How To Create Fiber Optic Network

Jul 23, 2012

When it comes to fiber optics my knowledge is very limited. All I know is that they can carry data at high bandwidth for a long range at blazing speeds etc.My boss has asked me to link several buildings to the network and I am led to believe that joining them through fiber optics to be best since we are expecting a lot of data traffic between.I have done the normal RJ-45 networking with Gigabit networking in my organisation but need your assistance on how to join each of the buildings through fibre optics.Draw up the fiber optic lines from the main building to each building. All the buildings have Gigabit Cat6e cabling and network in each.I am planning on using a single mode media converter to convert the end of the fibre optic to the normal RJ45 connector and plug it to each switch at each of the ends of the fiber optic cable .I don't even know the gadgematics required except for the cables them selves, crimping tools, the media converter. There is about 300-400 metres in between of each building from the main building. Also, I believe that we need to create cross over cables as in the normal way we do in connecting 2 switches.

Location 1 is in the south, 2 is in the middle and 3 is in the north pretty much in a straight line.Should we run one fiber optic cable from location 1 to location 2 and another fiber optic cable from location 1 to location 3 or is there a better way? Maybe we can run from 1 to 2, 2 to 3 so that location 2 acts like a hub.Is there a way to just run one fiber optic cable from location 1 to 3 and along the way somehow splice that cable to go to location 2

Cisco Switches :: Adapting Fiber SC Connector To SRW2048?

Jan 4, 2013

Trying to replace 3Com Superstack II Switches (3C16980) with 100Base-FX Modules (3C16970) with a Cisco solution. Existing Fiber connector in Network closet on both ends is an SC connector (picture attached). What Modules, adapter cables do I need to connect to an SRW2048 switch at one end an SRW2024 switch at the other? Will this solution provide a Gigabit connection over the Fiber ?

I am looking at using SRW2048-K9-NA with MGBSX1 module at one closet and SRW2024-K9-NA with MGBSX1 module in the other closet at the other end of the Fiber cable.

I found an adapter cable that will convert an SC male to an LC Male and it looks like it will work but I have no experience with fiber. I attached a picture of this adapter as well. It is listed on line as  - 1ft Fiber Optic Adapter Cable LC (Male) to SC (Female) Multimode 62.5/125 Duplex

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Internet Connection With Linksys SRW2048 Switch?

Jan 2, 2013

I have a problem with my switch. The model no. of the switch is as follows:

Linksys SRW2048 10/100/1000 48 Ports
Serial No: RJT00GC00395 GGR2906 MM

1. I am creating a home computer lab. I do have 3 servers HP ProLiant DL 385 G1. Two of them have 6 gigabit ports where as the third server has 2 gigabit ports.

2. Installed ESXi 5.1 on two servers where as installed FreeNAS on the third server and configured it as iSCSI storage and NFS storage.

Problem:

1. Every port works perfectly fine. However, when I keep connecting the ports of the switch to the ports of servers, internet gets disconnected.

2. Interestingly, my wireless internet also gets disconnected, the ports of the switch does not have any internet now.

3. This happens till I connect above 8-9 ports of the switch  to the servers.

3. However, when I remove the connection between the switch and the servers, internet comes, wireless internet starts working; and the port of the switch also gets internet connection when I check the internet connection of the individual ports one at a time.

Some more information:i do have internet service provided by Time Warner Cable. My internet speed is as follows:

Download Speed: Up to 15 Mbps
Upload Speed: Up to 1 Mbps

I do have a modem *** router by Motorola which has 4 gigabit ports.Model no: Motorola SURFboard SBG6580 i am assuming it is some thing related to bandwidth of the internet.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: SRW2048 Limited Or No Connectivity

May 14, 2012

I have a Win 2003 server set up as my DHCP server. It is connected to port 13 of my SRW2048 switch.

Every port from 1-12 and from 25-36 get a "Limited or No Connectivity" error when I plug an ethernet cable in them from a computer (Win XP). However, all of the other ports receive an IP address and connect to our network just fine. I've noticed that they are all in the two right hand banks of ports, though, so I'm in need of assistance as to how I can get the first two banks of ports to behave the same way. In other words, I want all of the ports on the switch to be able to populate an IP address from the DHCP server attached to port 13.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Connect PC With Fiber Cable On Supervisor WS-X45-SUP6L-E Of 4500E?

