Could A Switch Be Used Instead Of Router For A Simple Network
Jan 14, 2011
I know the general difference between a router and a switch, but after considerable reading I'm unable to determine if I could just use a switch for my pretty simple specific application.
Here are the two devices I need to setup on my network (connections would be wired, both devices in close proximity): (1) computer running windows2k with 100mbps ethernet card (has software firewall installed) (1) blue ray player for streaming netflix videos
Because I don't have any computers on the network communicating with each other, based on what I've read it seems possible to just connect a switch to my cable modem instead of using a router.
I've been using WRT320N few days now and I am happy with it so far! It's not overheated as many people reported and performance is also great (wifi as well as gigabit ports). I tested all functions (NAT, Advanced Wireless Settings, Port Forwarding, Access Restrictions...) - all working great, but I am little stuck on the easiest one - configure it temporarily as regular gigabit switch with an IP address: I put my WAN cable and LAN cables in the 1-4 ethernet ports. NAT, DHCP and Firewall are disabled in the router. I have DHCP server in my network that is assigning IP addresses based on MAC address. In "Setup" > "Basic Setup" > "Router IP" I would like to set up automatic configuration - DHCP, but it is not possible, so I just type the same IP address that It should get from the DHCP server (in this case 10.109.249.42). Does all 1-4 ethernet ports have the same MAC address (in this case 00:25:9C:4D:16:86)? Everything is working fine, my computer's IP addresses are succesfully assigned (as well as wifi devices) from DHCP server in my network, but I feel like WRT320N's address is not assigned - the problem is I can't connect to router's administration under http://10.109.249.42. There is no IP restrictions for remote management.

I am trying to find out if its possible to use an existing CISCO 2940 Switch that we have here at our office as a hub? Im sure that borders on insane however, let me break down what we have currently and what I'd like to do.
We currently have a very nice setup here at work, with no problems whatsoever, however; we hired a new person and brought in some new printers and we are running out of wall jacks. Rather then run all new cabling and adding new outlets/faceplates etc... We were just gonna go purchase a simple Netgear 5 port switch/hub from the Local Comp store here in town. We found in our server room a what appears to fully functional and operational cisco 2940 8 Port Switch with a Gigabit port.
All IPs in the office are assigned via DHCP, so....on to the meat of my question -- I tried to plug this into our network and I can't get any connectivity out at all. All the ports light up green etc when I plug in the comps but they aren't pulling valid IPs.
I want to reset this thing and start from the ground up, I am not scared of going into the IOS and modifying what needs to be done...as long as I got a good enough walk through.
I would like to know if there is a way to monitor which programs/processes are using my network, say if there's something in the background updating that I can close to reduce lag in games, my computer is free of viruses and most the auto updates are turned off because I update them manually, so I just would like a simple straightforward answer, what program or process is using my network?
I would like to setup a simple VPN on a small network, nothing special, just to provide access to some simple resources on the network from anywhere. Since I'm not a Cisco expert, I was advised to user a 861 router, but I just can't seem to get the VPN working on this device.
I've placed the router behind a modem and did some basic configuration. Hosts who are connected to the modem (on the Vlan side) can access the internet and can setup a VPN connection to the router. A VPN connection from inside the network is worthless, but I just can't get the VPN working on the FastEthernet4 connection.
Any VPN config for a 861 router for this situation? Or how to configure this device as a VPN server?
I will be building my own computer here in the next month and am looking to become quite informed about building my own wireless network.Trouble is, I'm a bit out of to with what I need and what is good. I'm also officially tired of renting a modem from Comcast (bastards keep bumping my monthly rate up). So what pieces of equipment do I need to build a simple quality wireless network for my home? I would like the network to support two laptops, one desktop, and an Xbox plugged into a LAN line. Also, I'm thinking of using a Rosewill Wirelss Adapter 3 antenna [URL].
I have a home network using a 2600 and PIX515E, and unfortunetly I don't know how to set up ACLs. I read a few Cisco documentation but unfortunetly I am unable to grasp the concept of how to define them. Would anyone be able to give me a crash course on setting up ACLs?
