Cisco Routers :: RVS4000 And RV042G IPS In Domestic Setting

Dec 15, 2012

I have used an RVS4000 v1 for some years now as part of my domestic network. In particular I have an extensive Sonos distributed audio system, and I use the RVS4000's Static IP Mapping feature to assign a fixed IP to each and every Sonos box. It all works perfectly.

However, earlier this year my ISP (Virgin Media) upped my broadband service from 20Mbps to 60Mbps, without extra cost. Very kind of them, excellent! Their new SuperHub was initially installed in its factory default state, mainly because the several technicians who got involved with it's installation did not know how to go about putting it into Stand Alone Cable Modem mode. I did not want to use either its router, switch or wifi access point, preferring instead to stick with my perfectly good Cisco alternative {RVS4000+3xWAP4410Ns}.

After they gave up, I successfully altered the firmware revision and box settings to put it to SACM mode. But first I checked its speed. As supplied, it came in at about 63Mbps download and 2.8Mbps upload. The same speedtest.net test once set as SACM, and connected to my RVS4000 got just around 21Mbps download, 2.8Mbps upload. Disable the RVS4000 Intruder Protection System (IPS) and throughput matches the SuperHub on its own, 67Mbps down, 2.8Mbps up.

My conclusions...
1) The upload speed is virtually a constant irrespective of my equipment configuration, and will be ignored for the rest of this post.
2) Because of the need to open every packet for inspection, my RVS4000's processor just cannot handle this amount of data, and effectively is throttling my throughput down to the same rate I was getting before my ISP improved the service. So now I have a 60Mbps service, but unless I disable IPS, cannot actually get the benefit of it. Not good enough!

After lots of reading on the various Cisco sites, I recently purchased a Cisco RV042G router. Its 800Mbps spec suggests throughput will not be an issue. An in fact that is confirmed by running speedtest.net, where results of 62Mbps/2.8Mbps are surprisingly marginally lower than the RVS4000/IPS Disabled, but OK. I now also discover that the RV042G does not have IPS.

My network-savvy colleague said "To be honest IPS is a luxury you don't really need IMHO. You must be in a tiny minority in terms of home users with such a feature. It's such a drain on resources because it's examining the contents of every packet to see whether it recognises an attack signature. Standard residential gateway routers don't do it. They have a regular NAT function, which automatically blocks any unsolicited inbound connections, and a firewall to keep out any broadcast traffic."

Given his comment, and my experience with the two routers, I am on the verge of returning the RV042G for a refund as it seems to be adding nothing new that I need. But first I would like to hear the considered opinions of the community users:-

1) Simply put, should I just stick with my RVS4000 and run it with IPS off, as I have it set now?
2) How important is IPS in a domestic setting?
3) Is there another similar Small Business product that I should be looking at? I do not particularly want a router with integral wifi, but I could consider replacing both the RVS4000 and the adjacent WAP4410N with a suitable all-in-one.

I am running out of time to send the RV042G back to my supplier.

Cisco Routers :: Setting Up RVS4000 Behind A Uverse Motorola Router?

Feb 21, 2012

Trying to set up the Cisco VPN router for remote acces to our network. We have ATT Uverse DSL and it is a Motorola Router, i think NGT 510.the Uverse router has very limited setup options.I cannot set it up as a bridge. The only thing I can figure out is to set the ip passthrough option to the VPN router. We have a static ip address for our internet service.

I have tried several setup and connection options, but cannot get it to work.

1.  How to physically connect the routers and network devices?

2.  How to setup both routers to play nice.

Cisco Routers :: RVS4000 Private Networking Setting Up VLANs?

Jan 23, 2013

I live in a two family residential house and we share a common fibre connection to the internet. In the basement we have a modem/router(zyxel) which is in "bridge mode".  Therefore not acting as DHCP. Behind this zyxel we have a Cisco RVS4000 router. Ports 1 and 2 go to family A, and Ports 3 and 4 go to family B. Family A and B have separate routers which are both set to "access point mode". Family A has an ASUS RT-N66U router while family B has a dlink DIR-615. The asus has an "access point mode" while the dlink needs to be set up manually to achieve this. The dlink must also have a static IP adress. The asus can receive ip adress.

