how I would go about adding a network switch to my wireless router. Upstairs with the modem is a Netgear N600 set up as a base station and downstairs I have another Netgear N600 repeating both the b/g and n signals. I now have a Linksys EtherFast 4-port switch that I want to add into the network on the repeating router.
Our desktop is connected to a cable modem and I always connected wireless with my laptop. When I changed my linksys wireless adapter I tried to get on the internet and it would not connect to the linksys router, so I then do not know exactly what I did,but the result was that i finally had a connection. That was a month ago and I finally looked at the network mapping after I noticed the desktop was on a lan network and the cable connection was flagged. Apparently, I created something called a switch with the router and now I have a whole new network in my name that has the cable connection.
I've currently got my network setup similar to the picture below, except:
1. I only have PC1 and PC3 connected. Both PCs are running Windows 7. 2. I've got an XBox and PS3 connected to the router
My ISP provides two IP addresses, PC1 has its own IP and the Router has the other one. All devices are able to connect to the internet; however, PC1 is not able to communicate with the devices connected to the router. Is there anyway to get this network to work? I basically want it as if all devices were just connected to the router, but with PC1 having its own IP, and the Router having its own IP.I've used the exact same configuration in the past with both computers running Windows XP and was able to get the two computers to communicate by installing some protocol. However, I heard that the protocol was really outdated or something and not good to use for security reasons, but it did what I wanted it to do so I used it.
I know the general difference between a router and a switch, but after considerable reading I'm unable to determine if I could just use a switch for my pretty simple specific application.
Here are the two devices I need to setup on my network (connections would be wired, both devices in close proximity): (1) computer running windows2k with 100mbps ethernet card (has software firewall installed) (1) blue ray player for streaming netflix videos
Because I don't have any computers on the network communicating with each other, based on what I've read it seems possible to just connect a switch to my cable modem instead of using a router.
I have a new Siemens router and have set up my old LinkSys router as a switch (set DNS outside the IP range of the primary router, disabled DHCP server, connect LAN to LAN port). The SSIDs are still different. As a result each device now sees 2 networks and although internet GW is available from either connection, not al resources are shared across the network. There is one driveshare (with wired connection to the secondary switch) which cannot be seen by some of the wireless resources on the same secondary network.Questions:1. How can I set up the NW config such that it is seen and behaves like one physical network, anbd roaming devices pick up the signal from the strongest access point?
So I am contemplating the setup for the network in my new home, how to connect 24+ ethernet ports in the house to a single network. I was thinking of getting a nice dual-band wireless router, but those usually only come with 4 or so lan ports. How would I then utilize a large 24- or 48-port switch to connect everything to the router?
I switch the ports between my laptop and PS3 whenever I go to my room, but now that I'm setting up another system downstairs, I'll need more Ethernet ports. Everything is running on a Gigabit network, and I'd like to keep it that way. What I'm thinking is adding this:

Do I set it up like this? Modem > Router > Switch > Other Stuff. I'm guessing I only connect one port on my router to the switch, but can I use the other 3 ports on the router or do I have to use the ports on the switch? If what I am thinking is correct, any better recommendation for a switch? I'd prefer a square-rack mount- ish type so I can have my modem and router on top of it.
Ex: Actually my problem is, i'm using Dlink 8 port switch, and 40 computers connected indirectly to that switch, few times getting issues like packet drops, internet connecting & disconnecting etc. so i want to know either the switch is capable or not.
I have 24 port switch which is already connected to internet through static IP. Now I want to use a router as a wireless device to use internet. How do I connect router to switch?
I've had a Linksys WRT54GS running DD-WRT (build 14929) for a while. I recently bought another Linksys (Cisco) router (WRT160NL) and installed DD-WRT on it (build 16785).
I'd like to keep the WRT54GS as my main router since it is very stable and use the WRT160NL as a network switch, NAS device, and asterisk server. I already have samba installed, configured, and running fine on the 160. However, the 160 is running as a router so only devices connected to it can access network shares.
How can I configure the 160 so that all devices in my network can access its network shares?
I am assuming, that the slowest component on a network determines the connect speed? I am having a small network with 4 pcs and 2 of them show 1GB connect speed while the other 2 show 100MB. What would cause 2 units to run at the 100MB speed on a Gigabyte-Switch and Router?
