Have a home network: 2 desktops & 2 printers wired to router (linksys e4200) Want to add nettalk for VOIP telephone service. All ports on the router are taken. What to do?
View 1 RepliesI have a hobby network at home, the structure of which follows:*Modem * - active SPI firewall -- Then the E4200 distributes data via wifi to/between the following machines --*Server - providing services such as http, FTP, VPN, Mail, MySQL, OpenDirectory, Plex media server, etc.*Two other workstations that access their user details/settings from open directory on the server.Now the purpose of this network other than providing standard access to Internet services from within the LAN is to provide access to the services maintained on my server to users on my LAN when they leave it/go mobile.Now with my limited knowledge of networking I have been using port forwarding to direct service requests through the firewall, however I have found with the E4200 that I have a limited number of custom port fields to use (about 15) which is extremely limiting when I have as many potential services that my server can provide.I could move the Server to a DMZ but then dosen't that put all my other services that have no need to be exposed at unnecessary risk.Do I need to invest in a separate hardware firewall and put it after the modem and before the router?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a home network with a Linksys E4200 connected to the ISP's fiber box. The problem is that when I'm connected to the Linksys, either wired or wireless, the connection to the internet will drop after what seems to be a random amount of time (normally anywhere from 2-10 minutes). I can restore the connection by doing any of these things:-reboot Linksys-disconnect and reconnect cable from router to fiber box-if on wireless connection, make changes to the router wifi settings, like change the wifi channel.The internal network stays up, and I can ping both the internal and external ip of the router, but not the fiber box. I have also had the same behavior with an Edimax Wifi AP and less frequently with a Edimax router (once every 1-2 days). I have done everything I can think of:-changed the wifi channels-changed the ip ranges, subnets, turned router DHCP off and back on-booted the fiber box-changed cables-updated all routers to the latest firmware, the network cards with latest drivers...and loads other things that I don't remember right now. For the wifi side of things, there are no other networks in range that could interfere. The same problem occurs on both my and wife's Win 7 laptops and on the iMac (latest OSX). Here's a fun detail: while the Linksys has lost its connection to the internet, I can still access the internet through the old Edimax router connected to the same fiber box, either wired or wireless.
View 1 Replies View RelatedOur desktop is connected to a cable modem and I always connected wireless with my laptop. When I changed my linksys wireless adapter I tried to get on the internet and it would not connect to the linksys router, so I then do not know exactly what I did,but the result was that i finally had a connection. That was a month ago and I finally looked at the network mapping after I noticed the desktop was on a lan network and the cable connection was flagged. Apparently, I created something called a switch with the router and now I have a whole new network in my name that has the cable connection.

What I would like to do is isolate "Machine C", so that it cannot communicate with "A" or "B" and vice versa. It should be an entirely separate entity.
Let's say I'm using a Linksys E4200. Is there a good way to configure the above scenario with the default firmware? Is it possible with non-default firmware such as DD-WRT or Tomato? I do not have experience with this but have no problem learning.
My understanding is that this can be done by placing "Machine C" in the DMZ. Unfortunately, I am told a lot of home routers do not have a secure way of setting up DMZ by default. The two routers solution can work but still requires restricting administrative access from "Machine C" and adds an additional potential point of failure.

I recently upgraded to the Motorola SB6120 and the Linksys E4200. I can not access my LG NAS from outside of my network now. UPnP is enabled, port forwarding is enabled, but I must be missing some other setting that is blocking me from accessing it from work for example.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using an e4200 router, Windows 7 64-bit, ipad and iphone. The issue that I am having is that the iPad and iPhone cannot maintain a connection iTunes via Home Sharing. When I start iTunes I am able to access Home Sharing on the iPhone and iPad. If I don't connect right away I will lose this capability. Also, the connection is lost after a seeminingly random amount of time. Also, when if I using the iPhone to listen to music and I pick up my iPad and access the wireless network, the phone gets kicked off Home Sharing. The only way to remedy the situation is to re-start iTunes on my computer. I've been messing around with every setting.

I need only wifi accesspoint with 2 bands and 300Mbps bandwith. Is there a big difference between E4200 or E3200 or E2500? I know that E4200 supports 450Mbps, but I am not planning to buy new devices which could go faster than 300Mbps. Beside of technical parameters in technical specyfication is there a difference in wifi bandwith or tranmission between wifi and cable network?

