Determine Physical Location Of IP Address?
Jul 20, 2011
Do you know an easy way to determine the physical location of the device were an IP address is attached? IP Geo location doesn't work well.Is something like this possible? I know it could be if you are the network administrator and know the location of your equipment and stuff.

There is a unicast flood on 3750 killing slow modem links. How to determine source MAC address of flooder? Is there a rate limit feature for it?
I know how to block it completely on port-level, but it breaks normal network operation. (when port goes down for some reason, it's learned MACs got flushed and since other hosts know MACs, they keep flooding untill their arp caches expire).

I have Internet connection in Ethernet Medium connected to a L2 Switch (Cisco 2960). I have 2 Routers (Cisco 2900). I have a webserver to be accessed from Internet. The physical IP address of the server is Private range.
I have configured Stateful NAT as below
157.220.100.61 is Static NAT to 10.1.1.3 using redundancy
Though HSRP is working good, when RTR-1 is down, I am not able to reach Webserver (10.1.1.3) using RTR-2
We found in the that ISP Switch, that even when RTR-1 is down, the MAC address for 157.220.100.61 is still present one pointing to RTR-1 and other pointing to RTR-2. There are 2 MAC address entries for 157.220.100.61

We have recently upgraded oor LAN and we are using couple of Nexus5548UP switches in the core with 2960 stacks as access switches. Each access switches stack is connnected to both core switches with link being port-chanels and VPCs. All is working fine, but our SolarWinds management platform (NPM) is being flooded with "Physical Address changed" events. Here is an example of messages:
NSW_Core_2 - Ethernet1/7 Physical Address changed from 000000003811 to 73616D653811
NSW_Core_2 - Ethernet1/7 Physical Address changed from 200B82B43811 to 000000003811
For each interface I have messages like these repeating.I am not sure what those messages means or if there is actually anything wrong. Performance of the network is good, there are no errors on any interfaces and I do not see anything related in the switch loggs.

My customer wants each ACE4710 (of a highly available cluster) to have its own, dedicated port for management purposes.
According to documentation, IP addressing can be applied to VLAN interfaces, so in order to satisfy the requirement, I should make one port belong to an "access VLAN X", and then apply IP addressing to the corresponding "interface VLAN X". This should satisfy my customer´s requirement in an indirect way.
But... ¿ Can´t I just configure IP address on one of the 4 ethernet ports in order to save the work of building the aforementioned VLAN? I am asking this since I do not have access to a real box in order to verify.

When ever I create a network object in ASDM 6.0(3) the UI also wants to send the command 'asdm location (network object IP address)' to the device. What is the purpose of 'asdm locaction ....'? Is it telling the ASA-5540 that the IP address is allowed to connect to the device using ASDM?If that is the case why does 'asdm location xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx'get denerated for every network object I create?

I'm the sole IT worker at this company and I specialize in everything but big, corporate networking so here's a dumb question. How do I determine the IP address of one of our two switches? I need a list of MAC addresses of connected devices so I can relabel all the cables that were mislabeled (and this is a managed switch). For the other switch, which was put in by someone who knew what they were doing, you just type ss3900 into a browser and tada, 3com Superstack 3900 login so apparently someone did some fancy DNS stuff or whatever.
For this HP Procurve, the idiot before me who got fired for completely screwing up everything didn't leave any documentation or labeling and didn't use the same IP address as the Cisco switch that was pulled out. Obviously the switch is invisible to my PC from an IP standpoint

I have a site with a 1700 router connected to a 2960 switch. For some of the computers on site I want to determine how much traffic is local to the LAN and how much is going across the WAN.
One strategy I've come up with is to reset the interface counters on the switch ports to the machines in question and after some time compare the total bytes in and out of the interface with netflow data from the router. My only concern is that netflow is not completely accurate about the amount of data that has passed through an interface.
Is there a better or more accurate way to accomplish my goal?

I was attempting to troubleshoot a logon problem with some machines, when it was finally revealed that there was a managed switch between the host and the target preventing this.
How would I detect this in the future? (A tracert showed nothing between host and target.) Would Wireshark show me this info, with reduced TTLs?
getting a picture of all devices between a host and a target?

Should the DIR-655 list all devices that are accessing either my WAN or another device on the LAN, assuming there are no other switches on the network, and all traffic is going through the DIR-655?
I was trying to determine the IP, and MAC address of an AT&T Microcell connected to my network. I have no physical access to Microcell. I have been able to find the IP address, in the logs of the DIR-655, but nowhere else. Shouldn't it be listed under SETUP -> NETWORK SETTINGS -> NUMBER OF DYNAMIC DHCP CLIENTS?

I am new to Cisco Nexus and recently my company auditor flagged out that IPv6 is enabled on our Cisco Nexus 7000 device when we are not IPv6 ready.
The auditors have flagged this out due to the following default CoPP configuration:

ipv6 access-list copp-system-acl-icmp6
ipv6 access-list copp-system-acl-icmp6-msgs
ipv6 access-list copp-system-acl-ntp6
ipv6 access-list copp-system-acl-ospf6
ipv6 access-list copp-system-acl-pim6
ipv6 access-list copp-system-acl-radius6
ipv6 access-list copp-system-acl-ssh6
ipv6 access-list copp-system-acl-tacacs6
ipv6 access-list copp-system-acl-telnet6
ipv6 access-list copp-system-acl-tftp6
Does the default CoPP enable IPv6?

The support and registration pages for the E4200 wireless router ask whether I have a V1 or V2 router. There is no place on the actual router that identifies it as V1 or V2, and the Cisco Connect application doesn't display this infomation either. What I do know is the following:
Model name: Linksys E4200
Model number: E4200
Serial number: 01C10C18104423
Firmware version: 1.0.03 build 14
Software version: 1.4.12005.2
How do I determine if this is a V1 or V2 router? The software updates are version specific.