Have a home network: 2 desktops & 2 printers wired to router (linksys e4200) Want to add nettalk for VOIP telephone service. All ports on the router are taken. What to do?
on my home network I currently only run an Airlink101 AR675W router. We have a couple issues with this. The router for one is in my basement and there are points in my house that have low signal strength, especially upstairs in the far corners of the home. Second is I am currently running my home PC as a media center but it is set-up wirlessly so streaming is clunky and jittery. Also on this network is 3 X-box's wired, a PS3 running wirless, 2 PC's wired in, 2 wirless laptops and the afore mentioned wirless PC. A lot of weight for the network. What I want to do is move the router upstairs, hardwire it into my wireless PC (the one doing the streaming) and connect a second router (an identical make and model I am buying this weekend) downstairs which will be basically used as an "expansion" of the wirless and a switch for the hardwired devices downstairs. would this be better than simply moving the wirless router upstairs (hardwiring my PC) and putting a 5 or 8 port switch in downstairs for the X-box's and 2 wired PC's there?
I already have a wireless router but the signal strength doesn't seem to penetrate brick walls well. I want to add another wireless switch to access the same Internet but am not sure exactly what I should purchase. I know I don't want another router, so what should I buy?
1. Green Packet DX-230 WiMAX modem with router 2. D-Link DIR-615 ver G2 (from my ISP) 3. D-Link 8 port desktop switch
I previously used the DIR-615 with my high speed broadband connection. However I had to move to a new house and here I can only get WiMAX. I want to...Place the WiMAX modem upstairs to serve as modem and wireless access point Have the DIR-615 function as the main router and firewall (downstairs) Use the switch to connect all the rooms in my house FYI my WiMAX modem has no connection configurations. I just plug it in and it'll connect automatically to the WiMAX signal. It has 2 LAN ports but no WAN port. From my understanding of networking, I have to turn off DHCP on my WiMAX modem, put it in the same IP range as my DIR-615 (192.168.0.100-199), and disable UPNP and NATPMP. After this I'm stuck. How do I tell my DIR-615 to use the WiMAX modem as it's WAN connection?Should I reserve an IP for the modem in my DIR-615?
I'm looking to connect my 50+ drops I have in my home based business. I transfer large files 5+gigs on a regular basis between the machines. I currently just have some cheap Netgear 8port, gigabyte switch's but when transferring files I max out around 12-15mb/sec. This takes WAY too long to transfer files.
I need a network switch so I can get my speeds up to 60+mb/sec at least. (my seconds job office has this ability)
What would I need to get this kind of speed? All my cabling is CAT6, with CAT6 ends. Would I need a managed switch to get this kind of speed?
I was looking at a couple switches. Cisco Sg 100-24 24-PORT Gigabit Switch $374 or Cheaper option Netgear Prosafe GS724T-300NAS 24 Port Gigabit Smart Switch W/ Rack Mount Kit $199
Or is there something else I could go with in this price range?
Have a 400N wireless router that has been working fine with several wireless devices on a small home network for about a year. Nothing has been changed but suddenly all of the wireless wireless devices dropped offline and none see the network signal in their search to reconnect. All of the indicator lights on the router look good and I have unplugged power and reconnected first the cable modem and then the router but still no signal. Logging into the router seems to show that it is working OK but there is apparently no air signal for the client devices to detect so only the wired devices are showing up. It's as if everything is working except the antenna function. Are there any suggestions short of uninstalling and reinstalling the whole set up and see what happens? I have taken my laptop to a nearby hotspot and confirmed that it is receiving other network signals fine so it has to be something to do with the router itself.
I need to switch back to my old router currently I am using the EA6500 in the GUI of the latest firmware there is no longer a button "Release IP Address" but it has been replaced with "Release and Renew" button this is causing that the IP address lease form ISP never gets released and I can not switch the routers.
I have been charged by our technician to find a 5-8 port gigabit switch with a wireless option built in. This will be part of a build out that he is doing that includes a
I was told if he had to have a router to be sure that he can turn off the routing abilties. As I peruse through the definitions of various wireless routers with additional ports I don't see this option spelled out.
in our living room there lies our desktop with a modem which i believe is in bridged mode hooked up to a 4 port router that provides wireless connection as well but is sort of old and brand is from CD-R king, then from that router all the way to my bedroom is connected to a switch via a 25 meter Ethernet cable providing wired connection to my personal desktop and 1 laptop(wanted 100Mbps than 54.0Mbps plus less chance of getting intermittent connection to the laptop and we play LAN games with me on desktop and bro on laptop), and i was wondering, if i hook up a router to my switch will it also be possible to provide wireless connection to that as well?
Recently I was setting up my new Medion computer and it very quickly came up with four local networks which were mine and three of my neighbours.I fed in my Router password etc and it immediately was wirelessly on line.Very impressed but I have another computer and two DVD recorders which also access the internet but via wired connections to the router. It occured to me that it would be safer if I only used wired connections to the router and did that with the Medion which is only three feet from the Router. Thereby stopping my router broadcasting to the neighbourhood. Is it possible to switch off the Router wireless broadcasting and if so would it really be a safety measure? and be a benefit. The Router is a D-Link DKT-810.I can't see anything in the book about switching off the wireless, I suppose it just assumes you would want it.I don't have any requirement to have a wireless connection anywhere in the house as all my gear is static.
