I have a stable l2tp/ipsec config that I have been using for many years with the Windows XP native VPN client and the iPhone VPN client.This configuration does not seem to work with the native Windows 7 VPN client. What has changed between XP and 7 on the native VPN client front? I'm running IOS 12.4(15)T5.

Error that I'm retrieving is always the same: Error 789: "The L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered a processing error during initial negotiations with the remote computer"
But I'm able to establish l2tp/ipsec vpn connection to the same vpn server with my iPhone 4.
Below is isakmp debug log from lns router(cisco 1921) when I've tried to establish vpn with windows client. Anything useful from these logs to point me on the right direction to finally solve this problem with windows clients.

We have a Cisco ASA 5520
We are attempting to setup RRAS on Windows 2008R2 using L2TP. Server is on the inside of the network at 10.10.10.20 our ASA is 10.10.10.1 its outside interface is 68.0.0.0.3/28.
I set a static NAT rule to allow all traffic pointed at 68.0.0.4 to be directed to 10.10.10.20 and have ACLs allowing the following.
esp, ah, udp/500, udp/4500, udp/1701
Mac Clients have no issues with but windows clients seem to hang and never connect. I know the ASA configuration is somehow to blame, if I attempt to connect to LAN IP (10.10.10.20) from withn the same network every thing works fine (making sure all the Windows Issues are covered).We have 2 other IPSEC tunnels established to teh ASA from our COLO and a Satalite office, not sure if this makes it any harder.
I have set up a remote access ipsec vpn on an asa 5520. I can connect, and ping internal ip addresses, however I cannot ping back out to the internet, and dns resolution does not work.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup a L2TP over IPSEC vpn connection on a PIX 501 that will use key sharing. In addition, I have a PPTP connection setup which allows connectivity. Two things, the L2TP vpn client I am using does not connect and times out. The second is that the PPTP client I use does connect, but cannot ping any resources on the network.

I am trying to get a L2TP/IPSEC VPN going on one of my servers behind the DIR655 router I have used Port Forwarding and Virtual Server and neithere seem to allow these ports to be open in either situation a port scan shows the ports closed..My ISP (Comcast) does not block these ports?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI had my PPTP VPN working great at my old place, now that I moved I also upgraded my speed which means I got a different 2Wire. This 2Wire can only do DMZ mode and can't bridge. ( I tried everything, including the mdc page, no go). This works fine apart from blocking GRE somehow. I'm using a Mikrotik RB450G as my PPTP server. Does L2TP or IPSEC use the GRE protocol?

I think my VPDN configuration from Cisco side is not correct, but I cannot find configuration examples for this kind of solution.
I have a 5510 that i have configured for L2TP over IPSEC, not using AnyConnect. The first, and most prevelant being, VPN clients are unable to ping/access any of the hosts that are assigned a static NAT from the inside interface to the outside interface. I was able to circumvent this by adding another static NAT to the public interface for the incoming clients, but this caused intermittent connectivity issues with inside hosts. The second issue involves DNS. I have configured two DNS servers, both of which reside on the internal network and are in the split_tunnel ACL for VPN clients, but no clients are using this DNS. What is the workaround for using split tunneling AND internal DNS servers, if any?
i've had two different CCNA's look at this numerous times to no avail. A ping from a VPN client to any internal host works fine, unless it is one that is NAT'd. You can see in the config where i added the extra STATIC NAT to try and fix the issue. And this works perfectly across the tunnel but only intermittenly from the internal 10.1.4.x network. [code]
Co-worker just got a Blackberry Playbook tablet and, try as I might, we cannot get the darn thing to successfully set up a working IPSEC/L2TP vpn tunnel to our ASA 5510, which acts as a multi-purpose VPN concentrator. Any luck setting up L2TP/IPSEC VPN to ASA from Blackberry Playbook?

If i try to connect with a Windows 7 Client (NOT behind NAT) I get the Error 691.
I see that Phase 1/2 are working with debug:

I have added an ASA 5510 to my network between the Internet and a Windows 2008R2 server running ForeFront TMG. Before the ASA was added, vpn clients using Microsoft Windows 7 vpn client using L2TP/IPsec connected to our vpn. After ASA was added, clients can no longer connect. I would like to know how to configure the ASA to forward the vpn requests to the ForeFront TMG server for authentication and access to internal network resources. Mail is forwarded appropriately through the ASA to internal mail server and Internet access for LAN users works just fine.
Topology:
ASA 5510 (outside interface is ISP IP address, inside interface is 192.168.1.1)................Forefront TMG (outside nic 192.168.1.2, inside nic is LAN gateway IP address).

