Internet Works Through Ethernet Until Plugged Into Router?
Feb 28, 2012
I have my internet coming from my DSL modem (of course) and running into my wireless router. Once it is in the router I can't get a connection, period. Not even through any of my router's ethernet ports. This wasn't the case until about 3 o'clock yesterday. If I unplug the cable from my wireless router and plug it directly into my computer it runs fine. If I run it through my Micro-Cell tower and into my computer it runs fine. But if I plug it into a router it won't work through Wi-Fi or Ethernet. I have tested the connections of all the ethernet cables I am using. Figuring it had to be a problem with my router (since it was working earlier and the connection only disappears when plugged into it) so I bought another, same problem. What else could it be? PS: I'm using both a MacBook Bro, a PC, a PS3, and a Nintendo 3DS and none get a signal from the wifi. I always keep the PC hardwired through the ethernet ports on the router and use the wireless for everything else

I've been using the Linksys router e1000 N type for a week now and it hasn't beeen such a great experience. The thing is when i connect the modem to my laptop via ethernet cable internet works but not when i connect the cable to the router even though this worked before. actually a few hours before. so i dont know whats happened to my router since clearly the problem is in there. the modem has lights for PC Cable DATA and POWER. The lights to all of them blink when i have connected the modem directly to laptop but the PC light is non existent when i connect it to router. hence i get no internet access. the routers power is on so i dont know what the prob is ive rebooted it a few times but to no avail.

I'm visiting my friend at her apartment and her internet only works through an ethernet cable. I unplugged the cable from her computer and plugged it into mine and it worked perfectly but when we switched it back to her computer her internet takes forever to identify and ends with local only connection how do we fix her computer?

I've had this modem set up for over 6 months and this just happened out of the blue. I had no connection to the internet, and the lights on LAN 1 and 3 were lit (only LAN 1 is in use.) I think I went about this the wrong way because now the LAN lights won't light up at all, and the internet light is always yellow. I know it's not the ISP because well I'm writing this post with my modem plugged directly into the PC.
When I try to reinstall the router using the CD I get an error message stating that the Ethernet cable probably isn't plugged in, although it is, as I followed each step exactly.
Now when I try to plug in the PC to the router I can't access the router webpage, and device manager is showing an Ethernet controller with a yellow exclamation mark under other devices. I don't even know where to start.
HW: C1
FW: I resetted the modem in an attempt to get this working again, so I imagine it's at the default now. Besides I can't access the router page anyways.
Region: NA - Canada
Wired Connection
Factory reset: Yes
ISP: Shaw (Cable)
Modem: Motorolas SB5102 - no built in router

I've got a wireless adapter for my desktop and thats what i've been using for years to connect, but now i'm am trying to get a more reliable connection by having the ethernet cable plugged in. Problem is, as soon as I plug it in the whole computer gets extreamly sluggish or sometimes freezes up completely. If I am very patient, I can very slowly do something things. If I open the browser, it probably takes a minute for it to load. Opening the control panel, the window pops-up but none of the icons will appear until it times out. And trying to use the network icons on the taskbar to get into network settings is impossible. Weird thing is as soon as I unplug it and turn the wifi back on, the PC starts responding super quick again within seconds.

Our home school's having trouble attaching a wireless router to my XP PC's ethernet port. Our donated vintage Macs and XP machines are tied to the internet via a cable box's wireless router. Works just fine. Now I wish to boost the signal to a building beyond the local area by attaching a wireless router to a Dell 260 running XP. This router's IP is 192.168.11.1 (ON) and 192.168.11.100 (OFF), and I've spent hours with the Connection Wizard thing on XP trying to create a ethernet path to the router but I can't find a configuration that states an ethernet path or channel. The modem lights normally and other machines can pick up and connect with its signal but there's no real transmission, the receiver machines getting:Firefox can't find the server at [URL].Check the address for typing errors such as [URL]instead of [URL] If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.Ironically, the router works just great on the Macs, which has both Airport on to receive signals from a cable TV wireless router and also has its shared Ethernet connection on, and the ethernet side requires no IP configuration like it seems you must on the XP's internet connection page. The router in question just plugs in the Mac and transmits just fine. I would use the Mac for this purpose but I really wish to use the Dell. The Dell's current network configuration after many trials:
Wireless Connection 3
LAN / High Speed Internet
Connected, Firewalled
802.11n USB Wireless LAN Card
IP 169.18.2.7
[code]....
Oddly, the Mac's Network panel states: "The cable for built-in ethernet is connected, but your computer does not have an IP address and cannot connect the internet." Yet it does!