View 1 Replies View Relatedon my home network I currently only run an Airlink101 AR675W router. We have a couple issues with this. The router for one is in my basement and there are points in my house that have low signal strength, especially upstairs in the far corners of the home. Second is I am currently running my home PC as a media center but it is set-up wirlessly so streaming is clunky and jittery. Also on this network is 3 X-box's wired, a PS3 running wirless, 2 PC's wired in, 2 wirless laptops and the afore mentioned wirless PC. A lot of weight for the network. What I want to do is move the router upstairs, hardwire it into my wireless PC (the one doing the streaming) and connect a second router (an identical make and model I am buying this weekend) downstairs which will be basically used as an "expansion" of the wirless and a switch for the hardwired devices downstairs. would this be better than simply moving the wirless router upstairs (hardwiring my PC) and putting a 5 or 8 port switch in downstairs for the X-box's and 2 wired PC's there?

I have an existing wireless G network with ActionTec router for VERIZON FIOS. I just added the E4200 router for wireless N. I have latest firmware, 1.0.03. Version 1 hardware.
We are getting a couple of laptops for holidays and would like these to be able use wireless N. I have older laptop/itouch/roku device that use wireless G/B network from ActionTec router. I would like to keep the ActionTec router for wireless G/B, so that both 2.4 and 5.0 ghz networks are Wireless N only.
I have both routers configured so that ActionTec is primary with DHCP and the e4200 is secondary, setup in bridge mode, with DHCP off and static ip of 192.168.1.2. Used this for guidance -> [URL]
I have one SID for ActionTec Wireless G network and this is set for Channel 1
I have a different SID for e4200 Wireless N network, same for 2.4 and 5.0 and I left defaults on other wireless settings.
I have the wireless guest network up and running just fine. But, I need to also connect to the router's quest network via one of the ethernet ports. Can I just give the LAN-conencted PC a 192.168.3.x static IP to access the guest network? I am assuming there is no VLAN functionality...
And even better, can I set up a DHCP relationship to that port? So that any device plugged into the port will get a IP on that subnet?
I have e4200 router set up with different SSIDs for 2.4ghz and 5ghz. My laptop (Lenovo x220 with Intel 6205 wireless adapter) can't see the 5ghz network. I've tried changing the channel for the 5ghz network and it didn't fix the problem.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI cannot get the Guest Network feature to work.Even though Guest SSID is enabled, it does not show up on any devices attempting to connect. Manually connecting by entering the Guest SSID fails (not recognized). On devices with the primary 5 and 2.4 GHz configured they do see the third network but without SSID (unknown) and are also unable to connect to it manually using the SSID.I did not try this before 1.0.02. Have rebooted modem and verified all configs (multiple times). The network is live in an office and can't keep screwing with it or drastically changing its settings.
View 9 Replies View Relatedmy general internet connectivity with my e4200.I have a new but similar problem today with the same router.After powering down equipment and moving it around, my wired connections all error. Error in that they will not get an IP address nor will they connect to the internet or each other.My wireless connections still work flawlessly.
I tried powering down the devices over night (to avoid any heating issues) and then powering up but the results are the same. I am obviously missing something, and don't really want to start my network from scratch again...
I'm trying to block two URL's over the entire network via my E4200. I'm having a heck of a time doing this, I loginto my router via the browser (the web setup) (because I think Cisco Connect on the Mac is about the worst software ever written.) And I go to the Access Restrictions page. There I understand I'll have to use the Internet Access Policy pane to make some more advanced settings than the Parental Control.
I enter a name for my rule, so far so good. Enable it. Go to the applied PC page. Open the page to enter MAC adresses and IP's. I go to the IP Address Range field and entere in the box numbered 01; 192.168.2.2 to 192.168.2.51 which in my case is the enitre network. Save the setttings and close that window.
I don't set Access Restriction to deny becasue that seems to block the entire network.
So I go the the Website Blocking by URL Address option and enter the URL I want to block.
I don't do anything wiht the the Blocked Applications since I don't want to block a specific service or application. So I click Save Settings.
And yet when I go to the URL I want to block it doesn't work! [URL]
I've been playing around with my E4200 but cannot find the right combination of settings. My problem: I bought the router for cable internet that never happened. In the meantime I am accessing the web using a 3G dongle. Hoewever, while connected to the router (wired or wireless), all the PC's in my home refuses to access the 3G internet - it is as if it wants to use the E4200 to access the net, no matter what. So every time I want to access the internet, I have to disconnect the PC from the home network, and connect with the 3G on that particulat PC. (I have three PC's at home, 1 wired and two wireless). If I set the E4200 to bridge mode, I struggle to find a logical IP address, since I would ideally like to run the network at 192.168.1.X. How do I set the E4200 to allow a home network to be established without having to disconnect everytime I use the 3G on a PC? Also, it seems that if the router doesn't handle the DHCP duties, win7 by default makes the network public, which complicates sharing a lot...
