Cisco Wireless :: 5508 - How To Determine Geographic Location Of Rogue Access Point
Oct 31, 2012
I have the wireless controller 5508 and many AP1261 registered on site. It detects a lot of rogue access points around. I would like to find out geographic location of these rogue access points. Is it possible?

Do you know an easy way to determine the physical location of the device were an IP address is attached? IP Geo location doesn't work well.Is something like this possible? I know it could be if you are the network administrator and know the location of your equipment and stuff.

I am trying to determine the best option for extending my home network. I am currently running an E2000 as my router and am considering the purchase of a Valet Plus to use as only an Access Point. Alternatively I have a used E1000 in good condition. Which would be best for use as an Access Point only?

We got some serious issues to get APs running on a WLC 5508 (7.0.116.0). The APs were added and configured in the WCS, but no SSID can be found by clients (802.11b/g Network Status is enabled).
The radio led is blinking green on the APs which indicate that the "access point location command" has been invoked. What's the meaning of that?

I have a 5508 controller with 70 AP's ( a mix of 1131 and 1142). On the Monitor tab I can see under the Rogue Summary numerous "Rogue AP's" as well as the clients associated to these AP's. There are no Rogue AP's on my wired network according to the report. My question is this: What actions should I take regarding these "Roague AP's"? Many of them appear to be just other AP's in the residential area near by. I know I can take action to classify them as Friendly or Malicious as well as Internal or External, but what benefit is there to doing this? Will taking these actions keep my AP's from scanning off channel for Rogues? I read that if a "Rogue AP" is not on the wired network that is really is not considered a threat. Any Cisco best practices regarding how to handle detected Rogue AP's ?

We have recently deployed a wlc5508 & some 40+ 3502i APs at the location. In the wlc I notice quite a few "rogue AP" listed with ssid's.
Is there a way within the wcs or wlc to determine better if any of these rogue AP are on my Lan?If I can locate the mac address of the ethernet port on the rogue AP I can track the port down on the appropriate switch & shut it down.

Subject: FlexConnect compatibility with Access Point? We have today one Cisco 5508 and those access point on remote sites
o CISCO AIR-LAP-1131AG-E-K9
o CISCO AIR-LAP-1231G-E-K9
o CISCO AIR-LAP-1142N-E-K9
We plan to use redundancy on the controller and implement Flexconnect on the remote site. What we need to know is if I can implement Flexconnect on all actual access point - I think it is possible on 1142N + 1131G but do not know on 1231AG - is it correct or I'm wrong ? We plan to install the latest SW version for 5508 controller.

(5508 WLC, 1142N APs).I understand if I enable the AP mode to Rogue Detector from the details page of the AP, the AP stops accepting requests and is now looking for rogue items on the wired network. Is this the same when I enable Rogue Location Discovery Protocol? Will I lose the wireless functionality of all of my APs on the controller?
Next question, when I look at the Rogue Summary on the Monitoring page I see three Adhoc Rogue devices. When I select the Detail link only one shows. I remember the other two were HP mutifuction devices with WIFI enabled but I cannot retrieve that information anymore.

We have 2 5508 WLC's on site (5508-1 & 5508-2) and at the completion of this project we will have around 150 access points. We are also using WCS. 5508-1 is set as the primary/master controller. 5508-2 is the secondary controller, serves as backup if/when 5508-1 fails. All LAPs connect to 5508-1 by default, so 5508-2 is basically sitting there doing nothing. Is this the best way to take advantage of the resources that are available? Would wireless clients see improved performance if the access points were split between the two controllers? If we do split LAPs between the controllers should I make sure that all of the LAPs on a particular floor are connected to the same controller or does that matter?

I am testing rogue on wire using 5508 WLC and , I have a dedicated AP configured as rogue detector and configured the switch port where the Rogue detector is connected as trunk. I have plugged in an autonomous AP with open authentication to the same switch so that it can act as a rogue. On the WLC, I can see that Autonomous AP as rogue on Wire. But along with that I am seeing another AP as rogue on wire, even though i have plugged in only one Autonomous AP to the switch.

I'm looking for some input on RRM. I personally have NOT used it in a LONG TIME, since probably the 4.0 days and then very shortly due to massive issues it was causing and admittedly, in part due to my ignorance at the time. So, every since that point, I have always set all my channels and power manually but now feel I am getting to some points where RRM may be required / beneficial. So, I've invested some time and have begun researching and trying to get the ends and outs on it but I'm forseeing a potential issue in myworld anyways and am hoping for some clarification. Lets take the below example:
-WLC5508a and b - (2 100ap license controllers) - these hold the majority of the AP's for the main hospital.Lets say, 140AP's.
-WLC5508c and d - (1 100ap and 1 50ap licensed controllers) - These tend to hold our smaller sites and and buildings, not all connected and some a few miles from each other
-WLC4402a and b - (failover ready)
So, with RRM, I can set setting it up on the 5508A/B with out issue as this is one big large building. However, what about C and D? I suppose I can make them a separate RF Group, but how would RRM respond when it has16 AP's in Building X and then 3 AP's in Building Y 30 AP's in Building Z and sporadic buildings with 1's and 2's? Everything I've read so far, leads me to believe if these devices are separated it probably won't be an issue, however, I just don't want something causing a change in Building Z and Building X be affected because RRM decided it would try to fix it. My point is, I can't afford to have a separate RF Group (meaning separate controllers) for every location.

How do I connect and configure my WAP54G wireless access point to my new Cable Modem? I have it connected to the modem but I cannot access it to configure it. It appears to be working but before I got the cable modem I had it connected to a router and it was set-up with a static IP address. With my new ISP, I no longer have a static IP address so I am trying to configure the WAP54G to use DHCP. Trying to access it thru the internet at 192.168.1.245 does not work.

I just bought an LG Bluray DVD player (BD390) which is unable to find the access point in my home network. My router is a WRT54G, ver. 2.2, running firmware: Ver.4.21.1. My home network uses high speed cable with two computers on the wireless network, all working with no problems. The router is on the second floor but the two computers and the new BD390 are on the first floor - about 35 feet away. I have the wirelss security set to none and use only the specific computer MAC addresses to allow connection to this network.
I found directions in the forum for a setup using the LG BD390 but with a different Linksys router. I changed the security to WPA (AES); the Beacon interval from 100 to 75; the Fragmentation Threshold from 2346 to 2304; and the RTS Threshold from 2347 to 2307. The DVD wireless connection still failed to find my network. There is a "Push button" connection feature on the BD390 setup which I tried, but the only "button" on the router I could find was in the basic wireless setting, a green icon for the wireless SSID setup. No connection was made there either.
The recommendation connection from the LG manual is for a network cable, but that would be over 50 feet and a real pain to connect, so I would prefer WiFi.
