type doesn't show the transceiver that is installed like it does for the GLC-SX-MM ones. Maybe it's not supposed to or maybe it just doesn't recognize them and it's a hardware issue.

Oct 25, 2011I understand that jumbo frames need to be enabled end-to-end. I have two ESX hosts connected at each site. I want to enable jumbo frames for those ports, but what if not all host on the ESX are using jumbo frames, will I have drops and connection failures? So if i have two sites, each with a 6509 connected via a trunk and need to enable jumbo frames for a vlan between the sites how do I accomplish this?If I enable jumbo frames on the trunk link how does that impact other traffic between the sites?

Dec 17, 2012Anyway, here's the situation I'm trying to configure several VLANs on my ASA to uniquely allocate to contexts, the VLANs will be trunked from my VSS. Unfortunately I'm not clear on how to achieve this, the configuration guide for 8.4 talks about multiple contexts and routed setups all which don't appear to apply exactly. I've configured the port channel at both ends and I've configured sub-interfaces on the port channel and assigned VLAN IDs. These sub-interfaces are then allocated to the contexts to set 'ip address' etc. I've not been able to successfully test this configuration and I am concerned that it is incorrect..

Jun 18, 2012We would like to setup a link to our DR site that is separate from our main network traffic. This link will be used by an EMC VNX SAN for replication traffic. The SAN will be plugged into a fiber port on a 3750 switch and going out from the same switch (going in as multimode, going out as single mode) into a patch panel that runs over to the DR site (about a mile away). At the DR site it will go from the fiber panel into another 3750 switch which ends up going back out of that switch into our DR SAN.
I'm wondering what the best way would be to configure the fiber ports to accomplish this. I'm affraid that the replication traffic will find it's way over through another route and congest our main network unless configured appropriately.
