How To Setup A Wireless Router On A Netbook Without CD
May 26, 2012
I just bought a Linksys Wireless Router without realizing that I need to install the CD to get started.....of course my Dell netbook doesn't have a disc drive. How do I use the router?
I could bring my laptop home from work and use that but then would I always have to bring my laptop home each night in order to use wireless?

So I purchased a Linksys E4200 a couple weeks ago from Best Buy (got the $149 price) and finally got around to setting it up last Thursday. Before I get to my problem, I am happy to say that I have not experienced the "blinking light" syndrome that seems to plauge a number of other owners. In fact, the E4200 is everything I hoped it would be ... except for one problem. I cannot get my sister's Acer Aspire One netbook to connect to it.
It's really strange actually; the netbook picks up the 2.4GHz SSID fine (it's set to mixed mode) and upon selecting it and I input the WPA2-Personal password no problem. Then, it takes forever to finally aquire a network address, like at least 3 full minutes (usually this process takes a few seconds). After that, it tells me it is connected to the network with excellent signal strength. Except, despite it saying it's connected, the Internet does not work at all. If I got into the details of the wireless adapter, it tells me that the router/network failed to give the adapter a network address.

Router is configured for manual setup, Wireless-G only, IP addresses start from 2, (range from 2 to 201).
I have a Gigabyte M912 netbook that used to connect to Internet over wireless through my old D-Link and had no problems with that.
With WL160NL it connects to the wireless all right, but it does not go anywhere from there. It gets an IP address, connects successfully, but no internet sites can be accessed. Pinging gateway (192.168.1.1) gives 4 request timeouts. Other devices (Acer A500 tablet, sever smartphones, even a blasted Wowwee Rovio) have no similar problems< connecting and seeing each other and connecting to the Internet.
1. I have no idea why that happens.
2. Restarting the netbook, switching the wifi module on and off, removing remembered network settings and inputting them anew etc. does nothing.
3. Manually configuring the netbook to use a predefined static IP address instead of DHCP did not work.
The netbook uses an Atheros AR5007EG module.

I recenlty bought an E2500 router. I was able to connect 4 of our laptops at home just fine. But when I tried to connect my Acer One netbook, the "Cisco Connect" loaded up to 25% & then I couldn't connect to the internet. I've contacted Tech Support & they suggested downloading the latest wireless adapter driver. I contacted Acer & they said it sounded like a security issue on my netbook. I was out of warranty so they'd have to charge $150 for tech support.

I have Asus EEPC Seashell/ 1015PEM netbook. The wi-fi connects only near/ so close to the wireless router with full signal. Just next room, blocked by a wall it disconnects, but full signal still exists. Is it anything to do with driver or hardware incompatibility- netbook has 802.11n adapter. Wireless router/DI624+ is 802.11g.

I have a Compaq mini CQ10-100 Netbook, and I am trying to Make a Wireless internet connection through a D-link router. My ISP is Cox Cable. The Netbook is connected to my wireless network, but will not connect to the internet. It keeps asking me to transfer information, via thumb drive, from a wireless access point, but my router is my wireless connector and it doesn't have a USB port to plug in a thumb drive. How do I get this netbook hooked up to the internet?

I've got a netbook (Acer Aspire One) with XP SP3 on it. It connects to my wireless network (so it says), but it won't get onto the internet. I can ping 127.0.0.1, but it won't ping my router. When I do ipconfig /release > ipconfig /flushdns > ipconfig /renew, it hangs up on the renew portion telling me that the DHCP server timed out. The exact error message is:"An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection 2 : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected"I've checked the TCP/IP settings, it's set to automatically obtain and IP address and DNS servers. I've checked the DHCP service and that's running. The internet works when it's wired. I've used the "repair" function when right-clicking the wireless icon and it tells me it can't renew my IP address. I made an ipconfig /all when it was connected and this is what it came up with:
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : Jencomputer
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

I bought 2 Sylvania netbooks for my kids. I was able to go wireless on my son's netbook since I found a small icon on the task manager, where I clicked and just followed the instructions. However, I can't find that icon on my daughters netbook, I've tried the control panel for internet connections but the "wireless" option is not there...

My family and I are traveling abroad for a three week vacation (yay!). The hotel we are staying in (and as is probably the case with future hotels) does not have a WiFi connection. However, there is one ethernet port/cable that we have connected an Acer Aspire One netbook to, and it is currently connected with pretty good speeds. What I'm wondering is, is there any way to set up a secured wireless network through the netbook and the hard port connection? It seems that Windows XP Network Set Up Wizard is really not a whole bunch of guidance on this particular subject.

I'm working on a Gateway LT2016U and it will not connect to the Internet (wired or wireless) to its home modem. I can access the same modem with my Netbook (wired and wireless) so I know the modem is working. I can access the Internet with the Gateway anywhere else ( my home and my work) but it will not connect to the owners modem. I've ran the network trouble shooting software and it doesn't fix anything.

The netbook was working fine on wireless network; didnt use it for a couple of days - now I cannot conenct wired or wireless; cannot see the wired or wireless modem , only MSN dial up. But the wireless modem light is blinking steadily. Otherwise the netbook is working OK - it even seems to boot up quicker than it used to)(I would reinstall the OS but it didnt come with OS DVD or a DVD drive ; so I didnt create a backup when I bought it. I have since purchased a USB DVD drive; this is one of two identical netbooks I purchased on black Friday - other one works perfectly?

I tried my entire afternoon trying to figure this out but to no avail. Fortunately, I found this place out of my desperation for a solution. My netbook works very well in my home network but when I brought it to my workplace, I was unable to connect to the internet eventhough I could connect to the wireless network. Other computers and laptops were able to connect and use the internet well using the same router. I tried manually configuring my IP and default gateway based on what I read but nothing worked.

I have: ASUS Netbook with Windows 7 Starter.
As of last night, I cannot connect to any of the wireless networks I use every day (my personal home network or my school's WPA2).
The signal strength is very good, but it says "Limited Access" next to the network name. Apparently "Limited" means "No" because I am not connected. Here's what happened:Lavasoft Ad-Aware was blocking a site that I needed to access. I haven't used Ad-Aware in months, and it did not even appear to be running. So uninstalled it with Add/Remove programs in the control panel. BUT, mid-way through the uninstallation, I got a blue screen and my computer restarted. When my computer booted back up, I could no longer connect to my home's wireless. I'm at school now and I cannot connect here either. Ad-aware is gone from the add/remove programs list, but there is still an Ad-Aware folder in Program Files. The folder still has a bunch of stuff in it, including adaware.exe. I dont see an uninstaller (but i havent really investigated that yet). so now i can't connect to any network. Here's What I've TriedRan troubleshooter. Useless. Turned off my netbook's wireless. turned it back on. Device manager says my Network Adapters are working fine. No yellow or red icons next to them. also tried resetting stuff with the command prompt. something about winsock and netsh. I don't know what I was doing though. just following instructions from other people on yahoo answers when i googled the problem.

This issue concerns our Acer Aspire1 Netbook. It just suddenly will not let us access our home wireless network. When I followed previous advice by unchecking the IEEE 802.1x box, I received the "40 bit or 104 bit" warning box and upon checking found that the 802.1x box had automatically been rechecked. Needless to say, we still can't access the wireless network.

I have 2 Samsung NC10's here at home that I would like to be able to print using my new Epson PX720WD wireless printer. The printer is fine when sending doc's or images from my main PC, but I suspect I need to load the same software via the CD onto these laptops? Problem with that is they don't have CD drives. Am I thinking along the right lines here? If so, is it possible to drag the info onto a memory stick, insert into laptop and off I go?
