Cisco WAN :: C1700 Router - Unknown Protocol Drops On Interfaces
Mar 2, 2011
I have a Cisco router C1700 and it is presenting unknow errors on Serial 0/0 and fa0/0 interfaces. Why this counter is increasing?? Im not very sure if is by CDP neighbors or Vlans that are not configured on a switch attached.I undertand that the unknown protocol drops field displayed in the above example refers to the total number of packets dropped due to unknown or unsupported types of protocol. How to solve this unknown DROPS? [code]

I have a 1801 router connected to a 3550 switch with a regular 802.1q trunk, and I am curious as to what may be causing the unknown protocol drops on the connected router interface.
The switch is without any configuration at all except the following for the trunk configuration on the interface connecting to the router.
Switch:
-interface FastEthernet0/1
-switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
-switchport mode trunk
Router:
-Interface FastEthernet8
-switchport mode trunk
There is nothing connected to the switch other than the router so the dropped traffic must be originating from the switch itself. The unknown protocol drop counter on the router increments by one every 30 seconds, and I tried using a packet sniffer but nothing noticeble showed up.
I read elsewhere on these forums that it might be udld, but that is not enabled by default, and just to be sure I tried disabling it on the interface and as expected it said it was not enabled, so I am ruling that one out.I also read that it could be because the router is recieving traffic from other protocols than IP, but I do not see how it applies in this case.
what does a 3550 send every 30 seconds that my 1801 does not understand?Could it have something to do with STP?

How to hit the 32 interface nbar limit on an ASR? Our ASR1002 ESP5 is now grumbling: %NBAR-4-STILE_MAX_PD_INTF: NBAR protocol-discovery is enabled on maximum number of interfaces (32) supported by this platform..Is this expected to increase in future software revisions? (or is it a h/w limitation?)Is it the same limit regardless of ESP or will I get more (how many more?) if it is an e.g. ESP20?

We are receiving a large amount of output drops on 4 interfaces that connect to microwave wireless. This is playing up with our Management system. Saw a bug report but that was for 3750, not the IOS version but was a similar issue. [code] The output errors tend to happen at the same time. All ports are trunks however there are other trunks on the switch that are not having these issues. [code]

Any know how to close these open ports on my Cisco 7606 router? Any know what these TCP ports are used for?
:
49 - Not sure what this one is other than what IANA reports about TCP port 49

4509

:
I'm sure I could add an ACL to block communications to my router based on this ports but would rather figure out how to close 'em so this already overloaded router doesn't have additional processing.

I keep getting some additional IP addresses logging onto my home network that have an address outside what should be allowed by the router. The server is running at 192.168.2.1 and is set to only allow clients from 192.168.2.2 - 192.168.2.10 so a total of 9 clients should be allowed on.The problem is that something keeps logging in with an address of 192.168.169.2 or 3 etc. Sometimes more than one device at a time.I have assumed that it is some automated or virtual client as I'm pretty certain my network has not been breached. I have a 9 character password with a relatively random alphanumeric combination, although I haven't tried changing the password (I live in a share house with with a bunch of devices using wireless, so I haven't yet bothered). What I don't understand is how it has connected with the xx.xx.169.xx range at all. I have a Belkin 'Share' Wireless N Modem Router and at some stage there was a 'guest' network but that has since been disabled and I still am seeing the extra address. I have attached a screen shot of the DHCP client list on the router. The following is a list of devices that may be on the network at times, I'm thinking one of these may be responsible for the problem:
Windows Vista Desktop - Only LAN device
PS3
Macbook
Epson wireless printer
Android HTC Desire Mobile Phone
Laptops running various Windows versions (XP, Vista and 7)
A few thoughts I had:
- the android phone is capable of running a wireless hotspot, may have to look into it to see if if has been operating as an access point into the Belkin router, but assumed this wouldn't bring up clients connected to the phone on the home router.
- The desktop has PS3 Media server installed to stream video to the PS3 over the network (not that I have ever managed to get it to work), however this is not ever open on the desktop.

I recently purchased a Linksys EA4500 Dual-Band N900 Router with Gigabit and USB. Everything set up great with no problems and after a day or 2 I managed to get all home devices connected (2 laptops, 2 printers, an iphone, 1 tv, 1 blu-ray, an old desktop, and a tablet). Everything was connected right and working and I installed the Linksys app on my iPhone which let me see what devices were connected and all that. Well, last night, an unknown device showed up as a connected device. It's labeled as: android_(insert string of characters) and has a MAC address. I've tried and tried to identify what this device is and I can't. Everything else on our network is still showing up independently of that device. I'm worried that someone using our connection and possibly putting our device security at risk. What can I do to A) try to identify what the device is and B) if it is an intruder, block it's access.

I have the WRT400N router with the latest firmware. Recently I have noticed a device in my DHCP that I do not recognize. It is not device I own (believe me, I have racked my brain and confirmed) as it shows as an Acer pc. I cannot ping the IP address however. I have rebooted my router several times thinking maybe it's a former connected device but saved in memory but it keeps coming back. I am thinking possibly it is someone hi-jacking my Internet, but not sure. I am using WEP security but it shows a LAN connection which is strange for a wireless device. The only hard wired pc is my HP.

I'm in the process of finding a dual WAN router with VPN support, that allow me to redirect some traffic to one specific WAN port and do load balancing of that specific traffic in case of that WAN failing (this last requirement is preferably but isn't fully needed).
Does the RV042/G could work with that? In that case, does it allow protocol redirect only? What about ip/ports redirecting? Or some kind of packet filtering to redirect to specific WAN ports?

I have a PPTP VPN server (WIndows 2008 R2) sitting behind an RVS4000, I have port forwarding for 1732 on and the client's (Windows 7) can reach the VPN server but cannot complete the connection due to an 806 error, which is GRE traffic related. I have PPTP passthrough on and have also created a ACL entry for PPTP traffic. I've seen many posts on this topic over several years with no solutions, and I do have the latest firmware (Version:V1.3.3.5). This is also definetely router related as I have absolutley no problem connecting when I point directly to the VPN server by internal IP address.

I'm trying to set up an 1801 router with two WAN interfaces, fastethernet0 and fastethernet1. On the LAN side, I have two subnets. One subnet's internet traffic should be routed over fastethernet0, the other over fastethernet1.I've setup some route maps to accomplish this. I can surf the internet using subnet 192.168.2.0/24 fine, all traffic goes out of fastethernet0. However, and this is where the problem is, if I try to reach the internet using subnet 192.168.3.0/24, all packets go out interface fastethernet0 with the source address of fastethernet1!When I'm surfing the internet, from subnet 192.168.3.0/24, packets should be going out fastethernet1, now they're going out fastethernet0.

configuring my Cisco 2951 router. There are three routed interfaces that I need to configure: one for the internal LAN, the second for another private subnet that connects to a Data Centre and the third for the WAN connection. I have configured the Ge0/0 interface as the LAN interface with the internal network 10.17.0.0/24. I have also configured my WAN interface Ge0/1 for internet connectivity. Now, I need to configure the third interface Ge0/2 that will connect to the Data Centre. This will be a private point to point switched ethernet link. The Data Centre will host a secondary domain controlller. So, I want it to be on the same network as the internal LAN, i.e., 10.17.0.0/24. I want to be able to see all other devices that will be located at the Data Centre just like I would see all devices connected to the internal LAN.The problem I am facing is that Cisco 2951 does not allow me to configure two routed interfaces to be on the same subnet. Is there any way to work around this problem and configure both the internal LAN and the Data Centre private network to be on the same subnet.