What I have unsuccessfully tried to achieve and am currently trying to separate the networks so that both families can access internett, but at the same time it must be impossible to access VLAN1(Family A) from VLAN2(Family B) vice versa. Meaning no communication between the two families through the local network.

I have tried different options but I am not sure how to deal with trunk, tagged, untagged etc. etc. etc. It seems every time I manage to create two different networks there is still accessability/communication between the two VLANs and everytime I manage to give out different IP adresses to different ports i.e. 192.168.10.xx and 192.168.2.xx it is still possible to communicate. What also usually happens is that the internetconnection is severed at the same time.

Linksys Wired Router :: Setting Up RVS4000 For VPN Clients?

Apr 21, 2011

I've looked through the documentation that came with the router and there is no instructions on how to configure the 4000 to accept remote clients and access the local network.  What the configurations are so a client can launch the vpn client, login, and remote desktop to their local workstations in the office?  I don't have any tunnels or connections setup with other offices, just a simple client connection. Also, will the rvs4000 work with Cisco VPN client (comes with higher end appliances)?

Cisco WAN :: RVS4000 Unavailable Every 30 Min

Apr 13, 2013

2 months ago, I bought a RVS 4000 for my personnal use. I recently had fiber with about 200Mb/s in download and there are no router that can handle such speed so I search online and I found the RVS4000 and the new on RV180 ... My shop near my house only had the RVS4000 so I bought it (even if I know that it had some problem and it was discountinued...). I check all the problem online and it was problem on the VPN part... so I bought it.

But since I had it, It seems like my connection was dropping every now and then... so I start to check my installation at home... I check the network error... nothing.. I change my network cable... still the problem...

So I called cisco and they send me another one... so I put it back online... and then... same problem... I ask a friend at work, he tried to understand and tell me it was maybe my personnal switch because it was old... so I change it.... but same problem...

I start to track my bug...  I found out that there was a hidden telnet available on the RVS4000 so I enable it to see all the process available...

I made a linux script to see when the router was unavalaible ... and I found out that it was every 30 min... I was able to have at the same time a "top" command on the router in a shell ...  I found that a process was reaching 100% of cpu use and the loadaverage of the router was increasing from 0 to 5 or 10 sometime... And my laptop was starting to lost packets... (this is normal because the router isn't able to process the connection)...

I try all the firmware (old and new) I try also to put the router in factory default state ... same problems...

I attached a copy of my screen with the network unavalaible..

So from left to right:
ping 192.168.1.1 (the router)
ping google.fr (from my laptop)
on the top right:
top (on the router)
bottom right:
my script which tells me that if the routeur is avalaible or not

I would like to add wifi and I would like to do so with keeping both networks separate. I have a used 1130AG access point and was wondering if I could use this single AP for both networks. If so, how would I go about doing so? Is there a better suited AP for my needs?

Cisco Routers :: RVS4000 ACL Modification Bug

May 16, 2012

I have an RVS4000 running V2.0.2.7 firmware that gives me an "Invalid Character(s) Found" error message when I try to edit an existing ACL.

I'm trying to deploy 57 of these routers and would like to be able to use a pre-built config dropped onto each router.

I initially planned on editing the exported config with a find&replace for my local LAN addresses. Since that didn't work the next reasonable solution would be to edit the ACL list (much more tedious, but still better than hand-entering every ACL on all 57 devices).

when this bug will be addressed? Alternatively, if there is an offline configuration editing tool I would be one happy camper to have it!

Cisco VPN :: RVS4000 As VPN Switch Server?

May 26, 2013

In the past a used an RVS4000 as a VPN server for my company, but since I recently moved my company to China I would like to use it for a different purpose if it's possible. What I would like to do is the following:

Use an ADSL router to create a LAN networkConnect my RVS4000 to the ADLS router and use it as a switch instead of a routerUse the RVS4000 to connect to a VPN server abroad over L2TP or PPTP . This would allow me to enjoy the best of 2 worlds:

Enjoy the full broadband speed of the LAN network created by the ADSL router for normal internet useHave a separate wired connection permanently connected to VPN giving access to company email etc...  My question is: Is this actually possible?

