Jan 16, 2012
find out which types of fiber optic that i can connect to three types of switches. the setup that i have that there are:8 access switches (WS-C2960S-24TS-S), in each one there is two SFP connections.2 aggregate switches WS-C3750X-24T-S, in each one there is four SFP connections.and one core switches that has SFP card WS-X4624-SFP-E? Note that the fiber optic that we have coming from filed are multimode.

We have two switches WS-C2960S-24TS-L running in stack with running IOS c2960s-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE3.We have connected two checkpoint devices on Gi1/0/24 and Gi2/0/24 with a simple configuration:
interface range GigabitEthernet1/0/24, gi2/0/24
switchport access vlan x
switchport mode access
spanning-tree portfast
On the devices log we get the following message:
%SW_MATM-4-MACFLAP_NOTIF: Host 0000.0000.fe21 in vlan x is flapping between port Gi2/0/24 and port Gi1/0/24
The mac-address 0000.0000.fe21 is not found on any checkpoint interface. "Show mac-address int gi1/0/24 or gi2/0/24" does not show the correct mac-address of the checkpoint interface connected to the port, but instead shows 0000.0000.fe21.Is there a bug in the IOS, something wrong with the switch config or does it have something to do with the checkpoint config?

I have a got a requirement where a 24 Port Switch should have 4 SFP's and all 4 should be used at a time, So I've chosen " WS-C2960S-24TS-L"
The transeiver should be GLC-LH-SM, so kindly let me no whether I would be able to use all 4 ports at a time or not.

I just received three WS-C2960S-24TS-Land three WS-C3560E-48TD-S switches that i entered the Express Setup on as usual. On two of each type of switch i found the default network that is used to facilitate the Express Setup was 10.0.1.1 and the others used an IP range of 10.0.2.1, i realized this is a small negligible at best difference though i need to provide management with an answer as to why there is a difference between the two and can’t find anything online as to why there is a difference or something that proves there should be a difference. All the documentation I find sounding Express Setup notes that the IP range will be 10.0.1.1 not 10.0.2.1

When it comes to fiber optics my knowledge is very limited. All I know is that they can carry data at high bandwidth for a long range at blazing speeds etc.My boss has asked me to link several buildings to the network and I am led to believe that joining them through fiber optics to be best since we are expecting a lot of data traffic between.I have done the normal RJ-45 networking with Gigabit networking in my organisation but need your assistance on how to join each of the buildings through fibre optics. So far this is my plan.Draw up the fiber optic lines from the main building to each building. All the buildings have Gigabit Cat6e cabling and network in each.I am planning on using a single mode media converter to convert the end of the fibre optic to the normal RJ45 connector and plug it to each switch at each of the ends of the fiber optic cable .Am I going in the correct direction?I don't even know the gadgematics required except for the cables them selves, crimping tools, the media converter. There is about 300-400 metres in between of each building from the main building. Also, I believe that we need to create cross over cables as in the normal way we do in connecting 2 switches. Your input is very valuable to me.

I was looking at WS-C2960S-48FPS-L (740 Watts) and WS-C2960S-48LPS-L (340 Watts) models today, I'm not sure that I understand it right,
Does WS-C2960S-48FPS-L model support all 48 ports POE+ (30Watts)? Does that mean each port will get 30 Watts on this switch?
Does model WS-C2960S-48LPS-L support 24 ports with POE and 24 ports with POE+?.

How many Switches can be stacked with WS-C2960S-48FPD-L at a max..
As per my Knowledge it is 4 and as below..
Switch 1 to Switch 2
Switch 2 to Switch 3
Switch 3 to Switch 4
Switch 4 to Switch 1
If yes then, is it mandatory to do the "Switch 4 to Switch 1" stack. why am I asking this is because this stack requires a long cable and the cable which comes with the Switch is only 0.5M.

