Cisco :: WCS 5500 Should Clients Associate With APs With Highest Signal Strength
Aug 10, 2011
I have one room within which clients have problems associating. When using AirMagnet however one of the AP s appears to have the strongest S/n Ratio and overall signal strenght.I would have thought that would be the obvious AP for clients to associate with. However that is not the case and the users are trying to associate with various APs with lesser signal strengths. None of them have 100 % utilisation and if they all tryed to associate with the AP with the strongest signal that would alleviate the existing association problems. We are using AIR-CAP3502E-E-K9 with WCS 5500.
I am trying to setup two Cisco 1310 bridges (AIR-BR1310G-A-K9-R) for connectivity between two buildings. No external antennas have been setup yet and I am just setting the basic configuration. One is running c1310-k9w7-mx.123-8.JEA3, the other c1310-k9w7-mx.123-7.JA1,setup as a root-bridge, the other as a non-root bridge. However, even after disabling authentication and encryption, both units are still not talking to each other.Maybe a second set of eyes can see an issue?
I have created new ssid and i want to associate only one IP address with this SSID, so that only this user will be allowed to connect to AP. I have controller 5500 series.
- 2 x WLC 5508 with about 80 - 120 access points (Aironet 3500) each - 7 x WLAN's with different security settings - 2 x ACS 5.3
On one WLAN we have the problem, that the students with their own laptops have to enter their AD username about 4-5 time, until they get a successfull 802.1x authentication. The WLAN has the following configuration:
- Hidden SSID - Only 802.11b/g - Interface assigned via AP Groups - WPA2 / AES with 802.1x or CCKM (here I could only allow 802.1x, the clients do not need fast secure roaming) - Authentication via ACS 5.3 and PEAP - for more details see screenshots below
Most of the time I can't see any 802.1x authentication attemps on the ACS View, but when there are entries, they are successfull. So in my opinion I think there has to be a problem on WLC side, but I don't know where to search further. We already deactivated the client load balancing in the WLAN, because at the beginning the customer wanted to activate that - but it was clear that there are a lot of clients which had to authenticate multiple times.I know there were some bugs in the 7.0 train, so I upgraded finaly to 7.0.235.0 to overcome this bug here: CSCty07036.To fix the other bug (CSCtt70290) I just disabled all the session timeouts on the different WLAN's.
I work on an HP desktop that used to be able to connect to the wireless network. We moved offices and and I am unable to connect to the new wireless network. The network used to appear but had no signal strength. Now the network does not even appear.
Is there a way to view my exact signal strength(say in % I guess) with my laptop running windows 7?I had software for the wireless card in my tower pc which gave a signal strength of 70%. I'm curious if my laptop is getting a similar strength since they are close but a few feet apart. Or where in my house gets the best signal other than just showing low-excellent.
I have purchased two WAP200 units to act as access point and repeater. AP and repeater functionality works fine.
The issue I am having is extremely poor signal from both units. Even when very close to the WAP200, I get poor signal quality. The range before loosing connection is only a few feet.
I'm using the antennas that came with the box and have tried multiple placements both in my house and in other locations. I have also tried changing several of the configurations without any effect on the signal strength. Older D-link and Linksys routers provide good reception to most of my house from the same location.
I have two AIR-AP350 SERIES AP's. I am receiveing wifi from my friends house a mile away across a valley with clear line of sight. I think there is a problem with one of these units because when doing a link test one unit shows 14% signal strength on either antenna from the remote router and the second unit shows 6% on the left hand antenna and 1% on the right.
We just recently invested in 5 RV180Ws to serve as replacements for the aging routers in 5 of our shops. Additionally, we bought them because they seem to offer robust WiFi options for customers/guests, such as multiple SSIDs and restricting 'public' traffic to it's own VLAN.
Straight out of the box we updated them to the new firmware, 1.0.2.6, set up 2 SSIDs (one hidden for employee use, and one broadcast for customer use), and plugged them in.
Everything seemed to be going great until we walked to the other side of the shop and watched the signal drop off almost completely. These are fairly small premises and the router can't be more than 8 metres from where the customers are, and yet the signal is so weak that it's almost unusable.
For reference, we have the WiFi running in B/G/N mixed mode to maximise compatibility. with the channel and width set to their defaults (Auto and 20MHz, I believe).
Moving the routers is only semi-viable; these are meant to serve as replacements for existing IT equipment, and the cabling situation means they can only really go in the office space near the rear of the shops. Also, it simply shouldn't be necessary; WiFi should extend well past 8 metres without issue.
In our project we are building a smartphone application dat determines the locations of persons in a building, using Wifi access points.Using 3 accespoint we are calculating the overlap of 3 circles.Today we measured the signal strength and found out that it changes around alot.So we dont really know if our measurements are right.
We would like to know what the RSSI strengths are of the following access point per meter.Cisco Aironet 1140 2.4 ghz
I have three desktops and one lap. I have TWC RCA modem and cisco linksys router and two usb adapters for wireless connection. situation is this: the modem and router are at one end of the house and one of the pc's is located at the other end. that one gets low signal strength only one or two bars and the internet works slowly to a point it feels like i'm on dial up. I've had people tell me to upgrade the router from wrt45g to n which I did to an e1000, but I still have the same issue. also was told to move the modem and router to the center of the house. but twc says that would not correct the issue.
