I have a beautiful old home but, the walls are thick and WiFi signal dies easily. Is a Homeplug system safe for my old home? I am hoping to convert our current upstairs router into an access point/repeater for the downstairs router via DD-WRT. The issue is that the upstairs WiFi is on the 3rd floor and the downstairs in on the 1st and I will not be stringing an Ethernet cable through the walls.
View 1 RepliesToday I set up a home network:Cable router plugged in to......Homeplug network, (D-Link DHP-307AV/B 200 MBPS PowerLine Homeplugs) plugged in to a LAN port of......a spare adsl router configured as per here: Connecting Additional Routers | Tech Support Forum...with two desktop machines plugged into the LAN ports of the ADSL router.Both of the desktops have got similar specs, are equi-distant from the ADSL router, and are both connected using Ethernet, not wireless.One of them gets a 9MB/sec ADSL [URL]download, the other can't even bring the webpage up and times out if you ask Google to do a search.Taking out the adsl router and plugging the desktop straight into the homeplug gets a network speed of ~13MB/sec on [URL].Plugging a computer directly into the cable modem gives network speeds of ~40MB/sec on [URL] How can I improve on this, and have it so that both machines can access the Interwebnet at a decent bandwidth?

Orignially it worked when I used internet explore 64-bit but eventually that stopped working as well. I have 3 accounts on this computer and I need safemode with networking for all of them. I do have both mcfee and norton anti virus i was told that may be the problem however, I do not know how to install either of them.

When I start the computer on normal mode, the internet is very slowly and sometimes disconnect, and few times just work fine ( doesn't last more than 2 minutes). however, when i put it in safe mode with networking, it works perfectly. I have plugged in the two homeplugs and connected them to my pc and broadband with a ethernet cable. When i turn on my pc the ethernet light turns on (same for downstairs) but after installing the software and trying to search for my wifi a message pops up saying "The homeplug adapter has NOT BEEN DETECTED. Please check your computer cables". So i did so, i chnaged the sockect moved the ethernet cable to a diffrent slot and still it says it has not been detected. The two buildings are about 250 feet away from each other. Both are fed from the same utility pole that is half way between them. That means both are on the same transformer, but each has its own metered electrical service.Right now I am using 10 Mb. Home Phone Line network adapters. They work OK but data speeds are limited to about 5 Mb. of throughput and the adapters are no longer available. I also have WiFi at both locations but neither one will talk far enough to cover the other building.I also use X10 remote controls in my house. I have tested them from the house to the garage and they do not work at all over that distance
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have the following network setup. I have a dynamic IP address from my ISP. I connect my fiber to a D-Link DIR-645 and set up my wireless network. The coverage is kind of poor in my son's room so I use a D-Link Powerline Homeplug 501AV to extend internet to my son's room. I connect one Homeplug to the DIR-645 and set the other Homeplug in the power outlet in my son's room. It works if I connect his PC or Xbox via an ethernet cable to the Homeplug in his room. Since he has both PC and XBox I have connected a D-LINK DIR-100 to the Homeplug and have two ethernet cables connecting to his PC and Xbox. Here is the problem. I don't get an internet connection to the DIR-100.How shall I configure the two routers to work?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed a very basic version of XP on my old laptop (Gateway MT3707).After hours of searching for the correct drivers, I found them, and installed them. After installing the correct drivers for wireless internet I was able to pull up the list and find my network on it.When double clicking on our wireless network it asks for a network key (also called WEP key or WPA key).Now we have a password for our network, but after an exhausting amount of tries that won't work. I not sure if that is what its looking for. In our apartment we run mac OSX, windows vista, etc., but usually the password for the network is satisfactory. I have never ran into this problem.I hate to be a noob, but I don't know where to go from here.

My computer came with Mcaffe pre installed on the laptop however did not stop me getting the police e crime unit virus about three weeks ago. To fix this I booted in safe mode and did a system restore to around 3 months before I got the virus. I then installed avast antivirus and did a scan and boot scan which came back with nothing which suggested to me it had gone. This then meant I had both mcaffe and and avast running at the same time. Then until 3 weeks later the internet suddenly stopped working whilst I was on the internet. My laptop sees my router and says it is connected to it but says the router is not connected to the internet. This is false as every other device in the house can connect. However I then tried my computer in safe mode with networking and it can connect to the internet.

Scans: Scanned for virus using Microsoft Securty Essential, Malwarebytes and Spybot. There were viruses but they are cleaned now.
Router: I show I am connected to the router. I have unplugged and reset the router.
NIC: I have reset the NIC, shows NIC is working properly
Drivers: Most recent drivers
Firewall/Security: have shut down and tested the internet
CMD: can ping google and others
CMD: reset TCP/IP stack
and many others.
For some reason when I switched on this evening wireless won't work and the screen appears to be in safe mode. I can connect using the cable but wireless seems to gone.

As a side note I was able to connect in normal mode with Firefox V4 but accidentally updated to FF12 and now it won't work either. HJT log posted below. I've tried reseting and reinsatalling IE9, flushed the DNS, reset TCPIP. Still nothing.

My daughters laptop will not connect either wirelessly or via cable apart from in Safe mode with Networking. It has been working fine for over a year and she has not made any radical changes recently and all other devices in our house work and connect fine. I have run various checks including Malwarebytes and their root checker all comes back clean.