View 1 Replies View Relatedwe have made migration from CISCO 2821 to ASR1002-X.Cisco router is used as LNS for our ADSL links, using L2TP protocol. On 2821, everything worked fine. Migrating with same config on ASR1002-X, everything worked except L2P sessions.
We wanted to debug but no debug is displayed about L2TP or PPP in console with commands :
- debug aaa authentication
- debug aaa authorization
- debug radius
- debus vpdn l2x-events
- debus vpdn l2x-errors
- debus vpdn l2x-packet
- debug ppp negotiation
- debug ppp authentication
We don't understand why no debug log ??? Is it a bug in IOS XE ?show vpdn session all and show vpdn tunnel all gave "%No active L2TP tunnels"

Currently running a pair of 5520 as VPN routers. running 8.0.3, been using only Anyconnect SSL VPN for end users. These boxes do nothing else except serve VPN clients.However, recently we tried testing some IPSEC clients and are realizing that the Anyconnect SSL VPN clients is about 10x slower than the IPSEC client.From my house, downloading either CIFS or FTP, I can pull pretty close to 1.0mbps, while using Anyconnect, I pull 0.1mbps. What could be causing this slowdown? Should SSL VPN performance be on par with IPSEC? Clients all are windows 7, 64 bit. and the testing is being conducted on the same device.
View 8 Replies View RelatedThe network design is a hub and spoke using a carrier provided MPLS network with a ASA 5520 at the hub that has a IPSec tunnel to another part of the company.This configuration has worked for sometime now (long before I came to the company a couple of months ago).The thing that does not make sense to me is that the those networks out on the spokes did not have a route to the inside interface network of the ASA. With the way this MPLS works, if a network is not in the MPLS network routing tables it will not pass that network. The network was not in the MPLS network, nor was it in any of our edge routers connecting to the MPLS.
These hub networks did have routes both in the MPLS and edge devices for the networks on the other side of the IPSec tunnel and have been reaching them for some time.So what I am trying to understand is how it is possible for these hosts that have no route to the ASA inside interface network, but do have routes to the remote networks, how are they able to successfully pass that traffic? There are no NAT devices between these WAN hosts and the ASA.
I have a client that uses the ASA 5520 as both a firewall and VPN termination device. Day to day VPN usage is 30-50 users and the memory (512 MB) is typically at 50% while the CPU is mostly under 30%. I've suggested the RAM be upgrade to 1GB.The client would like to add a large block of VPN users which could see 250-300 concurrent users. What kind of a system resource hit should the expect with this level of load?

I made the following changes Remove Access VPN > Certificate Management > Identity Certificates > Add Certificate.Then I made the following change.. Remote Access VPN > Network (Client) Access > IPSec(IKEv1) Connection Profiles > Connection Profile > Edit > IKE Peer Authentication > Pre Shared key and pointed the identity certificate to the one I created in the step above.Having made this change I am still able to VPN without a certificate configured in authentication settings.I was expecting that the VPN would attempt to issue the self assigned cert to client machine?

We currently only require the user to enter the RSA passcode and username to authentication (RSA/AD username are identical). Is there a way to have the user authenticate via RSA and have the user's AD group membership (TX) assign the user the specific IE proxy settings? We are utilizing an ASA 5520 on 8.2, but we are willing to upgrade to newer IOS or even consider anyconnect to resolve this issue.

Requirement :Will configure a domain and assign two public IP address from 2 service providers. Will set the priority for the public ip address and do the manual change during the ISP failure.We will provide the domain name to the clients to setup the IPSEC VPN.So incase of failure by one ISP, we will change the priority in the domain to point to the availble address.So that we can reduce the downtime and no need of configuring new IPSEC VPN tunnels.
Question :Whether we can achieve this in Cisco ASA 5520.Or do we have an alternate solution to overceome this solution.

I wish to configure the same CISCO871 in order to establish a LAN-to-LAN IP sec Tunnel with another CISCO871 at the same time in order to reach private network. So, I have followed the Cisco procedure Document ID: 71462 "LAN-to-LAN IP sec Tunnel Between Two Routers Configuration Example"; it works, I can reach the peer private network BUT ONLY when the IP SEC tunnel with ASA is not established.
It seems to be a routing problem...I don't find how to configure to make both tunnels up and functional at the same time.
I have two ASA 5520 units, both running version 8.3(2) code. Among many other uses, they have an IPSec tunnel between them to link office 1 and office 3 together. Office 2 does exist, and is connected to a different port on the ASA in office 3; there is no IPSec involved with office 3.
