Cisco Wireless :: 6509 - Apply MAC Filters On Select LAPs

Apr 29, 2012

We have a mix of 1231 and 1242 access points in an LWAPP environment. They are connected to WiSM controllers in our 6509's and are managed by a central WLC. Everything is running version 7.0.230. My question is can I apply MAC address filtering on a select group of AP's to restrict access to a specific SSID broadcast on these AP's without affecting other AP's also connected to the same WiSM?

Cisco Wireless :: 1240AG / MAC Filters With Standalone APs?

Feb 24, 2013

I'm looking at creating WLANs using standalone APs for the first time. I know this can all be done with trivially a controller, but this project can't stretch to that...Can I use MAC filtering on standalone APs to restrict which clients associate?I think these will be 1240AG devices but I assume the answer is the same for all models? Can I mix MAC filtering with WEP/WPA? And use MAC filtering without encryption?

Cisco Wireless :: WLC 5508 / How To Get It To Certain LAPs To Only Broadcast Specific SSIDs

Aug 26, 2012

We have a 5508 controller with about 40 LAPs, running AIR-CT5500-K9-7-2-103-0-FUS software. The need has arose to have LAPs in various locations that only broadcast specific SSIDs.

I've got seperate dyanmic interfaces already created. We have 3 "Normal" SSIDs that we broadcast to the LAPs already associated with the 5508.2 more SSIDs were created (2 different purposes).

I just can't figure out how to get it to certain LAPs to only broadcast the specific SSIDs, while the rest broadcast the normal 3, but not those 2 new ones.

Cisco :: Getting Disconnected Randomly - 5508 Controller / 3300 Series LAPs

Jan 7, 2013

I am at one of our remote offices and I am noticing my laptop, despite excellent signal strength is periodically losing IP connectivity on the wireless network.  When it drops, all of my IP connectivity stops (pings fail, RDP sessions "await reconnection", etc...).  The lower right corner still shows I'm connected to the hidden WPA2 Enterprise SSID.  The only way to reconnect is to select disconnect on it, then click connect again.  Immediately everything IP based starts working.

There is a 5508 controller in the headquarters.  The site I am at has a 30mbps fiber point to point WAN to the headquarters.  This site has 2 x 3300 series LAPs which are very good coverage.  H-REAP mode is on so traffic terminates at the local office because it is more efficient than traversing the LAN twice for things like local file and print sharing, dhcp, proper active directory sites and services mapping, etc.

Cisco Switches :: SLM2008 - Filters Out DHCP Discover

Sep 16, 2012

I'm new on this site and having SLM2008 switches. I've been trying to solve the problem for quite a while, but so far I was unable to solve it. So here it is:

I'm trying to send IP TV from ADSL box (aka Free box) located in a small annexe of the house where the telephone line enters. Whole house is wired with 1Gb CAT6 cable. I'm using this wiring to get internet connectivity in different parts of the house and this works great. Now the idea was to create a separate VLAN on my 3 SLM2008 switches to get IP TV stream from ADSL box to the media box (also provided by ISP, aka Freebox HD). Different V LAN configs did not work for me: Free box HD would stuck on boot claiming it doesn't "see" the network. So then I've decided to go from simple things to more complex and removed the V LAN (came back to default config) and connected ADSL box with Free box HD with just one SLM2008 in between. Surprisingly it did not work! Same error on Free box HD! So I plugged the hub and started my Wire Shark to see what is going on.

First tried without the switch (just with a hub in the middle) and I saw successful connection:
1) Freebox HD send DHCP Discover
2) ADSL box responds with DHCP Offer
3) HD sends DHCP Request
4) ADSL issues a DHCP lease

Free box HD is ready to show any channel from ISP.

Secondly I plugged SLM2008 back and looked at traffic right after ADSL box: No DHCP packets seen at all! Then I moved hub next to Free Box HD and I saw it keep sending DHCP Discover every 30 seconds or so.... And it was not getting reply back.

So my conclusion is that SLM2008 for yet unknown reason would not let DHCP discover pass.... I've tried un managed Net Gear switch and *boom* Free box HD booted without a problem. I looked through SLM2008 settings and I have not found something relevant.

How to make my switch pass DHCP discover? If yes my next question would be how to configure V LAN on 3 switches to make it deliver IP TV to my TV set.

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5510 Filters URLs In HTTPS?

Nov 22, 2011

My company uses a pair of 5510 ASAs as the gateway to Internet. I once configured policy-map to filter certain webpages (facebook, twitter, ...etc) and they work fine. However nowdays those websites all support HTTPS. In the https the URL seems encrypted so can't do regex match... Is there anyway that I can still block those webpages?

Another two ways I can think of are

1. Block IPs (don't really want do this unless absolutely necessary)

2. Block DNS for the URL (however they can work around by setting static DNS entries)

Cisco VPN :: ASA 5505 / Anyconnect - Adding Filters Based On Login?

Sep 30, 2012

I have two sets of local users who access internal networks vai the Anyconnect application on a Cisco ASA 5505.One user needs to access 1 ip address while about 7 users access abotu 4 addresses.