I have a problem concerning my Netgear XET1001 85 MBit/s Wall-Plugged Ethernet Adapter. My personal computer in my room is connected directly to our router and I'm getting arround 14-15Mbps download speeds. My parents computer is located in a different room and I bought them the Netgear Adapter thinking this was the most effective and simplest solution. Better than a Wifi-Adapter. I cost me quite a lot too to be honest. The problem is my parents are getting speeds of 0.05Mbps and the browser often doesn't even load the pages completely. To me it seems like the data can only travel through the thing very hardly if at all.
We thought this might have to do with the age and RAM of our computer. (512MB of RAM) So we bought a new one a couple of days ago. Turns out: nothing has changed.
The Wall-Pluggs are connected directly to the outlet by the way. I'm trying to give you the most amount of information I can think of so one more thing might be important. Yesterday I brought my parent's PC into my room, connected it to the Wall-Plugg and got speeds of 5Mbps. Although this is better, it's not what I bought this thing for. Even a WIFI connection would be faster would'nt it?

My internet service grinds to all but a halt as soon as I plug in the ethernet cable to my desktop. Nothing is running in the background (that I can determine). Nothing is spamming data up or down (that I can determine). I get 40ms ping and 12Mbps downloads on every device I have until I plug in my big boy; then all the speeds come crashing down to 600ms ping and 0.9-1.4Mbps downloads (including the desktop, I have not been able to play SWTOR for weeks now). It's not the provider, (I thought it was) but I switched from Time Warner to AT&T with the exact same results. ASUS P8P67 Pro; I've had funky issues with USB ports and one SATA port died. Other friends suggest I may have an awful bug and I need to wipe and start over. I wouldn't mind doing that, but I don't have a windows recovery disk (my copy is legitimate).
Mobo-as listed.
CPU- i5-2500k stock, not clocked
RAM- 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3 1600

So I have a Westell 7500 Modem/Router with Century Link DSL. I've been running a couple of laptops and my wifi enabled TV on the wireless. A few days ago I got a new desktop PC (Windows 7) and plugged the ethernet cable into it. Everything was great but the wireless was a bit slow for the TV so I plugged that in with an ethernet cable too. No problems for a few days. Today, we had a power blip and everything reset and I noticed that the internet light on the modem was solid red and I couldn't access the internet on any machine (ethernet or wifi). I called the ISP who said there was an outage in the area. A few hours later, solid green light on the modem BUT the TV (ethernet connected), my iphone, and my laptops could NOT connect, despite the network showing up with a full signal. Oddly, my new PC, connected via ethernet was fine so I played some Diablo (side note). Here's the deal: the new PC connects just fine but nothing else will. If I unplug the ethernet cable to the PC or disable the LAN connection, the red internet light appears on the modem. It seems as though the PC has hijacked the modem in some way. Even the TV won't connect with the ethernet cable. The only way the internet works now is if the modem is connected to the new PC. I've done all the resents - unplugged the modem and let it sit for 10-15 minutes, accessed the router settings, etc etc. Why would this start happening now after everything was working well for several days and how do I fix it? I need the wifi connection! Update: Plugged my Macbook Pro into the ethernet cable (took it out of new PC) and it works.

This has been driving me absolutely crazy but I am glad to have found the source of it. Over the past 4-5 weeks ever since i built my new computer, my computer has always had this wierd high pitch noise. I dont know if its coil whine or not, but the sound signature is def not the same as the coil whine that comes from my 7970 card. It sounds more digital.
What could be the cause of this? And what would the remedy be? My ethernet cable is approx 60 ft so it will be a pain in the ass to replace. Or buy another NIC?
edit: forgot to mention....the noise is constant. Not intermittent with usage. No amount of load or idle on the network changes the noise.

