Looking For A Wireless Switch (not Router)

May 27, 2011

I have been charged by our technician to find a 5-8 port gigabit switch with a wireless option built in. This will be part of a build out that he is doing that includes a

NETGEAR ProSafe FS726TP Smart Switch - Switch - managed - 24 x 10/100 + 2 x combo Gigabit SFP - desktop - PoE

I was told if he had to have a router to be sure that he can turn off the routing abilties. As I peruse through the definitions of various wireless routers with additional ports I don't see this option spelled out.

Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT400N Router Suddenly Has No Apparent Wireless Switch

Jul 18, 2011

Have a 400N wireless router that has been working fine with several wireless devices on a small home network for about a year. Nothing has been changed but suddenly all of the wireless wireless devices dropped offline and none see the network signal in their search to reconnect. All of the indicator lights on the router look good and I have unplugged power and reconnected first the cable modem and then the router but still no signal. Logging into the router seems to show that it is working OK but there is apparently no air signal for the client devices to detect so only the wired devices are showing up. It's as if everything is working except the antenna function. Are there any suggestions short of uninstalling and reinstalling the whole set up and see what happens? I have taken my laptop to a nearby hotspot and confirmed that it is receiving other network signals fine so it has to be something to do with the router itself.

Wireless Router To Switch To Another One?

Feb 15, 2012

in our living room there lies our desktop with a modem which i believe is in bridged mode hooked up to a 4 port router that provides wireless connection as well but is sort of old and brand is from CD-R king, then from that router all the way to my bedroom is connected to a switch via a 25 meter Ethernet cable providing wired connection to my personal desktop and 1 laptop(wanted 100Mbps than 54.0Mbps plus less chance of getting intermittent connection to the laptop and we play LAN games with me on desktop and bro on laptop), and i was wondering, if i hook up a router to my switch will it also be possible to provide wireless connection to that as well?

Switch Off The Router Wireless Broadcasting?

Feb 27, 2011

Recently I was setting up my new Medion computer and it very quickly came up with four local networks which were mine and three of my neighbours.I fed in my Router password etc and it immediately was wirelessly on line.Very impressed but I have another computer and two DVD recorders which also access the internet but via wired connections to the router. It occured to me that it would be safer if I only used wired connections to the router and did that with the Medion which is only three feet from the Router. Thereby stopping my router broadcasting to the neighbourhood. Is it possible to switch off the Router wireless broadcasting and if so would it really be a safety measure? and be a benefit. The Router is a D-Link DKT-810.I can't see anything in the book about switching off the wireless, I suppose it just assumes you would want it.I don't have any requirement to have a wireless connection anywhere in the house as all my gear is static.

Can A Wireless Router Work Off Of An Ethernet Switch

Jun 17, 2012

My main PC and modem is in a back room of the house, my secondary PC and game systems are in the living room.My main PC HAS to have a wired internet connection because that is what I want.My game systems and second PC need a wired connection.I would like to have my D-Link wireless router in the living room so I can use the WiFi for my iPods, iPad, laptop, and anything else that I am looking at when I am sitting on the front porch. I have an Epson printer that I can hook up to my network that I want to be in the back room with my main PC.To get the internet into the living room I am going to run a CAT5E ethernet cable under my house (off the ground and away from electric wires and copper pipe) from my back room to the living room.Is it possible for me to go from the modem to a switch box (I actually have two switch boxes, but I believe I will only need one)which would be connected to my main PC, the printer, and the ethernet wire going under the house to the living room... Then in the living room have the wire that comes from under the house (from the back room) go directly into the wireless router and then from the router have cables going to my game systems and the second PC?If this will work, will I still be able to control the wireless router with my main PC?

Wireless Router Access Point And Switch

Sep 10, 2012

I am having a problem setting up an Access Point. Here is my configuration. I have a Comcast Cable Modem that plugs in to a 24 port Netgear Switch. From the switch it plugs into a Linksys N wireless router with an IP of 10.1.10.76. I don't know the linksys model. But it is fairly new. I also have a Netgear WN604 N Access Point that plugs in to the same switch in another location away from the wireless router about 75+ft.

I configured the access point's IP to be 10.1.10.130 with DHCP off and DNS as 10.1.10.1. The cable modems default Gateway is 10.1.10.1 and it handles the dhcp which is provided to the switch were both the wireless router and access point get there IP's. I can't set it up so that the cable modem plugs in to the wireless router first then the switch because of a security system that is setup to the Comcast Cable Modem.