I have a group called xyz1 which currently has the one user in the connection profile.  I guess to reaffirm my thought, If I create another connection entry called xyz2, can I assign the other 7 or 8 users to it?

If I can do this, how can I ensure that each connection entry only has access to specific IP addresses on the internal network?

Cisco Wireless :: WLC5508 How Does A Typical Client Endpoint Select 802.11n Over 802.11a

May 13, 2012

In an enviroment with WCS and a WLC5508 with 40 AP's (WAPs are either 1262's and 1252's), I have noticed that the bulk of users are infact operating on 802.11g although most operating notebooks are running 802.11n capable NICs (including my own laptops NIC - but yet when I connect I connect at 54Mbps.). Only a small portion of registered clients are using 802.11n. All my WAPs have both radios enabled? My question is how does a client notebook select a "prefered" band of 802.11n. I know in some cases the wireless NICs themselves have an option to select the "Prefered Band", but there are many notebooks out there that dont have this option. What would make a client connect at 802.11n over 802.11g? Who makes that call ?

Linksys Wireless Router :: Can't Select 802.11n Anymore On Wrt54g2

Jan 4, 2012

A couple of days ago I noticed my download speed (from my own webserver) has slowed down. I checked my wireless connection and saw that the radiotype was now 802.11g instead of 802.11n, what is always has been. I looked at the Wireless configuration in the router's webbased config panel, but the only things listed there are "Disabled", "Mixed", "Wireless-G Only" and "Wireless-B Only". A scratched my head a bit, wondering wether or not I really bought an N router or just a G router. But IIRC I really bought an N router. It said so on the bill. Also, when I check the user manual, page 14 says I should be able to select "Wireless-N Only".

Cisco Wireless :: Bonjour Gateway Deployment Need Vlan Select 6509E

Apr 9, 2013

Q: If i m going to do a Bonjour Gateway deployment, do i still need the vlan select feature on the wism's or is enabling multicast enough?

Details of the Q:
I m working with WISM s and WISM2;s, 1130 and 3602 ap;s. Cores are 6509-E's.

i m going to implement a Bonjour gateway (which is an Aerohive ap, no wifi enabled, its just a Bonjour gateway)
This ap is connected with a trunk port (to a 6509-E) and has the wifi client vlans on the trunk as allowed vlans. It also has an allowed vlan for AppleTV;s which will be wired devices.
The Aerohive gateway gets an ip address in every wifi subnet, so far so good.

I was thinking that if i enable multicast :
- globally on the wisms, with mcast-mcast distribution
- on the SVI's for the wifi client vlans
- on te SVI's of the vlans for cisco aps
- on the SVI for AppleTV
- SVI for wism management
- SVI for the Bonjour gateway

then do i still need vlan select? Maybe a stupid question, but i m not sure how to interpret some things in this document.

Linksys Wireless Adapters :: How To Select Operating Channel On AE3000

Jul 18, 2012

I have an AE3000 dual band wireless adapter using the Win 7 Pro OS.  At work our routers all use the same SSID, but utilize different channels.  In terms of signal strength, the strongest signal is usually, but not always, one of the channels on the 2.4GHZ band (usually 11).  However, in terms of speed of connection and lack of overcrowding, the best signal is invariably one the channels on the 5GHZ band (usually 161).  My AE3000 will inevitably connect to the strongest signal (channel 11) even though it only slightly stronger than the signal on channel 161 and furnishes a much slower connection than that obtainable on channel 161.  Is there any way I can "force" the AE3000 to connect via channel 161 rather than channel 11?

Cisco Wireless :: AIR-LAP1242G / Apply Button Not Working When Changing AP Settings?

I am working on installing a new 2500 Controller with 2 AIR-LAP1242G's attached to it.  I have both registered and on the controller but I am having trouble moving one of them to a new IPS AP group that I created.  Furthermore, I noticed the default gateway is missing from the static ip settings and I am unable to add that as well.  When I add the default gateway and hit apply, the controller does nothing. Same thing for when I try to change my WIPS device to monitor mode.

A couple other things that I noticed is that when I go to AP groups and try to remove the AP's from the default group, there is no remove button when you go inside the default group like  I see when i go into my IPS group. The AP's are on software ver 12.4(23c)JA3 Boot ver 12.4.13.0 and the controller is at 7.0.22.0I have already power cycled the controller and both AP's.

I need to go back to the "Binding Settings" and hit "Save" - after that all my IDs appear in the ARP-List and everything is OK again.

Cisco :: Why To Apply Qos And When Not

Jul 11, 2011

You got lots of bandwidth, expected throughput is low, and anticipated queuing/congestion is insignificant? My understanding is that QoS will kick in when there is congestion or queuing on an interface. Since an interface could either be 100% utilized or 0% utilized, is it fair to say that at any given point there could be congestion or delay on an interface?I know that the higher the interface speed, the lower the serialization delay will be, which means the lower the delay will be to put bits on the wire. For a 10Gig link, where the serialization delay is incredibly short, I imagine that even with occasional congestion, the delay would be insignificant and not affect VoIP traffic. Would this be true?