I have a problem connecting a PC in a TwinGig Convertors (GLC-LH-SM). I want to connect a PC with a fiber cable on the supervisor WS-X45-SUP6L-E of my Switch 4500E.

The default configuration mode is X2. As I want to deploy Gigabit interfaces (that is, use TwinGig Convertors), then I configured the associated port-group:

Switch(config)#hw-module module 1 port-group 2 select gigabitethernet
*Feb 24 06:18:37.125: Port Te1/2: TwinGig Converter inserted: vendor: CISCO
Switch(config)#do sh int status mod 1
Port      Name               Status       Vlan       Duplex  Speed Type

[code]....

I noted that the Swicth set up automatically 'switchport mode trunk', so i put the command 'swicthport mode access' because i want to connect only a PC. But the status is the same, I can not achieve connectivity. i just want to know how connect a PC in the interface GigabitEthernet1/4 of the supervisor engine of my Switch.

Now  I was wondering if it would be an idea to use the EA4500 (which i have  here aswell, though atm not in use) instead of the 2911.does the 2911 offer that much more power and speed that it would be  unwise to use a EA4500 on Fiber?

Linksys Cable / DSL :: How To Connect Fiber Box To X3000

Apr 2, 2013

I have X3000 home gateway and very happy with this device. Use it now as ADSL modem/wifi router. Everything works fine but there is something I do not understand about this device. It has 4 LAN ports and a Cable port. Suppose, I am upgraing from a copper service to fibre. Fibre providers comes and installs their fibre box which is kind of a "modem" for fibre technology. how do I connect fibre box to X3000? Do I use Cable port or a LAN port?

As far as I understand the 4 LAN ports work as switch ports (work at OSI level 2, provide access strictly within same subnet, all devices connected to these ports share the same default gateway), and Cable port gets a different IP address via DHCP or another protocol from the fibre box, or directly from ISP (if we have PPPoE or IPoE service as an example). And there would be no point in plugging WAN link into a LAN port as X3000 would not be able to communicate to the gateway on the other end of the cable.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 4503-E Cannot Bring SFP Fiber Interfaces Up

Sep 2, 2012

I am trying to connect a 6509 switch to a 4503-E switch using single mode dark fiber over a distance of less than half a mile. Although a routine task, it does not work..We have a care 6509 switch where we concentrate all of our dark fiber connections for our remote sites. The 6509 switch already has 30 remote sites, most of them with 4503-E switches, connected in this way therefore it is a tested scenario. For the connections we use the GLC-LH-SM SFPs on both switches. Out of these 30 sites we had a similar problem with two of them, which we solved with the use of CWDM SFPs. With the CWDMs the fiber came up right away. However, I cannot keep using this solution because it is way too expensive! I had the losses of the fiber measured end-to-end and they are negligible (>0.5 dB).

In this latest case, like I said, we could not bring the connection up between the core 6509 switch and the 4503-E switch using the GLC-LH-SM SFPs. I then replaced the 4503-E switch with a 3560 and the link came up! Then I tried using a CWDM-SFP in the 4503-E, while keeping the GLC-LH-SM SFP in the 6509 and the link came alive again! Of course we already tried replacing the fiber patch cords with no luck. [code] I find it very weird for the link to work with the 3560 or with a CWDM in the 4503 but NOT with the SFP in the 4503!

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Fiber Connection Between Two 2960 Switches?

Mar 22, 2012

Company I work for just moved into a new location.  We have two data closets which are patched as independent entities, with no Ethernet tie connection. These closets are roughly 100 feet apart.

There is a fiber connection that runs between both closets, that the previous tenant used to connect the switches.  I have placed a Cisco 2960 switch in each location, and added one mini SFP gbic's to each switch.  After attaching both sides, neither light up.  I do a sh inter gig1/0/49 on each and shows 'down down' (not admin down).

What is the trick on getting these to communciate, do I need to configure these ports, and are they supposed to light up?

What I am trying to accomplish is to get the one closet that is completely cut off, communicating by logically stacking, or 'daisy chaining' via fiber.

I turned off the lights and popped the fiber out, and I do see a faint red light (I did not look straight into it), so I think the fiber is active.