Something about dividing the mpbs and the farther the pc the lower the signal. so, guess my question would be 1. does that sound correct to you. would it be better to move the modem and router? would it be better to have the one in question wired in? I did try an extender by netgear, which gave more bars/signal strength but but then would not connect to the internet. but I did that before I got newer linksys router. not sure if maybe I should try the extender again, but then the geek squad, when they came an set up the new router, said that it would probably do the same thing.
I have computers scattered across our home, and in many areas it is not feasible to run ethernet cable. At one location (less than 30 feet away) but through multiple walls, I can barely connect to any POS (I have two). I added a stand alone antenna extension with long antennas on both the router and the WiFi card on the PC, however, this made zero improvement. What should I be looking to purchase to increase the signal strength? I've already tried different routers.
I have my DIR-655 router set up on the first floor because my son's tricked out gaming rig is in the basement while our office is on the 2nd floor. On the router, I tweaked settings to give him priority speed when he is gaming. Although he complains about his speeds and connectivity. In our 2nd floor office -- which is one floor and 30 ft through a wall away -- my signal strength varies from 45% to 70%. There are times when neighbor's networks show greater strength than mine does. I live in a house so the physical distance is much greater plus there are two exterior walls, no matter where their router is placed. The adapter in the office computer is a D-Link DWA-556.
My question has to do with the low signal strength of my dir-655. I have it set up in the second bedroom of my apartment. When I am sitting in my living room (about 30 feet away) it's really hard to pull in a signal of more than one bar on my phone, or two bars on my wife's kindle fire and will often drop the signal all together. But, if I search for networks, tons of other routers come up with excellent signal strength from our neighbors. Is there something I need to know about expanding the signal strength?
Is there a way to weaken the wrt54g signal strength? I have a client that has one of these setup and they say it's too strong and people can get it from too far away. Instead of locking it down so only certain people can get onto it like I asked they want to limit the strength of the signal so it only reaches two rooms. Is this possible?
I find myself having to venture out into the realm of wireless (I'm more of a UC/DC engineer...) and i've got a problem i'm trying to track down. Installed two WLC 5508s, WCS, 3502i APs (123 of them...) in a 4-floor high school. What i'm finding is lousy throughput from a lab of PCs with little USB b/g/n adapters. I took my Macbook in and ran iStumbler to get an idea of the SNR but honestly, i'm not sure what i'm looking for.
For the particular room/SSID/band that i was looking at, i found that in the 2.4 range, i was getting 53% signal strength and about 16% noise. Is that a good level? In WCS, i can see close to a dozen APs in relation to the AP in question, so i'm wondering if the SNR is too high..
Purchase the unit from Amazon and installed it in December. Device worked perfectly with excellent coverage for approx 14 days then I got a call from the location stating that they where not seeing the SSID. Power cycled the unit and still nothing. The only way I could get a signal is if I held the wireless device within one foot of the WAP4410N and even then I would only get 1 bar of signal strength.
My router has wireless capability and the signal inside my home is pretty strong so I have no compaints there. The problem comes in when I use my computer which is located in a shed outside. I get a signal maybe 35% of the time, and even then it's weak. I want to use an access point to allow the computer in the shed to aquire internet access. Do I need to hardwire the access point or can I do it wirelessly? Would a repeater be more effective and which config would be best in that case?
Am running WIN 7 64 BIT and have today installed a BT Home Hub 3. WiFi signal is very poor. (1 1/2 bars only) Have Belkin Wireless G Card in computer and previously used it with Netgear DG834G router with very good signal strength.Do I now need to disable the Belkin card in order for the BT Hub to produce a decent signal?

I called Customer Care and confirmed that MR3220 supports ZTE AC2738 Model even though it is not there in Compatible list. But when i actually configured- It is showing as Modem Identified but signal strenth is showing Zero.
I have connected my DIR-825 to my cable modem through the network ports and completed the configuration. Everything works fine, I am able to connect through wireless to the DIR-825 and access the internet. I had to do this as my cable modem is also wireless and does not allow another router to be connected through the internet connection, but I want to get a better signal stength than the cable modem. When I am not wireless connected, I can see the two bands at full strength in the view available wireless networks screen. As soon as I connect to either the 2.4 channel or the 5 channel, the signal strenth of the channel I'm connected to drops to horrible, while the non-connected one still shows at full strength.i tried disabling one of the channels, but as soon as I connect to the other, that channels signal strength still drops to horrible.
i am having low signal strength on my laptop . only 2 bars are shown on strength meter . wifi router is just 3 meters away . my roommate has hp elite book and his signal strength is always full.
I am using a desktop PC with a wireless USB stick attached in order to connect to the internet via a wireless router, however, although it states that I am connected with excellent signal strength, it continues to show a warning sign over the wireless connection signal bars ON THE DESKTOP TRAY ONLY. I can't surf the web on my desktop or on my IPAD through the wireless connection in which both devices detect. I have a Sitecom wireless router.

The signal strength usually shows low or very low. I`ve been changing the channels through 1,6,11, but it doesn`t change the signal strength. My modem is a Netgear CGD24N v2. The computer operates ok but i`d like the signal strength to show better than low.