I am facing the following issue. In our environment we have a couple of WS-C2960S-24TS-L configured as stack. These switches are configured as VTP mode transparent. We are running LMS 4.1 and although UserTracking Acquisition works fine for all other switches, it only runs on demand for the above. The user tracking report for these switches shows only the MAC of the connected end hosts, without the respective IP address. The vlan I am interested in is configured on both the gateway (cisco 6509) and the switches, and the subnet is routable.Show arp on the gateway does show the "mac-ip address" binding, so I would have thought that usertracking would have been able to report both IP and MAC.
Why does usertracking only run on demand for the above switches in vtp mode transparent? Why does the UserTracking report show only the MAC and not the IP?Are the above issues related to the vtp mode? I have ruled out any connection to the switch-model, because we have recently installed the same switches in VTP mode client and User Tracking Acquisition works fine for them.

My company is beginning to have a lot of sites were we are stacking 3 to 4 C2960S-48 switche. This is making "show running-config" very very long because of the 4 x 48 interfaces.I can’t find a CLI command that show me the running-config of a ranges of interfaces. If I for example would like to see running-config for switch 3 (interfaces 3/0/1-52)The Show Running-config will show all the interfaces (for the two first swtiche = 104 interfaces), which take a time before I reach to switch 3.I miss a CLI command like: show Running-config switch 3, or module 3, or show running-config interface range x/x/x-x ?I’m well aware of the CLI command show running-config interface x/x/x, but this will only show me one interface.

Our network administrator restricts all our new 1Gb switches to only 100Mb, to which he claims it will increase overall performance. Preventing devices from bottlenecking the network. (that is, only restricting the main switch ports, not the uplinks)For example we have a new building with 2x WS-C2960S-48TS-L connected together with FlexJack and then a 1Gb Fiber connection back to our core switch.
This building is on it's own subnet and there is little broadcast traffic. I don't see the point other than it hinders the potential speed we could use. Labs are set up in this building and 1Gb is MUCH faster when it comes to imaging and software deployment.

We're planning to install 24 strand singlemode fiber optic cable in three ocations. What is the best way to run the cables between the 3 locations. Location 1 is in the south, 2 is in the middle and 3 is in the north pretty much in a straight line.Should we run one fiber optic cable from location 1 to location 2 and another fiber optic cable from location 1 to location 3 or is there a better way? Maybe we can run from 1 to 2, 2 to 3 so that location 2 acts like a hub.Is there a way to just run one fiber optic cable from location 1 to 3 and along the way somehow splice that cable to go to location 2

I got new internet last Thursday. It is fiber optic through VTX1. I am running windows 7. I can connect to the internet just fine directly but when I try the netgear it tells me No Internet Connection. When I go through the setup process it tells me No Ethernet Cable is Plugged Into The Router Internet Port. When I hook up my very old Cisco router the internet and Wi-fi work just fine. I have updated the drivers and have windows firewall off. This is it plugged directly in:

Company I work for just moved into a new location. We have two data closets which are patched as independent entities, with no Ethernet tie connection. These closets are roughly 100 feet apart.
There is a fiber connection that runs between both closets, that the previous tenant used to connect the switches. I have placed a Cisco 2960 switch in each location, and added one mini SFP gbic's to each switch. After attaching both sides, neither light up. I do a sh inter gig1/0/49 on each and shows 'down down' (not admin down).
What is the trick on getting these to communciate, do I need to configure these ports, and are they supposed to light up?
What I am trying to accomplish is to get the one closet that is completely cut off, communicating by logically stacking, or 'daisy chaining' via fiber.
I turned off the lights and popped the fiber out, and I do see a faint red light (I did not look straight into it), so I think the fiber is active.

I need to connect 4 Floor Building with 4 Cisco 2960 - 48 ports switch each other and it needs to be through a fiber. So all PCs connected to each switch would reach the LAN/WAN from the other switch. (attached is the image here with)
I see that the 2960 has 2 SFP ports each port of each switch should connect each other or how?
My simple question is:
1. What cable / patch code I have to use = Single-mode or Multimode? ( distance for each switch will not more then 25 mts)
2. Do I have to use SFP or SFP+ module?
3. What kind of SFP/SFP+ module I have to use = Single-mode or Multimode?
4. What kind of connector should patch code have = LC / SC or ?
5. How to connect each switch with redundancy like ...each switch should be interconnected with each other or I have to choose Cisco 3750G which has more then 2 SFP ports (option#1 & opetion#2 = attached here with) =
Best practice for connecting cisco switches over fiber.