We'll be building a small remote site that will use two Windows 2008 servers. We would like redundancy in firewalls, IPS's and switches. Is it better to buy stand-alone ASA 5510s (with embedded IPS's) and 2960s, or is it a better option to buy a Cat 6000 with FW modules. We'll have several internet IP addresses available.
Go to Control Panel. Click on Network and Sharing Center. Click on Wireless Network. Connection. (your nickname for router should be listed underneath). Click on Wireless Properties. Click on the Security tab up top. Click on the checkbox where it says “Show characters” and it should be spelled out for you.
I have one POTS line and a SIP account with Skype. I want to configure my SPA3102 to take all incoming POTS calls (so I don't have to change my phone number or use up my bandwidth all the time). I want all local calls (303 and 720 area code) and possibly 911 (if possible) to go out the POTS line, but all long distance to go to SIP account on SKYPE. Pretty simple, but I can't find a wizard or samples in the documentation or firmware for the SPA3102.
i am trying to configure Cisco 861 router for simple internet access using my broadband connection. despite of all my efforts, I am not able to browse any site from my directly connected PC having IP address 192.168.1.254/24. but I can ping all internet destinations from router prompt. I believe, I am having problem in NAT becuase I do not see any stats or translations. I have attached the output of running configuration, sh version, sh ip nat stat, sh ip nat trans and sh ip route.
i have a simple router on a stick config which is providing dhcp to a customer SSID. however i don't want employees to stay on it and eat the band width since its open. the lease is set to an hour, is there anyway that i could set it so that once your lease expired it can't be renewed for 4 about 8 hours? I am using a cisco 2600 router in this setup.
I've currently got my network setup similar to the picture below, except:
1. I only have PC1 and PC3 connected. Both PCs are running Windows 7. 2. I've got an XBox and PS3 connected to the router
My ISP provides two IP addresses, PC1 has its own IP and the Router has the other one. All devices are able to connect to the internet; however, PC1 is not able to communicate with the devices connected to the router. Is there anyway to get this network to work? I basically want it as if all devices were just connected to the router, but with PC1 having its own IP, and the Router having its own IP.I've used the exact same configuration in the past with both computers running Windows XP and was able to get the two computers to communicate by installing some protocol. However, I heard that the protocol was really outdated or something and not good to use for security reasons, but it did what I wanted it to do so I used it.
how I would go about adding a network switch to my wireless router. Upstairs with the modem is a Netgear N600 set up as a base station and downstairs I have another Netgear N600 repeating both the b/g and n signals. I now have a Linksys EtherFast 4-port switch that I want to add into the network on the repeating router.
I have a new Siemens router and have set up my old LinkSys router as a switch (set DNS outside the IP range of the primary router, disabled DHCP server, connect LAN to LAN port). The SSIDs are still different. As a result each device now sees 2 networks and although internet GW is available from either connection, not al resources are shared across the network. There is one driveshare (with wired connection to the secondary switch) which cannot be seen by some of the wireless resources on the same secondary network.Questions:1. How can I set up the NW config such that it is seen and behaves like one physical network, anbd roaming devices pick up the signal from the strongest access point?
So I am contemplating the setup for the network in my new home, how to connect 24+ ethernet ports in the house to a single network. I was thinking of getting a nice dual-band wireless router, but those usually only come with 4 or so lan ports. How would I then utilize a large 24- or 48-port switch to connect everything to the router?
I switch the ports between my laptop and PS3 whenever I go to my room, but now that I'm setting up another system downstairs, I'll need more Ethernet ports. Everything is running on a Gigabit network, and I'd like to keep it that way. What I'm thinking is adding this:

Do I set it up like this? Modem > Router > Switch > Other Stuff. I'm guessing I only connect one port on my router to the switch, but can I use the other 3 ports on the router or do I have to use the ports on the switch? If what I am thinking is correct, any better recommendation for a switch? I'd prefer a square-rack mount- ish type so I can have my modem and router on top of it.