Can the RVS4000 be used as a switch? When used as a switch, can the RVS4000 still be used a 'VPN receiver'?  I'm possible trying to do the impossible, because I would have to have the ADSL router have to act as a DHCP server and disable DHCP on my RVS4000 in which case it is probably impossible to have the RVS4000 act as an L2TP/PPTP VPN receiver.

Cisco Routers :: Two RVS4000 Don't Connect To Each Other

Sep 4, 2011

I don't know if my vendor mislead me, but I need to do this: There is a public subnet in my office, not a 192.168.x.x, but a real Public IP.The reason is that we do VOIP and those are only servers. I installed a RVS 4000 in that location, and assigned a PUBLIC Ip to BOTH the WAN and LAN, since when I connect from outside, using either QickVPN or another identical router, I need to be assigned one of the PUBLIC Ip's on the remote LAN. That is the whole idea of the project, to locate servers remotely and make them use our set of PUBLIC IP's. Well, so far I cannot connect either with the Quick VPN client, or using the VPN Wizard. It goes and creates the tunnel, without error, but when I click test, it fails.

Cisco RVS4000 Setup As Gateway

Aug 30, 2011

I have a side client who's recently upgraded their internet service from a single T1 to a 100mb fiber line. TW Telecom brought the fiber line into their building and run it through a Cisco 3400 which hands it off to TW Telecom's Adtran 4430. If I take my laptop and assign it the appropriate IP and subnet and plug straight into the Adtran I get close to full speeds so I can rule out the ISP (I think).

It comes out of the Adtran to a Cisco RVS4000 setup as a gateway and then feeds off to a Cisco SG200-50 and Cisco 248G switches. Anything from the RVS4000 and beyond on the customer side will only receive a quarter of the speeds I get if I plug straight to the Adtran. I talked to the tech from TW Telecom and they have confirmed the Adtran is hard coded for 1GB Full Duplex speeds so I'm going to assume the RVS4000 needs to match that. I'm not 100% sure on how to make sure the RVS4000 is set to that. In the Admin GUI for the RVS I've gone under the L2 Switch Port Settings and set them to match the Adtran but it makes no difference.

I'm getting some sort of port duplex conflict and need to figure out where to make adjustments.

Cisco Routers :: RVS4000 VPN Setup?

Nov 11, 2012

I am getting ready to setup an RVS4000 so we can use the VPN functionality of it, but I am not quite sure of the correct way to integrate it into our network though. I do not need site to site, just the client portion of it for a few salesmen/off site people to use. I have never used or setup a VPN before, so I'm learning everything as I go along.

We are in the middle of switching our ISP and I am waiting to set this up until the new service is live so I can test it prior to moving the rest of the company to the new ISP.

We are switching to Comcast, and will have 5 static IP's available to use.  Currently, the firewall does all our NAT and is the forward facing device on our network.  I would like to leave the firewall in place (although I am setting up a new firewall for the new internet connection) and have th RVS 4000 sit behind it and receive VPN traffic from a WAN to LAN rule  We currently have a 192.168.100.0/24 network.

Do I need to setup another /24 network for the VPN to function behind (and still have access to the 100.X network), or is there a way to allow everyone who connects to receive a 100.X ip address from our DHCP server.  I'm not sure how to set everything up with the WAN/LAN connections on the RVS4000 to acheive this.

We are running a domain on a 2008R2 server.  The clients will be using laptops that are already part of the domain, if that will make a difference.

Cisco Routers :: RVS4000 VPN Configuration

Jun 15, 2011

I'm trying to setup a VPN tunnel between a Cisco RVS4000 on our side and a Cisco ASA5520, to connect a machine on our local network to a test server on the target side.

We have all the settings setup correctly and the tunnel is up and running, however, our local machine can't connect/ping to their server. I've tried a trace route both from the machine and from the RVS4000 itself, and they both get stuck after getting past 192.168.1.1. Is there any routing or NAT-ing that I need to do on our router? Or is there a problem somewhere else?

Cisco Routers :: RVS4000 IP Based ACL And NAT?