My Goal is to the the same identical SSID and Password for both the Linksys and Access point. I don't think I can set it up as a repeater because it's to far away from the linksys router.

Using An Old Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router As A Switch?

May 4, 2012

I have an old wireless router lying behind me and I want to use that old router as a switch. That old router is a knock-off,no-name router brand called "Gigafast" and the model number is WF19-CAPR. There are also variants to that router name as well. The router that I currently have is a Linksys WRT54G wireless-G router. I'm planning to upgrade the wireless router in favor of Wireless-N in the near future.I want to know how can I use that particular Gigafast router as a switch and I want to link that router up to my WRT54G router. The scenario goes as follows:

Cable internet connection ----> WRT54G router ---> Gigafast router (as a switch)

The IP address for the WRT54G router is 192.168.1.1, while the Gigafast router is 192.168.1.254. I may know by now that I have to disable DHCP on the gigafast router and I have to change an IP address to something that is "not in range" with the WRT54G router, am I right?I want to expand the number of ports, so I can connect with future devices such as a VoIP ATA adapter, a laptop and possibly an entertainment box (i.e. Apple TV or Boxee box)

Linksys Wireless Router :: Connecting Switch To E4200?

Nov 24, 2012

Have a Linksys E4200 router located in my basement and I am experiencing a puzzling wired connectivity issue as follows:  Port 1 on the router is for my study, I have no problem getting connection regardless  if I use my study's Ethernet jack or if I run a 5 ft. cable (hereinafter THE CABLE) from the router’s  port 1 to my laptop (i.e., cabling does not make a difference).I then connect to router port 1 an EZXS55W Linksys switch (using port 1 on the switch and THE CABLE) and then connect my laptop to port 2 on the switch using a second cable.  I am unable to connect to the network/internet even after rebooting both the cable modem and router.I then reconnect my study to port 1 on the router, I go to my study and connect the study’s Ethernet  jack using THE CABLE to port 1 on the switch and using a second cable from port 2 on the switch to my laptop. …. I get an network/internet connection immediately !  FYI, I have had the exact problem with switches EZXS88W and SE2500 (no longer own this).

Modem To Gigabit Switch To E1200 Wireless Router For DHCP?

The first part, is this even possible? Modem to switch.

Second part, e1200 router plugged into switch, handles DHCP for the switch.

Plug gigabit computers into the switch, non gigabit/wireless devices into the e1200 router.

If e1200 can't handle DHCP for the switch, could I configure a DHCP linux server directly to the switch?

I don't want to limit my network to my e1200 speeds when I have a gigabit capable modem and a gigabit capable switch.

TP-Link Dual-Band Wireless :: Use WDR4300 As Switch Rather Than Router?

Dec 6, 2012

Region : UnitedStates
Model : TL-WDR4300
Hardware Version : Not Clear
Firmware Version :
ISP : Verizon DSL

My DSL connection comes into our house in the basement and the DSL modem came with a router included. I bought the WDR4300 for the higher speed wireless connections and the gigabit ports. I really don't need the "router" functionality. I would like to put the WDR4300 on the second floor to give (hopefully) the broadest wireless range. However, I would like all my PCs (including those wirelessly connected) to be on the same sub-net. Is there a way to configure the WDR4300 so it acts like a switch rather than a router?

Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT320N Used As Simple Gigabit Switch?

Dec 4, 2009

I've been using WRT320N few days now and I am happy with it so far! It's not overheated as many people reported and performance is also great (wifi as well as gigabit ports). I tested all functions (NAT, Advanced Wireless Settings, Port Forwarding, Access Restrictions...) - all working great, but I am little stuck on the easiest one - configure it temporarily as regular gigabit switch with an IP address: I put my WAN cable and LAN cables in the 1-4 ethernet ports. NAT, DHCP and Firewall are disabled in the router. I have DHCP server in my network that is assigning IP addresses based on MAC address. In "Setup" > "Basic Setup" > "Router IP" I would like to set up automatic configuration - DHCP, but it is not possible, so I just type the same IP address that It should get from the DHCP server (in this case 10.109.249.42). Does all 1-4 ethernet ports have the same MAC address (in this case 00:25:9C:4D:16:86)? Everything is working fine, my computer's IP addresses are succesfully assigned (as well as wifi devices) from DHCP server in my network, but I feel like WRT320N's address is not assigned - the problem is I can't connect to router's administration under http://10.109.249.42. There is no IP restrictions for remote management.