Ex: Actually my problem is, i'm using Dlink 8 port switch, and 40 computers connected indirectly to that switch, few times getting issues like packet drops, internet connecting & disconnecting etc. so i want to know either the switch is capable or not.
I have 24 port switch which is already connected to internet through static IP. Now I want to use a router as a wireless device to use internet. How do I connect router to switch?
I've had a Linksys WRT54GS running DD-WRT (build 14929) for a while. I recently bought another Linksys (Cisco) router (WRT160NL) and installed DD-WRT on it (build 16785).
I'd like to keep the WRT54GS as my main router since it is very stable and use the WRT160NL as a network switch, NAS device, and asterisk server. I already have samba installed, configured, and running fine on the 160. However, the 160 is running as a router so only devices connected to it can access network shares.
How can I configure the 160 so that all devices in my network can access its network shares?
I have a 24-hour running computer that I want to make a small and simple server for personal useim: to put some photos on the server for my target audience from China. I have a 24 hour running computer located in my small flat in China. The purpose to make this is to provide a fast speed loading for average users in China? The links for the photo should be in format
I am assuming, that the slowest component on a network determines the connect speed? I am having a small network with 4 pcs and 2 of them show 1GB connect speed while the other 2 show 100MB. What would cause 2 units to run at the 100MB speed on a Gigabyte-Switch and Router?
Have a home network: 2 desktops & 2 printers wired to router (linksys e4200) Want to add nettalk for VOIP telephone service. All ports on the router are taken. What to do?
im using a intel mother board desktop pc and windows xp. i was tray to add external wireless modem .the modem drivers already install successfully but its not working properly it working only 1st 5 to 10 minute.my pci simple communications controller also not installed
I need to configure ADSL on my 837 Router with simple configuration. The WAN IP address is dynamic from my ISP. I checked many websites and found different configurations everywhere. I don't know which is best suited for me. I used SDM and configured ADSL. When i checked the configuration from console i found that there is atm0.2 and dialer 2 configured with my settings. I cannot understand what is the purpose of atm0.2 and dialer 2 when atm0 and dialer0 are there. Is there a doc on ADSL config on 837?

on my home network I currently only run an Airlink101 AR675W router. We have a couple issues with this. The router for one is in my basement and there are points in my house that have low signal strength, especially upstairs in the far corners of the home. Second is I am currently running my home PC as a media center but it is set-up wirlessly so streaming is clunky and jittery. Also on this network is 3 X-box's wired, a PS3 running wirless, 2 PC's wired in, 2 wirless laptops and the afore mentioned wirless PC. A lot of weight for the network. What I want to do is move the router upstairs, hardwire it into my wireless PC (the one doing the streaming) and connect a second router (an identical make and model I am buying this weekend) downstairs which will be basically used as an "expansion" of the wirless and a switch for the hardwired devices downstairs. would this be better than simply moving the wirless router upstairs (hardwiring my PC) and putting a 5 or 8 port switch in downstairs for the X-box's and 2 wired PC's there?
Our desktop is connected to a cable modem and I always connected wireless with my laptop. When I changed my linksys wireless adapter I tried to get on the internet and it would not connect to the linksys router, so I then do not know exactly what I did,but the result was that i finally had a connection. That was a month ago and I finally looked at the network mapping after I noticed the desktop was on a lan network and the cable connection was flagged. Apparently, I created something called a switch with the router and now I have a whole new network in my name that has the cable connection.
I've been trying to set up Simple file and printer sharing between two desktops with plans to add a third, a laptop. All are running Windows XP SP3. One has XP Pro and the other has XP Home. (The laptop will be XP Pro.) All are connected wireless. They share a connection to the internet through a cable modem and a Linksys router. Each desktop has a USB wireless adapter. I set up a few folders on each to share along with a printer on the XP Home machine. Right away, the XP Home machine was able to access the folders on the XP Pro machine. Alas, not the other way round. It seems I don't have "permission to access the resource".