Aug 8, 2009

I'm having an issue with a Linksys RVS4000 which doesn't appear to be behaving as I think it should.I need to forward a port (Single Port Forwarding) through to an internal NAT host. However, I only want that host/port to be accessible from one host on the internet, for security reasons.

I have created the port forwarding entry and this works fine. I then created two rules in IP Based ACL - one to block all access to that port from the WAN interface and one to allow access from a single host.

However, it appears that when a port forwarding entry is added, it will completely bypass the ACL and allow all traffic for that port/host by default. Is this the correct behaviour?

Firmware version is v1.2.11

Cisco Routers :: RVS4000 Not Distributing IP Addresses?

Jan 21, 2013

I work for a company that recently upgraded to a Cisco RVS4000 router in place of a failing D-Link router.  I configured the RVS4000 to utilize the same address space as the D-Link previously did (192.168.0.0 Network Address, 255.255.255.0 Subnet Mask, RVS4000 in Gateway Mode with IP Address 192.168.0.1, DHCP Scope from 192.168.0.101 - 200 managed by the RVS4000) before installing it on the network.  I powered down the D-Link as well as the cable modem, then all of the workstations in the office.  Then, I installed the RVS4000, powered up the cable modem, and once it was ready, powered on the RVS4000.

When devices connect, the RVS4000 is assigning them an IP address in the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet, instead of the 192.168.0.0/24 subnet.  I have verified that the RVS4000's GUI is showing the correct settings, but connected devices are not picking up addresses from the correct address pool.  In troubleshooting, I went to each workstation, released and renewed their IP addresses, and they picked up addresses in the correct subnet.  I thought everything was solved, but the next day, the same problem resurfaced.

I left the DHCP lease time at the defaul value "0", which according to the unit's documentation should correspond to a 24-hour lease period.  I suspect this is why I had to renew the clients' IP addresses the next day (today), but I still don't get why the RVS4000 wants to give out addresses in the 192.168.1.0/24 scope.  Could this be a holdover from the factory settings?

Additional Information: I did not set up any VLANs on the network and the office only requires one subnet as there are not a lot of devices connected, nor do we need the traffic segragated.  The VPN functions of the RVS4000 work fine.  Using the QuickVPN utility, I can access the network and resources on the network remotely without issue.

Cisco Routers :: RVS4000 Looses WAN-connection

Aug 18, 2011

My new RVS4000 (2.0.2.7) connects the WAN via PPoE with dynamic IP which is held at DynDNS and normally I see the RVS4000 via a router-to-router-VPN. That works fine so far, but every "some" days the router looses WAN connection (and with ist VPN). When this happens, last DynDNS-update is hours ago, so it didn`t reconnect. Looking on the routers site, the LAN is fully functional for clients that have got their DHCP-Information. New clients don`t get DHCP-Info (IP-address, DNS), both do not have internet access. The router`s WAN-summary shows, that it thinks to be "CONNECTED" but with empty WAN-IP and DNS entries. Klicking "DISCONNECT" and then "CONNECT" again solves the problem so far. The loss of connection is not the periodic break from the IPC, which is correctly identified and reconnected as configured. I wanted to trace the problem with the log, but there is also a bug. It stops logging at some time completely - neither email-log nor local log, so I never happend to be lucky to hit the point of loss of connection. Also the local log provides a first and next pages, but the next pages are always empty - not really useful.

Cisco Routers :: RVS4000 - VPN DynDNS Behind Firewall NAT

Aug 15, 2012

The local router is behind a fiber firewall/router; the rvs4000's ext ip is thus 192.168.1.2, not visible from the net.  The firewall/router is a dyn ip, with a dyn dns name mapping to it.  The remote (some NetGear thing) is also dyn dns, but it is not behind a firewall.

I want to cook a vpn from the local lan subnet to the remote lan subnet.

It worked fine when both ends were NetGear.

I think it would be ok if somehow I could thell the rvs4000 that the local Security Gateway Type be just FQDN; it can't be IP+FQDN because the remote end doesn't know anything about that kind of thing; it can do IP or FQDN or a couple other confusing things.
