How To Build Simple Quality Wireless Network For Home

Sep 27, 2012

I will be building my own computer here in the next month and am looking to become quite informed about building my own wireless network.Trouble is, I'm a bit out of to with what I need and what is good. I'm also officially tired of renting a modem from Comcast (bastards keep bumping my monthly rate up). So what pieces of equipment do I need to build a simple quality wireless network for my home? I would like the network to support two laptops, one desktop, and an Xbox plugged into a LAN line. Also, I'm thinking of using a Rosewill Wirelss Adapter 3 antenna [URL].

Build 1 Home Network Using 2 Wifi Connections?

Sep 7, 2012

setting up a single home network in my apartment that will be able to connect to and use 2 separate wifi internet connections to provide stability and reliable bandwidth for a home network.

Situation: I have recently moved into an apartment complex that has 2 separate wifi connections that are available to the residents free of charge. (yes i am authorized to use both) I do have the option of paying for and having my own personal DSL line installed but I would much rather use the free wifi and not have the monthly bill.

The Problem: My apartment is located far enough away from each of the routers (One wifi at each end of the building and I am in the middle) that my signal strength is poor most of the time and sometimes heavy traffic on one wifi requires that I disconnect and connect to the other. Wifi A is farther and has very low signal and low or no connectivity. Wifi B has good signal most of the time but gets very slow during peek usage times of the day.

I understand that I need one or more high gain antennas in order to receive adequate signals from either Wifi connection.

Between me and my son we have 2 laptop PCs, 1 Desktop PC, 1 network printer, 1 Xbox, 1 HDTV and my smartphone. I don't want to try to equip each device with its own high gain antenna and try to figure out which device should be connected to which Wifi depending on available signal and bandwidth. Rite now I do not have a Home network set up at all and we are only using 1 laptop and the Xbox and each is directly connected via wifi (usually to Wifi B).

If I could connect to either Wifi A or B with decent bandwidth and reliability and then be able to network or connect all my devices via wireless or wired to my own router/extender etc. I would be happy. However.. Given that I must share bandwidth with the other residents and at times one Wifi has heavy use while the other does not. I have been trying to research how to connect to both wifi signals for load balancing, reliability and hopefully greater bandwidth.

Could A Switch Be Used Instead Of Router For A Simple Network

Jan 14, 2011

I know the general difference between a router and a switch, but after considerable reading I'm unable to determine if I could just use a switch for my pretty simple specific application.

Here are the two devices I need to setup on my network (connections would be wired, both devices in close proximity): (1) computer running windows2k with 100mbps ethernet card (has software firewall installed) (1) blue ray player for streaming netflix videos

Because I don't have any computers on the network communicating with each other, based on what I've read it seems possible to just connect a switch to my cable modem instead of using a router.

Cisco :: 861 - Setup Simple VPN On Small Network?

Feb 13, 2012

I would like to setup a simple VPN on a small network, nothing special, just to provide access to some simple resources on the network from anywhere. Since I'm not a Cisco expert, I was advised to user a 861 router, but I just can't seem to get the VPN working on this device.

I've placed the router behind a modem and did some basic configuration. Hosts who are connected to the modem (on the Vlan side) can access the internet and can setup a VPN connection to the router. A VPN connection from inside the network is worthless, but I just can't get the VPN working on the FastEthernet4 connection.

Any VPN config for a 861 router for this situation? Or how to configure this device as a VPN server?

D-Link DIR-615 :: Getting Low Wireless Signal Quality?

Jan 19, 2012

I took my router with me to visit family at Christmas.  It wouldn't allow the wired computer through the switch, but yet I could talk to the router with my laptop.  Rather than reconfigure, I bundled up my router & laptop and let well enough alone. Now that they're all back at my house, I can't reliably get the laptop to connect - Low Wireless Signal error.  I've reset the modem & router repeatedly.  Tried Channels 1,6, 11 and 8&9 too.  n only, as that's my laptop's.  On 2 occasions it has connected, rebooted and auto connected and run for 4-5 hours.  Then it's gone.  I've beat this mess for 3-8 hours per day, for days...!!!Laptop(Vista) connects to every other wifi I've tried.  It's sitting 4 ft from the router.

misc. info.
separate dsl modem, Centurytel, Netopia Cayman 3300 series
no other devices beyond wired desktop and laptop
no changes in other neighboring networks

Home Network :: Advanced Home Network Setup (3 Subnets) And Port Forwarding?

Feb 24, 2013

I have a Time Warner Cable business class service with no static IP, with a wireless modem which is plugged to a CAT5 distribution panel. On the jacks (2 other rooms on the house) I have a Linksys E3000 and a Linksys Valet router for signal boost and gadgets usage (TV, cameras, etc). The main router (TWC) has it's own external IP which TWC assigns to me and internally distributes via DHCP the range 192.168.0.x. With that said:

- The E3000 has a 192.168.0.6 IP -- this is fixed setup on the TWC router (ubee brand) by MAC address
- The Valet has a 192.168.0.7 IP -- this is fixed setup on the TWC router (ubee brand) by MAC address
- The main router has the 192.168.0.1 as the gateway and web-interface

Whenever I connect something to the E3000, it is distributing the 192.168.1.x range and the valet 192.168.2.x range. That works perfectly for my home based business until I decided to use more stuff on the network such as a IP printer, IP cameras, etc.