Earlier my desktop was to b in d same place where the router was der. Everything worked fine. Now I decided to shift my desktop to another room. I have kept the router at the earlier place only. I have brought a 25m long new cat 5 cable. When I connected it to my desktop, the orange led on ethernet port do not light up and the desktop is unable to detect the ethernet cable and hence the internet connection. On the router, a light of ethernet keeps on blinking every 1 second. I was worried whether my ethernet port got fried. So i inserted another ethernet cable, but then the ethernet orange light came and the pc detedted the connection. Therefore I thought the cable might be faulty. Therefore I connected my laptop with that 25m cable. But my laptop detected it and showed the internet connection. But now when i again connect the cable to my desktop, there's no light and the pc does not detect it. However, if i connect the 25m cable to my desktop then during boot the ethernet light on router is stable just as when it is normally connected to the internet. But when i go into windows it starts blinking every 1 second.
My router is MTNL Model No. UT-304R2
Desktop - Asus P7H55, core i5
Laptop- HP 2000
Windows 7 Ultimate on both desktop and laptop.

I had to move to a remote area in which I can only use a 3G mobile internet connection. The 3G connection is working fine, that is until I plug in my Asus RT-N12 router in order to create a wireless home network between our computers (for file and printer sharing).
For me it seems like firefox is trying to connect to internet trough the router. But that is not possible, since the router has no internet. The only internet is from the 3G mobile internet stick.
How can I tell firefox, that it should look for internet in the 3G connection instead of the router?

I can't seem to connect to the internet via the Ethernet port on my laptop, but the built-in Wi-Fi card works perfectly fine. I normally use Wi-Fi, as our signal is very strong, even if I go outside and up the road, I can still connect.
My issue is that although I don't need it, I'd like to setup Ethernet for the first time since installing Windows 7. I've had Windows 7 since April 2011, and prior to that I used Windows Vista. From memory, I don't think Vista had any problems with connecting via Ethernet back before I moved house, but this was over two years ago.
My laptop is an ASUS X58L, and the NIC identified by Device Manager, is a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC. Going into the properties, I can see that I have the latest Windows 7 driver installed - 6.111.723.2009, however prior to this I had the driver that came with the machine (when it was running Vista), which was 6.108.331.2008 and tried updating from Device Manager, but for some reason it said that I had the best driver already installed. To install the 2009 Windows 7 driver, I had to manually download it from Realtek. With either of the drivers, connecting via Ethernet doesn't work, and I'm confused as to what to do next.

I have a Netcomm NB9WMAXXn router and 3 laptops i want to connect to it wirelesslyThe problem is that the iwreless internet connection slows down and eventually drops out after about 30m unless one of the laptops remains connected via Ethernet to the router. The wireless laptops will remain connected to the router but the internet connection will fail. The laptop with Ethernet connection retains a very good connection so i'm thinking this is an issue with my router or it's configuration

While im playing games like battefield 3 left 4 dead 2 or minecraft i get rubberbanding lag which is basically my game character running foward then being shot back to his original postion. I originally was using a wireless usb adapter so i blamed it for the cause of the lag. (My pings were fine btw) I went to ethernet for a week and the lag went away so everything is fine via ethernet. I just bought a new wireless card but there is still this terrible lag!

I recently finished my basement and put together a home entertainment system. I ran ethernet through the walls to a wall jack. I plugged my laptop into it and it tested good (internet worked and pinged my router 1ms time & 64 TTL.) I put an A/V rack in front of it and brought down my Netgear GS605 switch, XBox360, BD player that had all been on the network upstairs and added a new LAN capable receiver. None of those components will recognize the network. Light doesn't light on the switch(neither amber nor green,) Xbox doesn't recognize a cable is even plugged in. I unplug the switch and using the same cables my laptop picks it up just fine. I bypassed the switch and went strait to the other A/V gear and none of them recognize the network.By the way, the switch is auto detect between patch/crosssover. The IP settings are all the same from when the gear was connected upstairs.

I've been having an issue with my internet connection. I have AT&T Uverse high speed internet, complete with the Motorola NVG510 ADSL modem. For the past couple weeks, my download speeds have gone from 1.0 MB/s to < 100 KB/s up to 400 KB/s if I'm lucky.I used to be able to download files and watch videos at the same time with very little trouble, but now I only have enough bandwidth to either do one or the other without causing any problems. I thought my ISP had throttled my bandwidth, but I've run the Glasnost tests at url... and it came back as fine.It may not mean anything, but I should note that a few weeks ago, we had storms move through the area and lightning struck our house. It ended up shocking my mom through the USB mouse while she was using my computer, it blew out one of my computer speakers, and I believe it's the reason why the ethernet port on my motherboard no longer works.