Our network is being handled by a SonicWall Firewall. How do I find the IP address of the wireless router connected to the network switch. I am trying to reset the password of the wireless router.
My main PC and modem is in a back room of the house, my secondary PC and game systems are in the living room.My main PC HAS to have a wired internet connection because that is what I want.My game systems and second PC need a wired connection.I would like to have my D-Link wireless router in the living room so I can use the WiFi for my iPods, iPad, laptop, and anything else that I am looking at when I am sitting on the front porch. I have an Epson printer that I can hook up to my network that I want to be in the back room with my main PC.To get the internet into the living room I am going to run a CAT5E ethernet cable under my house (off the ground and away from electric wires and copper pipe) from my back room to the living room.Is it possible for me to go from the modem to a switch box (I actually have two switch boxes, but I believe I will only need one)which would be connected to my main PC, the printer, and the ethernet wire going under the house to the living room... Then in the living room have the wire that comes from under the house (from the back room) go directly into the wireless router and then from the router have cables going to my game systems and the second PC?If this will work, will I still be able to control the wireless router with my main PC?
My goal is to have my modem in the basement connect to a switch (D-Link 10/100/1000 8 port) so it can split wired connections to 6 different computers. One of those wired connections will be connected to a wireless router (D-link DIR655) on the 2nd floor.
How would I connect all this up? How would I set this up for each router?
I am having a problem setting up an Access Point. Here is my configuration. I have a Comcast Cable Modem that plugs in to a 24 port Netgear Switch. From the switch it plugs into a Linksys N wireless router with an IP of 10.1.10.76. I don't know the linksys model. But it is fairly new. I also have a Netgear WN604 N Access Point that plugs in to the same switch in another location away from the wireless router about 75+ft.
I configured the access point's IP to be 10.1.10.130 with DHCP off and DNS as 10.1.10.1. The cable modems default Gateway is 10.1.10.1 and it handles the dhcp which is provided to the switch were both the wireless router and access point get there IP's. I can't set it up so that the cable modem plugs in to the wireless router first then the switch because of a security system that is setup to the Comcast Cable Modem.
My Goal is to the the same identical SSID and Password for both the Linksys and Access point. I don't think I can set it up as a repeater because it's to far away from the linksys router.
I recently bought a Netgear switch in order to hook up to wired PCs to my modem. I also have a ASUS n53 wireless router that I am trying to connect to the switch. The problem is I can't seem to get internet access to the wireless router I have tried setting it up as an access point, I have tried disabling the DHCP on it.
I have an old wireless router lying behind me and I want to use that old router as a switch. That old router is a knock-off,no-name router brand called "Gigafast" and the model number is WF19-CAPR. There are also variants to that router name as well. The router that I currently have is a Linksys WRT54G wireless-G router. I'm planning to upgrade the wireless router in favor of Wireless-N in the near future.I want to know how can I use that particular Gigafast router as a switch and I want to link that router up to my WRT54G router. The scenario goes as follows:
Cable internet connection ----> WRT54G router ---> Gigafast router (as a switch)
The IP address for the WRT54G router is 192.168.1.1, while the Gigafast router is 192.168.1.254. I may know by now that I have to disable DHCP on the gigafast router and I have to change an IP address to something that is "not in range" with the WRT54G router, am I right?I want to expand the number of ports, so I can connect with future devices such as a VoIP ATA adapter, a laptop and possibly an entertainment box (i.e. Apple TV or Boxee box)
[code] I have tried to configure this setup and have had no luck, and in the proccess have learned enough about networking to be really dangerous to my equipment. Is the problem DHCP? or incorporating MAC routing with IP routing? I'm pretty sure I've managed to program one of my keyboard buttons into a World Delete Function,.
Upstairs I have my internet coming in with a Comcast modem/ router ( I will be bridging this b'cuz it sucks as a router). Also, I have my Dir 655 upstairs that I will use for wireless. and I have my dir615 downstairs and I want to use it as a basic switch/wired router. How do I set up my dir615 as a switch/wired router?
I have 2 WRVS4400N's availible to be. One is running my network and security connected to my WAN.I want to use the other one stricly as a switch or even adding wireless repeat of my current wireless LAN.
I have an E2000 that I was given as a gift. I would like to use at it my office for a switch at my cubicle where I can connect 2-3 computers simultaneously. I am in a large network and am a user only. When I hooked the E2000 up today my computers would not get internet access BUT my laptop got wireless access and internet.