- The IP cameras are connected to the E3000 due to signal strength and I have manually assigned them the 192.168.1.15 and 192.168.1.16 IPs and ports 9001 and 9002.

- The printer is connected to the E3000 and I have manually assigned the IP 192.168.1.30.

Issue 1: Port forwarding On the main router (TWC - UBEE) I have tried to setup a port forwarding by informing the Local IP as 192.168.0.6 (E3000 IP), Internal Port 0, Public Interface IP (0.0.0.0), Ext Start Port 9001, Ext End Port 9001, Protocol - Both, Enabled Yes. On the E3000 I did the same config (screen shot attached e3000.png).This is not working properly. I can't get into the camera.

Issue 2: Printer/ The printer is only accessible if I connect to the E3000 (because it is on the 192.168.1.x network)

Issue 3: How to configure all the devices on the same subnet? If I want everyone to be on the 192.168.0.x network, how to configure properly the E3000 and the Valet? I have tried to force them into the same network but it would not work properly. It would not get an IP from the UBEE router (main).

Linksys Wireless Router :: EA4500 Speed Quality And Signal

May 27, 2012

Bought the new EA4500 a couple of days ago and have looked at my wireless connection and see it varies from 72Mbps to 144Mbps.  It has jumped up to 270Mbps a few times, but rarely.  Shouldn't it be 300Mbps most of the time?  My laptop is 4 feet away from the router and the router is on top of a card board box being elevated away from interference.  The prior router was a dlink 855 that went whacky after 3 years.  I believe I was usually at 270 Mbps with that.  What gives?  Do I have a faulty router?  With this new router, I expected the range to be a lot farther and faster too, but it is not in my family room.  2nd floor router, family room is 1st floor about 50 feet away and I get 1Mbps - 5Mbps.    Everything is set to Auto on router and IP6 is disabled on laptop.

USR 8054 Wireless Router - Build A LAN Internet Connection For An Office

Aug 9, 2012

I'm not being able to wireless distribute the office LAN int-con via recently purchased Tp-link tl-wr740n wireless n router'. Actually, I had no problems with my USR 8054 wireless router before I decided to replace the router with an 'N' one as I experienced some connection loss on my mac book pro(mac osx 10.8) thru USR 8054. The internet connection I have is from a wall socket in my office. I know the hub/router/switch or whatever behind has no DCHP activated because the device connected to that socket cannot get an IP, you must enter it manually together with gateway, DNS etc.. and the values are as
ip 10.50.31.108
subnet 255.0.0.0
gateway 10.50.31.254
Whenever I enter these on my USR's 'static IP configuration' via quick setup and plug the Ethernet cable from the wall socket to the WAN, it works and the router immediately starts to let me surf on the net wireless. However, the same procedure has never succeeded on my Tp-link with its latest original firmware or dd-wrt. It even says no cable connected although it is connect from the wall socket to its WAN.I also tried to connect my computer directly to the wall socket with a regular Ethernet cable and entered the ip, gateway etc manually. It didn't work at first, then I changed IPv6 setting from ''auto'' to ''local connection only'' and I was able connect to the internet with no trouble.

Linksys Wireless Router :: Low Transmission Rate In E1200 Firmware V2.0.04 (Build 1)?

Nov 1, 2012

the only way i can get 300mbps from this router is by having these settings, it seems the only valid settings to get  300mbps from the router are the following:

Network Mode: mixed
Channel Width: auto (20mhz or 40mhz)
Channel : 1

if i leave the channel to auto it won't show up as 300.on top of that it doesn't want to stay at 300mbps for very long, sometimes its max rate in inSSDer is only 144 or 156mbps. its the weirdest thing, i think this version of the firmware seems to forget to check for how fast its wireless transmit speed is.When it reboots it only transmits at 144 or 156mbps. i have to go in the basic wireless page and just save the settings to reset it to 300, i don't even have to change anything, it resets its max rated speed back up to 300mbps.and more importantly, are the devs aware of this problem for the e1200 v2 ?

It works fine when I'm at home; other PCs can connect and play the videos no problem. The problem is when I'm at work. When I'm at work, I go to my web page (via my IP address in a web browser) and the Media Player plugin says "Connecting" for a minute, then it says Ready, but the video will not play. I tried using a smaller, AVI file (680 MB) instead to see if the problem was streaming such a large file, but the video still would not play.Do I need to foward more ports on my router so that Windows Media Player can connect back and get the information it needs?

Cisco Wireless :: WAP4410N As Simple Wi-Fi Bridge?

I have a room cut off from the wired network by concrete walls (there are windows and it's a very short distance).  There is a device in that room with a wired network adapter than needs access to the network.  We'd like to use a pair of WAP4410N devices to get that room on our wired network over a simple "wireless bridge."

Would the following work?

Connect one WAP4410N normally with WPA2 Personal encryption and connect it to our wired network.  Enable repeating of its signal.Set up the "remote" WAP4410N in the "cut off" room.  Give it the same SSID and Encryption settings.  Enable "Wireless Client Repeater" mode and uncheck the box labeled "Allow wireless station to associate". . . then use its RJ45 network port to connect to the wired device in the room.  My biggest concern is the part in bold.  Will the network port on the "remote" repeater function like that?  So that any devices (or a switch) plugged into it will then be "forwarded along the bridge" to the main/local AP and then onto our network?
